ENCOURAGING WILDLIFE IN THE GARDEN THROUGH THOUGHTFUL PLANTING

Gardens can play a vital role in supporting wildlife, particularly in suburban and urban areas where natural habitats are increasingly fragmented. By choosing the right plants and adopting a more relaxed approach to garden maintenance, it is possible to create a space that benefits birds, insects, and small mammals throughout the year.

harmful to wildlife. Leaving areas of the garden a little messy can make a huge difference. Fallen leaves and decaying plant matter help insulate the soil, protecting roots from frost during winter. As they break down, they also add natural nutrients, improving soil health and creating leaf mould that benefits plants in the long term.

One of the most effective ways to encourage wildlife is through planting shrubs and trees that provide food and shelter. Shrubs such as Cotoneaster, Pyracantha and Ilex (holly) are excellent choices, as they produce berries that many birds rely on, especially during the colder months. Similarly, small berrying trees like Crataegus (hawthorn) and Sorbus (rowan) are invaluable. These trees not only provide fruit but also offer nesting sites and protection from predators. Importantly, many of these plants hold onto their berries through winter and into early spring, when food is scarce and birds are most vulnerable.

In my own garden here in suburban Stockport, I have seen first-hand how planting with wildlife in mind can transform a garden. Each spring, a wide variety of birds visit, including sparrows, thrushes and blackbirds. Smaller birds are particularly attracted to the blossom of hawthorn and rowan. In May, it is a joy to watch blue tits and robins flitting through the branches, pecking at the flowers and feeding on the insects they attract. These moments are a reminder that gardens are not just decorative spaces, but living ecosystems.

Beyond planting, how we manage our gardens is just as important. Modern gardening often encourages tidiness, cutting back plants early, clearing fallen leaves, and removing dead growth. While this may look neat, it can be

A few years ago, I noticed something unusual in my garden during autumn. Leaves seemed to be moving and gathering in a corner beneath a woody tree. At first, I assumed the wind was responsible. It wasn’t until spring that I discovered the true cause: a hedgehog had collected the leaves and dry litter to build a winter nest. Since then, by continuing to leave parts of the garden undisturbed, we have been rewarded with a growing hedgehog population. Three years on, we now have a family of three hedgehogs, with successive years of hoglets, a wonderful sign that the garden is providing what they need.

Encouraging wildlife does not require large spaces or expensive changes. Even small gardens can make a difference with thoughtful planting and a willingness to let nature take the lead. By choosing berry-bearing shrubs and trees, allowing plants to flower, and resisting the urge to over-tidy, gardeners can create havens for wildlife while enjoying a richer, more vibrant garden themselves.

Sometimes, the simplest acts, planting a tree or leaving a pile of leaves, can have the greatest impact.

Happy Gardening!

Chinese Year of the Horse

On the eve of the Chinese Year of the Horse beware if your wife turns 60 in 2026, writes Charles Hanson.

February 17 marks the start of the Chinese New Year which, in 2026, celebrates the Year of the Horse. Every Chinese zodiac comes with its own mood and personality.

After the slower snake year of 2025, the horse is considered one of the most dynamic and spirited signs in the zodiac.

But 2026 is not just the Year of the Horse.

It is more specifically the dreaded Year of the Fire-Horse, which only occurs once every 60 years.

Superstition has it that girls born in this year, last seen in 1966, are so fiery that they either kill their future husbands or significantly shorten their lives.

So watch out anyone whose wife turns 60 this year!

In Chinese mythology, horses in general were associated with dragons, thought to be capable of flight and able to carry humans to the land of the immortals.

Since then, they have been passed down the generations, with many current owners having no idea just how much they are worth.

Like this rare libation cup found in a garage. Or this blue and white Chinese pot, which was used as a doorstop and known to the family simply as “Aunt Beryl’s vase”, which sold for £800,000.

The reason the

Think of the equine funerary figures of the Tang Dynasty.

In recent years we have seen some wonderful results for all types of Oriental objects in our salerooms.

A cracked vase kept in a loft, expected to make just £100, sold for £130,000 in our Derby saleroom after it was discovered to be a rare Ming treasure.

It had been inherited by two sisters from their great grandfather who worked in China in the early 20th century.

This is the route – via European tradespeople or diplomats – that many treasures of the East came to our shores.

The vase’s six-character mark dated it to the Xuande period (1426–1435), image courtesy of Hansons Auctioneers

A 15th-century vase, expected to make £100-£200, sold for £130,000 at Hansons Auctioneers’ recent sale saleroom, image courtesy of Hansons Auctioneers

prices are soaring is because China’s growing wealth has created high net worth individuals who are keen to repatriate objects to their homeland and reclaim their country’s past.

So the Year of the Fire-Horse might just be your year. Why not come along to our next valuation at St John’s Church Centre, Church Hill, Knutsford, WA16 6DH, on January 30 from 11am-1pm to discover if you are galloping into 2026.

STOCKPORT CARE HOMES TEAM UP WITH THE COMMUNITY FOR DIY PROJECTS Community

Two Stockport care homes have joined forces with local school children and the community as part of a nationwide initiative to prevent DIY skills from being forgotten.

Residents at Care UK’s Abney Court in Abney Hall Park in Cheadle and Ladybrook Manor in Bramhall, have been rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck into some hands-on DIY – all in the name of sharing skills with the next generation.

As part of Care UK’s ‘Fixer Uppers’ programme, at Abney Court, residents teamed up with pupils from Ladybarn House to upcycle unwanted household items, including wellies, Crocs and even Lego containers. Together, they turned them into plant pots filled with spring bulbs and winter flowers.

82-year-old Abney Court resident, Norma Jones, said: ‘’I really enjoyed spending time with the children upcycling items. Our generation is used to re-using and repairing things before we buy new, so it was a pleasure sharing our knowledge and skills with the children.’’

At Ladybrook Manor, the team held a repair shop-style event run by Marc Ward, the home’s Maintenance Coordinator and Diane Smith, the Head Housekeeper.

During the event, residents and the community were given the opportunity to bring items that needed fixing, giving their belongings a new lease of life. They were joined by the Physio Fit team, who also repaired and replaced the residents’ frames and sticks.

George Hill, resident at Ladybrook Manor, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the sense of purpose —

everyone working together, sharing skills. It makes far more sense to repair things than to throw them out. In my day, we valued what we had, and I believe it’s important that we continue to do so.”

Zoe Smart, Home Manager at Abney Court, said:

“Residents here at Abney Court have a wealth of skills and life experiences, and the ‘Fixer Uppers’ project has been a wonderful opportunity for them to share practical knowledge in a meaningful way.”

“A big thank you to Ladybarn House for joining us to build the plant pots – it’s been a real pleasure working together!”

Susan Cameron, General Manager at Ladybrook Manor, added: “Our maintenance and housekeeping teams consistently go above and beyond to maintain the care home and support meaningful activities for residents. Their involvement in the Fixer Uppers project has made a real difference, and it’s been wonderful to watch residents build on their talents under their guidance.

Launched to celebrate International Repair Day, the initiative aims to revive traditional repair skills – such as fixing furniture, mending clothes and tackling small maintenance jobs – and champion the invaluable knowledge older generations can pass on while promoting sustainability. CONSIDER PILATES IN YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

At the start of a New Year you may have included the resolution to get fit, whilst enthusiasm is high, making resolutions that last beyond that initial spark of motivation can be challenging.

If you’re tired of the cycle of cheerfully setting and quickly abandoning your resolutions, what you need is a fun way of exercising that will ultimately help you achieve your goals.

Let’s explore how embracing some of the principles we follow in Pilates can unlock your full potential this year and help ensure you have resolutions worth keeping.

Concentration

control and flow of the movements that are supposed to be taking place throughout the exercise.

Co-ordination

Functional movement patterns are taught to encourage precision and control. As exercise levels progress the complexity of the movement sequence increases. Coordination is excellent mental and physical training.

Flowing movements

Flowing movement provides part of the uniqueness to the Pilates Method. A focus on controlled, graceful and yet dynamic movement should be at the core of each movement. If all the other principles are considered and interrelated then flowing movement should occur as a result.

Pilates requires constant awareness of the movement process. You must be mindful of your body and its movements, otherwise you cease to learn, you just ‘do’.

Relaxation

Focusing on releasing areas of tension within the body before and during each exercise is important as it allows constructive change to occur. Relaxation of overactive muscles through conscious and controlled mobilisation forms a key part of Pilates exercise, thus enabling less active muscles to be recruited and developed.

Alignment

Alignment is the key to stability and correct posture. Maintaining good posture and body awareness encourages the desired muscles to work efficiently.

Breathing

Learning how to breathe properly strengthens the diaphragm which contributes to the relaxation of the psoas (hip flexor muscles) whilst simultaneously activating the core and pelvic floor muscles.

Centering (core stability)

Centering is a dynamic process which relates directly to both the challenge of limiting any unwanted movements as well as maintaining the

Stamina

Pilates builds endurance by ensuring the body is used efficiently. Muscles begin to work more functionally as energy will no longer be wasted and stamina will develop.

Surrounding yourself with a supportive community can be the key to keeping your sights on your goals. Create specific, measurable and realistic goals, like attending two classes a week or mastering a new move will help you stay motivated and prevent burnout.

So don’t delay join a group Pilates class today to help support your New Year goals and a more fulfilling year ahead.

HEARING DOGS FOR DEAF PEOPLE APEAL

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is appealing for dog lovers across Cheshire to become volunteer puppy trainers.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People trains dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds such as smoke alarms, doorbells, and even baby monitors.

When fully trained, hearing dogs not only provide practical assistance to deaf people but also offer lots of love and emotional support and help reduce isolation and loneli-ness, which many deaf people experience.

Trinity Rogers, 25, from Sale, has been deaf since birth, and was diagnosed with a Language Processing Disorder (LPD) at the age of seven. She was partnered with her hearing dog Alvin in 2019.

“Growing up with both deafness and a language processing disorder was a struggle. I didn’t have any friends and was bullied relentlessly at primary school. I felt very isolated.”

“I get tired much quicker than other people because I’m always trying to listen and process what’s been said, while at the same time working out what’s going on around me. With Alvin, I don’t have to stress about my safety. I can mentally switch off background noise and

focus better on speech because I know Alvin will tell me if there is anything I need to be aware of.”

“He also reminds people that I have hearing loss. People are more patient and understanding when they see Alvin with me. People who previously thought I was ignoring them, now understand that I’m actually deaf.”

Volunteering involves taking a puppy into your own home for six to 18 months at a time. We talked to existing volunteer puppy trainer Karen Hardcastle who said “It’s just been the best thing I’ve ever done – to have a dog, to learn a skill, meet lots of people, get out and about, and make a difference to someone else’s life.”

“When I speak to prospective volunteers, the first thing they say is, ‘I’d love to do it, but I couldn’t give the puppy up at the end’. Of course you miss the dog you’ve been training, but a lot of the emotion isn’t sadness, it’s happiness. To give this life-changing gift to someone you don’t know is an amazing feeling.”

If you’d like to find out more visit https://www. hearingdogs.org.uk/how-you-can-help/volunteer/ dog-trainer, or contact the volunteering team directly at volun-teer@hearingdogs.org.uk or 01844 348129.

The Februaryperfectrecipe

CHICKEN IN A POT WITH BUTTER BEANS. SERVES 4

At this time of year I want something hearty but light (normally dieting after the excesses of Christmas!). This dish fits the bill beautifully and it’s incredibly low stress. The method is a mixture of frying and poaching which means the chicken will be very juicy but also have lovely crisp skin. Apologies to anyone giving Veganuary a go.

8 Chicken Thighs

3 tblsps vegetable oil

1 small onion

6 garlic cloves skin on but squashed

300ml chicken stock

Sprigs of thyme (about half a packet)

Zest and juice of 1 lemon

300g spinach washed (any larges stalks removed)

1 x 400g butter beans including their juice. Salt the chicken pieces and leave for 10 minutes while you get the rest of the ingredients ready.

In a large shallow casserole dish put the vegetable oil over a medium heat. Place the

chicken pieces in skin side down and leave to cook for about 15 minutes. Don’t move them or you’ll tear the skin. After about 8 minutes add the garlic and onion around the chicken.

When the 15 mins are up the skin should be lovely and crisp. Turn the pieces over and pour in the water ensuring that the water just comes up to the skin not covering it. Add the thyme and lemon zest and leave to simmer for 10 minutes.

Lift the cooked chicken to a warmed plate and reduce the heat to low medium. Put the spinach into the pan with the butter beans on top. Leave to warm up and wilt for a few minutes. Return the chicken to the pan keeping the skin still above the broth. Warm through for about 5 minutes before stirring through the lemon juice.

Serve with crusty bread to mop up all the juices.

‘HOLLYWOOD of the NORTHSTOCKPORT’.

If you’ve travelled along the A6 (towards Hazel Grove) in the last month or so, either on foot or in a vehicle, you may have noticed a vibrant new addition to the Stockport skyscape. Stockport Garrick Theatre (the oldest ‘Little Theatre’ in the UK), is brimming with pride once more as the building now boasts a bold, magnificent, multi-themed, mural!

Bringing the spirit of theatre to life, whilst celebrating the creativity of the community and the magic of live performance, in all its forms, was not an easy task. However, New Zealand born artist ‘Captain Kris’ (www.captainkris.com) came to the rescue, and ‘Hollywood of the NorthStockport’ became a reality!

exterior, to one that not only truly reflected the energy and dynamics hiding within it, but highlighted the broad heritage and shared history of the artistic community throughout Stockport.

Having successfully completed Phase 1, ‘Captain Kris’ will shortly begin the next stage of the theatre’s transformation on the upper A6 section, along with Exchange Street. The Garrick will then continue the renovation of the remaining exterior areas. Once completed, there will be no doubt that Stockport Garrick Theatre and Stockport are seen to be truly alive, thriving and open to all!

In the spring of this year Stockport Garrick Theatre Limited and Totally Stockport (www.totallystockport.co.uk), had joined forces in a bid to search for an artist who could help restore and revive what was admittedly a tired

In essence, ‘little theatre status’ implies a commitment to community arts and artistic exploration outside the mainstream commercial theatre industry. In the UK, the Little Theatre Guild specifically comprises independent amateur theatres that own or lease their own premises.

BRAMHALL & WOODFORD ROTARY CLUB - INTERNATIONAL APPEAL

All UK Rotary Clubs are part of Rotary International and are committed to helping people who are less fortunate across the world. The Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club along with clubs from Congleton, Douglas (on the Isle of Man) and Blythe Bridge are currently raising funds to help a special needs school called St Francis de Sales just outside the town of Jinja in Uganda.

Culturally, children in Uganda with disabilities are commonly viewed as something shameful and are often hidden away from their communities. They rarely attend school and often suffer trauma; many girls become pregnant at a young age, and boys become unskilled impoverished farm workers before reaching their teens. Most children with disabilities are cared for by single mothers, as often fathers abandon their responsibilities. Yet these children have great potential to learn and, with support, do become productive, self-sufficient adults.

St. Francis de Sales is the only school in a 50mile radius specialising in helping children with the most common problems which are loss of hearing or sight and birth trauma resulting in cerebral palsy or brain injury. There are three times as many children with special educational needs in Uganda compared to the UK, yet,

despite the obvious need for support, Uganda has no social security and no child benefit, which means that families with children who are disabled must fend for themselves.

Consequently, the school receives no state support. Most schools in Uganda have large class sizes and charge fees but this doesn’t work for kids with disabilities. As a result, most children who are deaf, blind, have downs syndrome or cerebral palsy never go to school.

St. Francis de Sales requires improvements in facilities and equipment, mainly to help the kids have a safe night’s sleep, with beds and mosquito nets and this where this Rotary collaboration is stepping in.

We are hoping to provide: -

Mechanical well drilling

New storage and shelves

£3,800

£1,500

New Desk Furniture (15 triple desks) £1,500

Restock sick bay with medicines and malaria test kits

Repair of an ambulance

£1,000

£850

Along with 100 Mosquito nets, 20 mattresses, 10 Metallic bunk beds, 3 Extra-large cooking pans and 6 reams of braille paper per year. Bring the total to just over £11k.

The future is bright for these children. They don’t need to be looked after for all their lives, and if supported can become productive, hardworking adults. Supporting this Rotary initiative will give them this chance.

January often feels like the longest month of the year… and it never quite delivers the transformational change that society expects.

New Year’s resolutions may as well be written on pre shredded paper, to save everyone the bother of disposing of them once they fail.

So, once February arrives; the gym memberships have gone unused, the restrictive diets have fallen apart, the resolutions have failed and thankfully, people have stopped taking about the pointless 3 day fast they’ve just done.

So don’t worry if your year is not going to plan so far… you are not alone.

The New Year’s resolution circus is nothing but arbitrary calendar pressure, destined to fail. We will make changes when we are ready to make them and that could be on any day of any year of our life.

All that being said, it is clear to me that February and March can make change more likely to stick. The days are stretching longer, there’s a subtle shift in energy, new life is starting to appear and there’s far less pressure upon us than in January.

Humans don’t need perfect conditions to make changes of course, we’re sophisticated enough to run in winter, eat nutritious food all year-round, and commit to better sleep regardless of the season. But there is no doubt, as the months roll by it gets easier.

The key cornerstones of good health are physical fitness, nutrition, sleep, and mental health and they are all interconnected. Once we start to address them collectively and in a sustainable way, we get to enjoy the synergies that emerge. Here’s What You Can Do

n Morning daylight exposure - Get outside within 30 minutes of waking, even for five minutes. Natural light regulates your circadian rhythm, improving both alertness during the day and sleep quality at night.

n Move your bodyThree 10-minute bursts woven into your day beats the hour-long gym session you keep postponing. Take the stairs, walk during lunch, do press-ups or squats in your office, it all adds up.

n Sleep effectively - There are many sleep tips on my website www.niosleep. com, so please go and read them. We need 7-9 hours a night and it’s non negotiable for mood, energy and cognitive function. Establish a sleep routine that works for you and then build your life around it.

n Protein with every meal – This stabilises blood sugar, reduces cravings, and supports recovery. Aim for 25-30g per meal as a minimum and 1-2g per day per kilo of body weight.

n Adequate hydration – Most people operate chronically dehydrated. Two litres per day is the average we need. Poor hydration mimics fatigue and impedes mental clarity.

n Stop making excuses! It’s not too cold for salad. It’s not too dark to exercise. It’s not the wrong season to start. These are stories we tell ourselves to avoid taking action.

There is never a totally “right time”, and the perfect conditions for change may never arrive, but Spring is about as good as it gets.

So now that you have read this, make yourself a plan and stick to it, with the objective being that you never need to “start all over “ever again.

A CLEAR GUIDE TO THE RECENT 2025 UK BUDGET:

What the Latest Tax Changes will Mean for Individuals and Business Owners

The UK’s Autumn Budget 2025 introduced a series of tax changes that will influence how people earn, save and invest over the coming years. While the Government avoided increasing headline tax rates, several structural adjustments mean many households and businesses will experience a higher overall tax burden over time. Here is a straightforward overview of the key changes—and what they may mean for both individuals and business owners.

Frozen Tax Thresholds: Quiet but Far-Reaching

One of the most significant announcements is the extension of the freeze on income tax and National Insurance thresholds until 2031. Rates remain the same, but the thresholds at which you begin paying more tax stay fixed. As wages rise with inflation, more people are expected to drift into higher tax bands—a process often called “fiscal drag.”

For employees this means a gradual rise in their effective tax rate, even without a formal increase. For employers, particularly small businesses, the freeze could lead to higher payroll costs as staff request pay rises to offset the impact.

Higher Taxes on Savings, Dividends and Rental Income

A key theme of the Budget is aligning the taxation of “unearned” income more closely with employment income.

From April 2026, dividend tax rates rise by two percentage points for basic- and higher-rate taxpayers. From April 2027, savings and property income will be taxed at 22%, 42% and 47% at the basic, higher and additional rates.

This will affect investors, landlords, and anyone supplementing their income with dividends from a share portfolio. It also has significant consequences for business owners who take part of their income in dividends—an approach long used to manage tax efficiently. Many small company directors will need to reassess their remuneration strategies.

New High-Value Property Surcharge

From 2028, residential properties valued above £2 million will face a new annual surcharge starting at £2,500 and rising to £7,500. While this targets a small proportion of homes nationally, it will be more noticeable in areas with higher property values. Owners, including landlords, will need to factor this cost into long-term budgeting or rental

decisions.

Salary-Sacrifice Pension Contributions: A Narrowed Advantage

From April 2029, only the first £2,000 of salarysacrifice pension contributions will be exempt from National Insurance. Larger contributions will attract both employer and employee NICs. This is particularly relevant for higher earners and business owners using salary sacrifice to optimise pension funding.

Impacts on Business Owners

Business owners are likely to feel several combined effects:

n Higher dividend taxes will increase the cost of drawing profits from limited companies.

n Rising payroll pressures may affect staffing budgets as employees experience the impact of frozen thresholds.

n Reduced pension flexibility will change the way many directors structure their contributions.

n Rental property investors operating through companies may also see reduced net returns.

Conclusion

The 2025 Budget does not raise headline tax rates but reshapes the tax landscape in ways that will gradually increase liabilities for many individuals and businesses. Reviewing income structures, pension plans and investment strategies sooner rather than later will help households and business owners stay wellprepared as these changes take effect over the coming years.

It is always advisable to seek professional advice from an accountant or tax advisor to ensure that you are fulfilling your tax obligations correctly whilst making the most of any available tax saving strategies and reliefs.

Seychelles, Maldives or Mauritius? How to Choose Your Perfect Indian Ocean Escape Travel advice

They may all look like paradise — but each of these Indian Ocean icons offers a very different kind of dream. The key to finding your perfect escape lies in what you want from your time away.

The Seychelles

Scattered across the Indian Ocean off East Africa, the Seychelles is a collection of 115 islands famed for their dramatic granite boulders, emerald jungles and pristine beaches. It’s perfect for travellers who crave nature, space and serenity.

Mahé blends lively markets and scenic trails with tropical calm, while Praslin is home to the legendary Vallée de Mai. Then there’s La Digue — an island with no cars and a pace of life that feels timeless. Think turquoise lagoons, slow bicycle rides and beaches so beautiful they don’t look real.

The Maldives

A necklace of 26 coral atolls and over 1,000 islands, the Maldives defines barefoot luxury. Each resort sits on its own island, with soft white sands, dazzling lagoons and often, iconic overwater villas. Days revolve around relaxation, indulgent dining and spectacular snorkelling or diving.

This is a destination for privacy, pampering and romance — perfect for couples or anyone who wants to switch off completely. Getting there is part of the adventure: after a direct flight to Malé, guests transfer by speedboat or seaplane to their island paradise.

Mauritius

Larger and more diverse than its neighbours, Mauritius is a single island bursting with colour, character and culture. It combines golden beaches and turquoise lagoons with rainforests, waterfalls and lively towns.

Here you’ll find adventure alongside relaxation — from hiking in Black River Gorges National Park to kite surfing at Le Morne and exploring markets in Port Louis. Mauritius has broad appeal for families, couples and groups, with resorts catering to all ages and budgets.

When to Go

All three islands enjoy warm, tropical climates

year-round. For calm seas and gentle breezes, visit the Seychelles between April and November, the Maldives from November to April, and Mauritius from May to December for its driest, sunniest weather.

The Beaches

Seychelles beaches like Anse Lazio and Anse Source d’Argent are pictureperfect and often blissfully uncrowded. In the Maldives, every resort boasts postcard sands and crystal lagoons with colourful reefs just steps from shore. Mauritius offers variety — calm coves for swimming, lively family beaches, and dramatic backdrops like Le Morne’s mountain views.

Who It’s Best For

n Nature lovers will adore the Seychelles’ wild beauty.

n Couples seeking romance can’t beat the Maldives’ seclusion and luxury.

n Families and explorers will find endless things to see and do in Mauritius.

Cost and Convenience

Mauritius offers the easiest access with direct flights and excellent value across all budgets.

The Maldives also has direct flights but higher transfer costs. The Seychelles often requires a stopover — but that just adds to the sense of adventure.

In a nutshell:

n Seychelles — unspoiled nature and tranquillity

n Maldives — luxury and romance

n Mauritius — culture, variety and family fun

Whichever you choose, paradise is guaranteed. The only mistake? Trying to decide alone.

& Wellbeing MASSAGE MATTERS

Wondering if a massage might help with a sore neck and shoulders or an achy, tired back?

(More than you think)

Everybody knows that a good massage can have a soothing and calming effect, especially if you’re feeling stressed or anxious.

Let’s take a closer look at aging.

Massage has been used for centuries, as an effective way to relieve muscle tension and relax both body and mind. But that’s not all it can do for you, what are some other benefits of massage ?

According to the AMTA Consumer Survey, 67% of individuals surveyed claim their primary reason for receiving a massage in the previous 12 months was medical (41%) or stress (26%) related.

Reduces stress, boosts mental health, relieves pain

A build-up of chronic stress can impact your health in various ways, physically and mentally. Massage can help you relieve some of that accumulated stress before it overwhelms you. Stress can exacerbate pain, so if massage therapy helps you manage your stress levels, it follows that this can result in better pain relief.

Improved skin tone and circulation

The friction of a massage warms your tissues and enhances the flow of oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood. increasing circulation boosts the delivery of this nourishment to muscles, connective tissues, and skin. This extra nourishment can enhance physical performance and support injury recovery.

Boosts your immune system

Massage also helps to stimulate the lymphatic system, supporting your body to eliminate toxins and strengthening your immune system. It can also reduce the levels of inflammatory cytokines and cortisol in your body, returning it to better balance. Some research shows that regular massage can help to manage symptoms in those with autoimmune diseases.

Relieves tired and stiff joints

Recent evidence supports the effectiveness of manual therapy, including massage, in sports injury rehabilitation and general pain management for those with chronic conditions including Arthritis, MS, ME, CFS, Fibromyalgia.

Post Operative Recuperation

The effect of massage in enhancing blood flow to the tissues surrounding an injury provides the nutrients it requires for repair. It also removes waste products from the site. Massage loosens and works through scar tissue and adhesions, supporting mobility around surgery /trauma sites and compensatory aches/pains/imbalances.

Oncology Support

Working in collaboration with medical team to support and encourage relaxation, helping manage treatment related symptoms such as nausea, aching limbs, lymphodoema as well as Scar Therapy to release tightness from surgery/ radiotherapy.

Relieves swelling/oedema

Lymphatic Drainage massage is a gentle treatment to help reduce swelling in the tissues, commonly occurring in the lower limbs and arms . Many people struggle with Lymphodoema if their mobility is limited, compounding the problem. Massage, along with complementary self care protocols aids the normal flow of fluid to relieve the congestion.

Massage, the Power of Touch, to relax, restore, revitalise, release, rejuvenate and rebalance Every Body.

WINTER HOME

Ido secretly love the dark wintery months. It’s the perfect excuse to curl up on the sofa with some great (or trashy) TV or a film, warm comfies covering me from head to toe and I light a candle or two. If anybody comes to the door after 5pm I’m almost disgusted and exclaim “Who’s that?!”, much to my kid’s amusement.

I have spent up at Christmas, fed everybody, cleaned the house enough, as if we always live like that, and now it’s my turn to hibernate.

or some faux flowers (there’s none in the garden yet) and a glass of wine!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still working in the day and there’s always something or other needs fixing, replacing and always hungry people of a weekend but I long for when it darkens, the heating goes on along with the lamps (never the big light) and I fight for the best blankets with the cat.

You really don’t need much to create a warm cosy décor in the earliest part of the year. You may have some candle gifts from Christmas, gather them together with differing heights, on a suitable tray for safety and add pretty things to set them off – maybe a picture, a little plant

Throws are welcome around the house so that wherever you land there is something close by to keep your cockles warmed. The fluffier the better, but the key is in layering them. Try to keep to similar colours along the dark to light colour chart, or put colours together that work – my current favourite is yellows and pinks. If you have a salmon pink, choose a muted yellow and creams for a calming colour palette. If you’ve more beiges, then you can go all the way to deep tan for a sumptuous feel. For tips and tricks,

follow me on Instagram. If you’d love me to help you, please do get in touch. Sharon.
