Welcome to the July / August issue of SKBramhall & Woodford.
As you can see from the front cover, we are in the middle of the World Cup. But for those of you who are not interested in staying up until 4am to watch Kane and Haaland, we have plenty to offer!
Great articles from all our regulars; Janet has her Singapore Sea Bream with Thai Basil and Chilli recipe (p.40), Sharon has some inspiring words on how to make the perfect bedroom. (p.14).
With over 20 pages of editorial, I really hope we have all bases covered for you to have a good read.
Enjoy the summer and I’ll catch you next time
See you next time.

It’s the end of the day, you’re ready for bed. Upon entering your bedroom, do you smile – it’s delightful, this calm and soothing space, or sigh realising now there are more jobs to put on your list? Go ahead, update the bedroom, being the last thing you see at night brings calm if all is beautiful.

What sort of design would you have? Here’s some ideas in the pictures, all beautiful and each very personal to the person’s taste. Some prefer a completely neutral palette in the bedroom. It soothes you, no big design or colours to distract you from floating off to sleep, but to make it work it needs careful layering of textures, a small amount of subtle patterns works and careful choice of wood tones. Without these elements and soft lighting, it can feel bland or clinical and hard. A dark bedroom works so well, I love this one with the deep blue and taupe walls along the same tones, the very dark bed but notice the much lighter carpet, curtains, pictures and lighting, again being broken up by different tones in the bedding. Good quality fabrics, flooring and finishes along with carefully considered lighting is key to this cosy scheme. Colour or pattern might be your thing, images here represent both. The pop of mustard

upholstery on the bed is the hero piece in this room, set against darker walls to really make it stand out. Pair with gold framed side tables and lamp, colours to match in the artwork, and notice the co-ordinating bedding all sit with the timber floor to ground the colours for the completed look. For pattern, go with an oversized headboard like a throne! Keeping to the same colours you can add different patterns in the room and tone it down with background neutrals.
Make your bedroom feel like you’ve gone away to a lovely hotel, and if you need help send me a message. For tips and tricks, follow me on Instagram. If you’d love me to help you, please do get in touch. Sharon.

Some are calling it the “Downton Abbey” effect, but whatever it is, there is no doubt we are seeing a return to formal dining – and what the social media influencers are calling “table landscaping”.
And there was no better backdrop for the sale of these two magnificent punch bowls than our Bishton Hall saleroom – a grade-II listed Georgian mansion in Wolseley Bridge.
It was easy to imagine a grand dinner party taking place in the hall in centuries past, with these two bowls taking centre stage on a large mahogany dining table, glinting in the candlelight.
The first bowl, dated 1890, sold for £4,400 – almost double its guide price of £2,300 while the other, dated 1908, fetched £1,800 – tripling its
low estimate of £600.
These Edwardian beauties are both sculptural and usable.
A decade ago many large silver bowls, monteiths and punch bowls struggled to make a profit unless they were exceptional makers.

The monumental silver monteith, dated 1890, sold for £4,400 –almost double its guide price of £2,300

Another silver monteith, dated 1908, fetched £1,800 – tripling its low estimate of £600 at the Super Sunday sale at Bishton Hall in Staffordshire
Now they’re appearing on kitchen islands, in champagne displays and even as a part of grand floral arrangements.
While a punch bowl has a broad and open design, a monteith is a more specialised form of bowl, developed in the late 17th century, and distinguished by its scalloped rim.
The notches allowed wine glasses to hang upside down in iced water so they could be cooled before use.
The term monteith is believed to be derived from a Scottish gentleman named Monsieur Monteigh, who wore a cloak with a distinctive “u” shape at the bottom.
Many Monteiths feature a detachable rim. When the notched rim was removed, the Monteith functioned exactly like a regular punch bowl.
Every last Sunday of the month we host a ‘Super Sunday’ lifestyle sale at Bishton Hall – with the next on June 28 followed by July 26, with viewing on the Saturday before from 10am-4pm.
From Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm our team of experts is on hand to value everything from punch bowls to Dinky toys.
So if you’ve ever wondered about the story or value behind a treasured piece of jewellery, this is the perfect opportunity.
But even if you don’t want a piece valued, Bishton Hall makes the perfect destination for a free, dog-friendly family day out this summer.
Bishton Hall and Garden is located at Bellamour Lane, Stafford, ST17 0XN, telephone 01889 882397 or email enquiries@hansonsbishton.co.uk

June marked one of the most anticipated periods in the Bramhall Golf Club calendar as members came together to celebrate Captains’ Month. The Captain’s and Lady Captain’s competitions are among the club’s flagship annual events, providing an opportunity to recognise the dedication of the club’s dignitaries while enjoying outstanding golf, hospitality, and entertainment. Both the Captain and Lady Captain hosted their respective competition days, each culminating in memorable evening celebrations that reflected the spirit and camaraderie that make Bramhall Golf Club such a special place.

Lady Captain’s Day proved to be a tremendous success, bringing together 93 ladies for a day of competitive golf, friendship, and celebration. Following the golf, members enjoyed a wonderful Spanish-themed dinner before being entertained by a spectacular Elton John tribute performance that had more than 100 ladies dancing late into the evening. Reflecting on her special day, the Lady Captain said:
“What an amazing and very special day, highlighting exactly why Bramhall Golf Club is such an incredible club.
I thoroughly enjoyed every minute, from being on the 1st tee to greet every single one of the 93 ladies who played on the day, all arriving with smiles and wonderfully encouraging comments, through to an excellent Spanish-themed dinner, with the braised beef cheeks proving to be a particular highlight. The outstanding entertainment from Elton John rounded off the evening perfectly.
Inclusivity is incredibly important to us, so it was wonderful that our Bridge Ladies were able to enjoy their own indoor competition, followed by a relaxing afternoon tea, which I was delighted to join.
The course was presented in excellent condition as always, although strong winds and intermittent squally showers provided a stern test for the field.
Congratulations to Lady Captain’s Prize winner Vicky Clewley, whose performance was thoroughly deserving of the recognition she received, and to Jamie Philpot, winner of the 9-hole competition.”
Captain’s Weekend was equally memorable, with members enjoying a packed programme of golf and social events. The festivities began on Friday with a fun cross-country competition before continuing on Saturday with the first round of the two-day competition followed by a sold-out dinner and dance, complete with live band entertainment.
The Captain reflected on his special weekend:
“Having been a member of the club for almost 40 years, being appointed Captain was a tremendous honour, and Captain’s Weekend is undoubtedly the highlight of the Captain’s year.

Months of planning and preparation, supported by our General Manager and team, House Manager and Chef, the Handicap Committee, Professional Staff, and many volunteers, culminated in a fantastic weekend. From Friday’s fun cross-country competition to a packed Saturday dinner and dance, the atmosphere was superb throughout.
Blessed with excellent weather and outstanding participation, the weekend concluded with an exciting finish and prize presentation. My sincere thanks go to everyone who contributed to and supported this memorable occasion.”
The feedback received following both events was overwhelmingly positive. Members were complimentary about every aspect of the celebrations, from the exceptional condition and presentation of the golf course to the quality of the food, organisation, and evening entertainment.
Above all, members expressed their appreciation for the incredible generosity, enthusiasm, and commitment shown by both Captains in delivering such outstanding occasions. Captains’ Month once again showcased the very best of Bramhall Golf Club and reinforced the strong sense of community that continues to make the club so special.

Hydrangea paniculata is one of the true stars of the summer garden. While many shrubs burst into life in spring and fade by midsummer, this wonderful plant takes its time. It can seem slow to wake up after winter, often looking bare while other plants are already growing strongly. But patience is rewarded in spectacular fashion because by July, Hydrangea paniculata begins producing enormous coneshaped flower heads that continue right through until October.

Often described as looking like giant ice cream cones, the blooms are both elegant and dramatic. They stand proudly above the foliage and gradually change colour as the season progresses, giving months of interest in the garden. As summer turns to autumn, the flowers dry beautifully on the plant, adding structure and texture long after many other shrubs have finished.
One of the reasons Hydrangea paniculata has become so popular is its reliability. It is hardy, easy to grow, and performs well in most garden soils provided they are reasonably moist and well-drained. Unlike some other hydrangeas, it flowers on new wood, meaning it is less affected by late frosts and can be pruned confidently in late winter or early spring to encourage strong growth and larger blooms.
This month I am going to look at three of my favourite varieties, each bringing something unique to the garden.
First is Hydrangea ‘Limelight’, perhaps one of the best-known and most widely loved varieties. Its large flowers emerge a soft lime-green before gradually fading too creamy white. As the season develops, hints of pink can appear, especially in sunny positions. The fresh green and white colouring works beautifully in both modern and traditional gardens, and the flowers are excellent for cutting and drying.
Next is Hydrangea ‘Vanille Fraise’, a stunning variety whose name translates as “vanilla strawberry,” perfectly describing its colouring. The flower heads open creamy white before slowly turning shades of blush pink and deep strawberry red as autumn approaches. Often, several colours can appear on the same flower head at once, creating a truly eye-catching display. It adds warmth and romance to borders and pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses.

Finally, there is Hydrangea ‘Phantom’, known for producing some of the largest flower heads of all paniculata hydrangeas. Its huge creamy white blooms can reach impressive sizes and create a real statement in the garden. Despite their scale, the stems are sturdy and hold the flowers upright well. As autumn arrives, the blooms soften to gentle pink and ivory tones, extending the season of interest even further.
Hydrangea paniculata works wonderfully as a feature shrub, in mixed borders, or even planted in groups for a dramatic effect. It enjoys sun or partial shade and benefits from regular watering during dry spells, especially while establishing.
For gardeners looking for a dependable shrub that delivers months of spectacular flowers from midsummer into autumn, Hydrangea paniculata is hard to beat. It may be late to start, but once it begins flowering, it truly steals the show.
Happy Gardening!

Something shifts when summer arrives. You might not be able to put your finger on it immediately, but there is a change — in your mood, your energy, your general outlook. That is not coincidence. That is biology. When light levels increase and the days stretch out, the brain responds in a very real, very measurable way. Serotonin production rises — the neurotransmitter most associated with mood stability, motivation, and a general sense of wellbeing. At the same time, melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel drowsy and flat, drops back. Your circadian rhythm recalibrates. The result? You feel more alert, more optimistic, and more engaged with life. This is not a placebo effect. It is your nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Your Summer Reset — Action Plan
n Get outside before 10am. Even fifteen minutes of morning light helps anchor your circadian rhythm and drives serotonin production earlier in the day. This single habit has a disproportionate impact on mood and energy.

n Move your body daily — even briefly. Exercise increases BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which supports neuroplasticity and stress resilience. Summer makes this considerably easier to sustain than the darker months, so take full advantage of that window.
n Reduce screen time in the evenings. Longer daylight means your brain is already dealing with more light stimulation. Protecting your melatonin production after 9pm will improve your sleep quality noticeably.
There is also the vitamin D factor. We are chronically deficient in the UK for much of the year. Vitamin D plays a direct role in mood regulation, immune function, and cognitive performance. Summer gives us access to it in the most natural way possible — simply being outside.
So if summer is already doing the heavy lifting neurologically, the smart move is to lean into it. Think of this season as a natural reset point — a moment when your brain and body are already primed and receptive, and it would be a waste not to take advantage of that.
The idea of a seasonal reset is not new. Humans have marked seasonal transitions for thousands of years — not just culturally, but psychologically. We use external change as a prompt for internal change. Summer is the most powerful of these natural anchors. Unlike the pressure of January, there is no guilt attached to it. It simply arrives, and with it comes a genuine biological invitation to feel better and perform better.
The question is what you choose to do with that invitation.
n Set one clear intention for the season. Not a list — one thing. It might be something like committing to a daily ten-minute walk without your phone, finally prioritising your sleep, or spending genuinely present time with the people who matter most to you. The brain responds well to focused goals, and the novelty of a new season makes this a natural moment to anchor a new direction.
n Notice what you notice. Mindfulness does not need to be complicated. Summer is full of sensory anchors — warmth, sound, smell. Using them deliberately, even for a moment, is enough to bring you back into the present.
Summer is not just a season. It is an opportunity, and your brain is already halfway there.

When an older loved one begins to struggle with everyday tasks, many families find themselves asking the same difficult question: “Is it time for a care home?”
This question often arises after a fall, a hospital stay, increasing forgetfulness, or concerns about safety at home. While these worries are understandable, moving into residential care is not always the only option. In many cases, the right support at home can help people maintain their independence, remain connected to their community, and continue living in familiar surroundings.

Familiar surroundings, treasured memories, established routines, and close connections with neighbours, friends, and family all contribute to emotional wellbeing. This can be particularly important for people living with dementia, who may find comfort and reassurance in a familiar environment.
Home care can also be adapted as needs change.
One of the first things to consider is whether the challenges being experienced are occasional difficulties or signs that additional support is needed. Families may notice unopened mail piling up, missed medication, changes in personal hygiene, difficulties preparing meals, or a home that is becoming harder to manage. Sometimes the signs are more subtle, such as increased loneliness, reduced confidence, or avoiding activities that were once enjoyed.
It is also common for family members to find themselves providing more support than they realise. What starts as helping with shopping or housework can gradually develop into managing appointments, medication, meals, and personal care. While many relatives are happy to help, the demands can increase over time, making it important to consider whether professional support could benefit everyone involved.
The good news is that needing support does not automatically mean giving up independence. Home care services can be tailored to an individual’s needs, whether that means a few hours of support each week or multiple visits throughout the day. Care can include assistance with personal care, medication, meal preparation, companionship, shopping, housekeeping, and support to attend appointments or social activities.
For many people, remaining at home offers significant benefits. Home is often where people feel most comfortable and confident.
Rather than making a major life change immediately, support can increase gradually over time. This flexibility allows individuals to receive the right level of care while maintaining as much independence as possible.
Of course, every situation is different. There may be circumstances where residential care becomes the most appropriate option, particularly when someone requires constant supervision or highly specialised support. However, before assuming a move into a care home is necessary, it is worth exploring what support can be provided at home.
The most important question is not whether it is time for a care home, but rather what support is needed to help someone live safely, comfortably, and with dignity. By exploring the available options early and seeking advice when concerns first arise, families can make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary stress.
For many people, the right care at the right time can make all the difference, allowing them to remain independent and continue enjoying life in the place they call home.

Summer is traditionally a time for family days out, ice creams, and the annual challenge of keeping children entertained during the school holidays. This year, however, the Government’s new Great British Summer Savings Scheme is giving the hospitality and leisure sectors something else to talk about.
Running from 25 June to 1 September 2026, the scheme temporarily reduces VAT from 20% to 5% on a range of qualifying family activities and children’s meals. The aim is to make summer attractions more affordable for families while encouraging spending in businesses that rely heavily on seasonal visitors.
For many operators, it could provide a welcome boost during one of the busiest periods of the year.
What’s Included?
The VAT reduction applies to a variety of familyfocused activities and services. These include qualifying children’s meals sold from dedicated children’s menus, family and children’s tickets to cinemas and theatres, and admission to attractions such as zoos, theme parks, soft-play centres and adventure parks.
For families watching their budgets, even modest savings can make a difference. A day out that might previously have seemed a little too expensive could become a more attractive option. For businesses, that could translate into higher visitor numbers and increased spending over the summer months.
As every accountant knows, tax reliefs rarely come without conditions.
Not every meal, ticket or attraction will qualify automatically. Children’s meals generally need to be specifically marketed and sold as children’s menu items, while special rules apply to advance bookings, memberships and season tickets. Businesses will therefore need to review their offerings carefully rather than assuming the reduced rate applies across the board.
In other words, before replacing your calculator with a deckchair, it is worth taking time to understand the detail.
While customers may be enjoying discounted days out, finance teams are likely to be spending part of the summer ensuring systems are working correctly.
Businesses will need to update tills, booking systems, invoicing software and accounting records to reflect the temporary VAT reduction. Particular care will be needed where bookings are made in advance or where supplies span the start or end of the relief period.
The challenge is not simply applying a new VAT rate; it is remembering to switch back again once the scheme comes to an end. Temporary tax changes can often create more administration than permanent ones.
The Great British Summer Savings Scheme is designed to put a little extra spending power into families’ pockets while supporting businesses in the hospitality, leisure and entertainment sectors.
For families, it could mean more affordable days out and opportunities to create lasting memories. For businesses, it offers the prospect of increased demand during the peak holiday season. And for accountants, it is another reminder that while everyone else may be heading to the beach, VAT never really takes a holiday.
Still, if a tax relief can help fund a few extra trips to the zoo this summer, perhaps that is something we can all smile about.

Spotting when an older loved one needs more support is rarely straightforward. Subtle changes - physical, emotional, or behavioural - can signal that they may no longer be coping as well as they once did.
When families notice that their loved ones forget to turn off appliances, often feeling disorientated and prone to falls, or feeling frustrated, anxious and slowly withdrawing themselves from their own family and friends – many consider, is it time to consider care at home, or would a care home offer the right level of support?
As a starting point, families would start by comparing the two options and here’s how care at Care UK homes would differ to having care at home:
Time spent with each person can often be very limited, which means that your loved one may not receive such person centred care.
• When carers are instructed to cook meals, their nutritional knowledge and culinary skills may be limited.
• Although a carer may be able to support your loved one to get around their home, there are many hours left which are spent alone and if there is the risk of falling, they may need a livein carer or another solution.
Care home
At Care UK there is no limit to the time we spend with residents, and we deliver care that’s personalised to your loved one’s needs, preferences and interests.
• At Care UK our chef-led kitchen teams provide delicious home-cooked meals throughout the day. Everything is tailored to your loved one’s needs and tastes, and the team provides tasty meals for residents who need a fortified, modified or specialist diet. Meal times at the home are all about enjoying food and spending time with friends in beautiful surroundings. We’re happy to prepare meals at any time. Snacks and drinks are always available too.
• We provide round-the-clock care and support whenever your loved one needs us - giving you and your loved one the ultimate peace of mind.
• Whilst care at home offers familiarity, flexibility and a sense of independence for your loved ones, we find that most families would eventually opt for long term, quality care at care homes as they prioritise long term stability and optimal mental and physical well being for their loved ones.

At our Manchester care homes, we offer care that’s truly personalised – from the moment your loved one moves in, they can hang their favourite pictures in their rooms and even chat to our Head Chef on how they want their favourite homemade dish to be cooked. Our purposebuilt home offers many quality facilities which include beautifully designed living spaces, stylish lounges, cafe and a hair and beauty salon. Residents living in Care UK homes are offered a range of day trips and organised activities in their surrounding areas. These outings are a great chance for residents to get out and about and enjoy activities, exercise and a change of scenery.
Our experienced and dedicated activities team organises daily activities that are suited to all residents with different abilities and needs. Residents of Abney Court and Ladybrook Manor also enjoy outings to local national trust parks such as Quarry Bank Mill and Dunham Masey.

I made this the other day and it was really simple (after some chopping) and very delicious. I’d serve it with some plain boiled rice and a cold beer.
Serves 4
4 Sea Bream fillets (You can use whole Sea Bream but it’s fiddly)
4 tbsp cooking oil
1 tbsp cornflour
A thumb sized piece of ginger peeled and julienned
2 fresh red chillies (medium hot) seeded and julienned
1 red onion finely sliced

125g Thai Basil chopped inc stalks
125g Coriander chopped inc stalks
3 spring onions trimmed and julienned
Sauce
4 tbsp Lime juice (about 3 limes)
1 tbsp soft brown sugar
2 tsp oyster sauce
2 tbsp dark soy sauce
1 tbsp light soy sauce
Start by mixing up the sauce in a jam jar – put it aside
Put the oven on low and put in your plates and a serving platter. Put the cornflour onto a plate then slash the skin of the fish fillets and coat them in the cornflour. Heat the oil in a large non stick frying pan or wok. Fry the fillets for a couple of minutes each side until they are nicely browned. Don’t overcook the fish. Set the fish aside on the warmed serving platter.
Wash out the pan and add a little of the oil. When hot add the chillies, onions and ginger. Cook for a couple of minutes then add the sauce before adding the basil, coriander and spring onions. Cook for another couple of minutes (you may want to add a splash of water to make more sauce. Pour the contents of the pan over the fish and serve with the rice.
Enjoy.

SATURDAY 4TH JULY: PRESTBURY CHORAL SOCIETY SUMMER CONCERT
Our forthcoming concert at St Bartholomew’s Church, Wilmslow, from 7.30pm will be a real treat. Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors, whether that’s tending the garden, exploring local parks, or spending quality time with family. One of the simplest ways to enhance wellbeing during the warmer months is through the power of scent, both in the garden and at home.
Many popular garden plants offer beautiful aromas as well as visual appeal. Lavender is perhaps the best known, filling the air with its calming fragrance on warm summer evenings. Rosemary brings a fresh, herbaceous scent that can help create a sense of clarity and focus, while mint adds an invigorating freshness that awakens the senses. Lemon balm, with its gentle citrus aroma, is another delightful addition to the garden and is often associated with feelings of calm and relaxation.

Taking a few moments to brush your hands through these fragrant plants while watering or weeding can be a lovely way to reconnect with nature and enjoy a mindful pause during a busy day.
Summer also offers an abundance of uplifting essential oils that can bring the freshness of the season indoors. Citrus oils such as mandarin, sweet orange, bergamot and grapefruit create a bright, cheerful atmosphere and are perfect for bringing a little sunshine into the home. Herbal oils including rosemary and peppermint add freshness and vitality, echoing the scents found in many summer gardens. For quieter moments, lavender, Roman chamomile and frankincense can help create a peaceful and relaxing environment.
After a day out with the children—whether it’s a trip to the park, a family picnic, or a summer
holiday adventure—many parents find themselves needing a little time to unwind. Aromatherapy can help create a calming atmosphere at home and signal that it’s time to slow down.
Mandarin essential oil is a wonderful choice during the summer months. Its sweet, cheerful citrus scent is uplifting and comforting, helping to create a positive and relaxed environment.
Lavender essential oil remains a favourite for evening use, thanks to its soothing aroma and ability to encourage a sense of calm.
A simple way to enjoy these oils is to add a few drops to an aromatherapy diffuser in the early evening. Combining mandarin and lavender creates a beautifully balanced blend that feels both uplifting and relaxing. The bright citrus notes of mandarin help ease the transition from a busy day, while lavender encourages rest and tranquillity.
As summer unfolds, consider embracing the scents of the season. Whether you’re enjoying the fragrance of lavender in the garden or diffusing a calming blend at home, these simple rituals can help bring moments of peace and wellbeing to everyday life.

Does housework, gardening, sitting at a desk or driving the car for long periods cause back pain?
Many of us suffer from aches and pains that make daily tasks hard to complete. A couple Pilates sessions a week can go a long way to making this easier.
Pilates isn’t just for young women looking to keep fit and tone their stomachs. Pilates offers medical benefits for people of all ranges.

Back Pain – This is a problem that affects people of all ages. Long periods of bad posture can really leave your spine feeling weak. Pilates will help to strengthen the muscles around the spine to prevent you doing any damage. It will also allow for added flexibility meaning your back can handle being sat at a desk for long periods of time, or even being hunched during sports. For example, scrumming in Rugby.
Flexibility – You might be a little surprised to hear that your flexibility can affect your dayto-day life! But people whose muscles are supple and flexible are less likely to suffer from muscular injuries. Furthermore, a recent study showed that although a course of Pilates didn’t significantly reduce falls amongst seniors. There were less injurious falls. This shows how people with more supple muscles were hardier.
Sleep – It’s no secret that exercise helps you to sleep better. A recent study found that Pilates can improve sleep patterns, reduce daytime sleepiness and reduce broken sleep cycles. Improves your mood – Pilates creates an endorphin rush, this can significantly improve your mood. It’s not just a brief rush though, there is a sustained pleasure from living in a fit, flexible and pain free body.
Great for Cardio – People often dismiss Pilates for not being a proper cardiovascular work out. What they don’t realise is that Joseph Pilates was an asthmatic. The exercises he designed improves breathing by strengthening the muscles around your ribs and chest. This helps you to breath more efficiently. If you want to get your blood pumping then go for a run, but if you really want to improve your cardio then combine it with Pilates.
Improves your Core – Pilates very much focuses on creating a strong core. Day to day movement is all driven from the abdominals, glutes and inner thighs. This is the exact powerhouse that Pilates works.
It’s a whole-body thing – Pilates builds strength across the whole body. If you’re in the gym pumping weights you are only working isolates muscles. This doesn’t translate in to whole body functional strength. Quite likely, it will leave you lopsided and imbalanced. Pilates is designed to build a balanced functional strength that can generate real power throughout the whole body.
Pilates is for life and can be life changing, so join a Pilates class now!
