UPDATE FROM ANDREWS Dear family members and friends of Andrews Senior Care, We had a wonderful December at our homes. We celebrated the Christmas season with special meals, musical guests, visits from daycares and schools and even had a few visits from Santa. This month, our Summerside residents will enjoy their first Tim Hortons coffee social of 2024, courtesy of student volunteers Olivia and Chelsey. Our Stratford residents will have the chance to take part in the first even men’s club meeting and our activity directors will be taking part in an information session on strength training for seniors, which we hope to incorporate in our exercise programs going forward. With 2023 behind us, we’d like to wish all our residents and their families a wonderful new year. Thank you for your continued trust as we embark on another year together. ANDREWS COOKBOOK SUGAR COOKIES

In every family there's that one dish that mom or dad makes better than anyone else in the world. Maybe it's dad's chili recipe, or mom's secret to perfect ginger snap cookies. These dishes and desserts become family legend, favourites at holiday parties, birthdays or family dinners. The recipes are often passed down through generations and become a part of a family's story. We wanted to share those stories. Every month we feature a different recipe submitted by one of our residents. This month we feature a sugar cookie recipe from resident Wanda Ings.

Sugar Cookies

Ingredients 1/2 cup shortening 1 cup sugar 1 egg 3 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla 1/4 cup of milk

Directions Combine ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Roll into thin layer of dough and cut into desired shapes. Baked in preheated 350 F degree oven for 8-10 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Cool on a baking sheet before serving or decorating.

Our above and beyond winner for December is Sukhwinder Dhillon, aka Sukh. Sukh is a team player who takes pride in his work, shows kindness toward staff and residents and always has a smile on his face. We are fortunate to have him at Andrews of Parkhill. Sukh started working as a cook at Parkhill approximately six months ago. Prior to joining our team, he worked in hotels and hospitality in his home country of India and then as a cook in restaurants in Montreal and Prince Edward Island. He said the most rewarding part of his current role is making a positive impact on the residents. “I always try to make them happy,” he said. In his spare time, Sukh enjoys reading and cooking. His favourite dish to make is sarson ka saag, a dish of mustard greens cooked with spices often served with makki ki roti, an unleavened bread made from corn meal.

Our Above and Beyond winner for December is Shawn Burns. Shawn is great with our residents. We’ve had many kind words from residents about how much they love when Shawn is working. He’s friendly, compassionate and a team player. We are fortunate to have him at Andrews of Summerside. Shawn started working with us an RCW two years ago. Prior to joining our team, he worked as a PSW in Ontario and briefly as on a mussel boat here in P.E.I. He said the best part of his day is getting to engage with the residents. “I like working with the residents,” she said. “Making a difference for them makes life better for me.” Outside of work, Shawn enjoys spending time trout fishing and hiking.

Our Above and Beyond winner this month is Epi Espara. Epi is a hard-working, dedicated team player. We are fortunate to have her at Andrews of Charlottetown. Epi started working at Andrews 9 years ago. Initially, she worked as a caregiver and in the dining room before moving in housekeeping. Prior to joining our team, she worked as a private nanny. Her favourite part of the day is getting to spend time with our residents. “I enjoy time with the residents,” she said. “They are caring. I consider them my second family.” When Epi is not working, she volunteers her time at our home helping with church services and enjoys walking the Confederation Trail.

Our Above and Beyond winner for July is Shianne Retieff. Shianne consistently goes above and beyond for our residents and her team members. We are lucky to have her. Shianne started working as a housekeeper at Andrews of Stratford in 2022. Prior to joining our team, she worked on the front desk at the Quality Inn. In her experience, Andrews is one big family. “I really enjoy the atmosphere,” she said. “Everyone is super friendly. I really like how everyone really cares about the residents.” When she’s not at work, Shianne keeps busy spending time with her four kids and tending to her event décor business Shiny Custom Designs.

Our Above and Beyond winner for December is Donna LeClair. Donna consistently goes beyond the call of duty for our residents and her fellow team members. We appreciate everything she does and are lucky to have her at Andrews of Park West. Donna began working as a caregiver and shift supervisor at Andrews in 2011. Prior to joining Andrews, she worked in banking for approximately 30 years. Like all of our team members, she is passionate about senior care. “I love my work,” she said. “I enjoy interacting with the residents and putting a smile on their faces.” Outside of work, Donna keeps busy spending time with her grandchildren.
