UPDATE FROM STRATFORD Dear family members and friends of Andrews of Stratford, We had a wonderful October at our home. We celebrated Thanksgiving, Halloween, took part in outdoor fall activities and hosted musical guest Trevor Baker. Looking ahead, we will be observing Remembrance Day, enjoying live music and beginning decorating for the holidays. Wishing you all a wonderful fall. Sincerely,

ACTIVE AT ANDREWS

Andrews of Charlottetown residents recently had the opportunity to show off their quilts and quilting knowledge at the home’s inaugural quilt show. Inspired by Andrews volunteer and quilter Sheila, the show featured an afternoon of quilt presentations, discussion and refreshments. Residents enjoyed hearing from guest presenters as well as sharing their own quilts and stories. Heather Campbell, Andrews of Charlottetown activity coordinator and show organizer, was thrilled with the success of the event. “It is beyond my expectations,” she said. “I knew it was going to be good, but little did I know how good. I’m over the moon.” She intends to make it an annual event.

Saskatchewan musician Trevor Baker recently toured our Andrews homes during the Maritime leg of his ongoing tour. He regaled our residents with funny stories, heart-felt original songs and his natural charm. It was a pleasure having him visit and we’d love him to stop in again the next time he’s in P.E.I.

ANDREWS COOKBOOK FLORENCE’S DATE SQUARES

In every family there's that one dish that mom or dad makes better than anyone else in the world. Maybe it's dad's chili recipe, or mom's secret to perfect ginger snap cookies. These dishes and desserts become family legend, favourites at holiday parties, birthdays or family dinners. The recipes are often passed down through generations and become a part of a family's story. We wanted to share those stories. Every month we feature a different recipe submitted by one of our residents. This month we feature a date square recipe from resident Florence McNally. This recipe is a favourite in Florence’s family. A family event or special occasion wasn’t complete without a pan of date squares fresh from the oven.

Florence’s Date Squares

Ingredients This recipe is a favourite in Florence’s family. A family event or special occasion wasn’t complete without a pan of date squares fresh from the oven. Crumble 1 ½cups flour 2 cups rolled oats ¼ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 2 squares of softened margarine (½ cup each Blue Bonnett) Date mixture 1 cup brown sugar 2 packages of dates, separated ¾ cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions Combine date mixture and boil with ¾ cup of water. Place ½ crumble mixture in greased 9x13 pan. Add cooked date mixture. Cover with remaining crumble mixture and bake in preheated 325 degree oven for 25 minutes or until golden brown.

‘I’m proud to do it’ Residents share why Remembrance Day is important to them Remembrance Day is an especially important day for Andrews of Charlottetown resident Freda Pineau. Both of Freda’s husbands (she remarried Arthur Pineau after her first husband Ferdinand Gallant died from complications with ALS) served in Europe in the Second World War, landing on Juno Beach during the D-Day Invasion in June, 1944. Every year she makes the trip out to Rustico, her hometown and where both Arthur and Ferdinand grew up, for the Remembrance Day ceremony. She’s even had the honour of laying wreaths in memory of her husbands. “I’m proud to do it,” she said. Freda’s experience is not unique among residents at Andrews Senior Care. Many either served in the military or have family who did. Peter Berners, a resident at Andrews of Stratford, served for two years in the British Occupation Zone in Germany after the Second World War. His time in the service left a lasting impression. At age 91 he still proudly wears the poppy every November 11. CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 “It means a lot, to serve your country,” he said. “It’s a good feeling to have served.” Jerry O’Rourke, a resident at our ProTem Memory Care home in Moncton, joined the Royal Canadian Air Force when he was 17 and served for a number of years. Likewise, his father served in the Second World War and survived being onboard a naval ship when it went down in the Atlantic while transporting soldiers to Europe. His years in the service and having grown up with a veteran for a father gave him a unique perspective on Remembrance Day. “I choke up a little bit,” he said. For others, the day is more sombre. Andrews of Summerside resident Doris DeWolfe’s father served in the First World War and her grandmother died during the German occupation of the British island of Jersey during the Second World War. Andrews of Stratford resident Peter Berners served in the British Occupation Zone in Germany after the Second World War.

For her, wearing the poppy on Remembrance Day is a reminder of the horrors of war. “I wear it because I feel it signals that we all want to have peace,” she said. Jane Pearce’s father served in both world wars while her brother served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. Her father was tight-lipped about his time in Europe. The only detail he ever shared with her was that during the First World War he and his fellow soldiers were at one point forced to resort to eating horse meat.

Jane still remembers when her brother left for Europe. Her father was already in the service when her brother was called back up. Her mother arranged for a neighbour to drive the whole family to Wood Islands, where her brother would catch the ferry to Nova Scotia before departing for Europe. He was halfway across the Atlantic Ocean when news broke that the war was over. Jane and her mother were thrilled. “He was just a kid,” said Jane. For Jane, Remembrance Day is filled with mixed emotions. “In my father’s case, I think of what did he go through as a kid, 17 years of age,” she said. “We read things and they were marching and plowing through muck with the one pair of boots and socks, wondering would they ever get back. He did, thank God.” With Remembrance Day on a Saturday this year, Andrews Senior Care and ProTem

Our Above and Beyond winner for October is Harpinder Kaur. Harpinder is a dedicated and caring team member. She’s always willing to do extra to make our residents’ days special. We are fortunate to have her at Andrews of Stratford. Harpinder started working as a caregiver at Andrews approximately one year ago. “Here everyone gives respect to every person,” she said of her experience working at Andrews. “I really like that.” She added in her home-country of India, it’s normal for multiple generations to live in one house. Andrews has become a Canadian version of that for her. “It’s like family,” she said. When she’s not at work, Harpinder enjoys spending time with her husband and their seven-and-a-half year-old son.
