[ director’s corner ] As we head into the end of the 2026 year, we are also approaching my personal 20year Anderson County Library work anniversary! It’s hard to believe this little midwestern girl who moved here to be a reference librarian in 2006 will have been at the library and in the Anderson community for 20 years, but here we are. I’ve certainly seen a lot of changes and a lot of growth in my time here. When I first started, the library seemed much more traditional in its management and usage. In some ways it almost had a university feel and vibe. Since then, we’ve evolved to provide a more open feel. The public library as community center is at the heart of what we do now, and I honestly think that’s a good change. We want everyone to feel like they belong here and that this is a place to make connections and grow. So, for my 20th anniversary, will you get a library card? Or if you have one, encourage someone else get one? Even if you don't identify as a reader, I think the library will surprise you with what we have to offer! Pickleball sets, puzzles, metal detectors, seeds for growing a garden, museum and aquarium passes — all available to borrow at your local library! Come by and I'll be glad to show you how the library has evolved!

celebrating a milestone birthday: the big 200! Back in 1826 Anderson County was officially established, and for the past 200 years has been a beacon of innovation, community, and hope. If you’re looking to celebrate this historic milestone, check out some of the books below, or visit our your local library to learn more about Anderson’s history.

garden

Did you know you can plant seeds in the late fall and winter? Here in Anderson County (hardiness zones 8a and 8b), you can plant things like root vegetables and leafy greens throughout the cold season. If you got carrots, kale, Swiss chard, or turnips from the fall Seed Library, it is not too late to plant them! Winter is also the perfect time to start planning for next year's garden. Here are a few things you can do to set yourself up for success in the spring:

Get your soil tested. Did you know the library has soil testing kits available for checkout? Check your local branch or visit the Anderson Main Library for kits to measure light, moisture, temperature, and pH balance. If you need a more in-depth analysis, the Clemson Extension Office offers low-cost soil testing. Visit clemson.edu/extension to learn more.

Start a garden journal. Garden journals are a great tool to help you stay organized and keep track of what works and doesn't work in your garden. During the winter, you can start making plans for next season's garden by drawing out your garden plots and deciding what you want to plant. Check out the seed library page on our website to see what seeds will be available in the spring seed library, opening February 1st.

Read Books! Use the slower gardening season to learn new things about planting and growing in our area. Here are a few recommendations:

WHAT TO DO NOW... OCTOBER Plant garlic, shallots, onions, carrots, kale, and greens. Harvest the remainder of your summer crops and anything that won't tolerate the frost. Allow your self-pollinating flower heads to fully mature and save their seeds by laying out the flower heads to dry and storing them in a cool, dry, dark place. Mark your calendar for our annual Seed Swap program on January 30! NOVEMBER Get ready for the first frost! Plants like Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, and kale are made sweeter after a frost, so don't start harvesting those just yet. Plant spring-flowering bulbs like crocus, daffodils, and tulips. Get your soil tested and begin to amend your soil as needed. DECEMBER Empty your rain barrels and turn them upside down to protect them from ice. Put a generous layer of mulch around your perennials and winter crops. Start making your spring 2027 garden plan!

OUTREACH AND MOBILE SERVICES As the weather cools down, the Anderson County Library System’s Bookmobile and library staff are staying busy and hitting the road! From October through December, you’ll f ind us across Anderson County at festivals, community events, parades, and other gatherings. You may f ind us bringing the Bookmobile to an event, where you can browse for a new read, get a library card, and chat with our staff. At other gatherings, library staff will be there with an information table, ready to share resources, answer questions, and help you get connected with the library. No matter where you f ind us, we’re excited to meet new faces, reconnect with longtime library users, and bring the library a little closer to you.
