Hello, and happy summer! I hope you had a great first half of the year, and we look forward to seeing you throughout the rest of it. As you can see with this issue we are super excited to be celebrating America 250, a major milestone for our country.
It’s also the 200th anniversary of Anderson – what a great year! We hope you’ll like our patriotic decorations at our locations as we get into the spirit of celebrating.
I’d also like to highlight one of my favorite recurring programs, Books and Community. Every year we choose a topic, give away free copies of the book, and host discussions and events centered on it. This year, as you may have guessed, our topic is America 250, with a focus on the Revolutionary War. We selected three books so readers of all ages can participate, and we’ll offer several programs throughout September. I hope you’ll join us!
Finally, as we celebrate America 250, this is a great time to explore local history. The library offers an excellent collection of local history materials, including old newspapers on microfilm, yearbooks, and many other resources. Best of all, our staff is here to help you make the most of them.

Find what you want to borrow in our online catalog at https://scsl.ent.sirsi.net. From the hottest new releases to your favorite classic, find your next great adventure waiting for you.
Place a hold by clicking the ‘Place Hold’ button, then logging in with your library card number and PIN (hint: your PIN is usually the last 4 digits of your phone number!) Don’t know your PIN? Click ‘Forgot Password’ to reset it.
Choose your pickup library from the drop-down menu, then wait to be notified by email or text message.
Pick up your item from the library within 7 days of your hold notice. Then read, return, and repeat!

Use library resources like HeritageQuest, Ancestry Library, ProQuest Historical Newspapers: South Carolina Collection. Try places like FamilySearch.org, Chronicling America from the Library of Congress, State Department of Archives and History, and universities for their digitized collections. All free.
VISIT IN PERSON
Sometimes you will need to go to a library, historical society, or genealogical society to look through collections in person. Contact the staff as you may need to make an appointment. They also may be able to look up records for you for a fee.

Brassica oleracea
Kale is part of the same veggie family as cabbage, broccoli, collard greens, and Brussels sprouts. You’ll find it in a range of colors - from deep green to purple and even bluish-green. Keep it unwashed in the fridge, and it’ll stay fresh for about five days. Toss it into soups, salads, sandwiches, smoothies, or just about anything that could use a healthy boost.
JULY
Spend the next few months combating ‘peak heat’ and planning the fall garden.
Water deeply, mulch, harvest often, and manage pests/shade in peak heat
Start fall crops indoors (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts)
Direct sow late crops (okra, southern peas, early pumpkins)

Plant fall garden: beans, carrots, beets, turnips, collards, kale

You may be enjoying a slice of watermelon as you read this, but it’s time to plan the fall garden!
Fall gardening gets a bad reputation - like it’s just pumpkins, mums, and calling it a day. But cooler weather is actually one of the best times to grow food. Fewer pests, less watering, and a whole lineup of crops that prefer it chilly.

Did you that it is not only easier to grow native plants, but that they are also better for the environment? Growing plants and grasses that are native to our area helps prevent soil erosion, replenishes soil nutrients, and provides shelter and food for our native insects and animals.
Starting this month, you will be able to get packs of native seed mixes from our seed library! Look for details in our Growing Guide.

OUTREACH AND MOBILE SERVICES
Since hitting the road in March, the Bookmobile has connected with thousands of residents across Anderson County through regular neighborhood stops, school visits, senior living visits, festivals,wellnessfairs,and
communitypartnershipevents.
One of the most rewarding parts of this work has been seeing the excitement from people who may not regularly visit one of ourlibrarybranches.
From first library cards to a rediscovered love of reading, the Bookmobile is helping connect residents with library services in a way that is approachable, flexible, and personal.
At every stop, visitors can browse materials, learn about digital resources like Libby and Hoopla, along with everything else the Anderson County Library System has to offer-whichisalot!
As outreach continues to grow, so does our commitment to expanding stops, strengthening partnerships, and reaching more communities across Anderson County.
We’re proud of what the Bookmobile has accomplished so far, and we’re even more excitedaboutwhereitwilltakeusnext!
