We began the year with an exciting outlook for Spanish golf, and especially for golf in Andalusia. The first few months of the season have confirmed our country’s growing prominence on the international stage, both due to the prominence of our players and the capacity of our courses to host major events. One of the most special moments early this year took place in Marbella, at the Aloha Golf Club, with the celebration of the Legends Tour tournament featuring Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Olazábal, and Montgomery, among others. The event also had a strong emotional component as it served as the setting for Juan Quirós’ farewell to international tournaments, where he received recognition and affection from fans, colleagues, and the tour itself. On the competitive front, the spotlight has been on Jon Rahm, who has once again achieved a title on the LIV tour, this time in Hong Kong, ending a winless streak of more than 500 days. His victory adds even more excitement to the LIV tour, which will return to Real Club Valderrama at the beginning of June. The weather has also marked the start of the year. We went from drought to record rainfall, which has made playing more difficult and has impacted club finances. In any case, the drought decrees will now be a thing of the past. Comenzamos el año con un panorama intenso para el golf español y, muy especialmente, para el andaluz. Los primeros meses de la temporada han confirmado el peso creciente de nuestro país en el panorama internacional, tanto por el protagonismo de nuestros jugadores como por la capacidad de nuestros campos para acoger grandes citas. Uno de los momentos más especiales de este inicio de año se vivió en Marbella, en Aloha Golf Club, con la celebración del torneo del Legends Tour con la participación de Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Olazábal y Montgomery, entre otros. La cita tuvo además un fuerte componente emocional al servir de escenario para la despedida de Juan Quirós de los torneos internacionales quien recibió el reconocimiento y el cariño de aficionados, compañeros y del propio circuito. En el plano competitivo, el protagonismo ha sido para Jon Rahm, que ha vuelto a levantar un título en el circuito LIV, esta vez en Hong Kong, poniendo fin a más de 500 días sin victorias. Su triunfo añade aún más interés a la etapa del LIV que a comienzos de junio volverá al Real Club Valderrama. También el tiempo ha marcado el inicio de año. Pasamos de sequía a records de lluvias, lo que ha dificultado jugar y ha influido en las cuentas de los clubes. En todo caso los decrets de sequía serán historia. El circuito de la revista ha arrancado en este 2026 camino de la Final del 19 de septiembre en La Hacienda Alcaidesa Heathland con cena de gala en el hotel Occidental Puerto Banús y, como no, en el viaje de premio a República Dominicana, en el que se podrá sumar un grupo reducido a los ganadores en la Final y los otros dos del sorteo del viaje de premio. Con este escenario, todo apunta a que la temporada 2026 seguirá ofreciendo grandes momentos para el golf en Andalucía y en toda España.

–Más allá de su responsabilidad profesional, ¿qué significa el golf para usted? ¿Cuánto tiempo le dedica a entrenar y cuánto a jugar en un año normal? –Soy un jugador tardío de golf, empecé con más de 40 años cumplidos, pero como deportista esforzado en mejorar, dedico al menos 1 día a la semana a competir y otro a entrenar. En mis vacaciones también intento que el golf tenga relevancia .Al finalizer el año debo hacer unas 70 rondas de las cuáles la mayoría son torneos o competiciones, incluso compito cada vez que juego con amigos en mi club de Madrid, el Real Club de Golf La Moraleja. dejamos a un lado la agenda institucional, ¿cómo sería 9 –Si su día de golf perfecto? ¿Campo, compañía, competición o

In golf, inspired by our sponsorship –the Spanish Open and the RFEG (Royal Spanish Golf Federation)– we created the first carbon-neutral amateur circuit in 2025. After an audit, we offset our carbon footprint through our sustainability partner, Veolia, by planting forests. In 2026, our Mahou San Miguel Premium Circuit by Gambito Golf will again offset its carbon footprint, and we are working to improve the water footprint on the golf courses as well. your professional responsibilities, what does golf mean 8 Beyond to you? How much time do you dedicate to training and how much to playing in a typical year? I’m a late bloomer in golf; I started after I turned 40. But as an athlete committed to improving, I dedicate at least one day a week to competing and another to training. I also try to make golf a priority during my vacations. By the end of the year, I’ll have played around 70 rounds, most of which are tournaments or competitions. I even compete whenever I play with friends at my club in Madrid, the Real Club de Golf La Moraleja. aside your official duties, what would 9 Leaving your perfect golf day be like? The course, the

company, the competition, or a relaxed round… and, of course, what would you toast with at the end? A perfect day of golf for me is every day, really. Just being able to enjoy this sport outdoors on the wonderful golf courses we have in Spain, in the company of friends, clients or stakeholders with whom I can toast with any of our beers at the end, seems fantastic to me… To be a little more specific; Any event of the San Miguel Andalucía Golf Challenge Circuit on the great courses of the Costa del Sol where it is played and with you all in the company, the Holiday Golf team, is perfect. ■

The 2026 season marks the most significant evolution of the Saudi league since its inception, most notably the abandonment of its original 54-hole format in favor of the traditional 72 holes (4 rounds). Furthermore, the number of players has been expanded to 57 (up from 54 last season), incorporating 5 wild cards who compete independently without belonging to the 13 fixed teams. García remontó el domingo nada menos que siete golpes de desventaja para ganar su primer título individual de LIV Golf en el segundo hoyo de desempate a muerte súbita contra Lahiri, de Crushers GC. Mientras tanto, sus com-

COLUMNA LUMBAR Y SWING

a columna lumbar, esta parte de nuestro cuerpo, a diferencia de lo que muchos creen debe de ser estable, no móvil. Los golfistas que tienen buena estabilidad en la zona lumbar y pélvica, además de ser muy buenos pegadores, tienen menos probabilidades de lesionarse y viceversa. La estabilidad de la parte baja de la columna es uno de los eslabones claves en los jugadores de golf, ya que es una de las zonas en la que más molestias o lesiones se presentan, como ya hemos mencionado. Popularmente se considera al golf como un deporte «poco agresivo», pero no debemos olvidar, como hemos hablado en otras ediciones, de los “posibles riesgos del golf”. Existen muchos factores que pueden influir en el dolor o aparición de una lesión no sólo a nivel lumbar, sino también en otras partes del cuerpo como el hombro, codo o cadera. Las características del propio gesto del swing sobre todo, pero también la cantidad de swings, las vibraciones que se transmiten a lo largo de todo el brazo en cada golpe o transportar la bolsa de los palos durante horas, todo esto puede contribuir a la aparición de dolor o alguna lesión en esta zona de la columna. El movimiento del swing genera en la columna lumbar fuerzas de compresión, de cizallamiento, de torsión y de flexión lateral de forma simultánea o sucesiva, lo cual puede terminar por lastimar principalmente los discos intervertebrales y las facetas de los cuerpos vertebrales, siendo las lesiones más frecuentes las hernias de disco intervertebral y la enfermedad degenerativa discal en el segmento lumbar. El movimiento de rotación repetitivo es el que principalmente genera desgaste en los discos intervertebrales. En la actualidad, sabemos la importancia del entrenamiento físico para paliar dichos efectos y, dentro del mismo, el entrenamiento del CORE, del cual ya hemos hablado en otras ediciones debido a su importancia en el rendimiento y prevención no solo de lesiones a nivel de zona lumbar sino también en otras partes del cuerpo. Para que os hagáis una idea de la relevancia de este complejo, una de sus funciones vitales es la de dar estabilidad a toda la zona lumbopélvica y abdominal, y esto es primordial no solo para el golf sino también para la vida cotidiana. ¡Pero ojo! Cuidado en confundir estabilidad con rigidez. Su función es el control motor en las diferentes posiciones, otorgando una base estable a las articulaciones colindantes y la transmisión de las fuerzas a las extremidades. En el ámbito del entrenamiento físico, hoy en día tenemos muchas alternativas para entrenar el CORE y otorgarle estabilidad a la columna lumbar. No obstante, en el ámbito deportivo aún sigue existiendo bastante controversia de cómo entrenarlo de manera realmente funcional. A continuación veremos algunos ejemplos de cómo trabajar el CORE, pero no olviden la importancia de la valoración para poder prescribir los ejercicios de manera personalizada y así sacarle mayor beneficio al entrenamiento y cuidar mejor nuestra columna. LUMBAR SPINE AND SWING

he lumbar spine, this par t of our body, contrary to popular belief, should be stable, not mobile. Golfers who have good stability in the lumbar and pelvic region, in addition to being very good hitters, are less likely to get injured, and vice versa. Lower spinal stability is one of the key links for golfers, as it is one of the areas where discomfor t or injuries are most common, as we have already mentioned. Golf is popularly considered a “low-impact” spor t, but we must not forget, as we have discussed in previous editions, the “potential risks of golf.” There are many factors that can influence pain or the onset of an injur y, not only in the lumbar region, but also in other par ts of the body such as the shoulder, elbow, or hip. The characteristics of the swing itself, above all, but also the number of swings, the vibrations transmitted along the entire arm with each stroke, or carr ying the bag of clubs for hours, can all contribute to the appearance of pain or injur y in this area of the spine. The swing motion generates compressive, shear, torsional, and lateral flexion forces in the lumbar spine, either simultaneously or successively. This can ultimately damage the inter ver tebral discs and the facet joints of the ver tebral bodies, with the most frequent injuries being herniated discs and degenerative disc disease in the lumbar region. Repetitive rotational movements are the primary cause of wear and tear on the interver tebral discs. We now understand the impor tance of physical training to mitigate these effects, and within this framework, core training, which we have discussed in previous editions, is crucial for performance and injury prevention, not only in the lumbar region but also in other par ts of the body. To give you an idea of the impor tance of this region, one of its vital functions is to provide stability to the entire lumbopelvic and abdominal area, which is essential not only for golf but also for everyday life. But be careful! Don’t confuse stability with rigidity. Its function is motor control in different positions, providing a stable base for the adjacent joints and transmitting forces to the limbs. In the field of physical training today, we have many alternatives for training the core and providing stability to the lumbar spine. However, in the spor ts world, there is still considerable controversy about how to train it in a truly functional way. Below, we will see some examples of how to work the core, but don’t forget the impor tance of assessment in order to prescribe exercises in a personalized way and thus get the most benefit from training and better care for our spine. EJERCICIO 1 HALO MONOPODAL CON KETTLEBELL:: Colócate de pie y en apoyo monopodal (a una pierna). Coge un peso desafiante (medio) y desde allí lleva la pesa hacia atrás alrededor de tu cuerpo; luego cambias de pierna. Este ejercicio es realmente un buen desafío para la estabilidad central y también para el glúteo medio. Consejo, mira a un punto fij: eso te ayudará a mantenerte más estable. • El objetivo de este ejercicio es que mantengas el cuerpo lo más estable posible a pesar de la perturbación que te generará el movimiento del brazo más la carga inercial (kettlebell). • Nota: Si te cuesta a una pierna, empieza con apoyo bipodal (a dos piernas) • 3 series de 8/12 (según nivel) por pierna. EJERCICIO 2 SUPERMAN MÁS REMO EN BANCO (NIVEL MEDIO/AVANZADO): Colócate encima de un banco, primero en posición de cuadrupedia y desde allí pon una pesa o kettlebell encima del mismo entre las manos. Luego cógete con una mano del borde del banco y a continuación extiende una pierna a la altura de la cadera con el talón activo (punta del pie hacia tu pierna). Siente como se activa el glúteo: eso te dará estabilidad sobre todo pélvica. Coge la pesa con control y deja caer el brazo hacia el suelo, mantén los hombros paralelos y las escápulas conectadas (que no se caiga el hombro del lado de la pesa). Realiza un remo (tracción) a la vez que intentas mantener el cuerpo lo más estable posible y vuelve a la posición inicial. Realiza lo mismo al otro lado. • El objetivo de este ejercicio es mantenerte lo más estable posible a pesar de la perturbación que te genera el movimiento del brazo. • Nota: Una progresión de este ejercicio podría ser mover también la pierna, bajarla al extender el brazo y elevarla al hacer el remo. • 3 series de 10/15 (según nivel) por lado.

EXERCISE 1 Single-Legged Kettlebell Halo: Stand on one leg. Grab a challenging (medium) weight and swing it back around your body, then switch legs. This exercise is a great challenge for core stability and the gluteus medius. Tip: Focus on a fixed point; this will help you stay more stable. • The goal of this exercise is to keep your body as stable as possible despite the disturbance caused by the arm movement and the inertial load (kettlebell). • Note: If you find it difficult on one leg, start with a two-legged support. • 3 sets of 8-12 repetitions (depending on your fitness level) per leg. EXERCISE 2 Superman with Bench Row (Intermediate/Advanced): Get on your hands and knees on a bench. Place a weight or kettlebell on the bench between your hands. Then, grab the edge of the bench with one hand and extend one leg to hip height with your heel engaged (toes pointing towards your leg). Feel your glutes activate; this will give you stability, especially in your pelvis. Grip the weight with control and lower your arm towards the floor, keeping your shoulders parallel and your shoulder blades engaged (don’t let the shoulder on the side holding the weight drop). Perform a rowing motion (pull) while trying to keep your body as stable as possible, then return to the starting position. Repeat on the other side. • The goal of this exercise is to maintain maximum stability despite the disturbance caused by the arm movement. • Note: A progression of this exercise could be to also move your leg, lowering it as you extend your arm and raising it as you row. • 3 sets of 10-15 repetitions (depending on your fitness level) per side.

DG GOLF ACADEMY by David Gil DAVID GIL tenía 19 años cuando comenzó a trabajar, en 1998, como profesional de golf en Almenara (Sotogrande), creando la primera academia CAR de Andalucía. Viaja posteriormente a Inglaterra, donde trabajó en la Academia de David Leadbetter. A su vuelta, creó la Escuela de Golf para Juniors de Sotogrande, de donde han salido grandes jugadores profesionales . Siempre en el mundo de la enseñanza , en 2010 se involucró en un proyecto internacional en Sicilia, donde estuvo muy vinculado a los equipos y entranadores nacionales de Italia. Con un Master en Dirección y Gestión en Campos de Golf, David ha trabajado en Operaciones de Golf en los mejores campos de Andalucía, hasta que en 2018 se incorpora al proyecto de Villa Padierna Golf Academy by Michael Campbell. En 2021, David decide crear su propia academia de golf, DG GOLF ACADEMY, con base en Marbella y recientemente en Suiza. En la actualidad, David es profesional del Club de Golf La Cañada, en Sotogrande.

THE SHORT GAME

Tras estas semanas de parón motivadas por las lluvias, he podido notar en la gran mayoría de mis alumnos que la parte que más les ha afectado en el juego ha sido con gran diferencia es el juego corto. Las sensaciones, el feeling, control de distancias y prácticamente todo lo relacionado en este apartado del juego. Es por ello que durante varios números-artículos me gustaría enfocarme en estos aspectos, comenzando con una clase desde el búnker. Este artículo del bunker explica la técnica desglosando: alineación, postura, grip y swing. Para que no mezcléis los conceptos y tengáis claro cada uno de ellos, posteriormente haremos otro articulo sobre juego corto alrededor de green y otro más de putt, con ejercicios que usamos para la escuela de adultos y otros que solemos usar para pequeños golfistas, incluyendo juegos mas divertidos. Espero que esta clase os sea de utilidad para mejorar vuestro juego y mando un saludo a todos los golfistas.

Feel, control of distances, and practically everything related to this aspect of the game. That’s why, over several ar ticles, I’d like to focus on these aspects, star ting with a lesson from the bunker. This bunker ar ticle explains the technique by breaking it down: alignment, stance, green, and swing. To avoid confusion and ensure you understand each concept clearly, we’ll publish another ar ticle later on the shor t game around the green and another on putting, with exercises we use for adult golf and others we typically use for young golfers, including some more fun games. TRABAJA LOS 3 GOLPES DEL BUNKER DE GREEN MAS COMUNES En esta clase vamos a trabajar los tres golpes mas comunes desde el obstáculo de arena que seguro os ayudaran a mejorar vuestros resultados. Los tres golpes que vamos a trabajar son los siguientes. 1.- El golpe NEUTRO Este es un golpe básico desde el bunker, con un grado de dificultad bajo , ya que seria cuando el talud del bunker no es alto y la bandera se encuentra a una distancia media del green. 2.- El golpe FLOP O ALTO Este es un golpe algo mas complicado, el grado de dificultad es algo más alto ya que lo usaremos cuando trabajemos con taludes más altos o con banderas más cercana al obstáculo con poco espacio para parar la bola en el green. 3.- El golpe LARGO al green. Este es un golpe al que muchos jugadores le suelen temer algo más, ya que en muchos casos forzamos mucho más el swing para llegar a la bandera, generando muchos errores. ➠

WORK ON THE THREE MOST COMMON GREEN BUNKER SHOTS In this lesson, we’ll work on the three most common shots from the sand hazard, which will surely help you improve your scores. The three shots we’ll work on are the following: 1. The NEUTRAL Shot This is a basic shot from the bunker, with a low degree of difficulty, as it’s used when the bunker slope isn’t high and the flagstick is at a medium distance from the green. 2. The FLOP or High Shot This is a slightly more complicated shot, with a higher degree of difficulty, as we’ll use it when working with higher slopes or flagsticks closer to the hazard with little space to stop the ball on the green. 3. The LONG Shot to the Green This is a shot that many players tend to fear more, as in many cases we force the swing much more to reach the flagstick, generating many mistakes. ➠ 75

GOLPE 1: EL GOLPE NEUTRO DESDE EL BUNKER ALINEACIÓN En este golpe vamos a colocarnos en la bola con un stance bastante neutro. No tendremos que hacer nada especial ni diferente a como nos colocaríamos en un golpe de la misma distancia en la calle, en lo que se refiere a la alineación del cuerpo. POSTURA En este apartado, sí es cierto que necesitaremos una postura solida, con los pies separados e igualados a la distancia de hombros. La bola la colocaremos al pie izquierdo y asentaremos los pies en la arena para que nos dé un stance bien asentado. GRIP Y CARA DEL PALO Usaremos un grip neutro, ya que no cambiaremos el ángulo de la cara del palo en ningún momento. El palo correcto para estos golpes sería un 54 o un 56 grados. SWING Olvida hacer un swing vertical, atacando la bola contra el suelo. El swing debe de ser con buena rotación y tratar de sacar la arena que tenemos en un radio de 5 centímetros de la bola fuera del bunker.

SHOT 1: THE NEUTRAL SHOT FROM THE BUNKER ALIGNMENT For this shot, we’ll position ourselves at the ball with a fairly neutral stance. We won’t need to do anything special or different than how we would position ourselves for a shot of the same distance from the fairway, in terms of body alignment. POSTURE In this section, it’s true that we’ll need a solid stance, with our feet shoulder-width apart. We’ll place the ball at our left foot and plant our feet firmly in the sand to give us a wellgrounded stance. GRIP AND CLUBFACE We’ll use a neutral grip, since we won’t be changing the clubface angle at any point. The correct club for these shots would be a 54 or 56 degree. SWING Forget about taking a vertical swing, attacking the ball against the ground. The swing should have good rotation and try to get the sand we have within a 5-centimeter radius of the ball out of the bunker.

GOLPE 2: EL FLOP O GOLPE POR ALTO ALINEACIÓN En este apartado he de decir que no soy muy partidario de enseñar a hacer estos golpes con un stance o alineación muy abierta (apuntar con el cuerpo a la izquierda del objetivo), ya que a día de hoy existen palos que te dan un loft bastante abierto y no hay necesidad de generar posturas incómodas. En el caso de que no contemos con un palo muy abierto, vamos a intentar abrir el palo girando la varilla del mismo pero no modificándolo con el grip. POSTURA En este caso, la postura no será neutra, ya que siempre que se abre el palo las manos tendrán que bajar, acercándose más a las rodillas, y es por ello que la parte superior de nuestro cuerpo tendrá que inclinarse ligeramente. La bola estará ligeramente al pie izquierdo, los pies algo más separados que los hombros y, como en el golpe anterior, asentaremos bien los pies en la arena para que nos dé estabilidad en el swing.

GRIP Y CARA DEL PALO Si tenemos un Low Wedge , de 58 grados o mas, no necesitaremos modificar nada en absoluto de grip ni cara del palo. En el caso que no tengamos este tipo de palo, podréis girar la varilla para darle loft a la cara pero no modificando el grip. Siempre como veréis es aconsejable tener un low wedge entre vuestros palos de 58 o 60 grados. SWING: En este apartado, he de deciros que lo mas importante durante vuestro swing es que la cara de vuestro palo se mantenga siempre abierta, lo que solemos llamar el Face to Face, mantener la cara de vuestro palo siempre apuntado o frente a vuestra cara en la subida, el impacto y el final de vuestro golpe. En este golpe, mantener las manos relajadas y al igual que en golpe neutro es importante sacar la arena que está alrededor de la bola fuera del bunker, en el impacto tratar de no bloquear las manos , ya que bloqueándolas será muy común cometer errores.

SHOT 2: THE FLOP OR HIGH LOFT ALIGNMENT In this section, I must say that I’m not a big fan of teaching these shots with a very open stance or alignment (pointing the body to the left of the target), since nowadays there are clubs that provide a fairly open loft, and there’s no need to create uncomfortable positions. If we don’t have a very open club, we’ll try to open the club by rotating the shaft, but without modifying the grip. POSTURE In this case, the stance won’t be neutral, since whenever the club is opened, the hands will have to drop, getting closer to the knees, and that’s why the upper part of our body will have to lean slightly forward. GOLPE 3: EL GOLPE LARGO A GREEN ALINEACIÓN Volveremos a tener una alineación neutra, muy parecida a la que podamos tener fuera del bunker. Vamos a cuadrarnos con el palo y el cuerpo al objetivo. POSTURA Para este golpe la postura tendrá que ser con la parte superior del cuerpo no muy inclinada. Esta es una de las diferencias entre este golpe y los dos anteriores, ya que no tendremos que sacar mucha arena y la bola tendrá que hacer más distancia en su vuelo. En el stance-postura, colocaremos la bola algo más centrada, y la separación de los pies puede ser la de los hombros o incluso algo inferior. GRIP Y CARA DEL PALO En todos los sentidos este golpe se parece a un golpe de calle, y en muchos casos este es el error de muchos jugadores, porque lo suelen asimilar a cualquiera de los dos golpes que he explicado antes, pero la realidad es que es más como un golpe corte sobre hierba. El palo que tenéis que elegir será más entre un PW y un 52 grados. SWING La postura algo más erguida nos ayudara a poder mover el palos algo más flat para no golpear muy por debajo de la bola. También será muy importante girar y desgirar bien nuestro cuerpo, sin parar ni bloquear el cuerpo al golpear, las manos siempre relajadas y fluir a través de la bola.

SHOT 3: THE LONG SHOT TO THE GREEN ALIGNMENT We’ll return to a neutral alignment, very similar to what we might have outside the bunker. We’ll align our club and body with the target. POSTURE For this shot, the stance should be with the upper body not too far forward. This is one of the differences between this shot and the previous two, as we won’t have to remove much sand, and the ball will have to travel further. In the stance, we’ll position the ball slightly more centered, and the distance between our feet can be shoulder-width or even slightly less. “EL GOLF ME LO HA DADO TODO; LA VIDA ME LA HA DADO EL GOLF” El Staysure Marbella Legends no solo marcaba el inicio del calendario internacional, sino que fue escenario de un momento especialmente emotivo para el golf español: tras más de cuatro décadas de trayectoria profesional, el gaditano Juan Quirós disputaba en Marbella el último torneo internacional de su carrera, poniendo el broche final a una vida dedicada a la competición al más alto nivel. Con más de 40 años en el circuito y cuatro victorias en el Legends Tour —Bad Ragaz Seniors Open (2006), Open de France Senior (2007), Irish Seniors Open (2008) y Cannes Mougins Masters (2011)—, Quirós se despedía del golf profesional internacional en un escenario muy especial: Andalucía, su tierra, rodeado de compañeros, familia, amigos y aficionados que han seguido su trayectoria durante décadas.

Carismático, competitivo y con un carácter que nunca ha dejado indiferente a nadie, Quirós ha sido uno de los jugadores más emblemáticos del golf español en el circuito senior. “GOLF HAS GIVEN ME EVERYTHING; GOLF HAS GIVEN ME LIFE” The Staysure Marbella Legends not only marked the start of the international calendar, but also served as the stage for a particularly emotional moment for Spanish golf: after more than four decades as a professional, Juan Quirós, from Cádiz, played the last international tournament of his career in Marbella, bringing to a close a life dedicated to competition at the highest level. With more than 40 years on the circuit and four victories on the Legends Tour—the Bad Ragaz Seniors Open (2006), the Open de France Senior (2007), the Irish Seniors Open (2008), and the Cannes Mougins Masters (2011)—Quirós bid farewell to international professional golf in a very special setting: Andalusia, his homeland, surrounded by colleagues, family, friends, and fans who have followed his career for decades.

Charismatic, competitive, and with a personality that never failed to captivate, Quirós has been one of the most emblematic Spanish golfers on the senior circuit. His farewell made this edition of the Staysure Marbella Legends a tournament brimming with symbolism and emotion. Happy and sad at the same time… I’m happy and sad at the same time. ➠ Mientras me divierta y me encuentre bien, seguiré jugando lo que pueda aquí. Pero en Europa, en el circuito internacional… ahí sí que se acabó. –Primeros recuerdos en el Tour –El primero grande fue cuando fui a la Escuela en La Manga. Yo tendría 18 o 19 años. Me fui en autobús, sin carnet de conducir, sin autovías, sin nada. Aquello fue una odisea. Paradas infinitas… un viaje durísimo y agotador. Pero saqué la carta y ahí empezó todo. Antes ya había hecho otro viaje tremendo a Santander para jugar el Sub-25 de España. Salimos en tren desde Algeciras por la tarde, llegamos a Madrid a la mañana siguiente, todo el día esperando otro tren… y al día siguiente amanecíamos en Pedreña. Aquello era otra época. –Desde los 11 años dedicado al golf –Con 11 años empecé a trabajar de caddie en Sotogrande. Éramos 11 hermanos. Mi padre trabajaba allí y yo me metí para poder ayudar en casa. Nos daban 50 pesetas por hacer de caddie. Si mi hermano y yo llevábamos 100 pesetas a casa, aquello era una alegría enorme. Por las noches íbamos al colegio en el propio campo de golf y por la tarde un maestro del pueblo me daba clases gratis. Nunca lo olvidaré. –¿Cuándo decides que el golf es lo tuyo? –Yo jugaba al fútbol y me encantaba. Pero me rompí la clavícula con 12 años, estuve escayolado un montón de tiempo y claro, sin poder traer dinerillo a casa, así que mi padre me dijo: “Se acabó el fútbol”. Y ahí empecé a tomármelo en serio. Con 13 años dije: “No hay un deporte como este”. Y me picó el gusanillo. Empecé jugando los torneos de caddies, los de los hoyos cortos y por un golpe no me clasifiqué para jugar el recorrido largo; me dolió muchísimo, pero eso me dio más fuerza todavía. Al año siguiente lo conseguí. Y ya no paré. –¿Cómo fueron los primeros años viajando por el mundo? –Duros. Muy duros. Sin saber inglés, viajando solo, comiendo fatal… En Inglaterra lo pasé mal con la comida, fatal. Pero aprendes. Aprendes de todo. Recuerdo una previa de la previa del Open Británico en Southport a la que fui gracias a la ayuda de unos señores. De ahí fui a la previa. 98

Pasé el corte y me fui a cenar solo, y me encontré con Seve. “Juanito, ¿qué haces aquí?”, me dijo; “Pues que he pasado la previa”, “Pues vente conmigo”, y ahí estuvimos cenando los dos. Seve era un fenómeno, toda la familia Ballesteros me trató siempre con

Cuando estuve en Valderrama Tony Jacklin y Dan Brown apostaron mucho por mi, me consiguieron patrocinadores, un sueldo para mi mujer… me dieron la estabilidad. Un día jugué con Tony una exhibición. Llegamos empatados al último hoyo y yo tenía un putt para ganarle. En mi cabeza no podía ganar a un hombre tan grande, pensé: “No puedo meterlo”. Y no lo metí. Se rió y me dijo: “No me engañas, lo has fallado aposta”. Tenía razón. –También viviste momentos muy duros… –Claro que hubo momentos duros en la competición, pero lo más duro fue cuando nació mi hijo; nació fenomenal, me fui a celebrarlo y cuando llegué a casa me llamaron del hospital, se puso gravísimo. No sabíamos que era hemofílico. Yo me iba a jugar torneos fuera durante semanas pero mi cabeza estaba en casa. Muchas noches solo, pensando. Seguí jugando, pero no rendí todo lo que podía haber dado. ➠

First memories on the Tour The first big one was when I went to Golf School in La Manga. I was 18 or 19 years old. I went by bus, without a driver’s license, without highways, without anything. It was an odyssey. Endless stops… a grueling and exhausting journey. But I got the letter, and that’s where it all began. Before that, I had already made another incredible trip to Santander to play in the Spanish Under-25 Championship. We left Algeciras by train in the afternoon, arrived in Madrid the next morning, spent the whole day waiting for another train… and the following morning we woke up in Pedreña.Those were different times. Dedicated to golf since age 11 When I was 11, I started working as a caddie in Sotogrande.There were 11 of us siblings. My father worked there, and I got

the job to help out at home. We were paid 50 pesetas for caddying. If my brother and I brought home 100 pesetas, it was a huge joy. At night we went to school right on the golf course, and in the afternoons a local teacher gave me free lessons. I’ll never forget it. When did you decide golf was for you? I used to play soccer and I loved it. But I broke my collarbone when I was 12, I was in a cast for ages, and of course, I couldn’t bring any money home, so my dad told me, “That’s it for soccer.” And that’s when I started taking it seriously. When I was 13, I said, “There’s no sport like this.” And I got hooked. I started playing in caddie tournaments, the short course ones, and I missed qualifying for the long course by one stroke; it hurt a lot, but it made me even stronger.The following year I made it. And I never stopped. What were the first few years like traveling the world? Tough.Very tough. Not knowing English, traveling alone, eating terribly… I had a terrible time with the food in England, a terrible time.

But you learn.You learn everything. I remember a qualifying round for the British Open in Southport, which I got to thanks to the help of

Some of the first people who helped me were the members of Sotogrande. John Medina helped me a lot, and several members supported me. When I was at Valderrama,Tony Jacklin and Dan Brown really believed in me. They got me sponsors, a salary for my wife… they gave me stability. One day I played an exhibition with Tony. En aquella época a ninguno, yo ahora sí que voy. Tienen otra mentalidad, se lo toman con otra filosofía, y eso es bueno. Pero siempre les digo lo mismo: que estudien. Cuanto más trabajo le eches, mejor, pero hay que tener una base. Este deporte es muy duro y no todos llegan. Hay talento en España, muchísimo. Pero hay que trabajar y tener la cabeza bien puesta. Ángel Ayora es uno de ellos. Le conozco bien y tiene un futuro impresionante, no voy a descubrirlo yo, lo tiene. Le ha echado unos pantalones, a mí a su edad me ofrecen el LIV sabiendo que con ese dinero tengo para el resto de mi vida, sin saber lo que voy a hacer en el 100

mundo del golf, lo que ha hecho Ayora es para tenerlos bien amarráos, o muchísima confianza en él, que la tiene. Es un jugador buenísimo, tiene mucha cabeza y va a llegar muy muy lejos. Nos va a dar muy buenos momentos. ¿Por qué decides que el Staysure Marbella Legends sea tu último torneo internacional? Voy a cumplir 70 años. Creo que es momento de dejar paso a los jóvenes, la gente llega al Legends super fuerte, y no es solo que le peguen 50 metros más, que también. Es que he viajado toda la vida, he cogido aviones sin gustarme, he estado lejos de casa semanas enteras. Ahora quiero disfrutar de mi familia y dedicarles todo el tiempo que no he podido dedicarles con mis viajes. Si no estuviese en casa, no me importaría nada despedirme en Bad Ragaz, donde gané mi primer torneo del que tengo maravillosos recuerdos. Pero despedirme en casa, en Andalucía, es maravilloso. El golf me lo ha dado todo. Todo. Aprendizaje, amigos, carácter, estabilidad. Lo poco o mucho que tengo me lo ha dado el golf. Y no puedo agradecer más al DP World Tour y al Legends Tour por tantos años maravillosos. La vida me la ha dado el golf. Y gracias al golf, he sido feliz. Un centenar de niños aprenden con Juan Quirós y Santi Luna Niños de todas las escuelas de Málaga han venido a un clinic impartido en Aloha Golf por Juan Quirós y Santi Luna, en el que han aprendido diferentes golpes, han recibido consejos de estos grandes jugadores y han pasado una tarde de risas con el gaditano y el madrileño, dos de los protagonistas del Staysure Marbella Legends. ■

was when my son was born; he was born perfectly healthy, I went out to celebrate, and when I got home they called me from the hospital. He became very ill. We didn’t know he was a hemophiliac. I would go away to play tournaments for weeks at a time, but my mind was at home. Many nights alone, thinking. I kept playing, but I didn’t perform to my full potential. That leaves a mark on you. It makes you stronger, but it leaves a mark. What was the atmosphere like among the Spanish players? We were a tight-knit group. Whoever won, they would treat everyone to dinner. I continued doing that in the Senior category. I won four times and always treated my teammates.There was real camaraderie. It was Manolo Cabrera who gave me the nickname “the German.”They were wonderful years. Ayora has a bright future. I see today’s young players as more professional, with more resources, and better

physical conditioning.The circumstances are very different. What gym would we have gone to back then? None, but I do go now.They have a different mentality, they approach it with a different philosophy, and that’s a good thing. But I always tell them the same thing: study.The more work you put in, the better, but you have to have a foundation.This sport is very tough, and not everyone makes it. There’s a lot of talent in Spain. But you have to work hard and keep your head on straight. Ángel Ayora is one of them. I know him well, and he has an amazing future. I’m not going to be the one to discover that; he has it. He’s really shown some nerve. If I were his age and they offered me the LIV knowing that with that money I’d be set for the rest of my life, without knowing what I’d do in the world of golf, what Ayora has done is enough to make you think twice, or to give him a lot of confidence, which he certainly has. He’s a fantastic player, very level-headed, and he’s going to go very, very far. He’s going to give us some great moments. Why did you decide that the Staysure

Marbella Legends would be your last international tournament? I’m turning 70. I think it’s time to make way for the younger generation. People are arriving at the Legends Tour incredibly strong, and it’s

able to give them because of my travels. If I weren’t home, I wouldn’t mind saying goodbye at Bad Ragaz, where I won my first tournament, which I have wonderful memories of. But saying goodbye at home, in Andalusia, is wonderful. Golf has given me everything. Everything. Learning, friends, character, stability. Whatever little or much I have, golf has given me. And I can’t thank the DP World Tour and the Legends Tour enough for so many wonderful years. Golf has given me life. And thanks to golf, I’ve been happy. A hundred children learn with Juan Quirós and Santi Luna Children from all the schools in Malaga have come to a clinic given at Aloha Golf by Juan Quirós and Santi Luna, in which they have learned different shots, received advice from these great players and spent an afternoon laughing with the man from Cadiz and the man from Madrid, two of the protagonists of the Staysure Marbella Legends. ■ 101

LA MUÑECA EN EL GOLF

ola golfistas. ¿A quién no le ha dolido una o ambas muñecas al practicar o después de jugar al golf? Lamentablemente son unas articulaciones muy estresadas durante el juego a causa de los continuos impactos y a veces, debido a una técnica pobre. Las mujeres suelen sufrir más que los hombres por debilidad anatómica. Veámoslo más en detalle… Nuestras manos se diferencian de las del resto de animales por tener el pulgar opuesto a los otros dedos, lo que permite el gesto de la prensión (o pinza). El pulgar es el dedo más complejo de la mano; para moverlo, se utilizan 9 músculos y 3 nervios mayores. La mano de los seres humanos tiene bien 25 articulaciones y 31 huesos y permiten la realización de 58 movimientos diferentes y la articulación de la muñeca es una de las más complejas de la anatomía humana. - Los esguinces de muñeca suponen el 15% de las lesiones deportivas. ¡Así que menudo instrumento nos han regalado! Los traumas agudos suelen ser golpes contra el duelo, la esterilla, raíces o cuerpo extraños; además pueden ocurrir esguinces por gestos demasiados rápidos y poco controlados. En esas situaciones hay que poner rápidamente hielo, descansar y eventualmente aplicar un vendaje de movilización o compresivo si hay edema. Si el dolor es mu elevad, aconsejo tomar la medicación adecuada para calmarlo. Si el dolor persiste o hay signo evidente de trauma grave, acudir a un profesional. Los traumas crónicos suelen ser debido al sobreuso (trauma por estrés o desgaste) o la edad (artrosis, osteoporosis, artritis etc.). En estas situaciones aconsejo sin dudas hacer una radiografía o una resonancia y confiar en un profesional de la rehabilitación. Ayudan mucho pulseras y muñequeras que se pueden encontrar en las farmacias para movilizar la zona dolorida; además hay grips específicos para manos con dolores crónicos. Desde un punto de vista preventivo, aconsejo calentar bien antes de jugar o practicar (empezar con palos cortos, juego corto, powerball o pelota anti estrés) y estirar al final. El grip es la clave para cuidar de nuestras muñecas, así que comentar inmediatamente a vuestro instructor ➠

Unfortunately, these joints are under a lot of stress during the game due to the continuous impacts and sometimes, poor technique. Women tend to suffer more than men due to anatomical weakness. Let’s look at it in more detail… Our hands differ from those of other animals because we have an opposable thumb, which allows us to grasp (or pinch). The thumb is the most complex finger on the hand; to move it, 9 muscles and 3 major nerves are used. The human hand has 25 joints and 31 bones, allowing for 58 different movements, and the wrist joint is one of the most complex in human anatomy. Wrist sprains account for 15% of sports injuries. So what a gift we have! Acute traumas are usually caused by impacts against the ground, the mat, roots, or foreign objects; sprains can also occur from overly quick and poorly controlled movements. In these situations, ice should be applied quickly, rest is recommended, and a mobilization or compression bandage should be applied if there is swelling. If the pain is very intense, I advise taking appropriate medication to alleviate it. If the pain persists or there are clear signs of serious trauma, consult a professional. Chronic traumas are usually due to overuse (stress or wear-andtear injuries) or age (osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, arthritis, etc.). l 2025 quedará marcado como uno de los años más exitosos para el golf andaluz en los Campeonatos de España Interautonómicos. Andalucía se proclamó campeona de España Interautonómica Absoluta Masculina, demostrando solidez y carácter en las eliminatorias decisivas, y añadió a su palmarés la victoria en el Interautonómico Sub-18 Masculino, confirmando el enorme nivel de su cantera. A estos títulos se sumó el triunfo en el Campeonato de España Interautonómico Infantil, reflejo del excelente trabajo formativo que se desarrolla desde las categorías de base. En la categoría femenina, el equipo andaluz se llevó el subcampeonato del Interautonómico Absoluto Femenino. El golf andaluz sigue demostrando su excelente salud y proyección en el panorama juvenil nacional tras el desarrollo de los Puntuables Nacionales Juveniles 2026 en Salamanca. En la categoría masculina, el andaluz Oliver de Wint dominó con autoridad en el campo de Zarapi-

cos y se proclamó campeón con una amplia renta sobre sus rivales, acompañado también por destacados puestos de otros jugadores andaluces como Joaquín Beltrán y Martín Cervera, que confirmaron el fuerte nivel de nuestra cantera. Y en la categoría femenina, Chanya Huaysan llevó a Andalucía a lo más alto en Villamayor al imponerse en un vibrante play-off, logrando así una merecida victoria después de tres días de gran golf. En el último fin de semana de competición internacional, los andaluces Ángel Ayora y Julia López brillaron con actuaciones muy destacadas en los circuitos profesionales globales. Ayora logró un sólido top-10 (noveno) en el Investec South African Open Championship del DP World Tour, cerrando la semana con -7 tras varias rondas bajo par y mostrando su progresión y regularidad entre los mejores del circuito europeo. Ayora achieved a solid top-10 finish (ninth) at the Investec South African Open Championship on the DP World Tour, closing the week at -7 after several rounds under par and demonstrating his continued progress and consistency among the best on the European Tour. For her par t, Julia López also secured a top-10 finish (tenth place) at the LPGA Tour’s HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore, ending the tournament at -6 and achieving one of her best results of the season, with a key round of 66 strokes that allowed her to climb the leaderboard. IEC is the most affordable, productive and enjoyable golf tourism trade event in Europe and is set to attract a record 900 delegates in 2026. IEC is open to IAGTO member golf tour operators, golf tourism suppliers, golf destinations and service providers from across Europe, Africa and the Gulf States. Buyer delegates are fully accredited IAGTO members from outbound golf travel markets worldwide, all selling European golf destinations. Approximately 50% of attending buyers come from the top 22% highest producers in their respective markets. The convention comprises two days of meetings, all of which are prescheduled at the delegates’ request. The venue is the fantastic FYCMA Exhibition Centrewhich will be familiar to everyone who attended IEC 2024.
