Algo más que un circuito de golf

A finales de septiembre, con la Gran Final celebrada en San Roque Golf & Resort y una cena de gala para todos los finalistas y acompañantes en el Hotel Occidental Puerto Banús terminó la XV edición del circuito San Miguel Andalucía Golf Challenge by Globalia, Costa del Sol. La próxima edición de 2026 comenzará los primeros meses de ese año, y de nuevo se jugará en veinticinco de los mejores campos de Andalucía a los que se añaden dos pruebas más en Madrid y Mallorca. Más de 2.300 jugadores de 25 nacionalidades han participado este año en este circuito que se ha convertido en un clásico esperado por los aficionados al golf de toda España y el resto de Europa.

Cada año, cuando arranca el San Miguel Andalucía Golf Challenge by Globalia, Costa del Sol, algo palpita en el corazón de los forofos de este deporte. No se trata solo de golf, es algo más : es un rito deportivo, social y cultural que recorre las provincias andaluzas, congrega apasionados amateur, activa economías locales y ofrece recorridos que son autenticas joyas. Desde Finca Cortesín hasta San Roque, desde La Cañada hasta Valderrama, pasando por Las Brisas, el RC Sevilla Golf, Novo Sancti Petri, etc., este circuito nos hace sentir el golf que es -también- parte de lo nuestro, de nuestra forma de entender y estar en la vida.

El San Miguel Andalucía Golf Challenge by Globalia, Costa del Sol no solo brinda momentos de juego sino también de convivencia: las entregas de premio, los cócteles, los encuentros al caer la tarde tras una ronda de golf, el clima de respeto a los campos y de camaradería entre los jugadores... Ser amateur no puede significar estar al margen de aspirar a disfrutar y medirse con grandes recorridos, en condiciones de primer nivel. Y esto esencialmente es lo que ofrece este circuito. At the end of September, the 15th edition of the San Miguel Andalucía Golf Challenge by Globalia, Costa del Sol circuit concluded with the Grand Final held at San Roque Golf & Resort and a gala dinner for all finalists and their guests at the Occidental Puerto Banús Hotel. The next edition, in 2026, will begin in early 2026 and will once again be played on twenty-five of Andalusia’s best courses, with two more events in Madrid and Mallorca. “Cuando conocí a Jon a la edad de 17 años, supe que el mundo del golf estaba a punto de presenciar el nacimiento de una nueva estrella”, declaró en diciembre de 2023 el entonces comisionado y director ejecutivo de LIV Golf, Greg Norman, cuando presentó públicamente el fichaje de Jon Rahm por la liga saudí.

El abandono del PGA Tour por parte de Rahm, en aquellos momentos número 3 del mundo, tuvo un aliciente al que era muy difícil sustraerse: un contrato por 525 millones de dólares.

A esa descomunal cifra, el vasco ha ido sumando una buena cantidad de millones a lo largo de las dos temporadas que ha completado en LIV Golf. Su penúltimo gran pellizco no ha sido precisamente pequeño: 18 millones de dólares por proclamarse campeón individual del circuito de este año. A eso hay que sumarle otros 1,4 millones por haber conquistado una semana después el título por equipos con Legion XIII.

En total se ha embolsado en premios casi 35 millones esta temporada, a los que hay sumar una cantidad similar que obtuvo por sus resultados en 2024, cuando también fue campeón individual. Y todo ello con únicamente dos victorias, ambas en

Rahm’s departure from the PGA Tour, at the time ranked number 3 in the world, had an incentive that was very difficult to resist: a contract worth $525 million.

To that enormous figure, the Basque player has been adding a good amount of millions over the course of his two seasons with LIV Golf. His penultimate big payday hasn’t exactly been small: $18 million for being crowned individual champion of this year’s tour. Add to that another $1.4 million for winning the team title with Legion XIII a week later.

In total, he has pocketed nearly $35 million in prize money this season, to which must be added a similar amount he earned for his results in 2024, when he was also the individual champion. And all this with only two victories, both in 2024, in the 26 tournaments he has played in the last two years in the LIV,

According to the data collected, an average swing on the PGA Tour lasts 0.75 s for the backswing and 0.25 s for the downswing.

However, RFD and strength are often related. If an athlete cannot produce high levels of force from the outset (strength), it is very unlikely that they will be able to produce high levels of force quickly (RFD). Strength is equivalent to the maximum speed of a race car, and RFD is equivalent to the speed at which it goes from 0 to 60 mph.

EXERCISES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

Ideally, each training session should include RFD exercises and strength development or maintenance exercises throughout the year. Most golf seasons are very long, and these qualities can quickly decline if they are not trained. The good news is that they can be maintained with a fairly low training volume. In addition, if organized properly, it will have a positive effect on injury prevention and fatigue management. Having better-conditioned muscles undoubtedly allows for faster recovery, which is vital for the competitive golfer trying to maintain a high volume of play and practice.

On the other hand, the golf swing is basically a form of RFD training in itself.

To give a practical example of the difference between strength training and RFD training, think of a weighted squat (strength) and a squat jump (RFD) using only your body weight. And why squats? Because the squat movement pattern is excellent for golfers to develop high levels of strength and RFD, as it transfers excellently to the ability to drive force into the ground during the swing. As we know, this is an important element in achieving high club head speeds.

To train “strength” in squats, we would use a load that only allows you to perform a low number of repetitions (less ➠

Aumentar la cantidad total de fuerza que puedes producir en un movimiento a través del entrenamiento de fuerza y la velocidad a la que puedes producir fuerza a través del entrenamiento RFD es una excelente manera de desarrollar las cualidades físicas que permiten velocidades más rápidas de la cabeza del palo.

A GREATER EFFECT ON FORCE PRODUCTION

In contrast, when training the same movement for “RFD,” think of the squat jump using only your body weight as mentioned above. By doing a squat and trying to propel your body weight as high as possible, you achieve much higher movement speeds, but you don’t generate as much force on the ground as you do in the weighted squat. This makes jump training have a greater effect on force production at high speeds, as opposed to total force, as in strength training.

Increasing the total amount of force you can produce in a movement through strength training and the speed at which you can produce force through RFD training is an excellent way to develop the physical qualities that enable faster clubhead speeds.

In addition to using jumps to improve RFD, there are also many different variations of medicine ball throwing movements to develop rotational power.

360 SQUAT: Get into a half-squat position with both arms extended to one side. Push off with the intention of jumping 360 degrees. As the jump lands, both arms move to the other side to initiate the next jump and return to the starting position.

DAVID GIL tenía 19 años cuando comenzó a trabajar, en 1998, como profesional de golf en Almenara (Sotogrande), creando la primera academia CAR de Andalucía. 1. EL GRIP

El grip es uno de los factores más importante en un swing de golf. Siempre digo que seria muy difícil encontrar grandes jugadores con mal grip, pero en este número quiero enseñaros una rutina que sobre todo a los jugadores de handicaps altos os facilitará colocaros en la bola con el grip correcto. Para ello habría que hacer tres pasos que a continuación paso a explicar. (Jugadores diestros).

LA MANO IZQUIERDA

Es algo muy común que los jugadores menos experimentados sujeten el palo con mucha presión. Es cierto que es algo que los profesores ya contamos con ello y que tratamos de ir cambiándolo a medida que el jugador se va relajando, pero lo que sí es importante es

These are the points we will cover in this class. As always, I will explain and illustrate each one with photos so that you can practice them and put them into action when you go out on the golf course.

1. THE GRIP

The grip is one of the most important factors in a golf swing. I always say that it would be very difficult to find great players with a bad grip, but in this issue I want to teach you a routine that will help you, especially high-handicap players, to position yourself on the ball with the correct grip. To do this, you need to follow three steps, which I will explain below. (Right-handed players).

THE LEFT HAND

It is very common for less experienced players to hold the club with too much pressure. It is true that we instructors already know this and try to change it as the player relaxes, but what is important is to understand that the club

LA MANO DERECHA

Como consejo, antes de colocar la mano en el palo, abrirla y que la palma apunte al objetivo. Sin modificar la posición, acoplarla al grip, siempre en la superficie de los dedos. Luego, montar la palma, tapando el pulgar de la mano izquierda y con la V nuevamente apuntando al hombro derecho.

2. LA COLOCACIÓN EN LA BOLA

Incorrecto: Al colocar la bola muy a la izquierda será fácil cruzar el stance

En muchas ocasiones tratamos errores de colocación en jugadores de handicaps altos porque necesitan tener o mecanizar una colocación neutra que les dé seguridad, consistencia y que puedan usar en porcentajes muy altos de sus golpes en el campo. La idea al principio es crearles un movimiento-efecto en la bola que dentro de sus posibilidades puedan controlar. Los jugadores de handicaps bajos necesitan aprender a mover la bola, crear efectos y es por ello que necesitan trabajar de modo diferente, colocándose en posturas diferentes, para que su bola se mueva con efectos y trayectorias de forma controlada.

LA POSTURA PARA JUGADORES DE HANDICAPS ALTOS

En estos casos trato de evitar al máximo posturas cruzadas, esto es, cuando el cuerpo apunta a la izquierda y la cara de este al objetivo o, peor aun, a la derecha del mismo, ya que esto provoca golpes abiertos y pérdida de distancia. Es por ello que tenéis que trabajar estos punto en el stance:

- La parte izquierda del cuerpo: tratad de que vuestros hombros, caderas y pies estén ligeramente más adelantados que la parte derecha.

- Nunca colocaros la bola frente a vuestro pie izquierdo; la bola siempre más centrada.

- El peso colocarlo en los cordones de los zapatos; a veces nos sentamos en la bola y el peso queda muy a los talones. Evitad ese error.

Correcto: La parte izquierda del cuerpo, estará mejor algo mas adelantada que la parte derecha Correct: The left side of the body should be slightly more forward than the right side.

2. BALL POSITIONING

We often deal with positioning errors in high-handicap players because they need to have or mechanize a neutral position that gives them confidence and consistency and that they can use in a high percentage of their shots on the course. The idea at the beginning is to create a movement-effect on the ball that they can control within their capabilities.

Low handicap players need to learn how to move the ball and create effects, which is why they need to work differently, placing themselves in different positions so that their ball moves with controlled effects and trajectories.

THE STANCE FOR HIGH-HANDICAP PLAYERS

In these cases, I try to avoid cross-over stances as much as possible, that is, when the body points to the left and the face points to the target or, even worse, to the right of it, as this causes open shots and loss of distance.

That is why you have to work on these points in your stance:

- The left side of the body: try to keep your shoulders, hips, and feet slightly ahead of the right side.

- Never place the ball in front of your left foot; always keep the ball more centered.

- Place your weight on your shoelaces; sometimes we sit on the ball and the weight is too much on our heels. Avoid this mistake.

3. LA LÍNEA DEL SWING

El paso anterior es básico para que este se pueda hacer bien. Es por ello que contando con la colocación correcta es fundamental que trabajéis como comenzar el swing y por ello tenéis que saber cuál es la secuencia correcta del movimiento: Primero se mueven los hombros, girándolos, y luego los brazos, ya que de no hacerlo así la línea de swing será errónea.

Ejercicio: Colocad una varilla de alineación cerca de la cara del palo para que este suba alejándose, y al bajar nunca la toquéi. También podréis hacerlo cerca de una pared para que tengáis mejor percepción.

4. EL LUGAR DEL IMPACTO

Una pregunta muy común es cuál es el lugar de impacto correcto en un golpe: si es antes de la bola, a la bola directamente o después de la bola.

La respuesta correcta es directamente a la bola. En mi opinión es donde realmente estamos aprovechando toda la inercia, velocidad y ángulo del mismo.

No podremos realizar un buen impacto si la transferencia de pesos, el giro y el ángulo no son medianamente buenos.

Mi consejo: Los jugadores poco experimentados tienen que trabajar un ejercicio que suelen incluso hacer los profesionales y consiste en hacer el swing de prácticas con los pies juntos, tratando de golpear cepillando el suelo con el palo y que este toque en el mismo punto exacto donde comenzáis vuestro swing. Al terminar, sentir el peso-presión en vuestra pierna izquierda.

3. THE SWING LINE

The previous step is essential for doing this correctly. That’s why, once you have the correct stance, it’s vital that you work on how to start the swing, and to do that you need to know the correct sequence of movements: first move your shoulders, rotating them, and then your arms, because if you don’t do it this way, the swing line will be wrong.

Exercise: Place an alignment rod near the face of the club so that it moves away as it rises, and never touches it as it descends. You can also do this near a wall for better perception.

4. THE IMPACT POINT

A very common question is what is the correct impact point in a shot: is it before the ball, directly on the ball, or after the ball?

The correct answer is directly on the ball. In my opinion, this is where we are really taking advantage of all the inertia, speed, and angle of the swing.

We will not be able to make a good impact if the weight transfer, rotation, and angle are not reasonably good.

My advice: Inexperienced players need to work on an exercise that even professionals often do, which consists of practicing your swing with your feet together, trying to hit the ground with the club and making sure it touches the exact same spot where you start your swing. When you finish, feel the weight and pressure on your left leg.

CALENTAR O ESTIRAR EN EL GOLF: ¿CUÁNDO, CÓMO Y POR QUÉ?

¿Cuántas veces hemos llegado al tee del hoyo 1 con las prisas, sin preparar el cuerpo, pensando que un par de estiramientos rápidos son suficientes?

La realidad es que calentar y estirar no son lo mismo, y saber cuándo hacer cada cosa puede marcar la diferencia entre disfrutar de la partida, mejorar el swing… o acabar con dolor en la espalda baja y los hombros.

Como fisioterapeuta deportiva y profesora de golf, lo veo constantemente: golfistas de todos los niveles que confunden calentamiento con estiramiento. Y aunque ambos son fundamentales, tienen objetivos muy diferentes

CALENTAR: ACTIVAR ANTES DE JUGAR

El calentamiento prepara al cuerpo y a la mente para el movimiento. Su objetivo es elevar la temperatura muscular, mejorar la movilidad articular y despertar la coordinación neuromuscular. Dicho de forma sencilla: poner el motor en marcha antes de exigirle potencia y precisión.

Un buen calentamiento en golf debe ser dinámico y específico, no solo trotar o mover los brazos al aire. Y lo ideal es dedicarle entre 5 y 10 minutos.

Ejemplos prácticos de calentamiento (con palo o banda elástica):

• Rotaciones de tronco con palo en hombros: De pie, palo apoyado en la nuca, girar suavemente de un lado a otro, aumentando poco a poco el rango. FOTO 1

• Swing progresivo con hierro: Empezar con swings cortos y suaves, aumentando gradualmente hasta la amplitud completa.

• Aperturas con banda elástic: Sujetar la banda con ambas manos y abrir hacia afuera para activar la musculatura de hombros y escápulas.

ESTIRAR: RECUPERAR DESPUÉS DE JUGAR

El estiramiento, en cambio, tiene la misión de relajar y devolver elasticidad a los músculos tras el esfuerzo

Sirve para mejorar la flexibilidad, reducir la tensión acumulada y favorecer la recuperación. FOTO 2

No es recomendable hacer estiramientos largos y estáticos justo antes de empezar, porque “adormecen” al músculo y pueden restar potencia al swing; en cambio, al final de la vuelta, dedicar unos minutos a estirar es una inversión en salud y prevención de lesiones.

WARMING UP OR STRETCHING IN GOLF: WHEN, HOW, AND WHY?

How many times have we rushed to the tee box on hole 1 without preparing our bodies, thinking that a couple of quick stretches are enough?

The reality is that warming up and stretching are not the same thing, and knowing when to do each can make the difference between enjoying the game, improving your swing... or ending up with lower back and shoulder pain.

As a sports physiotherapist and golf instructor, I see it all the time: golfers of all levels confusing warming up with stretching. And although both are essential, they have very different objectives

WARMING UP: ACTIVATING BEFORE PLAYING

Warming up prepares the body and mind for movement. Its objective is to raise muscle temperature, improve joint mobility, and awaken neuromuscular coordination. Simply put: it’s like starting your engine before demanding power and precision from it.

A good golf warm-up should be dynamic and specific, not just jogging or swinging your arms in the air. Ideally, you should spend 5 to 10 minutes on it.

Practical examples of warm-ups (with a club or elastic band):

• Torso rotations with a club on your shoulders – Stand with the club resting on the back of your neck and gently rotate from side to side, gradually increasing the range. PHOTO 1

• Progressive swing with an iron – Start with short, gentle swings, gradually increasing to full range.

• Openings with elastic band – Hold the band with both

Ejemplos prácticos de estiramiento (con palo o banda elástica):

• Estiramiento de hombros con palo: Sujetar el palo detrás de la espalda con ambas manos y llevar suavemente hacia arriba para abrir el pecho y hombros. Suave y lento, 10 veces.

• Isquiotibiales con palo como apoyo: Colocar el talón sobre un banco o buggy, usar el palo como soporte y flexionar el tronco hacia adelante suavemente. Mantener sin movimiento, 30 segundos. Repetir.

• Estiramiento de columna con banda: Sujetar la banda a un punto fijo, inclinarse hacia atrás dejando que la espalda se estire con la resistencia del elástico. Mantener 30 segundos y repetir. El golf es un deporte de precisión, pero también de resistencia física y mental. Calentar y estirar son dos caras de la misma moneda: el primero te prepara para rendir mejor y el segundo te ayuda a recuperarte y seguir jugando durante muchos años sin dolores. FOTO 3 y FOTO 4

Dedicar unos minutos antes y después de cada partida puede parecer un detalle menor, pero créeme: invertir en tu cuerpo es invertir en tu juego y en tu salud! ■

“SANTA MARÍA GOLF ES UN CAMPO DE REFERENCIA EN LA COSTA DEL SOL”

Ali Saudi, consejero delegado de Santa Maria Golf, llegó a España en 1988 procedente de Libia y, aunque al principio se dedicó al sector inmobiliario, muy pronto la empresa familiar a la que él pertenece compró el campo, que entonces tenía solo nueve hoyos.

Esto fue en el 91, y casi enseguida se embarcaron en la aventura de hacer los otros nueve para convertir a este recorrido en uno de los de referencia de pay and play de la Costa del Sol. Así se ha mantenido desde entonces. “Nunca hemos querido vender acciones”, dice Saudi, “siempre hemos mantenido la propiedad, aunque contamos con unos 450 abonados anuales y casi otros tantos en lista de espera”.

“Después de la pandemia”, prosigue, “iniciamos una nueva fase de mejoras constantes e intensivas del campo que están transformando positivamente el recorrido. Fue una decisión acertada, estoy seguro, porque la gran inversión que hicimos y continuamos haciendo está dando sus frutos, situándonos entre los grandes recorridos de la Costa, con una alta y apreciada calidad en todos los aspectos”.

–¿Cómo situaría a Santa María en el panorama actual del golf de la Costa del Sol?

–Somos, sin duda, un campo muy apetecible para la inmensa mayoría de jugadores que visitan nuestro destino; Santa María Golf es un campo atractivo que puede competir en igualdad de condiciones con la mayoría de los recorridos de la Costa del Sol.

MARÍA GOLF IS A BENCHMARK COURSE ON THE COSTA DEL SOL”

Ali Saudi, CEO of Santa Maria Golf, arrived in Spain in 1988 from Libya. Although he initially worked in the real estate sector, his family business soon bought the course, which at the time had only nine holes.

This was in 1991, and almost immediately they embarked on the adventure of developing the other nine holes to turn this course into one of the Costa del Sol’s leading pay-and-play courses.

–How would you place Santa María in the current golf landscape on the Costa del Sol?

–We are, without a doubt, a very desirable course for the vast majority of players who visit our destination; An attractive course that can compete on equal terms with most of the courses on the Coast.

–¿Qué diferencia este campo de otros?

–Yo diría que destacamos por la calidad del mantenimiento, y por contar con un diseño accesible, a la par que estratégico y técnico. Desde hace algún tiempo no paramos de mejorar, tanto el propio campo como el resto de las instalaciones. Hemos hecho y seguimos haciendo inversiones muy importantes que están dando sus frutos.

–¿Qué evolución ha tenido el campo? ¿Qué reformas han hecho?

–La primera gran transformación fue hace años, pasando de 9 a 18 hoyos; luego, hace como unos seis años, decidimos ampliar el recorrido para pasar de par 70 a par 72. Ahora nos hemos propuesto cambiar por completo todos los greens.

–¿Cuántos greens habéis reformado ya?

–Hemos terminado nueve. Y creo que entre el año que viene y el siguiente los terminaremos todos. Esto va a ser un gran

impulso para la calidad del campo, que es nuestro mayor empeño. Los estamos reformando de tres en tres, poco a poco, para no tener que cerrar el campo ni molestar a los jugadores. Estamos poniendo una variedad renovada de agrostis de última generación que va muy bien.

–¿Qué otras novedades tenéis?

–Hemos renovado un poco la casa club, la tienda, hace algún tiempo, y últimamente el restaurante… Y espero, espero que un día no muy lejano nos den la licencia para hacer el hotel.

–¿Ese es el futuro inmediato de Santa Maria, la gran baza con la que contáis?

–Sí, es algo importante para el club. Haríamos el hotel en la casa club, q ue además de ser un edificio precioso, clásico y típicamente andaluz, es arquitectónicamente único, y cuenta con el espacio suficiente para hacer un número de habitaciones reducido

For some time now, we’ve been constantly improving both the course itself and the rest of the facilities. We’ve made and continue to make significant investments that are paying off.

–How has the course evolved? What renovations have you done?

–The first major transformation was years ago, going from 9 to 18 holes; then, about six years ago, we decided to expand the course from par 70 to par 72. Now we’ve set out to completely redesign all the greens.

–How many greens have you renovated so far?

–We’ve finished nine. And I think between next year and the following year we’ll finish them all. This is going to be a huge boost to

the quality of the course, which is our greatest endeavor.

We’re renovating them three at a time, little by little, so we don’t have to close the course or disturb the players. We’re installing a new variety of agrostis, the latest generation, which is going very well.

–What other developments do you have?

–We renovated the Clubhouse and the shop a little some time ago, and recently the restaurant… And I hope, I hope, that one day soon we’ll get the permit to build the hotel.

–Is that the immediate future of Santa Maria, the great asset you have?

–Yes, it’s something important for the club. We would build the hotel in the clubhouse, which, in addition to being a beautiful, classic, and typically Andalusian building, is architecturally unique, and has enough space to build a small number of rooms, but enough to become an attractive and inviting hotel. 9 5 6 4 3 2

Por supuesto, también recibimos algunas quejas, pero esto no es malo necesariamente, porque aprendemos de ellas. Tomamos nota y las tenemos en cuenta para seguir mejorando continuamente.

–¿Diría que el campo se encuentra en el mejor momento de su historia?

–No, lo estará dentro de un par de años. Espero que Santa Maria se convierta definitivamente en un referente de la Costa del Sol. Ya lo es para muchos jugadores, pero va a ser todo mucho mejor. El futuro va a ser brillante.

Yo creo, por otra parte, que el golf en general no está en absoluto en retroceso, que hay relevo generacional y que la Costa del del Sol siempre va a ser un destino preferente. Tenemos que estar preparados. ■

–When do you plan to start the works?

–As I said, we’re waiting for some permits, licenses, etc. I wouldn’t dare to set a timeframe.

–What is the feedback from the players who visit your course?

–We have players of many nationalities, visitors from all over the world, and, in general, they compliment us on the quality of the course, the service, the treatment they receive from our staff, and the friendly, family-like atmosphere we enjoy here.

Of course, we also receive some complaints, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because we learn from them. We take note and take them into account to continue improving.

–Would you say the course is at its best in history?

–No, it will be in a couple of years. I hope that Santa Maria will definitively become a landmark on the Costa del Sol. It already is for many players, but everything is going to be much better. The future is going to be bright. I believe, on the other hand, that golf in general is not in decline at all, that there is a generational change, and that the Costa del Sol will always be a preferred destination. Dos hoyos que cambiaron mucho son el 14 y el 15. En el 14 se bajó bastante la cota del green y es ahora un hoyo de recuperación. El anterior green era extremadamente difícil con una entrada ciega y con una pendiente excesiva. En el hoyo 15 se quitó el lago que tenía antes del green humanizándolo y haciéndolo más justo.

El hoyo 18 pasó de ser un par 5 corto a un retador par 4 largo y difícil, de 385 metros desde amarillas, con la atractiva vista de la impresionante casa club al fondo. ■

The major renovation of the course, completed five years ago, was comprehensive and included design tweaks as well as new buggy paths, drainage, and irrigation. The result was an impeccable playing surface with the necessary density and firmness.

The greens were changed, giving them more movement, while achieving an almost imperceptible transition between the green surface and the collar and apron. The presentation of the greens

The aesthetic effect was very positive, as was the effect on play, making it easier to reach the green and find a stray ball, as well as saving water, fertilizers, and labor, making the project more sustainable.

Two holes that have changed significantly are the 14th and 15th. On the 14th, the green has been lowered considerably and is now a recovery hole. The previous green was extremely difficult with a blind approach and an excessive slope. On the 15th hole, the lake that used to be in front of the green has been removed, making it more human and fairer.

The 18th hole went from being a short par 5 to a challenging long and difficult par 4, measuring 385 meters from the yellow tees, with an attractive view of the impressive clubhouse in the background. ■

With more than three decades dedicated to golf agronomy, Íñigo Soto has taken an exciting path: from his beginnings in Michigan to his years at Valderrama, Atalaya, and Sotogrande, to leading the transformation of Finca Cortesín, now an international benchmark for sustainability and quality.

En esta entrevista, el director agronómico de Finca Cortesín repasa su trayectoria, los retos de mantener un campo de élite y su compromiso con la formación de las nuevas generaciones. – Íñigo, ¿cómo empezó tu relación con el golf y la agronomía?

–Desde pequeño fui aficionado al golf y en casa siempre hubo un fuerte vínculo con la agricultura. Yo soy el octavo de nueve hermanos y, cuando terminé mis estudios de Agronomía, mi padre me lanzó la idea: “¿No habrá algo que una esto con el golf?”. Y ahí empezó todo.

– ¿Cómo diste el salto a especializarte en golf?

–En 1991 me lancé a la aventura y me fui a la Universidad Estatal de Michigan, en un tiempo sin internet ni móviles, siguiendo los pasos de Cosme Bergareche. Fueron dos años intensos, estudiando solo golf: construcción de greens, fertilización de fairways, drenajes… Todo era nuevo para mí. Fue apasionante descubrir el golf desde esa perspectiva.

–A tu regreso, llegaron Valderrama, Atalaya y Sotogrande. ¿Cómo recuerdas esa etapa?

–Primero hice prácticas en Valderrama, con don Jaime Ortiz Patiño, en plena época de los Volvo Masters. Después pasé a Atalaya Golf por

cuatro años y, en 1996, me contrataron en el Real Club de Sotogrande, donde pasé ocho años maravillosos, tanto en lo profesional como en lo personal, porque vivía junto al campo y disfrutaba cada día.

– Después te involucraste en la construcción de campos.

Íñigo, how did your relationship with golf and agronomy begin?

I was a golf fan since I was a child, and there was always a strong connection with agriculture at home. I’m the eighth of nine siblings, and when I finished my agronomy studies, my father suggested to me: “Isn’t there something that connects this with golf?” And that’s where it all began.

How did you make the leap to specializing in golf?

In 1991, I took the plunge and went to Michigan State University, at a time without internet or cell phones, following in the footsteps of Cosme Bergareche. They were two intense years, studying only golf: green construction, fairway fertilization, drainage... Everything was new to me. It was exciting to discover golf from that perspective.

Upon your return, Valderrama, Atalaya, and Sotogrande arrived.

How do you remember that time?

First, I interned at Valderrama with Jaime Ortiz Patiño, right at the height of the Volvo Masters. Then I moved to Atalaya Golf for four years, and in 1996, I was hired at the Real Club de Sotogrande,

–Exacto. En 2017 decidimos dar ese paso, que en Estados Unidos se había demostrado era una apuesta de éxito. Muchos pensaron que estaba loco, pero el clima, el uso de agua regenerada y la necesidad de consistencia nos llevaban ahí. Fue un reto enorme y hoy es una de las señas de identidad de Finca Cortesín. La experiencia de juego es distinta y muy valorada por los jugadores.

– El campo ha albergado grandes torneos, como la Solheim Cup. ¿Qué supone para ti?

–Es un orgullo. Estos eventos obligan a tener el campo perfecto y, una vez llegas

How did you end up at Finca Cortesín?

In 2008, Javier Reviriego, the course director at the time, called me. The first Volvo Match Play was approaching, and there was a lot to do. I first went as an advisor, coming one day a week, but they soon offered me a place to stay. It’s been 16 years, and the course has changed radically.

What we were asked to do was bring the course up to the level of excellence of the Finca Cortesín hotel and for the guest to have that same perception of quality.

Durante muchos años mi rutina fue entrar el primero, entre las seis y las siete de la mañana, organizar las tareas y luego recorrer el campo para comprobar que todo se hacía correctamente. Por la mañana se concentran los cortes y labores que podrían molestar a los jugadores, y después del desayuno llegan los trabajos de detalle: podas, arreglos fuera de greens o fairways.

Ahora, con el equipo tan consolidado que tenemos, ya no vengo siempre a primera hora, pero sí suelo dar una vuelta por las tardes para ver qué hace falta. Han sido muchos años de madrugones y de trabajar fines de semana, porque aquí no hay sábado ni domingo.

Tenemos un equipo numeroso, pero hay que tener en cuenta que las reformas y mejoras las acometemos con medios propios.

– ¿Qué proyectos o mejoras te gustaría llevar a cabo?

–Siempre hay ideas. Algunos hoyos podrían remodelarse para ser más amables al juego, pero eso requiere obras importantes y a veces incluso cerrar el campo, así que hay que pensarlo bien. También hay detalles más pequeños, obras razonablemente económicas, que se

– ¿Dirías que el campo está en su mejor momento?

It’s a source of pride. These events require you to have the perfect course, and once you reach that level, you can’t lower the bar. The Solheim was an incredible success: the course was impeccably presented and showed we can be among the best.

What’s your day-to-day life like on the course?

No one is indispensable here; the important thing is having a team that shares your work philosophy. That allows you to go home with peace of mind. For many years, my routine was to arrive first, between six and seven in the morning, organize the tasks, and then walk around the course to check that everything was done

correctly. In the morning, we concentrate on the cuts and other tasks that might bother the players, and after breakfast, we do the detailed work: pruning, repairs outside the greens or fairways.

afternoons to see what’s needed. It’s been many years of getting up early and working weekends, because there are no Saturdays or Sundays here.

We have a large team, but you have to keep in mind that we undertake the renovations and improvements with our own resources.

–Sí, sin duda. Desde las reformas hemos trabajado mucho en sostenibilidad y medio ambiente. Hemos cambiado variedades de césped en greenes y en todo el resort, sustituyendo hierbas de clima frío por especies como la zoysia, que necesita menos siegas y menos productos. –También eres muy activo en la formación de nuevos profesionales.

There are always ideas. Some holes could be redesigned to be more playable, but that requires major renovations and sometimes even closing the course, so it needs to be thought through. years, you see potential for improvements on some holes, but the truth is, if no one has complained in 20 years, it can’t be that bad either. We have conversations and visits from Cabell Robinson quite often and we also follow his instructions.

Would you say the course is at its best?

Yes, definitely. Since the renovations,

we’ve worked hard on sustainability and the environment. We’ve changed grass varieties on the greens and throughout the resort, replacing cool-season grasses with species like zoysiagrass, which requires less mowing and fewer nutrients. The owners are delighted, and the results are very positive.

In addition, we have a testing ground to continue innovating. We achieved GEO and ISO 14001 certification, and we launched interesting projects: we installed beehives and produced our own honey, we conducted a bird study, and we installed bird feeders and waterers, considering the long, dry summers. These are small details that don’t cost much, but they contribute greatly to the course and the surroundings.

We do all of this using 100% reclaimed water. There isn’t a drop of natural water available here, so we depend on the Manilva wastewater treatment plant. And the truth is, it works very well: without that resource, this course wouldn’t exist.

– You’re also very active in training new professionals.

Yes, I love teaching. Every summer we host three or four interns, and more than 30 have already come through here; more than 20 of them now work in the industry. I think it’s important to pass on what we’ve learned and help the next generation grow. ■

Previamente conocido como San Roque New, el hermano menor (por su juventud) se emancipa y busca su propio hueco en el panorama de grandes campos que podemos encontrar en el entorno de Sotogrande. Tras su inauguración en 2003, este fantástico diseño de Perry Dye, en colaboración con Seve Ballesteros, acogió el Open de España en 2006 con victoria de Niclas Fasth en un cuarto hoyo de playoff frente a John Bikerton.

REBIRTH OF A GREAT COURSE

Previously known as San Roque New, the younger brother (due to its youth) has emancipated itself and carved out its own niche in the panorama of grand courses found around Sotogrande. After its inauguration in 2003, this fantastic Perry Dye design, in collaboration with Seve Ballesteros, hosted the 2006 Spanish Open, with Niclas Fasth winning in a fourth-hole playoff against John Bikerton.

El paisaje, en el que predominan los alcornoques maduros, es soberbio y es la nota dominante de un recorrido muy agradable y técnico; desde algunos hoyos se tienen espléndidas vistas al Mediterráneo y a un entorno muy amplio de grandes propiedades con fantásticos jardines que son seña de identidad de la zona.

La proximidad al Estrecho de Gibraltar hace que no sea infrecuente la presencia de viento, lo que colabora a que el campo se defienda junto con la velocidad a la que suelen estar sus magníficos greenes.

También es singular el primer par 3, el muy desafiante hoyo 4 y el hoyo 8, un par 3 con un enorme bunker que jalona todo el lateral de la calle a su izquierda y que tiene un diseño muy característico con los taludes forrados con traviesas de ferrocarril. El hoyo 10, un dogleg a la derecha corto y muy técnico es otro hoyo muy especial, como también lo es el 16, un par 5 que primero baja y luego sube a un green en alto con muchas posiciones de bandera. Estamos ante un gran recorrido y un gran diseño, ubicado en un entorno de gran valor y con una trayectoria prometedora y un futuro de gran relevancia en una de las mejores zonas donde disfrutar del golf de calidad en el Sur. Sin duda, una visita más que recomendable. ■

Also unique are the first par 3, the very challenging hole 4, and the 8th, a par 3 with a huge bunker that lines the entire side of the fairway to its left and has a very distinctive design with slopes lined with railway sleepers.

The 10th, a short and very technical dogleg to the right, is another very special hole, as is the 16th, a par 5 that first slopes downwards and then upwards to an elevated green with numerous flag positions.

El presidente de la Real Federación Andaluza de Golf (RFGA), Pablo Mansilla, desgrana en esta entrevista interesantes aspectos del evento.

–¿Qué significa para Andalucía acoger de nuevo el Open de España femenino y hacerlo en Málaga, en Guadalhorce?

–Es un orgullo y una responsabilidad. Este torneo proyecta a Andalucía y la Costa del Sol como destino líder de golf en Europa: meteorología, campos de máximo nivel y una oferta turística diferencial. Guadalhorce es un club con alma competitiva y un equipo humano extraordinario; reúne las condiciones perfectas para que las mejores jugadoras brillen y para que el público viva el golf de cerca. Ya se vivió el año pasado con la gran victoria de Carlota Ciganda y seguro que volvemos a disfrutar de un espectáculo magnífico.

–¿Qué impacto económico y turístico prevén para la zona?

–El impacto es muy relevante y, sobre todo, está bien distribuido: hoteles, restauración, transporte, comercios y proveedores locales. Además, contribuye a la desestacionalización: el golf trae visitantes de calidad durante todo el año. El torneo es un escaparate internacional que refuerza la marca Andalucía–Costa del Sol con imágenes que viajan a decenas de países.

–¿Qué papel juega el Open en el impulso del golf femenino?

–Es clave. Ofrece referentes a nuestras niñas y a las jóvenes que se forman en las escuelas andaluzas, y visibiliza un mensaje inequívoco: mismas oportunidades, mismo escenario y misma

excelencia. Queremos que más niñas den su primer golpe con la seguridad de que aquí hay un camino deportivo y profesional real. Son ya diez años consecutivos acogiendo este torneo y no hay duda de que algunas de las que pronto jugarán el Open de España estaban de público en aquellas primeras ediciones siendo unas niñas.

–Sostenibilidad y agua: ¿qué está haciendo el golf andaluz y qué veremos en el torneo?

–El sector lleva años profesionalizando el uso eficiente del agua, con riego sectorizado, sensores de humedad, especies de bajo consumo y un creciente uso de aguas regeneradas allí donde es viable. En el torneo siempre se pone el foco en buenas prácticas: gestión responsable del campo, control de insumos y un plan de residuos y reciclaje. El golf es parte de la solución cuando se trabaja con rigor técnico. Y aquí en Andalucía llevamos haciéndolo mucho tiempo.

–¿Qué legado deja el Open en la comuni-

dad local y en los federados?

–Tres legados: deportivo (más niñas y niños en las escuelas, clinics y jornadas de puertas abiertas), social (voluntariado, implicación de clubes y empresas) y formativo (capacitaciones en reglas, arbitraje, greenkeeping, sostenibilidad). Queremos que, pasado el domingo, quede algo que perdure en Málaga y en toda Andalucía. Como siempre ha sucedido en cada edición, como aquella primera del Open de España Femenino en Las Aves en 1982. Se han jugado 31 ediciones del Open de España Femenino y 13, más de un tercio, han sido en Andalucía. La próxima será la decimocuarta. Muy orgulloso.

–¿Cómo se prepara Guadalhorce para recibir a las mejores jugadoras de Europa?

–Con planificación y cariño. El club trabaja mano a mano con la Federación, los comités de greenkeeping y la organización del Ladies European Tour para ofrecer greens firmes y ho-

nestos, zonas de recuperación exigentes y una experiencia de público cómoda y segura. Es un campo que premia el buen golpe y que sabe “vestirse de gala” para un Open. Ya lo ha hecho antes. Pese a los problemas que tuvimos el año pasado por las lluvias, las jugadoras acabaron encantadas y el club demostró una vez más que es de primerísimo nivel.

–¿Qué mensaje le daría al aficionado que quizá nunca ha ido a un torneo?

–Que se anime. Verá de cerca a las mejores jugadoras, aprenderá de su rutina, su estrategia y su control emocional. Es una experiencia familiar, al aire libre, con zonas de práctica donde inspirarse y un ambiente muy cercano. El golf en vivo engancha y Málaga es el lugar perfecto para descubrirlo.

–Y a las empresas y patrocinadores que aún dudan si involucrarse en el golf, ¿qué se les puede decir?

The Real Guadalhorce Golf Club, one of the most iconic venues in Andalusian golf, will once again host the 2025 Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España presented by Oysho, the final event of the Ladies European Tour (LET) season, which will be held from November 27 to 30. This will be the second consecutive year that the Malaga club has hosted the most important women’s golf tournament in Spain, consolidating its position as a leading venue for major international events.

The president of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation (RFGA), Pablo Mansilla, discusses interesting aspects of the event in this interview.

-What does it mean for Andalusia to host the Spanish Women’s Open again, and to do so in Malaga, at Guadalhorce?

–It is a source of pride and a responsibility. This tournament showcases Andalusia and the Costa del Sol as a leading golf destination in Europe: great weather, top-level courses, and a unique tourist offering. Guadalhorce is a club with a competitive spirit and an extraordinary team; it has the perfect conditions for the best players to shine and for the public to experience golf up close. We saw this last year with Carlota Ciganda’s great victory, and I’m sure we’ll enjoy another magnificent spectacle.

–What economic and tourist impact do you foresee for the area?

–The impact is very significant and, above all, it is well distributed: hotels, restaurants, transport, shops, and local suppliers. It also contributes to deseasonalization: golf brings quality visitors throughout the year. The tournament is an international showcase that reinforces the Andalusia-Costa del Sol brand with images that travel to dozens of countries.

What role does the Open play in promoting women’s golf?

It is key. It provides role models for our girls and young women who are training in Andalusian schools, and it sends a clear message: equal opportunities, equal playing field, and equal excellence. We want more girls to take their first swing with the confidence that there is a real sporting and professional path here. We have been hosting this tournament for ten consecutive years now, and there is no doubt that some of those who will soon be playing in the Spanish Open were in the audience as children in those early editions.

–Sustainability and water: what is Andalusian golf doing and what will we see at the tournament?

–The sector has been professionalizing the efficient use of water for years, with sectorized irrigation, humidity sensors, low-consumption species, and a growing use of reclaimed

–El retorno es tangible y medible: exposición de marca internacional, activación con clientes y empleados, y asociación a valores de excelencia, sostenibilidad y deporte femenino. Andalucía ofrece un ecosistema maduro: instituciones, clubes y sector turístico remando en la misma dirección. Es una inversión de presente y de futuro.

–Cantera y alto rendimiento: ¿cómo conecta el Open con el desarrollo del talento andaluz?

–El Open es una herramienta pedagógica formidable. Nuestros equipos técnicos programan convivencias y observación en campo para jugadoras y jugadores en edad de formación: preparación de vuelta, toma de decisiones, rutina de práctica… Ver a las mejores compitiendo “en su laboratorio” acelera el aprendizaje de la cantera. –¿Qué le gustaría que el público y las jugadoras recuerden cuando piensen en esta edición de Guadalhorce?

–Que en Andalucía se compite muy bien y se vive aún mejor. Que encontraron un campo preparado con mimo, una organización profesional y una afición cálida. Y que este Open reafirmó a la Costa del Sol y Andalucía como una casa del golf mundial. Si logramos eso, la edición volverá a ser un éxito rotundo. ■

–What legacy does the Open leave in the local community and among federation members?

–Three legacies: sporting (more girls and boys in schools, clinics, and open days), social (volunteering, involvement of clubs and companies), and educational (training in rules, refereeing, greenkeeping, sustainability). We want something to remain in Malaga and throughout Andalusia after Sunday. As has always been the case in every edition, like that first Spanish Women’s Open at Las Aves in 1982. There have been 31 editions of the Spanish Women’s Open and 13, more than a third, have been in Andalusia. The next one will be the 14th. Very proud.

–How is Guadalhorce preparing to welcome the best players in Europe?

–With planning and care. The club is working hand in hand with the Federation, the greenkeeping committees, and the Ladies European Tour organization to offer firm and fair greens, challenging recovery areas, and a comfortable and safe experience for the public. It is a course that rewards good shots and knows how to “dress up” for an Open. It has done so before. Despite the problems we had last year due to the rain, the players ended up delighted and the club proved once again that it is top notch.

–What message would you give to fans who may never have been to a tournament?

–Go for it. They will see the best players up close, learn about their routine, their strategy, and their emotional control. It is a family experience, outdoors, with practice areas to inspire you and a very friendly atmosphere. Live golf is addictive, and Malaga is the perfect place to discover it.

–And what can you say to companies and sponsors who are still hesitant to get involved in golf?

–The return is tangible and measurable: international brand exposure, engagement with customers and employees, and association with values of excellence, sustainability, and women’s sports. Andalusia offers a mature ecosystem: institutions, clubs, and the tourism sector all pulling in the same direction. It’s an investment in the present and the future. ■

III TORNEO JÉSICA REYES EN TORREQUEBRADA

Este año se vuelve a celebrar en Torrequebrada Golf la III edición de este torneo que año tras año va recibiendo mayor acogida por parte de los patrocinadores, por un lado, muchos de ellos empresas de Málaga y Marbella y por el otro, un feedback muy positivo por parte de los jugadores.
