2 | Positive Ageing Month – Get Connected

Welcome

Welcome to the Positive Ageing Month edition of ‘News for You’. Each year we celebrate Positive Ageing Month during October and I am delighted to announce it is back for another year, helping us to highlight the contribution those aged 50 and over make to the Borough of Antrim and Newtownabbey. The month is dedicated to highlighting the many opportunities available to help you stay happy and connected in your local community. Our goal is to make Antrim and Newtownabbey a place where people can live full, active, valued and healthy lives. This year, a varied programme has been organised that will highlight important, practical ways you can live better for longer. Turn to page 11 for a full table of activities and details on how you can register for the events.

Throughout the years the Positive Ageing Month booklet has become a treasure trove of activities and this year I am delighted to bring you even more groups waiting to welcome you. Interested in joining a group but unable to attend in October? Don’t worry, most groups run September to June and would be happy to welcome you at any time. Finally, if you have a question about anything Age-Friendly, do not forget to visit the ‘Ask the Age-Friendly Officer’ section on our website at antrimandnewtownabbey.gov. uk/age-friendly. Pop your query or suggestion into the box on the website. I look forward to hearing from you. Kelly Doyle, Age-Friendly Officer

Build a stronger community volunteer with the antrim and newtownabbey over 50s council In 2025 Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council launched its first Age-Friendly Strategic Workplan. To deliver the plan successfully the voices of our residents are vital when deciding and implementing the actions. To ensure an effective model is in place to do this, the Antrim and Newtownabbey Over 50s Council was formed. Positive Ageing Month marks one year since the Council launched. With over 50 members, quarterly meetings have taken place to discuss various actions including activities for the Over 50s Summer Programme, Positive Ageing Month and how to communicate effectively and positively with our residents.

If you are aged over 50 and live in the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council area and are someone who would like to participate in decisions that affect your life and others, represent older people across the Borough and build new relationships, you are welcome to join. You can read more about the opportunity or sign up by visiting antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/ residents/community-initiatives/agefriendly/over-50-s-council/ Alternatively, please contact Environmental Health T. 028 9034 0160 E. envhealth@ antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk

Take a Break, Take a Seat in Antrim and Newtownabbey Take a Seat is helping people move around the Borough with greater confidence and freedom. More than 40 local businesses and community facilities have joined the scheme, offering a welcoming place to rest when needed — no purchase necessary. With more businesses showing interest, we’re working together to build a more inclusive, accessible and supportive Borough, one seat at a time.

Other Weekly Activities Good Morning Programmes

Walking for All

Good Morning Programmes provide free weekday telephone befriending and alert services for people who may feel lonely, isolated or vulnerable. Friendly volunteers call at an agreed time to chat about health, wellbeing and everyday interests, while also signposting to helpful local services.

Walking for All is a new initiative that offers free, friendly and inclusive community walks for people of all ages and abilities. New walkers are always welcome.

The service can also provide peace of mind through a nominated contact, such as a family member, friend or neighbour. If a scheduled call goes unanswered, the nominated person will be asked to check in and confirm the individual’s wellbeing. People can join the service themselves or be referred by a GP, family member or friend. These valued programmes depend on volunteers who generously give their time to make regular calls. If you would like to make a difference as a telephone befriender, the teams would be delighted to hear from you. Available Monday-Friday For more information or to become a telephone befriender please contact: Good Morning Antrim T. 028 9446 4619 E. gmacoordinator@ familycaringcentre.co.uk
