Following the festive period, I’m sure many of you have been thinking about your New Year’s Resolution. If you are wanting to get back on track with a healthier, more active lifestyle then our leisure membership offers fantastic value for money for all the family and you can read all about it on page 4. Towards the end of last year, I had the pleasure of leading a delegation of seven businesses and our two enterprise agencies to our Sister City, Gilbert in Arizona. The Trade Mission was a great success, generating $1m in sales for the businesses which surpassed all expectations. There are so many ideas and initiatives which we have been able to take from the visit that will benefit our Borough. For more information on the Trade Mission see page 7. We have lots planned for the beginning of 2019, including the cultural extravaganza of arts and entertainment, Antrim Live, which returns to Antrim Town from Friday 5 April until Sunday 7 April - see page 13 for more information. Make sure you also check out our Create programme in this issue which includes all of the exciting arts and culture workshops planned from January through to April this year. If you are looking for a challenge this New Year, then why not join Couch to 5k? In a matter of weeks you could be running 5 kilometres and kick-starting your New Year’s resolution of getting more active, more often. Antrim Forum: Mondays and Wednesdays, 7-8pm. Starts Monday 21 January 2019. V36 at the Valley: Mondays, 7-8pm and Saturdays, 9.30-10.30am. Starts Monday 21 January 2019. Couch to 5k is open to age 16+ and as well as improving your fitness, the sessions are the perfect opportunity for you to socialise, so why not bring a friend along? For the more elite runners, PACE Running Club meets on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7pm and Tuesdays at 10am at Antrim Stadium. So if you are yet to set your New Year’s resolution, then why not get running with us?

QUEST FOR CRUMLIN We are proud to announce Crumlin Leisure Centre recently achieved its Quest Accreditation. WHAT IS QUEST? This accreditation is specific to the Leisure Industry. Achieving the accreditation demonstrates high standards of good practice and continuous improvement in all aspects of the leisure centre. When being evaluated for Quest, assessments include areas such as customer service, housekeeping, environmental issues, sports development and community engagement. This is in addition to marketing and communications with our customers and how we invest in training our staff. WHAT DOES QUEST MEAN FOR OUR CUSTOMERS? Quest provides reassurance to you, our customers, that we are continually working to improve our service. That the latest knowledge and expertise in leisure is being provided by our staff and that our facilities are of a high standard. TRADE MISSION SURPASSES EXPECTATIONS AND GENERATES OVER $1MILLION IN SALES Mayor, Councillor Paul Michael was recently joined by Council Officers, representatives from seven local businesses as well as the two local enterprise agencies on a Trade Mission to Gilbert, Arizona. The purpose of the Trade Mission was to allow the businesses involved to expand into a new export market, aiding sales and job creation opportunities for our local companies and the wider local economy. Over 42 business sales appointments were made for the businesses in advance of the trip which was fundamental in the success of the Trade Mission. The trip was a great success for all, generating over $1million in sales for the businesses which surpassed all expectations. Visits to Galvanise, Speedspot, the Centre for Entrepreneurial Innovation, Barnone, Thrive and TechAccelerator provided delegates with an insight into what will be achieved through the development of a new state of the art Business Incubation and Entrepreneurship Centre for the Borough. The visit was instrumental in providing Council with an insight into innovative new age work space solutions which will be incorporated into future plans.

The Trade Mission has also allowed Councillors and Council Officers to visit leading edge global facilities including TGen, Rivulon, ASU Bio Design Institute, Waymo, Skysong and Footprint Manufacturing. The experience has proved invaluable in informing the Council’s negotiations to secure a £90million investment in an iconic advanced manufacturing research facility for the Borough. This visit and our sister cities link with Gilbert and the Greater Phoenix area in Arizona, represents a legitimate significant part of our economic development strategy and we will continue to explore any opportunities and benefits that arise from this relationship which has been developed over 20 years through an ongoing series of outward and inward visits. A key benefit of the relationship with Gilbert Council Officials has been their invaluable expertise which has assisted the participating businesses to understand the market and address regulatory challenges. Our MORE all-inclusive leisure membership was also introduced as a direct result of the 2016 visit, generating an additional £350,000 of income annually and a 35% increase in membership numbers. We’ve shared our all-inclusive membership model with other councils across Northern Ireland, because they are keen to understand the success of it!

MEET THE TEAM WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO PEOPLE’S LIVES All services provided by the Council’s Environmental Health Team make a difference to people’s lives within the Borough. Let’s meet some of the members of our Health and Wellbeing Team within Environmental Health: Dr Janice McConnell, Nutrition and Wellbeing Officer

Wendy Brolly, Manager

Wendy works with organisations, community and voluntary agencies to develop and deliver projects and services that improve the health and wellbeing of our residents. “The core of what we do is to make a difference to people’s lives and we do this by working with individuals to help them make decisions that will improve their wellbeing” says Wendy.

Janice brings a unique ‘root-cause’ approach to improving the health and wellbeing of our residents through nutrition. She is currently delivering programmes such as Muddy Boots – a scheme which focuses on edible horticulture, and Nutritious Nursery Nosh which looks at improving the dietary habits of those at nursery level. As well as supervising the team, Alison is involved in the multi-agency support hub across the Borough. This forum brings together key professionals such as social workers, PSNI, Health Trust and the Housing Executive who work together to improve the situation for cases of vulnerable individuals in our community. Alison is also leading an innovative co-production project in Toomebridge, which focuses on engaging with the local community to design and deliver better health and wellbeing services.

Kelly delivers a range of projects and initiatives including ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here’, Community Resuscitation and the support hub. Kelly also co-ordinates the placement student programme within Environmental Health. Affordable Warmth Team

Tom Durrant, Home Safety Officer

Reducing accidental injury in the home is the core function of Tom’s role. He does this by highlighting dangers in the home and providing advice and interventions to reduce the risk of having an accident. Tom can provide free home safety checks to residents over the age of 65 and vulnerable adults within the Borough. Tom also offers advice on home safety topics such as carbon monoxide poisoning, burns, scalds, blind cord safety and preventing trips and falls. Free home safety equipment can also be offered, subject to eligibility and availability. Claudine Kelly, Age Friendly Co-ordinator

Sharon’s primary role is to support householders to stay warm and healthy in their home. She assesses households for energy efficiency grants and provides advice on how to reduce energy bills where appropriate. In addition to this, she delivers the Oil Stamp Saving Scheme, which allows householders to budget towards their oil bill. Sharon also provides advice and support to community groups who wish to set up a bulk buying oil club in their area.

TOP AWARD FOR OUR HEALTH AND WELLBEING TEAM The Council’s Health and Wellbeing Team was recently recognised for its outstanding work when it was awarded the title of ‘Outstanding Environmental Health Team’ at this year’s Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Excellence Awards. The entries showcased the breadth of work carried out by environmental health professionals and services across the UK and overseas. The team’s submission highlighted its role in delivering a significant improvement to public health and wellbeing and in particular its innovative work with the Duneane community. This project was recently highlighted in the Chief Medical Officer for Northern Ireland’s annual report. For more information on Health and Wellbeing

NUTRITIOUS NURSERY NOSH The food a child eats in its early years can influence its dietary habits later in life, so it’s important to instil good habits and a healthy relationship with food from an early age. Council is taking a pioneering approach to try and improve the diets of the under 5s at nursery, through their ‘Nutritious Nursery Nosh’ programme. This initiative is currently being developed by our award-winning nutritionist, Dr Janice McConnell, who is working closely with a number of day nurseries throughout the Borough. By looking at the nutritional value of what is currently being provided on the menu and exploring the environment in which children are eating, Janice’s research will help to shape this exciting new programme which we hope to roll out within nurseries across the Borough.

MOVE MORE SUCCESS

We are delighted to announce the ‘Macmillan Move More Programme’ recently won the ‘Coaching for an Active Life’ category at the UK Coaching Awards. This award demonstrates how important the programme is and the commitment the Council has to helping cancer patients stay active. Alan McCausland, pictured with Mayor, Councillor Paul Michael is the Council’s Move More Co-ordinator and works with residents of our Borough who are living with and beyond cancer to ensure they are active at all stages of their cancer journey. Clients can be referred to the programme by healthcare professionals or self-referral and after a brief consultation, can avail of the many physical activities and classes organised throughout the Borough. The programme includes cancer rehabilitation classes which help clients participate in exercise. The classes are free of charge and each client can bring a friend or family member along for company. The benefits of these classes include improved fitness levels, social interaction and combating cancer fatigue. As well as these classes, all clients can avail of a number of sessions at any of our five leisure centres, and access facilities of their choice with classes like Mindfulness, Pilates, Swimming lessons, Walking Football, Golf and Gardening Programs are also available.

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS The results of the NI Best Kept and Ulster in Bloom awards are eagerly awaited every year. The 2018 results demonstrate the hard work and effort put in across the Borough. Ulster in Bloom announced both Antrim and Randalstown 1st place in their relevant categories with Ballynure achieving a very respectable 3rd place in the Small Village category. O’Kanes Pub, Randalstown was presented with a special award for floral design and the Council received special recognition for their efforts with Biodiversity in the management of grass verges. In the NI Amenity Council’s NI Best Kept Awards, Randalstown and Antrim were placed 1st and runner up respectively. Many groups throughout the Borough work in partnership with the Council to achieve a beautiful Borough. Volunteers from local areas take part in clean-ups, plant and maintain summer bedding, paint railings, engage with local schools, youth groups and businesses – the list is endless! While the presentation of an award may be a welcome celebration, the benefits for the local area go way beyond. With the local community engaged, more people become interested and opportunities and ideas develop. REPRINT OF MY LADY OF THE CHIMNEY CORNER As part of the celebration of Alexander Irvine Day in September, Council organised a reprint of Dr Irvine’s most famous book, ‘My Lady of the Chimney Corner’, which had been out of print for many years. Telling the story of his upbringing in Antrim, the book mainly concentrates on Irvine’s mother, Anna and how she brought the family up in circumstances of poverty and shortage in the years following the Famine, fitting them for life with her philosophy of ‘Love is Enough’. This mantra followed Irvine’s work throughout his life as he strove to improve the lot of those he encountered, whether in the slums of New York or the trenches of the Somme. HOMEOWNER FLOOD PROTECTION GRANT SCHEME Homeowners who have experienced flooding, may be eligible to avail of assistance through the Homeowner Flood Protection Grant Scheme. GO FOR IT WITH THE COUNCIL! For any budding entrepreneurs (over 16s) considering starting a new, full-time or part-time business within Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough, the ‘Go For It’ programme is a positive first step. We caught up with Colin McFarlane from Ultra Vapour Works and Jo Cunningham from Pipe Dream, to hear how they made their dreams a reality by going for it! This project is part funded by Invest Northern Ireland and the European Regional Development Fund under the Investment for Growth & Jobs Northern Ireland (2014-2020) Programme.

PIPE DREAM Jo is originally from South Africa and when her son was 19 he had a horrific car accident which resulted in his dexterity and co-ordination being affected. With a piece of left over pipe, she attempted to make a bird box however, she placed a candle under it and it looked great! Her son Brad and his girlfriend Vicky, who met in rehab, helped Jo with the pipes and this helped with improving their co-ordination. Pipe Dream was born in 2015 with Jo moving to Northern Ireland in 2017 and starting the Go For It programme in August 2018. Q1. How did you hear about the Go For It programme? I was given a pamphlet at the Jobs and Benefits Office, no one wanted to employ me! Q2. What support did you receive? Right from the first meeting with Caeris at LEDCOM, the support and advice was amazing! Q3. Would you recommend the Go For It programme? For anyone wanting to start a business or become self-employed, but don’t know where to start, Go For It is very helpful. Caeris was a wealth of information and extremely patient with this old dippy lady – I am sure I asked the same question twice! Q4. Have you any advice for people still thinking about taking the leap into self-employment? Yes, once you have the idea, never doubt yourself! Never think you know it all, seek opinions, accept criticism and put your everything into your new adventure. But most of all, have fun doing it.

ULTRA VAPOUR WORKS Ultra Vapour Works provide a specialist service of Vapour Blasting and Ultra Sonic Cleaning. This process can be applied to any metal item especially those that are rusted, covered in grease and oil. The business started to trade on 1 February 2017 after the completion of a business plan through the Go For It programme. The business is owned and managed by Colin McFarlane who has experience of this process. Colin has a long term passion for working with motorbikes as well as vintage bikes and cars. The business is based at Mallusk Enterprise Park in Newtownabbey.

Through the process, I also received help to secure commercial business premises at Mallusk Enterprise Park. Before. . .

Q3. Would you recommend the Go For It programme? Absolutely! You need a business plan to be properly prepared and I would have struggled to complete a plan on my own. Doing the business plan with Mallusk Enterprise Park gave me an invaluable step by step guide to starting my business. Q4. Have you any advice for people still thinking about taking the leap into self-employment? Invest the time to do your market research and identify who your target customer is. I would also recommend Mallusk Enterprise Park as a fantastic destination for any new business due to the ongoing business support I receive.

RATEPAYERS URGED TO AVAIL OF RATE REBATE Tenants and homeowners who receive Universal Credit are being urged to check their eligibility for the new Rate Rebate scheme. The scheme is being administered by Land & Property Services (LPS), part of the Department of Finance, to provide ratepayers in receipt of Universal Credit assistance with the payment of rates for the home they live in. Rate Rebate is being rolled out in conjunction with Universal Credit across Northern Ireland. Tenants or homeowners should apply for Rate Rebate once they are awarded Universal Credit. Universal Credit details will be used to determine the amount of Rate Rebate that can be awarded. Any claim for Rate Rebate should be made within three months of the claimantâ€™s first Universal Credit payment to ensure no partial loss of any subsequent award. The application is very straightforward and can be completed online at www.nidirect.gov.uk/rate-rebate-scheme. Claimants must first register for an online account using their own email address and when they are registered, they can complete their online application.

For those who are not eligible to apply for Universal Credit, rates support will continue through Housing Benefit for Rates and/or Low Income Rate Relief.

IT’S TIME TO BANK! Have you heard of timebanking? By joining a timebank, members help each other out and then deposit those hours in the ‘bank’. One hour of time spent helping someone will gain you one time credit which you can store up and use when you need or they can be donated to someone else in need. These exchanges can involve practical skills such as DIY or gardening, sewing, learning a new language or simply just sharing a cup of tea. Joining a timebank allows resources, expertise and experience to be shared and can be a real boost to community spirit. Timebanks operate on the principle that time is the new money and everyone can participate, allowing you to meet new friends and share your own skills while learning new ones along the way. AGE FRIENDLY ANTRIM AND NEWTOWNABBEY

MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO PEOPLE’S LIVES

The Community Plan has a vision to make our Borough a place where older people can live life to the full. In order to achieve this, we have recently appointed an Age Friendly Co-ordinator, Claudine Kelly, who will work with local residents and partner organisations. Claudine will be finding out what it’s like to grow older within our Borough and asking ‘what can be done to make things better’. She will be working across Council and with other organisations who deliver services across the Borough and encouraging them to make small changes to become more age friendly. It’s important that older people can influence the planning and design of services which meet their needs and Claudine will be encouraging residents to have more say and be more involved in the decisions that will affect them. As people grow older, they can become socially isolated. It is our aim that older people stay connected within the community and Claudine will be engaging with residents, providing advice and information on the range of activities and services that are available right on their doorstep.

DEMENTIA TRAINING

OLDER PEOPLE’S ART PROJECT If you are 60+ years young, interested in making friends and enjoy being creative then this is the project for you.

We are working with the Alzheimer’s Society and local charity Dementia NI to raise awareness of dementia and what it’s like to live with a diagnosis of dementia.

Located in community centres across the Borough these weekly two hour classes are completely FREE and will run until April 2019. Classes will be a mix of creative reminiscence, painting, music, dance and crafts.

As part of this, FREE training sessions are being offered, where you can become a ‘Dementia Friend’.

This will allow you to learn a bit more about dementia and the small ways you can help – from being patient in a shop queue to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts. By creating a climate of kindness and understanding, you can help to ensure that everyone affected by dementia feels part of society.

HOW ACCESSABLE IS IT? Have you ever visited somewhere and found the access was not what you expected? Perhaps you have found that the accessible toilet is anything but accessible when you have gone to use it? AccessAble, formerly known as DisabledGo, was set up as a result of one man’s experience as a wheelchair user and disabled walker. The service provides the detailed information you need, to work out if a place is going to be accessible to you. We are delighted to be working with AccessAble and have had a number of accessibility audits carried out on our facilities and services to create an online Accessibility Guide. These detailed guides tell you all about a venue’s access and are 100% facts, figures and photographs. You can check out the facts and explore the details before you leave home or even on the move using the app at www.accessable.co.uk

AUTISM IMPACT AWARD We’re on our way to creating a more Autism friendly environment for our customers as we work towards achieving the Autism Impact Award. This award promotes our support for those with additional needs in our Borough. Through the development of Autism Action Plans and the training of our frontline staff, we will be able to confidently provide a service and facilities to the 30,000 individuals and families living with the daily challenges of Autism in Northern Ireland.

AUTISM TRAINING

Once the training is complete, we will have Autism Champions based at each of our venues to help make them more welcoming and accessible to those with Autism and their families.
