Pressure ulcers are a serious and often preventable health care problem. They tend to occur on parts of the body over bony prominences and arise when a person exibits certain medical risk factors. Mechanical factors such as pressure and tissue stress are strongly implicated and the causation of pressure ulcers; prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers demands that we take care of the mechanical as well as the medical environment.
