President’s Message 2022-2023 AHS Yearbook Dear Anatolia High School students, parents, faculty, and staff, Congratulations to all of you on the completion of the 2022-2023 school year. During an exciting year at Anatolia, our students have continued to excel academically while actively engaging with the community and demonstrating their passion for extra-curricular activities through involvement in sports, clubs, and community service. To our students, I am proud of all that you have accomplished and I am excited to have this opportunity to showcase and celebrate your hard work through this yearbook. You have all shown immense creativity, innovation, and dedication, and I am glad to have this opportunity to highlight these achievements within our community. This yearbook offers a glimpse into student life, whether in the classroom, clubs, or conferences, over the past year. From our ACMUN and ACSTAC conferences to performing arts and athletics, it was an exciting year to be able to come together and renew our engagement with all types of learning. In each of our students, I see a shining example of student leadership, inclusivity, and innovation. I would like to extend a special thank you to our faculty and staff who make these endeavors possible through their tireless effort and stewardship of our campus community throughout the year. Mt Olympus Hike September 17-18, 2022

he 2022-2023 academic year marked the long-awaited return of a cherished Anatolian tradition - the Mount Olympus hike for IB2 and 6th form students! On two separate weekends, September 17-18 and 24-25, 121 seniors inaugurated their last year at Anatolia by hiking through rocky terrain and great altitudes to reach Mount Olympus, the tallest mountain in Greece and home to the mythological Greek gods. Joined by 17 faculty and staff members over the two weekends, the students loaded into buses Saturday morning and arrived at Prionia to embark on their journey. After three hours of strenuous climbing, the hikers caught up on much needed rest at the Zolotas refuge. There, they ate a delicious dinner, watched the idyllic sunset, and enjoyed an evening of relaxation and camaraderie before continuing their climb in the morning.

Bright and early on Sunday, students and faculty ate breakfast and were off on the final leg of their hike: the ascent to Skolio. Although Skolio is not the highest summit of Mt. Olympus, it is still no easy feat! Three hours later, students and faculty finished the rather unforgiving exposed stretch of rock and pebbles to reach Skolio. Despite the difficult climb, they were rewarded with magnificent views that surely made the laborious hike worthwhile. Before descending, students captured the moment and took plenty of pictures filled with memories. Overall, within 36 hours, students, faculty, and staff ascended and descended Mt. Olympus, returning to Anatolia ready for another week on Monday! Thank you to all of the staff, faculty, and guides who ensured the students’ safety, timeliness, and enjoyment!

EVENTS Πρόγραμμα «Μαθαίνω, Προστατεύομαι, Βελτιώνομαι και Συνεισφέρω» του DT&S October 31, 2022

ε την Παιδεία και τη Γνώση να αποτελούν βασικούς πυλώνες προοπτικής και ανάπτυξης των κοινωνιών, το Διεθνές Κέντρο Ψηφιακού Μετασχηματισμού και Δεξιοτήτων (DT&S) της Cisco και το Κέντρο Μέριμνας Οικογένειας και Παιδιών (ΚΜΟΠ), σε συνεργασία με τη Διεύθυνση Παιδείας του Δήμου Θεσσαλονίκης, υλοποίησαν το πρόγραμμα «Μαθαίνω, Προστατεύομαι, Βελτιώνομαι και Συνεισφέρω». Η πρεμιέρα πραγματοποιήθηκε τη Δευτέρα, 31 Οκτωβρίου και η πρώτη παρουσίαση της δράσης ολοκληρώθηκε με επιτυχία, με τους μαθητές της Γ’ Γυμνασίου, της Α’ Λυκείου, Β’ Λυκείου και της τάξης ΙΒ1 και συνοδούς την κ. Ελισάβετ Γεροθανάση, την κ. Πέγκυ Περακάκη και την κ. Ειρήνη Σουργκούνη. Η συγκεκριμένη ομάδα μαθητών και μαθητριών αποτελούσε τους Wellbeing Ambassadors του σχολείου που μέσα από μια σειρά εκπαιδεύσεων και σεμιναρίων θα συμβάλουν στην προάσπιση, τη βελτίωση και την προαγωγή της σωματικής, ψυχικής και κοινωνικής ευεξίας της σχολικής κοινότητας. Στο πλαίσιο, της δράσης εντάχθηκαν εβδομαδιαίες επισκέψεις μαθητών Γυμνασίου και Λυκείου, οι οποίες πραγματοποιήθηκαν κάθε Δεύτερα (εκτός αργιών) στο DT&S στη Θεσσαλονίκη για όλο το σχολικό έτος 2022-2023. Στους ευρύτερους στόχους του Προγράμματος ήταν η ενημέρωση για την Τεχνολογία, την Καινοτομία και τις εφαρμογές τους στην καθημερινότητα, η επιμόρφωση των μαθητών για την ασφαλή τους πλοήγηση στο διαδίκτυο, τον σχολικό και τον διαδικτυακό εκφοβισμό και τους τρόπους αναγνώρισης, πρόληψης και αντιμετώπισης περιστατικών bullying. Παράλληλα, στο πλαίσιο των επισκέψεων αναπτύχθηκαν εκπαιδευτικά σεμινάρια για θέματα άσκησης και υγιεινής διατροφής, κυκλοφοριακής συμπεριφοράς και αγωγής, αλλά και τεχνικές -από ειδικούς- για την αύξηση του ποσοστού επιβίωσης θυμάτων καρδιακής ανακοπής. Στις δράσεις συμμετείχαν η Υποδιεύθυνση Δίωξης Ηλεκτρονικού Εγκλήματος Βορείου Ελλάδος, η Περιφέρεια Κεντρικής Μακεδονίας-Αντιπεριφέρεια Ψηφιακής Διακυβέρνησης, το CityLab, η GrcTech και το Kids Save Lives.

Christmas Bazaar December 4, 2022

n December 4th, Anatolia’s annual Christmas Bazaar filled the campus with holiday spirit. Students, friends, families, and alumni swarmed the campus enjoying food, goods, games, and live entertainment. Eighteen (18) clubs had booths at the bazaar, selling products that included homemade jewelry, perfumes, savory food, and warm hot chocolate. The club members worked tirelessly both in and out of school to craft their products and ensure the bazaar’s success. Their collective efforts exemplify Anatolia’s commitment to serving and giving back to our community. A special thank you to the Christmas Bazaar Committee, students, staff, faculty, and everyone who came out to join the festivities!

Christmas Concert December 4, 2022

ne of the most cherished holiday traditions at the Christmas Bazaar is the Christmas Concert, which showcases our students’ musical talents while bringing holiday cheer and entertainment to the bazaar goers. This year, a record-breaking twelve (12) groups, bands, and singers performed, playing a mix of everything from contemporary rock, pop, and classic Greek music to English Christmas carols. School clubs participated in the action too! The Greek Dance club, composed of gymnasium and lykeion students, filled the stage and engaged the audience with traditional dances from all over Greece. The performances were eventually paused for the lighting of the Christmas tree. After the lightning of the dazzling Christmas tree, students took the stage again singing, dancing, and playing instruments well into the evening. The Christmas Concert not only showcased the talents of our students, but it was a heartwarming display of the Anatolia community spirit!

Περιβαλλοντική Επίσκεψη στη Λιμνοθάλασσα Καλοχωρίου December 9, 2022

λοκληρώθηκε για φέτος μία σειρά δράσεων ευαισθητοποίησης για την ανάγκη προστασίας, φροντίδας και διαφύλαξης του περιβάλλοντος που οργάνωσε η Αντιπεριφέρεια Ανάπτυξης και Περιβάλλοντος Κεντρικής Μακεδονίας σε συνεργασία με το Κέντρο STEM του Κολλεγίου Ανατόλια. Μαθητές και μαθήτριες της Β ́ Γυμνασίου επισκέφθηκαν τη λιμνοθάλασσα του Καλοχωρίου όπου ενημερώθηκαν για τον μοναδικό αυτόν υγροβιότοπο, παρατήρησαν τα φλαμίνγκο με τηλεσκόπιο, συνέλεξαν δείγματα νερού από τη λιμνοθάλασσα και μέτρησαν τη θολερότητα και το PH του δείγματος.

IB Language & Literature and Visual Arts Trip to Athens January 14-15, 2023

ore than 40 IBDP students attending Language and Literature as well as Visual Arts boarded the train to Athens on January 14th. On Saturday, they visited the National Gallery of Athens and the Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art, and, in the evening, they attended a performance of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House at the “Poreia” Theater. On Sunday, they visited the National Museum of Contemporary Art and had lunch in Koukaki before boarding the train for their return to Thessaloniki.

IB Visual Arts Exhibition April 3-9, 2023

hirteen IB2 students exhibited their artistic work this year as the practical component of their assessment for the IB Visual Arts course. For this component, students have to complete 8-11 pieces of art that revolve around a concept of their own choice. This year, the students expressed their ideas through a variety of media and techniques including painting, sculpture, installation, and photography. Most students will be pursuing an Art/Design degree in Architecture, Interior Design, Graphic Design and Game Design, and this exhibit was integral in helping them create their individual portfolios to allow them to pursue their studies in their chosen fields.

Career Day May 3, 2023

ην Τετάρτη 3 Μαΐου 2023 στο Σχολείο μας πραγματοποιήθηκε η Hμέρα Επαγγελματικής Ενημέρωσης, το γνωστό Career Day. Συγκεντρώθηκαν 36 επαγγελματίες ή/και ακαδημαϊκοί από διάφορους τομείς (γιατροί, μηχανικοί, καλλιτέχνες, επιχειρηματίες, δικηγόροι και πολλοί άλλοι) οι περισσότεροι από τους οποίους ήταν απόφοιτοι του Ανατόλια με μία επιτυχημένη διαδρομή στον χώρο τους, για να μοιραστούν τις γνώσεις και τις εμπειρίες τους με τους μαθητές μας. Συμμετείχαν περισσότεροι από 750 μαθητές (Γ΄ Γυμνασίου έως και Γ΄ Λυκείου), οι οποίοι είχαν την ευκαιρία να παρακολουθήσουν τρεις ομιλητές σύμφωνα με τα ενδιαφέροντά τους. Οι μαθητές συμμετείχαν σε ουσιαστικές συζητήσεις με τους ομιλητές, έθεσαν τις ερωτήσεις τους και ζήτησαν συμβουλές από τους έμπειρους επαγγελματίες. Η εκδήλωση αποτελεί πηγή έμπνευσης για τους μαθητές μας, πολλοί από τους οποίους ανέφεραν την ικανοποίησή τους στο Γραφείο Συμβουλευτικής του Σχολείου.

Lykeion Field Day May 4, 2023

ield Day this year had a taste of its old glory. 120 Lykeion and IB students competed in track and field activities—100m, 240m, relay run, cross-country race, high jump, and shot put. Then, both Lykeia gathered in the gym, where the boys’ basketball team played against their teachers. The Greek Dance club and the Dance club presented their routines after the basketball game. This year, we also had the pleasure of hosting the champion team Senior Cheer Jazz of the athletic club Hellenic Star, which comprises the National Team and has earned awards in international competitions. We thank the PE Department and all the coaches that made this an amazingly fun day for all!

19η Διεθνής Έκθεση Βιβλίου Θεσσαλονίκης: Μία διαφορετική «ανάγνωση» της Οδύσσειας May 5, 2023

ην Παρασκευή 5 Μαΐου 2023 μαθητές και μαθήτριες της Α’ και Β’ Γυμνασίου του High School συμμετείχαν με έργα τους στη 19η Διεθνή Έκθεση Βιβλίου Θεσσαλονίκης. Η εκδήλωση πραγματοποιήθηκε σε συνεργασία με τη συγγραφέα Βασιλική Νευροκοπλή με αφορμή το βιβλίο της «Ομήρου Οδύσσεια. Το τραγούδι των αιώνων» (Λιβάνης 2022). Οκτώ μαθητές και μαθήτριες της Β’ Γυμνασίου παρουσίασαν εργασίες που είχαν ετοιμάσει στο μάθημα των Νέων Ελληνικών σχετικά με την έννοια του προσωπικού καταφυγίου με αφετηρία την περιγραφή της σπηλιάς της Καλυψώς στο έργο της κας Νευροκοπλή. Κατά τη συνάντηση τα παιδιά συζήτησαν με τη συγγραφέα σχετικά με τις δυνατότητες δημιουργικής αξιοποίησης της ομηρικής ποίησης εκφράζοντας ενδιαφέρουσες απόψεις για την πρόσληψη της Οδύσσειας. Παράλληλα τρεις τοίχοι καλύφθηκαν με εικαστικά έργα περισσότερων μαθητών και μαθητριών των συγκεκριμένων τάξεων με θέμα τη σπηλιά της Καλυψώς και το προσωπικό τους καταφύγιο. Στη διοργάνωση της εκδήλωσης συμμετείχαν οι φιλόλογοι του Κολλεγίου Ανατόλια: Ελένη Χατζημαυρουδή, Ειρήνη Γρηγοριάδου, Βίκυ Καραθόδωρου, Ιουστίνη Κατέρη, Ζωή Κοτρώνη και Άντη Σπάνδου.

Social Responsibility Programs STUDENT VOLUNTEERING ACTIVITIES

A volunteer group of students, faculty and staff cook and distribute meals in different parts of the city to 80 homeless and people in need. Lyceum and IB students participate in the volunteer program of the Papageorgiou General Hospital Association “Antirida”. They manage the patients’ wheelchairs, serve coffee in the hospital waiting area, help the elderly with paperwork, and manage the hospital’s lending library. Students participate in the visual artists group “En Dynamei”, which consists of young people with and without disabilities. Their meetings take place every week with the aim of developing the artistic expression of its members and participating in the artistic development of the city. Students volunteer at various NGOs and associations: Mission Human, Let’s Talk about Autism, Interdisciplinary Network of Special and Intercultural Education «Include», etc.

For the third consecutive year, the Green Ambassadors, consisting of HS students, promote Green Education and raise awareness among their peers and the wider community 9b 9a about environmental issues. During the International Week of Street Magazine Vendors, students participated in the street magazine Schedia campaign and became «Sellers for an hour» raising awareness on social exclusion and poverty. Students volunteering at NGO’s various activities and events: Connected We Stand, YWCA, The Smile of the Child, AES Christmas Whispers. Summer Internships and Volunteering Programs

natolia’s Summer Internships and Programs have been instrumental in helping High School students explore career paths, develop leadership skills, and gain practical experience in their chosen fields. This year, 175 students participated in voluntary programs and internships with 22 different community partners, gaining valuable insights and contributing to their communities in diverse ways.

By ElasmoCatch Project | July 22-29, 2023 In July, Markos Chigkas, Dimitra Giantsidi, Ioannis Polylogidis and Timos Sakellariou found themselves in Menidi of Aitoloakarnania to participate in the «By ElasmoCatch» initiative organized by the iSea environmental organization. During a week-long expedition, the IB students along with Ms. Nana Marmeloudi worked as field researchers, conducting daily sampling and collecting fishing data in the Ambracian Gulf. They visited fishing vessels and, in collaboration with fishermen, completed questionnaires to map the fishing activities of the vessels. This experience enhanced the students’ self-confidence and independence, providing them with practical insight into the work of a scientist and reaffirming their choice of studies.

Northern Aegean Dolphin Project July 3-10 and July 19-26, 2023

This summer, 18 students, led by Ms. Peggy Perakaki, had the incredible opportunity to travel to the picturesque island of Alonissos. Their task was to participate in the NADP, a vital initiative by the «MOm / Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal». This program aims to conduct environmental research, specifically focusing on the conservation of cetacean populations within the National Marine Park of Northern Sporades. But NADP is more than just research; it’s a purposeful endeavor with a profound impact. The students had the chance to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature while working towards its preservation.

JUNIOR PREP FOR COLLEGE US BOUND STUDENTS Forty-nine (49) students from both the High School and the IBDP completed the 10-month Junior College Counseling Class offered by the USCCO. Twenty (20) monthly classes with regular attendance were held, and regular weekly meetings of small groups of students gave support for college essays, resume building, interview practice, college selection and more to our juniors.

SOPHOMORE PREP FOR ALL STUDENTS This year the USCCO office offered a series of in-person classes for all students interested, which focused on college preparation unrelated to destination. Students were encouraged to reflect on their strengths, their passions, and their academic aspirations. They were also introduced to profile building, resumes and essay writing.

COLLEGE PRESENTATIONS Fifty-three (53) virtual and in-person presentations became available to students by US institutional representatives during the fall and spring terms. This fall, parents and students attended an afternoon presentation by the representative of St. Lawrence University, N.Y., while this spring over 120 parents and students attended an afternoon co-presentation by three schools--Northwestern, Vanderbilt, and Dartmouth.

STANDARDIZED TESTING Each year, the USCCO organizes standard test preparation for those students that will be applying to highly selective US higher educational institutions. Last fall, 20 students attended a 6-month virtual SAT preparation course, taught by an experienced team of instructors. For the first time, in collaboration with the Anatolia Testing Center, 3 Advanced Placement Tests were offered to students on our campus.

Over 200 students participated in the USCCO summer application process during the spring term. For summer 2023, a total of 83 students completed their application to 33 different US summer programs. Overall, 48 students will now be attending mostly academic pre-college programs at college and university campuses in the US, many of them on strong scholarships. A handful of upperclassmen will be attending individualized research programs, conducting research alongside professors at Harvard University, Tufts University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and the California Institute of Technology. Among the Anatolia and Pinewood students who chose to stay in Greece this summer, 34 will be attending pre-college classes and academic summer two-week camps at ACT. Farewell to the Retirees

ριάντα δύο χρόνια συνάδελφοι, δεκαέξι αδιάκοπα χρόνια στο ίδιο γραφείο. Αρκετός χρόνος νομίζω, για να γνωρίσεις κάποιον. Κάποιον που γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στην Αγορέλιτσα Μεσσηνίας, μέσα σε μια πολύ καλή οικογένεια, με όχι ανέφελα παιδικά και εφηβικά χρόνια. Μέσα σε ένα αγροτικό περιβάλλον γεμάτο κόπο και αγώνα, ο δρόμος του ήταν χαραγμένος προς τα γράμματα και την μόρφωση. Πάντα ο πρώτος μαθητής, ο πιο έξυπνος, ο πιο φιλομαθής. Πέρασε στο πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης και δούλευε σκληρά παράλληλα με τις σπουδές του για να συντηρεί τον εαυτό του. Κάποια στιγμή γύρω στο 1991, συναντήθηκαν οι δρόμοι μας όταν προσλήφθηκε στο Ανατόλια ως φυσικός και σε λίγα χρόνια έγινε διευθυντής αρχικά του 1ου γυμνασίου και στην συνέχεια του 1ου λυκείου. Είχα την τύχη να έχω τον Κυριάκο Αρβανίτη διευθυντή και συνεργάτη όλα αυτά τα χρόνια. Έζησα από κοντά

τον άνθρωπο, τον εκπαιδευτικό, τον παιδαγωγό, τον διευθυντή. Διέκρινα τα προτερήματα του, τις αρετές και τις ικανότητες του. Τι να πρωτοπώ για τα προτερήματα… Είναι από τους ελάχιστους ανθρώπους στο Ανατόλια που είχε πλήρη εποπτεία της λειτουργίας του σχολείου. Τον ενδιέφερε και γνώριζε κάθε πλευρά της μαθητικής ζωής, της σύνθετης κατάστασης των εκπαιδευτικών, της θέσης των γονέων, των δραστηριοτήτων, των εγκαταστάσεων και τόσων άλλων. Αντιμετώπιζε και χειριζόταν τα ζητήματα που ανέκυπταν με σοβαρότητα και προσοχή. Αυτό που θαύμαζα ιδιαίτερα στον Κυριάκο ήταν ο τρόπος που αντιδρούσε στα προβλήματα, ιδίως αν ήταν σοβαρά και έφερναν ένταση. Αντιδρούσε, όπως έλεγα εγώ, με μελετημένη χρονοκαθυστέρηση, ποτέ εν θερμώ, πάντα με ψυχραιμία, περίσκεψη και αποφασιστικότητα. Μπορεί να συμφωνούσες ή να διαφωνούσες μαζί του, δεν μπορούσες να αρνηθείς όμως ότι η άποψή του βασιζόταν σε λογικά επιχειρήματα. Σεβόταν πραγματικά όποιον είχε απέναντι, τον λάμβανε υπόψη αλλά δεν δίσταζε να γίνει δυσάρεστος αν το θεωρούσε σωστό. Υπολόγιζε και τον τύπο και την ουσία. Έτσι αντιμετώπιζε τους πάντες, διοίκηση, συναδέλφους, γονείς, παιδιά. Ας μείνω λίγο παραπάνω στην σχέση του με τους μαθητές και μαθήτριες του. Τα παιδιά εκτιμούσαν την ειλικρίνεια και το γνήσιο ενδιαφέρον του για αυτά. Αγαπούσαν τον καθηγητή Αρβανίτη ως έναν εξαιρετικό φυσικό, σέβονταν (ίσως και φοβόντουσαν λίγο) τον διευθυντή. Ήξεραν ότι η συμπεριφορά του απέναντι τους ρυθμιζόταν από παιδαγωγικά κριτήρια, ήταν αυστηρή αλλά ταυτόχρονα δίκαιη και αμερόληπτη. Ο Κυριάκος είχε φυσικά και ελαττώματα. Θα μιλήσω για το πιο σοβαρό, αδιόρθωτο ελάττωμα που αναγκάστηκα να ανεχτώ 16 χρόνια. Ο Αρβανίτης είναι Ολυμπιακός! Οι μόνες στιγμές που ξεχνούσε τελείως τη θέση του ήταν όταν ξεμύτιζαν δειλά δειλά οι μαθητές (παοκτσήδες πάντα) στο γραφείο είτε για να κομπάσουν αν ο Ολυμπιακός έχανε, είτε για να μιλήσουν για διαφθορά και «πουλημένο» πρωτάθλημα. Ε τότε ο διευθυντής γινόταν πάλι το παιδί από την Μεσσηνία που μάλωνε και συνεριζόταν σαν να είναι ένας από αυτούς. Ο Αρβανίτης ήταν, είναι και θα είναι ευγνώμων που βρέθηκε και δούλεψε στον Ανατόλια τόσα χρόνια. Ανταπόδωσε ό,τι το σχολείο του προσέφερε, με ακαταπόνητη εργατικότητα, αφοσίωση και αγάπη μέχρι κυριολεκτικά το τελευταίο λεπτό. Τώρα είναι ο καιρός να οργανώσει νέα πράγματα, να ανέβει στον Όλυμπο μόνος του χωρίς την ευθύνη 100 μαθητών, να πάει για σκι τις καθημερινές, να ζήσει άλλες, νέες εμπειρίες. Και σε κάποιο διάλειμμα από όλα αυτά ας ελπίσουμε να φέρνει στο μυαλό του όλους και όλες εμάς που θεωρούμε τύχη στη ζωή μας ότι τον συναντήσαμε. Κατερίνα Δακή

Anatolia graciously welcomed me with open arms, and I am immensely grateful to have worked and learned from such a warm and inviting community, especially the dynamic women in the Student Services Office. I truly enjoyed exploring the beautiful city of Thessaloniki, interacting with intelligent students through clubs, and bonding with the other amazing fellows, all while growing professionally and personally. A heartfelt thank you to the Anatolia community for providing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Working in the High School English Department has been a remarkable experience in so many ways. From the relationships I’ve built with my colleagues and students to the development of my professional interests and more, this fellowship has helped me to spread my wings and explore ideas and places beyond what I could have imagined. Thank you to the Anatolia community for welcoming me with open arms and loving hearts, and know that I will carry you all with me as I continue on my path.

The Anatolia Fellowship has been a deep breath of fresh air- from hiking Mt. Olympus to cheering on the ACT basketball team at a tournament in Belgrade. But the true highlight is the people I interact with each day: whether it is sharing ideas with ACT staff and students, or exploring Thessaloniki with the other fellows, I am thankful to have had the chance to learn and relearn from those around me, feeling welcome in a once unfamiliar country and culture.

I could not have imagined a warmer embrace than the one I was given at Anatolia this year, particularly from the kind and experienced women of the Anatolia Elementary School English Department. I cherish the time I’ve spent learning from them in and out of the classroom, getting to know many wonderful students, and of course, exploring the beauty of Greece alongside the other fellows. Thank you to the Anatolia community for providing us with the space to grow as educators and as people!

Although my time as the Pinewood alumni engagement and events fellow is coming to an end, I have appreciated the chance to make new connections, bring together community members, and witness the creativity and intelligence both Anatolia and Pinewood students have displayed in their school work and volunteer efforts. «Every Moment is an Opportunity to Learn.»

I am so grateful for my time at Anatolia College! It has been a wonderful experience getting to know everyone here and to call Thessaloniki my home for the last year. Aegean Tournament

December 1-4

he beginning of December on Anatolia’s campus marked the widely anticipated return of the Aegean Tournament, the first one since the COVID-19 outbreak! Across 4 jam-packed days, the campus became alive with a total of 725 student-athletes from 15 schools from Athens, Larisa, and Thessaloniki. Fifty-six (56) teams competed in thrilling volleyball, basketball, and soccer matches, and Anatolian teams proved to be tough competitors across all the sports. Despite the first day’s downpouring weather and flooding athletic fields, all student athletes put in their best effort! Anatolian teams battled ferociously during the matches to secure a spot on the podium. In an exhilarating and action-packed final match, the Anatolia Boys’ Volleyball team won first place, narrowly beating their competition. Additionally, the Boys’ Basketball and Girl’s Soccer teams put up a tough fight and placed second. Anatolia athletes dominated the tournament, securing several MVP spots, including Vasilis Cheiladakis for Boys’ Volleyball, Giorgos Chrysafis for Boys’ Basketball, and Claire Lampidou for Girls’ Soccer. A big congratulations to all the student-athletes that competed! Also, a special thanks to the tournament’s organizers and admin staff, the PE Department, the coaches, and the fans for supporting and cheering on our teams!

Junior Aegean Tournament February 17-19

he 4th Junior Aegean Tournament was a resounding success, with 7 participating schools from Thessaloniki, Athens, and Larissa, and 72 Anatolia students. Hosted on our beautiful campus, the tournament showcased the talents of 283 student athletes who competed in Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, Girls’ Volleyball, and Boys’ Soccer. The tournament was a highly anticipated event, as it marked the first Junior Aegean Tournament in three years. The teams competed with much excitement, with the Anatolia teams proudly sporting their blue and yellow jerseys, winning in total 13 out of their 14 games! Junior Aegean provided an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their skills, but it also promoted healthy competition and sportsmanship. We congratulate all participants- athletes, coaches and admin staff- on their excellent performance and we look forward to future events that celebrate the power of sports to bring people together. The untiring work of our PE Department is highly appreciated.

German School Athletic Tournament March 9-11

American Farm School Tournament March 16-18

ive Anatolia teams attended the athletic tournament hosted by the American Farm School. Our Girls’ Soccer team played a friendly game with AFS, while the rest competed for a place on the podium. Congratulations to our Boys’ Basketball and Volleyball teams, which ranked first in the tournament. French Club Trip

Nov 16-20

wenty-eight (28) third-formers traveled to Strasbourg in the French region of Alsace in order to explore French culture and language. In Strasbourg, they visited the Historical Museum, dedicated to the violent history of the city, and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. From the top of the Strasbourg Cathedral, they enjoyed the magnificent view, and on their boat ride, they explored the canals of the river Ill and the landmarks of the Alsatian capital. On Friday, they visited the European Quarter and took a guided tour of the European Parliament, an impressive glass-and-metal building, where they saw the debating Chamber. At the 5eme Lieu, they enjoyed the Journey through Strasbourg, a unique interactive exhibition that takes visitors on a tour through the city’s past and future. Finally, on Saturday, the group visited the town of Nancy in the region of Lorraine, where they explored the Museum of Fine Arts and walked around the World Heritage buildings of Place Stanislas, and the historical Art Nouveau buildings of the old town. Our students and their chaperones–Dora Papoutsi, Stavroula Filippou, and Dimitris Papadamou–returned filled with vibrant images and unforgettable experiences.

Deutsche Club Trip Feb 16-19

orty (40) 4th and 5th formers took off for Frankfurt on February 16, with club advisor Nancy Tsianti, and chaperones Panagiotis Deligiannidis and Diamantis Bitzilekis, in order to get a taste of the German language, culture, and traditional cuisine. During their stay, they visited the Greek high school of Frankfurt, but they also had the chance to attend a biology lesson in German at the Grüne Schule, Botanischer Garten. During the day, they explored various museums, such as the Natural History Museum, and the Technik Museum in Sinsheim, where they watched an interesting 3D documentary about a plane that uses solar energy to fly. In their evening strolls in Frankfurt, they enjoyed the old city, the city center, the river Main, and traditional German cuisine.

21st Team Chess Tournament March 4

hree Anatolia teams of four 1st and 2nd form players each participated for the first time in the 21st team chess tournament and competed against 28 teams from Thessaloniki and Halkidiki. The students played with great enthusiasm, enjoyed the process, exhibited phenomenal collaboration skills, and, despite the delays in the games, gave their very best until the last round, ranking in 8th, 13th, and 18th place and raising our expectations for even greater success in the near future. Congratulations to all the students for their effort and to their advisor, Mario Sotiropoulo.

Company Program: Presenting “miΔen” March 31

n March 31st, 18 IBDP students, all members of the Company Program club, participated in the student Trade Fair of Thessaloniki 2023, organized by Junior Achievement Greece within the framework of the global program “Virtual Business Company Program”. Among 33 Virtual Businesses from schools in Northern Greece, and under the guidance of advisor Athina Lionta and mentor Nefeli Chatziioannidou (‘09), the students presented their “startup “miΔen–Zero Waste Food Net,” a B2B digital platform that aims to connect small agribusiness sellers and potential buyers in order to manage and distribute food products more effectively and fight food waste.

Photography Contests May 4-5

nder the guidance of alum and advisor of the Photography club Niki Gleoudi, 17 Anatolia students participated in two student photography contests and exhibits–one hosted by Anatolia and the other by the Photographic Center of Thessaloniki in collaboration with Vasiliadis School. The themes were Creative Portraits and Climate Change. Selected students’ photographs were exhibited in the entrance of Macedonia and at the Architecture Center of Thessaloniki for the public to enjoy. Congratulations to all the students that contributed with inspiring, creative, and thought-provoking photographs, and to the winners of the Anatolia contest. elcome to Güllen! An impoverished town in Switzerland awaits their very own famed billionairess Claire Zachanassian, hoping she will be their savior. Claire offers the townspeople a billion dollars – but her offer comes with a macabre proposition to “buy justice.” They must murder a resident of the town, their next mayor-to-be, and a man who seduced and abandoned her in her youth. Is the allure of wealth tempting enough for them to start questioning their decision to save one of their own? The people of Güllen are now forced to choose between moral convictions and material gain. During six December nights, Pappas Hall hosted the small village with the story that the Greek Theater Club worked on for months. According to advisor Thanasis Fotiadis, who guided the 25-member cast and crew through months of preparation, “we worked very hard on studying the play in depth, in order to understand it and perform it in the best way possible.” We thank the student actors and the crew for rising to the challenge and bringing a play that deals with many timeless issues to life.

Drama Club Presents Teenage Love Feb 17-19 & Feb 24-26

ove, heartbreak, sexuality, and identity–the spring 2023 theater production, Teenage Love, addressed it all! On two February weekends, audiences were captivated by the Drama Club’s six spectacular performances. The most impressive aspect of this year’s production was the script itself, which was created entirely by the teenage cast of the club. Following the principles of devising, a unique method of making performance that is non-text based and encourages collaboration among the entire creative team in all stages of performance-making, Anatolia students, inspired by various stimuli, such as ideas, themes, stories, music, and their very own experiences, expressed all the raw emotions of teenage love! From high school parties to the classroom, the show introduced and followed multiple characters, each one describing their personal struggle, allowing the audience to catch a glimpse of the trials and tribulations of being a teenager in the 21st century. Audiences laughed, cried, and learned about the thrill of falling in love for the first time, the pain of heartbreak, the confusion over one’s sexuality, the destructive force of body image, the search for personal identity, and more. A special thank you to the Drama Club director, Vangelis Manitakis, for his guidance and leadership, the staff, cast, and crew for their tireless efforts, and everyone in the Anatolia community who came to watch and support!

EXTRA CURRICULARS Junior Drama presents How I Met Your Mummy May 19-21

leven (11) second and third form members of the Junior Drama club performed Tom Wallinger’s comedy How I Met Your Mummy. In this witty comedy, the O. Howe Dulle Museum prepares to unveil their latest exhibition, an ancient mummy named Yo-Wut-Sup. Students hilariously transform into various eclectic characters who all want to get their hands on this mysterious man, such as a pushy reporter who hopes to prove that Yo-Wut-Sup is a hoax, a mystic intending to sneak him back to Egypt, high school students who want to use him for their low-budget horror movie, and clueless robbers hoping to steal the mummy! All the while a cowardly security guard, Melvin Trimble, attempts to stop everyone despite it being his first night on the job. Congratulations to the cast and crew members of Junior Drama for their spectacular performances that left audiences laughing to tears! PUBLIC SPEAKING - DIPLOMACY National Debate Developmental Team Tryouts Oct 16

his year, the Panhellenic Forensics Association invited three Anatolia students to the National Debate Team tryouts, held in Athens. Olga Fougala Metaxa, Aris Tsinganos, and Erifyli Vakali competed against top debaters from HAEF, Moraitis, Pierce College and other schools to prove their debating skills, their knowledge of current events, and their ability to work cooperatively and respond to constructive feedback. Out of the 31 debaters who competed, 14 were chosen to train with the national debate development team, which practices rigorously until December, when the five to represent Greece in the World Schools Debating Championship in Vietnam in July 2023 are selected. Congratulations to Olga Fougala Metaxa, who was selected for the development team, and to her coaches, Andrew Harrison and Milan Miljkovic. GOOD LUCK to Olga as she trains for the next stage in the selection process!

13th St. Catherine’s Debate Cup Nov 11-12

leven Anatolia students, comprising five teams and one solo speaker, competed in the St. Catherine’s Debate Cup in Athens. IB1 students Alexia Sextou and Ermioni Gounopoulou earned their way to the novice finals stage, where they narrowly missed the win, but not before Alexia had already secured the best overall novice speaker award. Veteran debater and student coach, Olga Fougala Metaxa, ranked an impressive 4th in overall speaker points, out of 113 speakers. An honorable mention of courage is also in order for 4th form novice debater Vassilis Zachariadis, who completed the tournament as a solo debater when his partner was unable to make the trip at the last minute. Debate coaches Milan Milkjovic and Andrew Harrison would like to extend a special congratulations to all the debaters in their first in person debate tournament in two years.

n January 13th and 14th, six teams from Anatolia College participated in the Moraitis Cup held in Athens. One of our senior debating duos – Aris Tsinganos and Erifyli Vakali – stood out by reaching the finals, which placed them in the top four teams among a total of 70! All Anatolia teams performed well and were able to navigate through a variety of topics including human rights, self-image, resource management, sports, and charity. 3rd ACG-Pierce Greek Forensics March 3-5

hirty-one (31) Anatolia students participated in the 3rd Greek Forensics Competition held at the American College of Greece– Pierce in Athens. Second to 6th formers showed their potential in the art of Debate, Original Oratory, and Oral Interpretation of Literature. Congratulations for receiving an honorable mention to Konstantina Tsigdinou, who read Freddy Germanos’ short comic stories, and Panagiotis Triantaphyllides, who urged us to see volunteering as a soul offering and not as a matter of enforcement. Congratulations to Konstantina Papatsa, for reading a passage from Nathan Hill’s The Nix and to Eva Demetriadou’s interpretation of an extract from My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrik Backman, both of which rightly captivated the audience and the judges and earned them 1st and 2nd place respectively in the high school Oral Interpretation of Literature competition out of 36 contestants. Congratulations to Konstantino Dimitraina, who was placed 1st in Original Oratory among 44 contestants. Finally, special mention must be made to the B’ Lykeion Debate team -Maria Kalpaki, Paris Ioannou, Anna Tsopela, Elisavet Lazaridou, and Marilia Boutsi-, who reached the final of the competition among 26 teams, eventually ranking second. n one of the most exciting tournaments of the year, hosted by Athens College-HAEF, thirty-five (35) Anatolia students performed comic or dramatic duets and oral interpretations of literature or honed their speaking skills in group discussion, impromptu speaking, original oratory or debate, competing against 442 participants from 21 member schools of the Panhellenic Forensics Association. Our students gave phenomenal performances and exhibited exceptional ethos, supporting and cheering each other on. Congratulations to Alexia Sextou, finalist in Original Oratory, Alexia and Mary Matsouka, both finalists in Dramatic Oral Interpretation, and Lina Louiza Michaelidou and George Koios, 3rd formers, finalists in Dramatic Duet. Congratulations to Alexia Sextou and Dimosthenis Chatziioannou for receiving honorable mention in the category of Comic Duets. Special reference should be made to one of our debate teams–Olga Fougala Metaxa, Erifyli Vakali, Alexia Sextou, Anna Filindri, and Aris Tsinganos–who, after a marathon of five preliminary rounds, made the break to the Quarter Finals among 28 teams, continued to the Semis, and debated against HAEF in the Finals of Debate for the first time after 20 years!! Olga ranked 6th, Alexia ranked 8th, and Erifyli ranked 10th on the debaters’ best speaker tab! ne Anatolia debate team consisting of 5 second formers, and 3 Impromptu speakers honed their argumentation skills in the 3rd Greek Debate and Impromptu Speaking Gymnasium Competition, hosted by Fryganiotis Schools. Our debate team (Nikoleta Kamberidou, Paraskevi Michailou, Zografina Paschali, Tsanaktsidou Kyriaki, and Nikoleta Rafailidou) ranked 5th among 10 teams, with Paraskevi ranking 7th among all debate speakers. Zoe Hariskou and Christina Tambouri ranked 7th and 10th respectively among 21 impromptu speakers, while Alexandra Panagiotidou ranked 4th and reached the semi-finals. 25th Deutsche Schule Athen MUN Oct 20-23

fter two consecutive online MUN conferences, the Deutsche Schule of Athen held its 25th DSAMUN conference in person. Fifteen students from Anatolia representing Ukraine and UK in various committees attended the three-day conference, where they debated a plethora of issues, met new people, developed leadership, research, writing, public speaking, and problem-solving skills. They came up with solutions for the topics that they were given and inculcated skills of negotiation, conflict resolution, and cooperation. In the evenings, the students enjoyed many places in Athens, such as the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, Glyfada, Thissio and Plaka to name a few. Congratulations to all Anatolia students who participated, especially to Thanos Lianas who received an Honorable Mention. We especially want to thank DSAMUN advisor Eleni Tsatsou and Tasos Gentzos for helping and guiding students in this wonderful experience in Athens.

ourteen (14) Anatolia students participated in the American School of Milan MUN. After two days of exploring the city of Milan, discussing arts, sciences, and Italian culture, they put their diplomatic skills to practice. Representing Spain and Australia, our 10th graders had worked hard, researching and preparing motions and resolutions for different committees. During the conference, they were actively engaged in discussions and debates, exhibiting commitment, persistence, and creativity in the way they lobbied about their interests as delegates of different countries. Leiden MUN 2022 Nov 10-14

wenty (20) students had the chance to visit the mesmerizing city of Leiden to participate in a three-day conference, where they either represented the delegations of Bulgaria and Cuba or served as the chairs and presidents of five committees. After two years of online conferences, heated in-person debates and fast-paced consecutive points of information were once again on the table. Our school’s first time delegates explored topics such as the implementation of cryptocurrencies, narcotics trade, COVID-19 and war implications, and more. The student officers, who closely supervised the debates during the conference, entered a whole new chapter of MUN. In their words: “Moving forward in the MUN lifeline, getting the chance to guide the delegates we once were in the role of people we used to admire was an amazing experience!” Congratulations to all the students and to their advisor Foteini Papantoniou and chaperone Tasos Gkentzos!

STMUN, DSAMUN, LEMUN, BERMUN, THIMUN, . . . ACMUN, the Model United Nations community is back on its tracks. After two years of online conferencing, students can breathe in the atmosphere of coarse words, friendly amendments, sturdy handshakes, and shy smiles. Eight (8) Anatolia students that had experienced their first diplomatic conference at the DST before COVID-19 shared their wisdom with delegates from Anatolia and other schools as Student Officers. Our 12 3rd form delegates found certain procedural matters awkward at first, but quickly grew accustomed to lobbying, making points of information, and yielding the floor. The time had come again to face the initial selfconscious exchange of looks, the physical presence of the Russian delegate next to you, the Ukrainian ally behind, and an eager admin awaiting your note for the delegate of Mexico. The delegates of Azerbaijan, Mexico, and France salute you, and Zeki Pasha, Michail Georgiev Savov and King Ferdinand Maximilian send their regards as well. We thank MUN Director Pieter Derluyn for preparing our students.

XXXI Berlin MUN Nov 15-20

ix (6) Anatolia students with advisor Panagiotis Pantzarelas and chaperone Lambrini Koufaki traveled to Berlin to participate in the MUN organized by the JFK school. Starting from the main topic of the conference, Peacebuilding, the students debated on issues such as armament and disarmament, toleration and reconciliation, preventing violent extremism, and improving policies in peacebuilding. Two of them traveled back in time and reflected on solutions regarding the 1980’s Iran-Iraq war. The students also had the opportunity to walk around a city enriched with modern history, from Alexander to Potsdamer Platz, through Unter den Linden to the iconic Bradenburger Tor, and visit various museums, from the prestigious Pergamon museum and the famous Checkpoint Charlie to the most interactive DDR museum. Despite the cold and snow, the conference itself, the vibrant city, and the comradeship that was developed among our students during this trip managed to warm them up.

7th Panhellenic MUN Greek Diplomats Dec 16-18

wenty-one (21) Anatolia students participated in the 7th Panhellenic simulation of the UN Committees, with the title “Students in the Role of Diplomats,” where they debated issues pertaining to the protection of human rights and became familiar with world-wide concerns. During the conference, they exchanged ideas and cooperated with their peers to find solutions to important issues, they defended human rights and people’s right to freedom, they developed their diplomatic and rhetorical skills, and they honed their critical and argumentative as well as their public speaking skills becoming active participants in the democratic process. Congratulations to Paris Ioannou, for receiving the best delegate award, Dimitrios Dimitriadis, for the future diplomat award, and Venetia Voulgaraki, Thanos Lianas, Danai Marianthi Lola, Athanasia Kappa, Ioanna-Danai Messaritaki, George Tampouris, Alexandra Proedrou Psychopoulou, and George Skaperdas, for receiving honorable mentions. 55th Hague MUN

his year’s Hague MUN marked the 55th year of the conference. Anatolia sent an experienced delegation of 12 students to represent the Czech Republic, who had an extraordinary amount of success in pushing their prepared agendas into the final resolutions. Konstantinos Dimitrainas, Chrysanthi Antonitsi, Nikolaos Efthymiadis, Georgia Petkou, and Anna Filindri were even credited as main submitters of their resolution, a difficult feat considering the smallest committee this year had over 120 delegates and the conference itself hosted well over 3000 delegates from all corners of the globe. Special recognition also needs to go to George Boboridis for his role as Deputy Chair of the GA1 committee and Lydia Douleti as the delegation ambassador. In addition to their high profile roles at the conference, both were also a great help in providing feedback on policy statements and draft resolutions as they came pouring in from their fellow delegates in the weeks and days leading up to the conference.

The group, led by delegation director Andrew Harrison and chaperone Elena Bampali, also had a great time exploring The Hague in the evenings. With nightly meals, strolls, and a climb to the top of the famous bell tower, the delegation made sure to have a bit of fun outside the conference as well. Topping off the trip was a 24-hour stay in Amsterdam where students strolled the city, toured the Van Gogh museum, shopped till they dropped, and shared a table of culinary adventure in the form of all you can eat sushi.

18th Anatolia College MUN Feb 10-12

fter two years of virtual conferences, the 18th Anatolia College Model United Nations marked the first in-person conference since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic! From February 10-12, almost 500 participants and advisors gathered on Anatolia’s campus to tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues, sharpen their diplomatic skills, and enhance awareness of global affairs. Delegates hailed from 26 schools located in Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, and Poland and represented 81 countries across 11 committees. The conference commenced with welcoming remarks from Anatolia’s president, Dr. Vlachos, and an inspiring speech from our Keynote Speaker, Salina Rico, the Deputy Principal Officer at the US Consulate in Thessaloniki, on her journey to becoming a diplomat and the importance of women’s empowerment.

Over the next three days, delegates debated and passed resolutions on critical topics such as the rising inflation and economic repercussions caused by the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, the rights of non-cisgender athletes in sports, the legality of human genetic modification, and eliminating honor-killings and practices. The International Court of Justice oversaw the case on the destruction of Iranian oil platforms (Islamic Republic of Iran v. United States of America), and the Historical Committee navigated the First Triumvirate and the conquest of Gaul. 44th National Selection Conference of EYP Greece Dec 16-19

n September, Anatolia’s EYP Team, consisting of Lydia Douvleti, Alexia Sextou, Elena Katsinou and Sergios Chatziavramidis, began their preparation for the committees of the 44th National Selection Conference of EYP Greece, under the guidance of their advisor Effie Varakliotou. During the December four-day conference, whose topic was «Wind of change - Youth initiatives in environmental consciousness: Working towards sustainable development of societies», they engaged in team building exercises and committee work leading to the General Assembly, in a simulation of the procedures of the European Parliament. Their diligence and hard work led to their success, as Alexia and Sergios were chosen, among 110 participants, for the 6-member national team to represent Greece at the 98th International Session of EYP at Tromsø, Norway, in March 2023. Lydia was selected as the 6th alternate. We would like to congratulate all four delegates for their dedication. They all declared their enthusiasm for the experiences they gained while collaborating with their peers in a safe and fun environment.

Youth Parliaments

European Youth Parliament 98th International Session Mar 4-12

n March 2023, a unique youth conference gathered 300 young Europeans in Tromsø, Norway. Among the 300 young Europeans participating were the six members of the Greek national delegation, chaperoned by Anatolia’s EYP club advisor, Effie Varakliotou. Anatolia students Alexia Sextou and Sergios Chatziavramidis attended the conference. The theme of the conference in Tromsø revolved around sustainability in a broad sense, with a focus on the sustainable development of international cooperation in the Arctic, the preservation and sustainable development of indigenous culture, especially Sámi representation and participation in political discourse, and the sustainable development of Arctic nature, as it is one of the areas on the planet affected by climate change the most. Congratulations to the Greek national delegation, which was distinguished in all elements of the International Session (Teambuilding, Committee Work, General Assembly), while exploring the Arctic region and sustainable solutions and innovation, exchanging ideas in the name of international cooperation, and experiencing indigenous Sámi culture.

SERVICE AS ACTION Orchestra Club Visits Special Ed Schools Dec 21

wo first-form members of the newly formed Orchestra club, Manos Tarpinidis and George Kritos, visited the 6th special ed elementary school and the 9th special ed kindergarten of Pylea, both hosted in our neighboring Agios Dimitrios facilities, to play and sing Christmas carols for the children. We thank advisor Effie Ratsou and Social Responsibilities Programs Coordinator Peggy Perakaki for this wonderful initiative!

Welfare Club Trip to Mt. Athos Apr 28-30

wenty-five (25) members of the Welfare club, traveled to Mt. Athos. Accompanied by Aristotelis Papaioannou and Aris Rogkotis, the group visited in total three monasteries and took a tour in Karyes, the seat of the clerical and secular administration of the Athonite monastic community. The students had the opportunity to venerate holy relics and icons and to admire wonderful pieces of Byzantine art. The trip also allowed students to discover the mysticism of the orthodox religion and enjoy the unspoiled nature of the Athos peninsula.

Members of the Greek Oral Interpretation club Visit the School for the Blind May 3

tudents Eva Dimitriadou, Konstantina Papatsa, Naya Karypidou, Asimina Glavina, and advisor Athina Thimi had a literary meeting with students from the School for the Blind as part of the Greek Oral Interpretation club. The teachers and students of the School spoke to our students about issues concerning the blind and visually impaired and showed them Braille in practice. Our students read the short story “Περσινή Αρραβωνιαστικιά” by Zyranna Zateli, luring the audience into the magical world of Zateli, where light meets darkness, the truth collides with lies, and life confronts death. The simple and multi-layered speech through the voices of the schoolgirls moved the audience. The discussion that followed brought together the sighted and blind teenagers who shared their thoughts, interests, dreams and need for communication. A thank you note at the end with names written in Braille will serve as a reminder of a meaningful contact….

STEM EVENTS - COMPETITIONS Anatolian Racers at the Panhellenic F1 in Schools Competition Oct 8

ongratulations to Filippo Vryza, Nasso Papasarafiano, Chrysa Karavasili, Dimitri Dimitriadi, Leonida Mitsa, and Alkiviadi Pantazi, who ranked 1st in the 11th Panhellenic F1 in Schools 2022 competition among 24 teams from all over Greece. Besides being the champions of the competition, Anatolian Racers received an array of impressive awards: Fastest Car, Best Engineering, Best Team Identity, Best Portfolio Project Management & Enterprise, Best Marketing Actions, and Best Gymnasium Team. With their success, they qualify for the Worlds Finals of F1 in Schools, where Filippos, Nassos, and Chrysa will join forces with students of the 2nd Lykeion of Xanthi. iGEM Grand Jamboree

ifteen (15) young scientists, all IBDP students, members of team Skepsis, worked for months in the Chemistry lab of the Anna Papageorgiou STEM Center and the ACT Biotechnology lab, under the guidance of Dr. Mary Kalamaki and Dr. Iro Koliakou, to design and create a nitrate filter, which aims to solve the problem of eutrophication in the waters of the Gulf of Thermaikos. Team Skepsis was the first Greek high school team to be awarded a bronze medal at the International Competition of Synthetic Biology iGEM in Paris, which hosts more than 7400 participants every year, most of them undergraduate students. Congratulations to all the students as well as to their advisors and their chaperones on the trip to Paris, Mary Kalamaki, Elena Antonakou and Diamantis Sotiriou.

The Magic of Physics - IYNT Dec 16-18

orty-five (45) Anatolia students, members of the IYNT club, and their teachers, Apostolos Michaloudis, Maria Apostolidou, and Marios Sotiropoulos, attended the annual Conference of the Hellenic Physics Society “The Magic of Physics,” where they listened to inspiring speeches by distinguished scientists at universities in Greece and abroad concerning various technological innovations related to physics, the latest observations of the scientific community about astronomical and geological phenomena, as well as broader topics, such as the relationship between science and pseudoscience. Apart from attending the academics’ presentations, they were intrigued by their peers’ experiments, and they also took part in an IYNT competition demonstration, impressing the audience with both their creativity in solving physics problems and their rhetorical skills. The group also took a festive break from the conference to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center and the National Library of Greece and to stroll among the works of great Greek painters at the brand-new National Gallery.

Thinking Like a Scientist at the 9th ACSTAC Mar 10-12

ith the aim of promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STE(A)M), Anatolia College organized the 9th Anatolia College Science and Technology Annual Conference. The focal point of this student conference was green education and the importance of linking the concept of sustainability and social responsibility with STE(A)M. In this context, workshops on green approaches and STE(A)M were organized for both students and teachers. More than 350 students from all over Greece, and 128 from Anatolia, participated in this scientific conference developing their research, critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills and presenting their work as real researchers. Applying the principles of exploratory learning, seeking information, exploring solutions and building innovative products, students had the opportunity to explore a topic of their interest and connect it with their daily lives and their community. STEM Trip to Turin Mar 22-26

hirty (30) Lykeion and IB students participated in the Clean Alp Project of the European Research Institute (ERI), which took place in the wetland of Crava Morozzo, a bird sanctuary near Turin. Initially, in collaboration with students from the school of Santorre di Santarosa, the students collected plastics from the area, and then, with the help of the members of the Clean Alp Project, they counted and recorded them. Their findings will be used in the research being carried out on the origin of plastics and microplastics in mountain areas. The group also visited the Egyptian Museum of Turin, an archaeological museum that houses one of the largest collections of ancient Egyptian relics, the Automobile Museum, one of the most famous technology and science museums in the world, and the Museum of Cinema, one of the most important of its kind in the world due to its vast collection. Thank you to trip chaperones Elsa Exintaveloni, Dora Papoutsi, and Kyriakos Arvanitis.

4th Hellenic YNT 2023 Apr 8-10

ix (6) Anatolia teams, members of the YNT club, participated in the 4th Hellenic Young Naturalists’ Tournament 2023, which took place in Thessaloniki with the participation of 15 Greek teams and 2 from Kazakhstan. Anatolia Gravitiz3, with Anny Zountsa, Eleni Tsavdaroglou, Anthi Tsikoudi, Vasiliki Avgeri, Gregory Kasapopoulos, and George Ziakas, ranked 1st and received the gold medal. Our other 4 teams–Finemen, Little Einsteins, KoroPi, and Bing Bang–ranked 4th, 6th, 7th, and 9th respectively, receiving bronze medals. Congratulations to all teams and to their advisor Apostolos Michaloudis.

CanSat

Apr 19-22

leven (11) Anatolia students took part in the Launch Event of the CanSat competition that took place in Athens. On the first day, they visited the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens to present their team to the rest of the participants and the judges and then completed the technical check. On the second day, they had to travel to Kopaida to actually launch their satellite. The team was excited to launch and then locate and recover their satellite and the measurements. The experiment was successful, and the sensors gave them the relevant data! This data was used on the third day for the presentation of their satellite’s mission, which they presented on the last day before returning home tired, yet very satisfied from this experience. Congratulations to all participants and to their mentor Iro Koliakou!

3rd Social Hackathon May 12-14

nder the auspices of the Ministry of Development and Investments, the third Social Hackathon open innovation marathon took place on May 12-14 with the support of Lidl Hellas and the A C Laskaridis Charitable Foundation, the technological and organizational support of CrowdPolicy. The Agora team, consisting of three students from Anatolia, two students from the 2nd Model Experimental High School of Thessaloniki and one from the 15th General High School of Thessaloniki, won the Junior Award by presenting a social networking platform aimed at the active participation of young people in public affairs.

Anatolia at the 15th Student Conference on Informatics Apr 26-27

ore than 25 students from the Code Gaming and the Robotics & Automations clubs, as well as from 4th form, participated successfully in this conference that takes place at Noesis and gives the opportunity to young people to present original and creative projects to their peers. Our students had a variety of projects, such as websites about the UN’s sustainable development goals, presentations about the safe use of the Internet and online bullying, smartphone applications, online games on Scratch with smart riddles–an escape room with math syllogisms–, a board game for elementary school students with vision problems, an AI model that can predict weather phenomena based on the concentration of clouds, etc. The students had the chance to answer questions about their projects, be interviewed for the web radio of the organizers, speak on Live TV, exhibit their projects, and, of course, study the projects from other schools. It was a unique experience for all. Congratulations to the students and to their advisors, Katia Daoultzoglou, Maria Karagkouni, and George Rouvas.

STEM 2nd Panhellenic Social Innovation Ideas Competition of the Skills Clubs Program May 16-17

ongratulations to students Anna Mavridou, Natalia Pavlidou, Thalia Christidou, Anastasia Xente, and Vasiliki Tziaka, and to their advisor George Rouvas for winning the first prize in the 2nd Panhellenic Social Innovation Ideas Competition of the Skills Clubs program of the British Council Greece, which was implemented with the support of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation. Their STEM project involved the design and development of a board game for visually impaired elementary school children.
