Diversion Name Traditionally a region steeped in the oral practice of handing down history through poetry and folklore, the actual origins of the name are shrouded in uncertainty. No one knows exactly when Abu Dhabi became the city’s current moniker. What is clear though is the meaning, which literally translates into ‘Father of the Gazelle’.

History There is significant archaeological evidence that parts of the region were inhabited as early as the 3rd millennium BC. In the past, historians have revealed the discoveries of an ancient irrigation system dating back to the Iron Age, the first oasis settlements, and a flourishing prehistoric trade route with Iraq and Syria, all of which would have supplemented and complemented the development of civilization in the area. The ancestors of this land traded pearls, found in rich abundance in the Persian Gulf, and copper from the Al Hajar mountains. In an era when oxygen tanks were not invented, divers wearing thick leather coverings on their hands, feet and nose plunged into the gulf, up to thirty times a day, spending a minute per dive to retrieve their treasure. By the late nineteenth century, the region saw the rise of the Al Nahyan family who currently make up the rulers of modern day Abu Dhabi. Interest in the exploration and later discoveries of oil began in the 1930s after the sharp decline of the pearling trade.

Geography, location and climate As the capital and one of the two largest cities in the UAE, Abu Dhabi lies on a T-shaped island connected to the mainland by a series of bridges. A group of about 200 islands fall under Abu Dhabi’s territory, including Sir Bani Yas, Al Futaisi and Saadiyat. With an extensive coastline of over 600 km, 2,000 parks and gardens, and approximately 67,500 square kilometers of land surface, the emirate forms approximately 80% of the UAE’s total land area. Abu Dhabi has a hot, arid climate and there are two seasons, namely winter and summer. From June through to September, the region experiences temperatures averaging 35°C. During this period, visitors can expect to witness intermittent sandstorms which drastically reduce visibility. The highest temperatures recorded during the year fall within 46°C, with the lowest around 20°C.

People The UAE has a diverse and vibrant culture with a harmonious society embracing many people from different countries. In harmony with old Arabian traditions and Islamic customs, UAE nationals are hospitable and extremely welcoming to visitors.

Important information You are requested to dress conservatively in public, particularly during religious holiday periods. In resorts and beach clubs western swimwear is acceptable at the pool, however is not welcomed in public areas. When shopping, please note that the UAE is a tax-free country and price tags indicate the final price on any particular item. Overly public displays of affection are not encouraged, although a married couple is permitted to hold hands.

Festivals National day In the UAE, 2nd December marks not only the eventual unification of the seven emirates in 1971, but also celebrates the UAE’s independence from the United Kingdom. A day of festivity throughout Abu Dhabi, visitors can experience the vibrancy and warmth that pulsates within the city; exciting face-painting activities for children, spectacular concerts, lavish cultural events, and impressive firework displays in the cool evening skies.

Ramadan The month of Ramadan is an extremely spiritual time of the year for all Muslims worldwide. It is a period of worship, self-reflection and re-establishment of their link to Allah. It marks the occasion when Allah first gave the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), the teachings of the Holy Quran. In recognition of this event, the period is regarded as a time of giving and sharing and occurs during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, lasting between 29 to 30 days. Each day, beginning at sunrise till sunset, the Muslim community observes a strict fast as well as practicing complete abstinence from other earthly pleasures. The fast is broken after sunset with a meal called Iftar. Gifts and food are exchanged not only between family members, but also distributed to the less fortunate. In the Middle East, most religious and public holidays depend on the sighting of the moon within a given month or week of the Islamic calendar (Hijri). Hence, the exact occurrence of most religious or Islamic holidays is known only 24 hours in advance. Nevertheless, the holy month of Ramadan and the ensuing three-day Eid Al Fitr are the most significant religious celebrations in Abu Dhabi. Working hours for businesses are usually shortened by two to three hours during Ramadan, while stores and shops remain closed from 1.00 pm until after Iftar. Most shops and malls, however, remain open until well past midnight during this period. During the holy month of Ramadan, you will find the facilities within the resort in terms of restaurants and bars, either closed or with limited operating timings. Please contact the Guest Service Centre.

Eid Al-Fitr Meaning ‘breaking the fast’, this festival immediately follows the end of Ramadan. Beginning with an obligatory prayer known as salaat, more donations are given to the poor as celebrations are observed throughout the Emirate. The event is also marked in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai by a series of spectacular concerts given by some of the best-known performers in the Arab world, as well as a selection of cultural and artistic delights for guests to enjoy.

Eid-Al-Adha Known as the Festival of Sacrifice and held after the Hajj, Eid-Al-Adha is an important event in the Muslim community. The period marks the Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) obedience to Allah and is a time for giving and sharing. Visitors to the region can experience the events that complement the occasion including sampling traditional Arabic cuisine, culture and heritage.

Liwa date festival An exciting annual insight into the precious fruit of Abu Dhabi, the Liwa Date Festival was established in 2004 to showcase the traditions of the Emirati’s rich heritage. Competitors from across the emirate, known for their passion for dates, submit their entries into the annual competition. On average, over 3,000 competitors attend and are then judged by the quality, taste and size of their fruits over a ten-day competition. Visitors to the event are not only invited to sample a dazzling array of produce but can also participate in many of the cultural activities or purchase a delightful range of Arabian arts and crafts.

Al Dhafra festival The month of December allows visitors to experience the beauty of the authentic Asayel and Majahim camels and learn about the natural origins and history of the desert-dwelling locals and their ancient traditions at the annual Al Dhafra festival. Held in the Madinat Zayed region of Abu Dhabi, just a 45-minute drive from the resort, guests may discover a world of intriguing pleasures from traditional souks displaying souvenirs from the region to stimulating falcon competitions. It is an adventure not easily forgotten.

A survival guide to the heat Dehydration Humans can suffer from both water and salt dehydration because we sweat water and salt. For every litre of sweat, we lose an average of two to three grams of salt.

Water deficiency The first signs of water deficiency are panting and faintness. Loss of water causes a thickening of the blood. As a consequence, blood circulation and heart rate increase. In an extreme case, if blood can’t get to the heart fast enough this results in a circulatory collapse or heart stroke. Normally we should drink at least two liters of water daily but in the hot weather, we should drink more even if we do not feel thirsty. If you think you are suffering from water deficiency, seek medical help and get to a cooler place.

Salt deficiency Symptoms of salt deficiency include cramps, fatigue and faintness. Salt forms a vital part of the body’s composition and without the right amount of exchangeable salt in the body, cells and blood cannot function properly. Salt deficiency in hot weather can lead to a heat-stroke. To prevent this, doctors recommend sprinkling extra salt on food. Very active people should also drink salt solutions of a gram of salt to a litre of water. If you are suffering from salt deficiency, seek medical help and move to a cooler place.

How people react to heat The human body copes with heat by means of vasodilation and by sweating. Blood vessels expand, allowing more blood to be diverted from the centre of the body to the skin, cooling the body down. The female body tends to be slightly better at vasodilation, while the male body is slightly better at sweating.
