01. THE BUTTERFLY LIVING

Boston, MA

The Butterfly aims to be the choice of housing for the the studetns of Boston, as it not only provides variety in unit types, but the low rise density of 9 interconnected buildings creates an open welcoming environment that provokes social interaction, hence, the Butterfly Effect . Honing on the concept coined by Herman Hertzbeger, the design resembles an “Incomplete Skeleton”, that the establishment isn’t complete without its occupants. The design emobies that not only the buildings but corridors and sidewalks should act as a catlayst for human behvaior.

02. EGLESTON PUBLIC LIBRARY

Roxbury, MA 2025

IN COLLABORATION WITH OLIVIA DARRAH

To redesign the Egleston Square Branch of the Boston Public Library, my teammate and I researched different ways the programme and amenities could play a bigger role in serving the community of Roxbury. From the exterior, the abundant seating immersed in nature along the organic form of the building and wooden panes provokes a calming essence. The angle of the panes allows for sunlight to peer through the large windows, but not intensly. The space experienced is everchanging due to its free plan programming while the roof is supported with the exposed wood rafters that span along the slope of the aluminum roof.

Providing access and resources to a “Bike Library”, collaborative tech zones, immersive and exciting kid-friendly areas, while surrounded by large windowsand wooden rafters, the citizen is encourgaed to progress to the future. Further exemplified by the free and open nature of the plan, making it adjustable to changes in response to the needs of the community.

With a balcony overlooking the shelves and collaborative zones below, this space aims to serve as a quieter and private environment, while not entirely disconnected. Libraries are meant to serve the community beyond its tangible resources, but to act as a space where learning, collaboration, and congregation is always welcome. As shown, the floor is divided between circulation that doubles as collabortative programming, and individual rooms intended for learning for all ages.

03. THE DIAGOON DWELLINGS - PRECEDENT

Delft, The Netherlands

PRECEDENT ANALYSIS

The Diagoon Dwellings, located in Delft, Netherlands, about an hour outside of Amsterdam, serve as Herman Hertzberger’s interpretation of ideal housing for an average family, challenging the cookie-cutter Dutch apartment buildings in the city. He believed that a sense of polyvalence and incompletion is necessary when designing homes, and that the space should be interpreted and occupied by the family as they see fit. By employing natural lighting and the Raum Plan tactic, Hertzberger devised a master plan of dwellings that would not only house families but also build communities.
