One goal and one goal only
BY JASON SCHULTE SENTINELSPORTS48@GMAIL.COM
The Amery football team faced a failure scenario again in 2024: A week nine win would have secured the Warriors a spot in the playoffs.
Last year, Somerset defeated Amery 2410, extending the playoff drought to eight years. Amery finished 2-5 in the conference and 3-6 overall.
“Last season was another season where the program took a step in the right direction, and ended as the previous three had,” Amery coach Ryan Humpal said. “Unfortunately, (a playoff berth) did not happen once again, but the program got better as a whole.
“The main goal for the season is to get back into the playoffs, which would be the first time since 2017, with the new playoff qualifying format, where all nine games matter versus just the conference record
in previous years. The new format gives teams in a tough conference another avenue into the playoffs. If this format had been used the last three seasons, we would have been in the playoffs. So hopefully we can make that happen this season; I know the school and community have been waiting anxiously for this to happen.”
Nine letterwinners return, headlined by Jacob Maxon and Keaton Wollan. Keaton was a first-team all-conference selection at linebacker, while Maxon earned firstteam honors at punter and kicker. Maxon was the team’s quarterback last year and finished with 750 yards passing and nine touchdowns along with the team’s leading rusher (755).
“Strengths for the season will be our overall team speed; we are athletic in many positions and will look to use our speed and athleticism to win games,” Humpal continued.

The other letterwinners are Cody Hatch, Austin Hanson, Colton Waterman, Vante Allen, Valdin Anderson, Owen Gould, and Sam Streich.
“These young men will be joined on Friday nights by many sophomores and juniors getting their first varsity minutes,” Humpal continued. “It is a great mix of athletes and personalities to make for a great season.”
Baldwin-Woodville is the conference champion and the Division 4 State Runner-Up.
“They lost many key pieces, but they can always fill the holes and compete hard on Friday nights,” Humpal concluded. “The team to look out for this season might be Ellsworth; they will be good up front and have some real nice athletes.”
Fact: Maxon averaged over 39 yards a punt last year, while he was 13-for-16 on extra points and five-for-six on field goals.

Stepping on the court with
BY JASON SCHULTE SENTINELSPORTS48@GMAIL.COM
2024 was a year of growth and development for the Amery volleyball team.
Coach Lisa Markee hopes those lessons will pay off this year.
“I am looking forward to seeing what this team can do,” she said. “We have several returning members from last season. This season, we get to build on last season as we step out on the court with more experience and confidence, bringing energy, fun, and competition to the court.”
The Warriors went winless in conference action and 2-19 overall. Cameron defeated Amery in the first round of the regional.
Peyton Hanson was the lone all-conference selection, earning honorable mention honors. She graduated along with Hailey Marciniak, Ali Hoffman, and Katelin Graski.
Amery returns nine players who all had some varsity court time last season: Kylie
Meyer, Jenna Van Someren, Kallie Anderson, Emily Peck, Sophia Trandum, Krista Markee, Kaleigh Wilson, Miley Brotzel, and Josie Maxon.
Brotzel, Meyer, and Wilson were three of the top four percentage servers. Markee, Brotzel, and Wilson had three of the top four service aces, Brotzel and Van Someren were the team’s top two passers, while Wilson was the team’s top blocker and in the top two in kill efficiency.
Besides those returners, Markee is also high on the team’s junior varsity players.
“We have a strong junior varsity group of players we will be looking to give some opportunities to during the season to get some varsity experience,” she continued.
“They have the potential to make an impact on our court either physically or as a daily reminder and push that there is another player right on the heels of our starters to earn their spot.”
Osceola and St. Croix Central shared the conference title, but both were hit hard by graduations.
“On the court, we want to play to our full potential for the whole match each night,” Markee said. “Volleyball is a game of momentum as well as skill, so getting down or second-guessing ourselves can cause a big point swing.
“This group of girls has the potential to bring a lot of energy and opportunities to the court each night as long as we take care of our side. We will be focusing on executing the process for both skills and the mental components we need to be intentional about to give us the winning outcome we are working for.”
Fact: Both of Amery’s wins came in quadrangular or invitationals last year. The Spooner win came in the McDonell Central Quadrangular, while Amery defeated Washburn in the Cumberland Invitational.

Amery Boys Soccer Team
BY JASON SCHULTE SENTINELSPORTS48@GMAIL.COM
The focus for the Amery boys’ soccer team this year is purpose and perfection.
“We will do our best to have purpose in everything we say and do – passing, shooting, communicating, moving, etc.,” coach Nick Stewart explained. “We will also strive for perfection. Because perfection is not attainable, we will always be striving to be better, to be the best versions of ourselves as players and students.
“The goal is to have this mindset both on the field and in the classroom.”
Stewart inherits a team that went 2-7-1 in the conference and 5-8-2 overall. Amery fell to Cumberland in the first round of the regional.
“Being this will be my first year as coach, I will be leaning on the seniors – Chris Wiese, Carter Sorenson, and Leithan Aiken-Duncan – to really help step up and lead by example,” he said. “In addition to these seniors, Jacob Stauner and Weston Hosking also bring quite a bit of experience they can share with the new players as well.”
The Warriors will be replacing eight seniors from last year’s team, including all-conference selections Sean Evenson and Benito Widiker. Sophomore Parker Hart is replacing Evenson as the goalkeeper and is off to a solid start, posting two wins in the team’s first two games as of September 3.
The new coach is also high on the three freshmen — Zachary Hosking, Mateo Aizpurua, and Miles Hartman — to contribute as well.

“My goal for them is not only to learn and perfect the fundamentals of soccer but also to learn from the experienced players and grow throughout the season,” he said. “…This team has a lot of experience and talent, so I’m excited to see what this season brings.”
Somerset won the conference title by three games over Altoona. They are threetime conference champions.
Fact: The Warriors ended the 2024 season on a high note, posting four wins in their last six games, after starting the season 1-6-2.

Another year of growth and development
BY JASON SCHULTE SENTINELSPORTS48@GMAIL.COM
Last year’s Amery girls’ golf roster was primarily comprised of freshmen and sophomores.
The results showed that: an eighth-place finish in the conference and a sixth-place finish in the regional.
All those underclassmen are back for another year, which has coach Justin Schuh optimistic about them taking the next step.
“Our goal is to finish in the top half of the conference, and I’m most looking forward to watching the girls continue to develop their skills over the season,” he said.
“Many of them have put in countless hours on the course playing and practicing, so it will be exciting to see how their dedication translates into both individual and team improvement.”
Macie Warner, Olivia Sattre, Kennedy Miller, Emma Olson, and Emmy Yeske are returning letterwinners. Warner is off to a solid start, posting two top 10 finishes in conference meets already this season.
Schuh is also high on Presley Sarsland and Lilly Powell to contribute this season.
“Both have made noticeable progress in their games and could earn sports on the varsity roster this season,” he said.
Prescott is the conference champion who will be playing in Division 1 come postseason, along with Altoona, who took second in the conference last year.
“Additional team goals include giving maximum effort during every practice to drive improvement, representing women’s golf in our community with pride, and supporting teammates by celebrating successes and staying positive in challenging moments,” Schuh concluded.
Fact: Miller was the lone Warrior to grab a point in the all-conference standings last year.

Amery Cross Country Team
A new girls team; boys looking to climb the ladder
BY JASON SCHULTE SENTINELSPORTS48@GMAIL.COM
This year’s Amery girls’ cross country team is going to look a lot different than the previous years.
After three consecutive years of top-four finishes at the sectional meet, the Warriors slipped to seventh in 2024. Four of its top seven runners were seniors, and they were unable to replace them, meaning in most meets this season, they will field an incomplete team.
“We need one more girl,” coach Race Rolling said, as only four girls are out. “We are hoping to field a conference and sectional individual champion on the girls’ side.” That would be Macie Boe, who had a freshman season to remember. She took
second in the conference, fourth in the sectionals, and 14th in the state.
“Macie is ready to make a run for the podium this year,” Rolling continued.
The other returners are Anna Williamson, Virginia Livingston, and Audrey Medina.
Amery said goodbye to Natasha Tiry, Anna Gould, Annalea Deems, and Ani Abraham. Tiry and Gould placed in the top 12 at the conference meet.
St. Croix Central is the conference champion, while Osceola was second, and Amery took third. The Panthers return five of their top seven runners who ran at the state meet.
On the boys’ side, the entire team that scored at the conference and sectional meet returns. Last year, Amery took seventh in
the conference meet and 12th in the sectional meet.
“We are hoping to be top five in conference for boys,” Rolling added.
David Swenson is the senior leader, followed by Elijah Ivey, Brandon Teigen, Liam Zinn, and Miles Ivey. Both Iveys and Zinn earned letters.
“Elijah Ivey has shown dedication in bringing other athletes to the summer trainings,” Rolling added. “I can’t wait to see what David brings this season.”
Osceola is the conference and sectional champion. They have qualified for the state meet for nine consecutive years.
Fact: Boe cracked the under-19-minute mark at the sectional meet, finishing with a time of 18 minutes, 51 seconds.

Strong singles crew to lead the way
BY JASON SCHULTE SENTINELSPORTS48@GMAIL.COM
The good news for Amery girls’ tennis coach Tanya Julson and followers: Three of the four primary singles players return this year.
The bad news: All three doubles teams will look completely different than last year, thanks to graduations. As for the singles, Faith Halverson, Charlotte Stewart, and Myka McCarty are back. Halverson shone as a freshman at No. 1 singles, placing second at the conference tournament and advancing to the sectionals. McCarty also earned a sectional berth.
Addie Gould is the lone returning doubles player. She was part of the conference champion at No. 3 with the graduation of Olivia Chavez. New players are ready to step in and fill the void, Julson said.
“Mia Byrnes and Ella Chute both stepped up and helped the varsity team last year when we were short,” Julson explained. “Those two won varsity matches for us. Ella even took third place at the conference tournament at
No. 4 singles. Other first-year varsity players are Cali Widiker, Kate Moskal, Jolee Marquand, and Reese Anderson.
“This is a hardworking group of players who are excited to learn and improve.”
Besides Chavez, the departures include Lyla Stone (No. 3 singles), Marissa Fisk and Kelly Fern (No. 1 doubles), and Sala Hayes (No. 2 doubles).
Those seniors helped the Warriors claim the subsectional title and a fourth-place finish in the sectional.
“It will be a bit of a rebuilding year with players moving up positions in the lineup, as well as half the team being new to the varsity,” Julson concluded.
“…This team’s strength is effort and perseverance. They have good footwork and hustle on the court. They are full of positive energy and determination. It will be fun to watch them grow and improve this season.”
Fact: Amery will host a subsectional October 6, which will consist of Baldwin-Woodville, Barron, Bloomer, Ellsworth, Mondovi, Osceola, Rice Lake, and Unity/Luck.

BY JASON SCHULTE SENTINELSPORTS48@GMAIL.COM
The Prairie Farm/Clayton girls’ golf team is in its first year of existence.
The Bearcats are members of the Clover-Croix Conference, meaning they will face schools such as Bloomer, Colfax/Elk Mound, Mondovi, Osseo-Fairchild, and Stanley-Boyd.
“The goals for this season are to have fun while learning the game of golf and making improvements on key aspects of the game,” coach Wendy Dallmann said.
Dallman has four seniors and one junior between the two schools: Spender Roemhild, Addy Lentz, and Ava Hundley from Prairie Farm, while Emily Zemke and Alexandra Borzova

are from Clayton. Borzova is the lone junior.
In three conference meets already this year, the Bearcats have finished fifth in each one (ahead of Mondovi), with Borzova having the lowest score in all three of them.
Colfax/Elk Mound is the favorite in the conference.
“They have a ton of experience,” Dallman said. Their top golfer is Belle Kongshaug, who has qualified for the Division 2 State Tournament the last three years and has finished second, first, and first in each of those three years.
Fact: The Bearcats’ home conference meet is September 18 at Clear Lake Golf Course.

Clayton Football Team
Seated L to R: Managers Cashton Gilbertson, Bailey
BY JASON SCHULTE SENTINELSPORTS48@GMAIL.COM
The Clayton football team is on a streak of four straight winning seasons.
With the amount of returning talent, a fifth straight winning season looks excellent.
“We bring back some influential players,” coach Richard Croes said. “Dayne Mumm was an all-region quarterback last year and will lead our offense again this year. Defensively, we bring back Cain Casarez, who was voted first team all-conference on the defensive line and second team all-conference on the offensive line last year.
“Defensively, we bring back two juniors who led our team in interceptions last year,
Brody Curtis and Owen Anderson. Both will be key members.”
Mumm threw for nearly 850 yards passing, while running for nearly 1,200 yards and 23 touchdowns from a team that went 7-3 in 2024 and lost to Northwood/Solon Springs in the 8-man Level 2 playoff.
The Bears did lose some key pieces to graduation, including Landon King and Alex Schradle. Schradle finished with over 100 total tackles.
“We are in a spot many teams deal with, new people having to step up and fill a role,” Croes continued. “With that being said, we have had some nice competitions at a couple of positions, and it has been bringing out the best in us.
“There has been an attitude of excellence at practice, and it is due to our leaders step-
ping up, and the rest of the team wanting to continue the success of Clayton football.”
A notable game for the Bears this season is its final regular-season one: October 10 against the 8-man state champion Owen-Withee.
“Every member of this team is working towards continuing the success Clayton football has had,” Croes concluded. “Our goal every day, though, is to take care of that day. Be the best you can be and learn. If we can have a great practice day after day, the wins will come and so will the larger goals.”
Fact: In six of Clayton’s seven wins last year, they averaged over 47 points a game.

Clayton Volleyball Team
Continuing to build on what
was previously started
BY JASON SCHULTE SENTINELSPORTS48@GMAIL.COM
The Clayton volleyball team went 6-18 during the 2024 regular season.

While the regular season didn’t go as hoped, the postseason showed glimpses as the Bears pulled out a five-set road win over New Auburn in the first round of the regional before pushing Prairie Farm to five sets in the regional final and losing in a nailbiter.
“Our goals for this season are to continue building on what we have started,” coach

Monday-Friday at 8:10 a.m. and 12:05 p.m.
Jessica King explained. “We plan to be competitive and will challenge ourselves and others with every opportunity we are given.”
Five letterwinners return, headlined by second team selections senior Isabelle Schradle and junior Addyson King. The other three are senior Alexis Lange, junior Kyleigh Luoma, and Macy Grosskreutz.
“Starters will include a variety of returners and new incoming student athletes,” King continued.
Prairie Farm and Turtle Lake were the conference champions, with Clayton
handing Prairie Farm one of its conference losses.
“We have a very competitive conference, which is always very fun to compete in,” King concluded. “The challenges we face will prepare us for a postseason run.”
Fact: While some Clayton sports will begin co-oping with Prairie Farm this year, this is the final year of Clayton volleyball.

Prairie Farm/Clayton Cross Country Team
Girls’ harriers seeking another state berth
BY JASON SCHULTE SENTINELSPORTS48@GMAIL.COM
As the co-op between Prairie Farm and Clayton for sports begins in its first year, Clayton finds itself in a good spot when it comes to cross country.
The Prairie Farm girls’ team qualified for the Division 3 state meet last year thanks to a second-place finish at the sectional meet.
Prairie Farm returns three runners who ran at the state meet: Kira Dunn, Anastasia Nedland, and Ashlyn Olson.
Dunn has posted two top five finishes in the meets she has run this season, while Nedland and Olson have been the second and third runners so far. Freshman Avery Lentz has had her time count in all three meets this season as of September 8. Coach Megan Kerr will also rely on Josie Tanner, Willa Gitzen, and Krys Jacobson.
Meanwhile, the boys finished 13th at the sectional meet and returned three runners from that meet in Maxim Severson, Sven Briggs, and Jon Wendt. Brett Feather has been the top runner in early action along with Briggs and Severson.
Fact: Last year’s state berth was the first in school history for either the boys or girls’ teams.

New coach hoping to turn around fortunes for Clear Lake football
BY JASON SCHULTE SENTINELSPORTS48@GMAIL.COM
The Clear Lake football team has won only 11 games in the last four years.
It’s a streak new coach, Neil Larson, is hoping to reverse in the program’s final year in the Dunn-St. Croix conference before moving down to 8-man football.

“Being my first year as coach, I would say our team is developing quickly,” he said. “We definitely don’t have the numbers I would hope for, but we will get there. I am most looking forward to teaching and watching these players grow and develop not only football skills but just life skills.”
Clear Lake finished the 2024 season 1-6 in the conference and 2-7 overall. Four players were named all-conference, with three of them returning: Wyatt Lundgren, Kasey Becker, and Caleb Arcand.
Larson likes Becker, along with Lane Prusak, Anthony Holloman, and Aiden Mikulich, to be leaders for the team this season.
Prusak delivered in the team’s only win so far, against Royall August 22, as he rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown. Holloman is the team’s leading rusher in three games, along with being second in total tackles (17.5) behind Becker’s 22.5.
Larson is also high on Jack Petersen, who is back for his senior year, and freshman Bennett Buhr as newcomers. As for conference play, even though Spring Valley is the conference champion, Boyceville is the favorite this year. The Bulldogs advanced all the way to the Division 7 State semifinals before losing to Edgar.
Fact: In its five previous years in the Dunn-St. Croix, Clear Lake has beaten Colfax all five years. The other conference wins have been over Turtle Lake (twice), Elmwood/Plum City (twice), and Cadott.

New conference means new expectations
BY JASON SCHULTE SENTINELSPORTS48@GMAIL.COM
The significant change for the Clear Lake volleyball team in 2025 is moving from the Lakeland–Central conference to the DunnSt. Croix conference.
Having nine returning players helps to make a move like that.
“Our goal for this season is to play an exciting style of volleyball, make an impact in our new conference by winning a championship,” said coach Mark Vold.
Clear Lake finished 7-3 in conference action last year and 11-10 overall, losing to Webster in the Regional Final. Among the departures were conference player of the year Kaitlynn Tellijohn.
Back for another year are all-conference selections right side Abby Tibbetts, outside hitter Alissa Burbach and libero Brena Dimler, in addition to middle blockers Sophia Tellijohn, Addie Kobernick, and setter Ayla Monson.
Vold also projects sophomore Taryn Niles as a key contributor to the rotation.
Durand won the conference title in 2024 by two games over Plum City/Elmwood.
Fact: Clear Lake has only four home matches this season, all conference games: September 23 (Durand-Arkansaw), September 30 (Glenwood City), October 7 (Spring Valley) and October 14 (Chetek-Weyerhaeuser).

The Clear Lake boys’ cross country team finished sixth in the conference meet and ninth in the regional meet in 2024.
The lineup in both meets consisted entirely of seniors, led by Elijah Perry and Will Brantner. The Warriors will also be saying goodbye to Trevor Gilbertson, Isaac Anderson, Paul Wagner, Evan Cain, and Reed Carlson.
In their place are freshmen Malachi Perry, Oliver Wood, Axel Beestman, and sophomores Trent Abramczak, Magnum Moggo, and Charles Schmidt.
The Warriors are also moving to a new conference, leaving the Lakeland and going
to the Dunn-St. Croix. The conference meet is on October 16 in Spring Valley. Glenwood City is the conference champion and returns three of its top four runners from the conference meet, while Durand was second and returns its top three runners.
Meanwhile, the girls didn’t field a complete score at the conference and sectional meet. Unlike the boys, they do have returners, as Violet Wood and Addy Warner posted top-20 finishes at the conference meet, while Wood earned a top-30 finish at the sectional meet.
The pair, along with Lily Wood, are returning letterwinners for the girls’ team.
In addition, freshmen Kiley Munson and Kami Cress and junior Jade Juedes look to round out the lineup.
“We have a very young, inexperienced team starting the year, but highly motivated,” said coach Kristi Niles, speaking of both squads. “It’ll be a definite growing cross country season.”
Boyceville cruised to the conference title as all five runners who scored in the conference meet are back. Durand was second.
Fact: Clear Lake’s only home meet is October 7, in which it hosts Birchwood, Boyceville, Bruce, Elmwood/Plum City, Flambeau, Glenwood City, Grantsburg, Prairie Farm, Shell Lake, Siren, Turtle Lake, Unity, Webster, and Winter.
