PERFORMING ARTS CENTER INAUGURATION Saturday, March 3rd, 2018 at six o’clock in the afternoon, marked another milestone for the American School Eagles. After years of dreaming of an art and musical center for students, staff and community, the dream became a reality. This was the result of TEAM WORK, an effort by many who planned, collaborated and worked together to make this project the amazing Performing Arts Center that it is today.
SPECIAL THANKS AND RECOGNITION Leadership is a skill and a talent. All our gratitude and admiration goes to our Superintendent, Mrs. Liliana Jenkins, who worked on a daily basis with a team of collaborators, ensuring the quality of the project as well as making sure it provides the academic tools and meets the requirements for our students’ success. In the Center’s inauguration ceremony Mrs. Jenkins addressed the audience and thanked the following people on behalf of all past and future generations of Eagles. “ . . . all the Board Presidents who have worked really hard, by first supporting AST’s Arts and Music academic program, and then, by providing more space for it to grow. I would like to especially thank Mr. Dennis Figueroa, Mrs. Reina Irene Mejía and Mr. José Fco. Quiñónez. For years we have been blessed to be guided by our Board Members who voluntarily give of their valuable time and skills to our school; tonight I want to recognize two outstanding board members Mr. David Tipping and Colonel Steve Stanley. Thank you!For many months a group of volunteers would meet on a weekly basis to guide the construction efforts. A huge thank you to our Constrution Committee: José Castillo, Rafael Inestroza, Pedro Díaz, José Luis Moncada, Roberto Aviles, Luis Caballero, José Fco. Quiñonez, Beatriz Cotrina, and Ingeniero Oyuela To all of you I say: all the late meetings, all the discussions, and all the research – it was all worth it.
I also glow with EAGLE PRIDE when I thank and congratulate our Designing Architect, alumnus (Class of 1990) Luis Casco. Thank you, Luis! To our building contractor Mr. Sherwood Bonilla and subcontractors Mr. Jaime Pineda, Mr. Mauricio Ferrari, Mr. Antonio Kafati and Mr.Ricardo Reina, as well as to our construction supervisors Mr. Alex Bendeck and Mr. Andrés Rishmawi, thank you all for your time and dedication to this project. Today we will enjoy a wonderful concert thanks to the acoustic skills, knowledge and expertise of consultants Gary Siebein and Onías Peralta. We are so in debt to you. Thank you for your long hours of hard work and devotion to the project. Stage and ambience illumination was also guided by our consultant and parent Estiven Simón. Please join me in applaudingtheir efforts. Last, but of course NOT LEAST to our donors, especially to our major donor FICOHSA, Mr. Javier Atala. Thank you for always believing in AST. We thank YOU, FICOHSA and the ATALA family. Today we have with us Honduran renowned artist Darío Rivera. His sculpture TIEMPO Y ESPACIO is displayed in our main lobby. Thank you Darío for touching our hearts and soul through art. We also thank our parents, students, staff, and friends of our school who participated in the DONATE A SEAT CAMPAIGN. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to imagine and bring art and culture to our school.” – Liliana Jenkins
CONSTRUCTION The dream started back in August 2013 when the General Assembly approved the 5 year MASTER PLAN presented by Board Member David Tipping. This plan included the Performing Arts Center as the ďŹ nal project. The plan was approved by all stakeholders, and for several years our campus has been blessed with the physical transformation of many buildings which would sustain knowledge for new Eagle generations. For the ďŹ nal project in 2016, a group of skilled and talented parents joined the Construction Committee and dedicated hours, days and months of hard work to this new venue. Consultants were hired. An alumnus won the design bidding, and Constructora Wallace won the private bid. A lot of hard work and support from members of two boards followed. AST administrators and parents worked hard to make this dream a reality.
SOFT OPENING AND SNEAK PEEK SOIRÉE Who would be the first to see this new venue? Our students of course! Newly hired, Theatre Manager Mrs. Michelle Schneider, coordinated the student-led presentations and tours of this magnificent building. Our students’ wide open eyes and gasps were proof and satisfaction enough of a job well done. A new world had opened right in front of them. Our AST Honor Choir and Elementary Honor Choir also had an evening of wonderful musical selections and a SNEAK PEEK of our new Performing Arts Center on Tuesday February 27th. After a great concert, our guests tasted some appetizers and desserts catered by our Dining Hall. This was the first event ever in our new Performing Arts Center. Special thanks to Ms. Calyanne Crouch for organizing this great event and to all our great musicians!
THEATRE MANAGER - MICHELLE SCHNEIDER Michelle Schneider is the Manager of our new Performing Arts Center. She was born in Chicago, Illinois. Michelle lived all her childhood and adolescence in Guatemala City where she graduated from the American School of Guatemala. She was accepted to the University of Florida and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Food & Resource Economics, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a Major in Management. As a young girl, she found a passion in the performing arts especially in tap, jazz, and theater; thereby becoming, as a college student, a certified instructor, successful teacher and performer. After several years of training and teaching dance, she married Honduran and AST alumnus Lito Castillo (’01) and they move to Honduras to start a family. Michelle keeps tapping in the artistic world with her dance academy, and is the instructor for Tap & Jazz classes in AST’s extracurricular program. In October 2017 the school hired Michelle as the Performing Arts Center Manager. Her experience, talent and love for the arts make her stand out from other people. We are very happy that Michelle is part of our AST family and we wish her the best in this new adventure.
PERFORMING ARTS CENTER INAUGURAL GALA Our Inaugural Gala assembled a group of 350 guests – all collaborators and donors of the Center. This gala marked the official opening of our Performing Arts Center. The school had a special gift for all its special guests – a concert by Honduran mezzo-soprano Melina Pineda and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tegucigalpa (OST). Melina’s talented voice delighted the audience with a taste of opera as well as acclaimed music from popular Broadway shows. The evening began with a welcoming speech from our Superintendent Mrs. Liliana Jenkins followed by words by Mrs. Reina Irene Mejía, our Board President. Mrs. Jenkins and Mrs. Mejía proceeded to officially inaugurate the center by cutting the ribbon together with major donor, Ficohsa’s Vice President Mr. Javier Atala and Mr. Dennis Figueroa, former Board President. The concert was followed with some fine hors d’oeuvres and wine in the Center’s lobby.

PERFORMING ARTS CENTER SCULPTURE The Performing Arts Center Sculpture was part of Ficohsa’s donation, as part of their HECHO EN CASA campaign. This s culpture was created by Honduran Artist Darío Rivera specifically for the Center’s lobby. The sculpture’s name is “TIEMPO Y ESPACIO”.
