Self-Esteem Conference Ms. Fadya Kafati, Pre School and 1st grade counselor, gave a lecture called ‘‘¡Como ayudar a los hijos a tener una buena autoestima!’’ to all first grade parents. It was a huge success and parents were truly inspired. As it is customary, the talk followed by snacks catered by our Dining Hall. Special thanks to Ms. Nena Alvarado (Character Education Coordinator) for organizing these great opportunities for parental development and growth.
1st Grade Spider Web S.T.E.A.M First grade students had a STEAM (SCIENE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART and MATH) Spider Web Challenge which is a hands-on activity where they practice using the steps of the engineering process. For this project the students had to design a web while using a metal clothes hanger, 15 ft of string and 6 in. of masking tape. Finally, they had to test the web by dropping a stapler from a distance of 1 meter and it must not break or get untied in any area. All of our 1st graders did a fantastic job!

LEAD Conference This year’s Lead Conference (Sponsored by the NASSP, the National Association of Secondary School Principals) took place in Chicago, Illinois. AST students led by Mr. Carlos Corrales (Activities Coordinator / STUCO Advisor) and Mrs. Vicky Díaz (Advancement Director) attended several workshops on leadership and social responsibility at this conference that offers experiential leadership skills development to student members of the National Honors Society (NHS), and the National Student Council. They also enjoyed KEYNOTE SPEAKERS such as Keith Hawkins, Harriet Turk and Omékongo Dibinga. At Lead, students also sharpen skills to improve their school culture and community while networking with people from around the world. STUCO Soccer Pep Rally Last Monday STUCO organized a one of a kind Pep Rally to honor, motivate and show support to our AASCA (Varsity) soccer teams before they left for the Central American tournament held in San JosĂŠ, Costa Rica. The MS/HS student body had a lot of fun and laughs with the creative human size Monopoly where each grade battled against each other in different contests and challenges. Our sophomores were the champions and they won a Pizza Party lunch sponsored by STUCO. Teachers and administrators joined in the fun, as they wished our teams farewell and good luck. Thank you STUCO for promoting these events that support our student -athletes and promote school spirit!

AASCA Soccer Tournament Our AASCA soccer teams travelled to San José, Costa Rica last week to represent AST in this prestigious tournament. After months (and years) of training and strong commitment, our boys’ team (EAGLES) was crowned CHAMPIONS after winning a difficult final match against the Trojans from EAS (Escuela Americana de El Salvador). Our girls’ team finished in First Place Silver showing great courage and putting forth extraordinary effort. It has been hard for our girls, but they will always be remembered as the “hexacampeonas”. AASCA boys dedicated this championship win to former Athletic Director Ela Hernández. All her hard work and years of guidance was very much appreciated by the team.

Alumni Corner JACKIE SMITH (85’) Alumna Jackie Smith graduated from her Alma Mater, AST, in 1985. She went on to Bentley University where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing in 1989. Following her passion for continuous studies she continued on to Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, New Jersey where she earned her Master’s degree in Positive Psychology. She graduated Summa Cum Laude and was teacher's assistant during her 2 year of graduate studies. Since she was little she found a passion in writing, illustrating, and inspiring others. In 2004, Jackie decided to enroll in the University of Miami Coaching Program where she became a Certified Life Coach, by the International Coaching Federation. Two years later, she began a career in motivational speaking where she has shared the stage, radio show and has a monthly column with former CNN news anchor and motivational leader, Ismael Cala. In November 30, 2017 she published her book Ready, Set Go! with co-author Brian Tracy, and they joined a select group by reaching best-seller status on Amazon.com, reaching as high as #15 in 'Direct Marketing and #73 in the 'Sales and Selling category in the day of release giving her one of the best gifts of her life.
