A reminder to parents, check and sign the Assignment Book each night. This communication system is very important for gr. 2-5. In Power School click on one of your child’s grades if you want to see the assignments, comments, teacher’s e mail or visit the Google site. All teachers post the weekly newsletter and announcements on their sites early Monday mornings. Teachers have decided that during summer they would like students to read one book in English and one book in Spanish. Parents will order and purchase Summer Reading books directly from Scholastic. Teachers will send home the list of books with price. We have noticed an increase in the number of students who are lowering their grades due to a lack of responsibility. A great number of students are not turning in assignments. Many students while in class are slow to finish classwork and fail to finish it as homework. Any student in grades 3-5 who does not turn in a completed assignment when it is due, and/or does not finish classwork activities in a timely fashion, will remain after school to work on the missing assignments.

Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice.

Robert Frost first published the Poem Fire and Ice in Harper’s magazine in 1920. He later won the Pulitzer Prize with his book New Hampshire where this poem was featured. It is unbelievable that this poem will soon be a century old. And yet this poem was the first thing that came to my mind when I woke up this morning. Today’s CNN headlines a historic blizzard with 'life and death implications' threating Washington and the Mid-Atlantic states. By the end of the day, the US Capital can expect between 10 to 14 inches of snow with another 9 to 13 inches in the early hours of tomorrow before the storm finally moves on. This comes after President Obama declared, a few days back, that 2015 had been the “warmest” year in recorded history. For an avid Sci-Fi fan like me, this sounds a lot like the films I watch while I am cozily wrapped in my blankets at home. Scenes from “The Day After Tomorrow” or “2012” come to mind. I know you are wondering why this is relevant for an assembly like the one we have today. Why am I speaking about CNN and Doomsday events when we are gathered to celebrate the achievements of or best and brightest students? Statistically, catastrophes and deadly storms such as the one happening to our brothers and sisters of the North do not come very often. They are an amazing source of news and entertainment, they leave scars that are not easily forgotten, and in some cases, completely change the lives of the ones that go through them. But currently I am interested in discussing the other types of catastrophes that can affect us with very little notice, the small “catastrophes” that come with much more periodicity. I am sure that many of us here have had one of these small catastrophes happen in our life today. Maybe the make-up for the Senior Lunch did not come out the way you pictures it would; maybe it was yesterday’s test, of which you got feedback today, that totally took you by surprise; maybe it was your little sister, who in her rush to put on her uniform toppled the last bit of cold milk before you had a chance to serve it on your cereal; maybe it was a look…a look that hit you hard and broke a small piece of your heart. These catastrophes don’t get much news coverage other than some snickers in the background and a few tears shared with your best friends. But nevertheless, they can be devastating, they can be terrifying. According to Frost, people are polarized over what can be the source of our personal catastrophes. The reason for this discord is that while some of us chose to lead our life guided by our emotions, some of us reject our emotions altogether. When it comes to these small catastrophes, the way we react, makes all the difference. When it comes to the bumps on the road, the way we move on, allows for a smoother ride. When it comes to our falls, the way we get up, shows how big we can be. I share a special kind of job with all the staff who works in this school. We are privy to all sorts of small catastrophic events on a daily basis. We see the effects of these events on the emotional and the stoic, the ones who face them with trepidation and the ones who face them with contempt; the ones who learn from them, and the ones who miss that opportunity.
That is what I want to drive home today. Each and every one of us can chose how to react when catastrophes happen. We can place love and charity above the pain and disappointment, or we can wallow in scorn and derision. The effects of every small misfortune will be measured by the light we shed on the path to solution. If we can garner strength and wisdom after each small tragedy, we become better prepared for the next one to come. Students, prepare yourselves with a mixture of emotion and tolerance, a little bit of fire and a little bit of ice, for the next calamity. Vow to look at every mishap as an opportunity to learn. And show empathy to the ones around you who are going through their own small catastrophes today. Fellow parents, let’s allow our sons and daughters to face these blows without attempting to take them away from them. Let’s create a loving environment where they can share with us their pain, and listen to our advice for solutions. That way we will not only help them come out of their current situation, but learn how to bear the next one to come. Today, we send our prayers to the thousands who will suffer the brunt of the winter storm in the US. And from this day forth, we work on our own small catastrophes so they may be a source of wisdom to us and the ones we have around us.

Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice.
