Dear Parents, If your child is in grades 3-10, you should have received their MAP® Growth™ test results along with their Quarter I report card. These tests not only determine your child’s instructional level, but also measure their academic growth from year to year in the areas of math, reading and language usage. MAP Growth tests from NWEA® are unique in that they are adaptive tests taken on a computer. This means the test became more difficult when your child answered a question correctly. And when your child answered a question incorrectly, the test became easier. Ultimately, your child took a test specifically targeting his or her learning level. In addition, since the information presented on the test is aligned with the Common Core Standards, it is the same information that your child has already been exposed to in school. Your child’s MAP Growth results are represented as RIT scores. Like inches on a ruler, the RIT scale measures in equal intervals, regardless of a student’s grade—and it remains stable over time. As a result, we can accurately measure students’ growth in between tests and understand if they are performing on, above, or below grade level. RIT scores enable teachers to recognize where to focus attention to optimize your child’s learning and to monitor their progress. Thank you to all parents who attended our Parent-Teacher Conferences. Your support is much appreciated. We will celebrate Halloween on Tuesday October 31st. Students should wear their costumes from home. Students not wishing to dress up may wear color clothes. Parents are welcome to join us for our traditional parades at the following times: Nursery 1:00 p.m. Kinder 12:00 p.m. Pre Kinder 10:15 a.m. Parents should park in the back parking lot and proceed directly to the court. The PTO picture with Santa for Pre School students has been scheduled on the following dates: Monday, November 6th Tuesday, November 7th NB NA ND NC PKA PKB PKC PKD KB KA KC KD This is a voluntary activity. If your child will be participating he/she should wear Christmas colored clothes on the day of their picture. More information and order forms will be sent home by the PTO. On Friday November 10th, we will have an Early Dismissal due to the professional development. Nursery students will not have school on this day. Kinder students will be dismissed at 12:20 p.m. Pre Kinder students will have a regular school day. JEAN DAY for Pre Kinder students is Friday November 10th and for Kinder students on Friday November 17th. Progress Reports for 2nd quarter will be sent home on Monday November 13 th. For students experiencing academic difficulties. If your child receives one, please sign and return the next day. On Thursday November 16th at 5:00 p.m. Kinder parents are invited to a Literacy Night. Please join us to learn all about the process your child will follow in learning to read and write in English and Spanish. Please refer to the class site for more information. A BIG thank you to all Room Mothers who contributed in making the FIESTA CATRACHA a wonderful experience for students and staff members. It was quite incredible to see moms working together to decorate displays, set up food and tables and enjoy the Fiesta Catracha. Again, special thanks to teachers from the Spanish and Estudios Sociales department; Ms. Heydee Quiñonez, Ms. Nydia Barahona, Ms. Janice Bueso, Ms.Yadira Muñoz, Ms. Ruth Arita and Ms. Anita Román for putting together a wonderful program. Staff members and students looked very “catrachos” by wearing the traditional traje tipico. Also, you will only see A’s (Approaching Standards) on your child’s report cards. Remember our grading system is based on Standards. Students are working toward meeting the Standards. As a closure activity for Character Counts Week, Ms. Nena Alvarado asked students to model a good attitude by wearing “Character Counts” bracelets and t-shirts. One of the six pillars of character was assigned per grade level, t-shirts were worn on Tuesday. Muchas gracias a todas las Room Mothers que contribuyeron e hicieron que FIESTA CATRACHA fuera una experiencia maravillosa para todos los alumnos y personal de primaria. CHANGE Part II
Honors Assembly October 30, 2017

On October 24th of last year I stood in front an assembly such as this and talked about the inevitability of change. Today, I come to you with part 2 of the topic of change: The difficulty of Change. Mamata Banergee, an Indian poet, painter, and the first woman to hold the office the 8th Chief Minister of West Bengal was quoted as saying: “Change is a continuous process. You cannot assess it with the static yardstick of a limited time frame. When a seed is sown into the ground, you cannot immediately see the plant. You have to be patient. With time, it grows into a large tree. And then the flowers bloom, and only then can the fruits be plucked.� Today we find ourselves a bit uncomfortable as we look around this hallway at a different time of the day for what many of us believed to be a traditional assembly. Similarly, many of our students present have had to endure, or are currently undergoing big changes to their lives many that have been difficult to bear. Just this morning I witness a slew of seniors enter the office of their counselors with anxious looks and distressed questions about their college applications. The deadline of November 1 st, one of the many to come, is quickly approaching and its fanfare playing deafening tunes to the ears of students, parents, and teachers alike. What change is this from the normalcy school has offered these students for the past three years! The normal stress they were accustomed to having before a Math test has grown exponentially over a myriad Common App questions. And what about our freshmen, who just two months ago were introduced not only to a new Learning Management System, but a building with three floors that has them running to classes through crowded staircases and strange numbered rooms. Change is difficult. Ms. Banergee alluded to change as being a continuous process, one that required not only patience, but also a change in attitude. The difficulty of change not only rests in the fact that
we must train ourselves to adapt to the new environment and situation that the change proposes, it also rests in the fact that change cannot be measured with the same tools we so comfortably measure many of our other facets of life. For example, today we congratulate the diligence and dedication of the students sitting before me; their academic achievement is a measure of how well they followed instructions, prepared for their assessments, and learned the material that was presented to them. However, I want to go beyond the applause and the pictures that will so proudly be shared with friends and family: I want us to think how we can make this experience an agent of change in our community. Let’s imagine, for a minute, that the grades in the report cards and transcripts disappear; that the only thing we have to show for the fifteen years we spent in school is our skill to apply knowledge and common sense to every new situation that comes our way. How well would we fare? Now, let’s imagine that the list of activities and membership cards to honor societies is forgotten in the bottom drawer of an old desk; that the only way we can show our character is to apply our skill for identifying true need and our empathy to give of ourselves to the ones who need us to. How well would we fare? Maybe you can guess where I am going with this. Everything we are celebrating today is but a seed that has been planted. The fruits of this endeavor are not even close to appearing, a lot of growth, nurturing, and change need to happen before we can enjoy the beautiful flowers and pluck the fruits that will yield more seeds. And that change will be difficult. I propose that we leave today with a humbler understanding that change is the ultimate teacher. That our attitude towards change, whatever it brings, is our true report card, and our ability to face it with an open mind and positive outlook our true diploma.
I see the young faces of our future sitting here this afternoon. I envision these seeds growing into the pillars that will sustain the world and envelop its life with bountiful crops. The demands ahead will require strong seedlings, straight stems, and temperate trees. I hope we can all embrace all the changes coming our way and understand, that no matter the difficulty, the end result is well worth it.

CAMBIO Parte II

El 24 de octubre del año pasado, me paré frente a una asamblea como esta y hablé sobre la inevitabilidad del cambio. Hoy, les presento la segunda parte del mismo tema: la dificultad del cambio. Mamata Banergee, poeta y pintora india, y la primera mujer en ocupar la oficina del 8º Ministro Principal de Bengala Occidental, fue citada diciendo: "El cambio es un proceso continuo. No puede ser evaluado con el criterio estático de un marco de tiempo limitado. Cuando se siembra una semilla en el suelo, no se puede ver inmediatamente la planta. Tienes que ser paciente. Con el tiempo, crece hasta convertirse en un gran árbol. Y luego las flores florecen, y solo entonces pueden arrancarse los frutos”. Hoy nos encontramos un poco incómodos con el cambio a este pasillo a una hora diferente de la tradicional para una asamblea de honores. Del mismo modo, muchos de nuestros estudiantes presentes han tenido que soportar o están experimentando grandes cambios en sus vidas, muchos de los cuales han sido difíciles de soportar. Justo esta mañana presencié a un grupo de alumnus de último año entrar en la oficina de sus consejeras con miradas ansiosas y preguntas angustiadas sobre sus solicitudes para la universidad. La fecha límite del 1 de noviembre, una de las muchas por venir, se acerca rápidamente y su fanfarria toca melodías ensordecedoras para los oídos de los estudiantes, padres y maestros por igual. ¡Qué cambio es esto de la normalidad que la escuela ha ofrecido a estos estudiantes durante los últimos tres años! El estrés normal que estaban acostumbrados a tener antes de una prueba de Matemáticas ha crecido exponencialmente frente a las preguntas del Common App. Y qué decir de nuestros estudiantes de novena grado, que solo hace dos meses se les presentó, no solo un nuevo Sistema de Gestión de Aprendizaje, sino un edificio de tres plantas que los tiene corriendo a clases a través de escaleras atestadas hacia habitaciones numeradas extrañamente. El cambio es difícil.
La Sra. Banergee aludió al cambio como un proceso continuo, que requería no solo paciencia, sino también un cambio de actitud. La dificultad del cambio no solo radica en el hecho de que debemos entrenarnos para adaptarnos al nuevo entorno y la situación que propone el cambio, sino que también se basa en el hecho de que el cambio no se puede medir con las mismas herramientas que medimos cómodamente muchos de nuestros otras facetas de la vida Por ejemplo, hoy felicitamos la diligencia y la dedicación de los estudiantes que se sientan ante mí; su logro académico es una medida de cuán bien siguieron las instrucciones, se prepararon para sus evaluaciones y aprendieron el material que se les presentó. Sin embargo, quiero ir más allá de los aplausos y las imágenes que con tanto orgullo se compartirán con amigos y familiares: quiero que pensemos cómo podemos hacer de esta experiencia un agente de cambio en nuestra comunidad. Imaginemos, por un minuto, que las notas en las libretas de calificaciones y las transcripciones desaparecen; que lo único que tenemos para demostrar el resultado de los quince años que pasamos en la escuela es nuestra habilidad para aplicar el conocimiento y el sentido común a cada nueva situación que se nos presente. ¿Qué tan bien nos iría? Ahora, imaginemos que la lista de actividades y tarjetas de membresía de sociedades de honor se olvidaron en la gaveta inferior de un escritorio viejo; que la única forma en que podemos mostrar nuestro carácter es aplicando nuestra habilidad para identificar la verdadera necesidad y nuestra empatía para dar de nosotros mismos a los que nos necesitan. ¿Qué tan bien nos iría? Quizás puedas adivinar a dónde voy con esto. Todo lo que estamos celebrando hoy no es más que una semilla que se ha plantado. Los frutos de este esfuerzo ni siquiera están cerca de aparecer, Es necesario que ocurra un gran crecimiento, seguir una buena nutrición y un increíble cambio antes de poder disfrutar de las bellas flores y arrancar los frutos que producirán más semillas. Y ese cambio será difícil. Propongo que nos vayamos hoy con una comprensión más humilde de que el cambio es el máximo maestro. Que nuestra actitud hacia el cambio, sea lo que fuera que trajera, es nuestra verdadera boleta de calificaciones, y nuestra capacidad para enfrentarlo con una mente abierta y una actitud positiva es nuestro verdadero diploma.
Veo los rostros jóvenes de nuestro futuro sentados aquí esta tarde. Visualizo estas semillas creciendo en los pilares que sostendrán el mundo y envolverán su vida con abundantes cosechas. Las demandas futuras requerirán plántulas fuertes, tallos rectos y árboles templados. Espero que todos podamos abrazar todos los cambios que se avecinen y entender que, sin importar la dificultad, el resultado final bien vale la pena.
