El miércoles 9 de noviembre, vamos a tener una salida temprana por una capacitación para los maestros. A BIG thank you to all Room Mothers who contributed in making the FIESTA CATRACHA a wonderful experience for students and staff members. It was quite incredible to see moms working together to decorate displays, set up food and tables and enjoy the Fiesta Catracha. Again, special thanks to teachers from the Spanish and Estudios Sociales department; Ms. Heydee Quiñonez, Ms. Nydia Barahona, Ms. Janice Bueso, Ms.Yadira Muñoz, Ms. Ruth Arita and Ms. Anita Román for putting together a wonderful program. Staff members and students looked very “catrachos” by wearing the traditional traje tipico. Also, you will only see A’s (Approaching Standards) on your child’s report cards. Remember our grading system is based on Standards. Students are working toward meeting the Standards. As a closure activity for Character Counts Week, Ms. Nena Alvarado asked students to model a good attitude by wearing “Character Counts” bracelets and t-shirts. Muchas gracias a todas las Room Mothers que contribuyeron e hicieron que FIESTA CATRACHA fuera una experiencia maravillosa para todos los alumnos y personal de primaria. Fue increíble verlas trabajar juntas para decorar los murales, las mesas de la comida y disfrutar de Fiesta Catracha. perspective. It is not enough to refrain from bullying, it is necessary to be kind.
C. S. Lewis, novelist and poet, author of the popular series The Chronicles of Narnia wrote “It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.” Today, I find myself in front of many eggs who are nearing their time to hatch, and we must understand what this change means.
Think about this morning, were you part of any act of kindness? Did you say hello or thank you to any adult whose job is to make your life easier? If you are still puzzled over who I mean, think about the one who cooked you breakfast, the one that will dust and clean your room today, the one that drove you to school, the one that swept the floors of the hallways you walked by, the one that mowed the lawn that you see outside your classroom window, the one that stood in the front of the class hoping to facilitate your learning.
Today, I will speak about some subtle changes that should be happening in our lives. Adjustments that sometimes are so miniscule they may be even invisible to the untrained eye, but ones that are needed for the big changes to take effect. Our school needs a change in perspective. On Monday, members of the Student Council gave out a purple rubber bracelet that reads “I stand up against bullying”. Many of you already understand and agree that the only way to make this a more livable world is for us to be kind to one another. The few that don’t, I have faith, are in the process of learning that undeniable truth. However, to truly transform our community we need a CHANGE of
Think about last week, were you part of any act of kindness then? Did you listen rather than speak? If you are wondering what I mean, think about that classmate who you sometimes talk to but, you can’t remember the last time he or she talked back; the friend who is fun to hang around with on the weekends, but that you really haven’t texted him or her to find out about his or her life in general; the relative of whom you always demand attention, but neglect to find out if they need a shoulder to rest their head a bit. Our community also needs a change in attitude. Jim Rohn, the famous motivational speaker said, “You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the
circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself. That is something you have charge of.� I know most of us realize that it takes a personal pledge to begin to see improvement in our lives. Nevertheless, because this type of commitment is hard to accomplish, we must focus on what we must CHANGE about our attitude to alter the course of our life. It is not enough to want to become better, it is necessary to seek for improvement every day. Think about your school work, is it a true reflection of your steadfastness? I am talking about how much of yourself did you invest in the work you accomplished, did you give your very best or just jumped through the hoops to achieve a grade? Did you take any shortcuts? Did you passively look for special help when you knew deep down you could surpass all the obstacles on your own? Now, think about your family, have you tried being a beacon of light rather than a stumbling block lately? I am referring to pressing the pause button in your self-centered / Solar System view of your household where you are placed in the middle while your parents, grandparents, and siblings revolve around your issues, and step away from the center to view the galaxy from their eyes? Can you swap places for increasing intervals where you give
more help than the one you demand, more support than the one you believe you need, and more love than the one you think you are entitled to? Finally, our society needs a change in action. C. S. Lewis gave a clear metaphor with the egg. You now stand at the precipice of major changes in your lives. Whether the change be finishing your year on a positive note and leave home for college, mustering enough courage to ask a pretty girl to be your girlfriend, or adjusting your entire routine to make the Honor Roll list next quarter, you need a CHANGE in action. There is no alternative. Your egg is about to hatch. As with every change, hatching will imply work, it surely will require strength, and most likely it will also cause some pain. However, you cannot go on inside this protective case. You must break the shell, peak outside, and slowly extend your wings. Practice acts of kindness as you change your perspective, become more empathetic as you change your attitude, and stand straight, extend your wings wide and give flying a try.
