We have reached the last month of the school year! Happy Mother’s Day to all Pre School moms. Students will be bringing a small gift on Friday May 11th, which they have prepared with much love and dedication. We hope you have a wonderful day! Fourth quarter evaluations will take place May 14-May 18th. On Wednesday May 16, we will have an Early Dismissal for Staff Development. NURSERY STUDENTS WILL NOT HAVE SCHOOL ON THIS DAY. Kinder students will be dismissed at 12:20pm. Pre Kinder students will have a regular school day. Last day for Kinder Houses will be Thursday May 17th. Kinder students will have an Orientation in the Elementary school on Wednesday May 23rd. They will be touring the building and buying their snack in the cafeteria. More information will be posted on the class Google site. Pre Kinder students will be visiting the Kinder classrooms on Friday May 25. End of the year report cards will be sent home on the following dates: May 29- Kinder and Nursery May 30- Pre Kinder Kinder Graduation will take place on Wed. May 30 at 8:00am for Kinder A and Kinder C and at 10:00am for Kinder B and Kinder D. Parents please refer to my email on April 23 regarding specific information about the graduation. This will be the last day of school for Kinder students. The last day of school for Nursery students will be Wednesday May 30 th. Every year we find that time goes by quicker. So the best thing is to take a minute in our busy schedule, sit back and think of nothing else but what we are doing in the present. Relish in the thought that, no matter what, we can look out our window and enjoy the wonderful view. As time is running out for me in AST, here is a little something I wrote about TIME;
“If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.” ― Lao Tzu Although Lao Tzu, a mystic philosopher of ancient China, best known as the author of the Tao Te Ching, lived in the 6th Century before the Modern Era, he already was teaching about the effects of the human perception of time. I have seen this quote in myriad agendas, several posters, and just yesterday in a frugally decorated “WhatsApp” message. It got me thinking about the way we look at time in the 21st Century, and how much pressure it excerpts over our daily lives. Many of the ones receiving accolades today have learned to manage their time well. Wake up early enough to beat the traffic at the roundabout, manage to pass from class to class within the five minute breaks, follow a system of checking “Schoology” and turning in assignments before midnight, and lastly managing to get enough sleep during weekdays. But managing time in 2018 is not an easy task for anyone. While our past generations had timely exertions that they had to prioritize and comply with, our metaphorical backpack of “things to do” keeps getting heavier and heavier. In our daily routine we need to allocate time for our social media quota. If you are following only one social media, like let’s say “Snapchat” (“Facebook” for the ones here today who were born in the 20th Century), you must learn to scroll quickly while pressing the “like” icon as fast as you can with extreme precision during your bathroom routine. If you are lucky enough to have someone else drive your car while you zig zag around Tegucigalpa, you might get a big chunk of your Social Media duties done without having them interfere with other important parts of your daily routine like eating or sleeping which are almost as important as keeping your online persona current. If you follow more than one “Social Media” site, then all bets are off. Unless you commute to Comayagua or have
extensive bathroom breaks, you will not be able to complete the chore without it interfering with the other daily priorities. It is no longer efficient to text one person at a time, “WhatsApp” groups are popping up faster than the Spring Tulips in Holland. There might not be time enough to listen to an entire song, so we skip songs in a “Field-Day-Dance-Contest” fashion so they play like the scan button of the car radio. Watching T.V. on a T.V. set is considered retro unless you are using a streaming device, and I can safely assume the majority of us have not seen a commercial since the Super Bowl or waited over 10 seconds for the next episode of a series to load. However, the backpack is so full, that not even these shortcuts allow us to do each task individually. As we have as of yet found it impossible to have the day last longer than 24 hours, we are constantly looking for ways to combine these chores and have become very creative, ensuring we have several devices at our disposal so as to perform an orchestral ensemble of errands and responsibilities. We are texting while we stream La Casa de Papel o Velvet, and Alexa plays the latest Ozuna melody. We are uploading food photos with comments and responses as we gulp our dinner. We are playing “Fortnite” in our console whilst we keep up to speed with “Subway Surf” or “Dumb Ways to Die” in our cell phones. Multitasking is now considered an average but necessary skill and ADD the new way of becoming successful. Last century, Einstein proved the relativity of time, I fear this century will have to find another theorist to prove the inadequacy of time. The present, the time Laozi claimed the Peaceful are living in, has become anything but peaceful. Our multi-tasking and short attention spans are fractioning our serenity. We must hit the PAUSE button and look for ways that we can bring back presence to the present. We must not allow the 21st Century exertions to completely dominate our NOW. I will go beyond my usual suggestions of putting the cell phone aside at the dinner table, or going outside for a walk without earbuds to commune with nature, and ask that that you do the following:
Take out your cell phones Locate your “Reminder” or “Agenda” app
Click the “plus” or “add” Write PRESENT and click to change the Details Set an “Alarm” for today 4/10/18 at 7:00 PM Click on the “Repeat” line and set it for “Every Day” Now you have an alarm to remind you to PAUSE, and take off the metaphorical backpack off. You are free to be in the PRESENT for a couple of minutes. Breathe the PEACEFULNESS in. After you have done this exercise for a couple of days, maybe you can invite someone in your family to join you in the PRESENT and expand the time, in a few days, maybe you would like to include more people. Make it your very own “INSERT-YOUR-NAME-HERE NIGHT” and enjoy the present together with the ones closest to you. Talk, listen, laugh. Your online persona can survive this time away. Netflix can wait. Fortnite can wait. Schoology can wait. TIME WILL NOT WAIT. I will have Motz-Night this evening, will you enjoy yours? Second Semester Final Exams
