Thought of the month: “If today is all you have, what are you making of it?” How does this apply to all of us today as we are starting the LAST quarter of the year? It is very simple; it means living in the present. I know what you are thinking: That is easier said than done! As parents we look at our children and constantly dream of their future accomplishments, as doctors, lawyers, even teachers. As students they look at their colorful agendas and mark future dates with hearts and balloons hoping for a milestone or an anniversary. This is living in the future!!!

So what does it mean to live for today? It means you take every minute and work at it to make it a worthwhile moment. It means that since the first moment when your feet touch the floor early in the morning, for many of us means close to day- break, you have a goal in mind. If you live for the day you don’t allow to splurge time, you use every second to its maximum potential. This doesn’t mean you have to always multitask, it doesn’t mean you have to be constantly on the go….it means you look straight ahead, focus on your goal, and shoot for it. Sometimes, especially when our lives are in chaos, we let those minutes pass by— sterile and unused—sitting cross-handed thinking our goal can be achieved tomorrow or the next day. But every hollow capsule of time is a lost opportunity; every unused hour is a sad wasteland that can never be recovered.

We must fight this state of chaos. We must focus on clear goals. We must be ENGAGED all the time. For a 9th grader ENGAGED might mean to work on a science project four days ahead. For a tenth grader ENGAGED might mean she needs to focus intently on an algebraic problem. For a Junior ENGAGED might mean to keep up with his after school SAT studies. For a Senior ENGAGED might mean to keep abreast her college application process. Whatever it means for us, we need to be engaged, we need to be focused, we need to give purpose to the minutes that fly by every day. This is what LIVING IN THE PRESENT MEANS. For those of you whose son or daughter met your family’s goal for the third quarter, you know he/she had a clear goal, was able to focus on it and used every minute to achieve it. For all the other that feel they fell short, I challenge you to talk to them so they leave the practice of sterile minutes, of splurging seconds, of wasting time, and set their sights on clear goals, never stopping until they achieve them. IF TODAY IS ALL YOU HAVE, WHAT ARE YOU MAKING OF IT?
