We hope everyone had a great Easter Break. We are now ready for the last 2 months of school. Friday April 6th, is Movie Night from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Elementary building. More information is posted on the class Google site. There will be a presentation for Pre School parents on Wednesday April 11 at 1:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room. Ms. Angela Vidal, an occupational therapist, will be talking about “Motor Milestones in Children 0-6. How can parents support this development?”. We hope to see you there. On Friday April 13, we will have an Early Dismissal. Kinder students will be dismissed at 12:20pm. NURSERY STUDENTS WILL NOT HAVE SCHOOL ON THIS DAY. Pre Kinder students will have a regular school day. On Friday April 20th, the Chiminike museum will set up activities for the students in Pre Kinder and Kinder in honor of Earth Day. The cost will be Lps.50 per student. This will also be a Free Earth Day Colors Day. Students are encouraged to wear blue, white, green, and brown. We will have a Late Start on Monday April 23. Kinder students will begin school at 9:30 am. PRE KINDER STUDENTS WILL NOT HAVE SCHOOL ON THIS DAY. Nursery students will have a regular school day. Progress Reports will go home on Monday April 23 for Nursery and Kinder students and on Tuesday April 24 for Pre Kinder students. The Spring Concert/ Empty Bowls event will take place on Tuesday April 24 at 6:00 p.m. on the Elementary Courts. We hope you can join us. We will have a L.5.00 Colors Day on Friday March 27th. If your child will participate, please remember to send the L.5.00. We will have Spring Break on Monday April 30th and Tuesday May 1st. Classes will resume on Wednesday May 2nd. Due to the hot weather, students who wish may to do so wear uniform Bermuda shorts or their P.E. shorts to school every day, until the end of the school day. Have a great month!

On Thursday, March 22nd the Elementary students ran the Final Mile for the Operation Smile activity. It was a truly rewarding experience and the excitement was contagious. The different grade levels ran their last 3 laps, everyone cheered and celebrated success. Thank you to everyone who helped and sponsored this wonderful idea which is the 1st to be celebrated outside the U.S. We are very proud that we will be able to pay for some operations when the U.S. doctors come in May. MAP tests / TC Reading Assessment for Grades 3-4-5, begin on Monday, April 9th. Check the teachers’ sites for the exact dates your child will be taking the tests. Have your child take a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on these days. 4th quarter progress reports will be sent home on Wednesday April 25th. Please check your child’s homework folder for these reports and return them signed the following day. El día jueves, 16 de marzo, los alumnos de Primaria corrieron la Milla Final en la actividad de Operación Sonrisa. Fue una experiencia gratificante y la alegría fue contagiosa. Los diferentes grados corrieron las últimas 3 vueltas, las cuales celebraron con mucha alegría y éxito. Gracias a todos por el apoyo y patrocinio brindado a esta maravillosa idea que se celebra fuera de Estados Unidos. Nos sentimos muy orgullosos que se logrará pagar algunas de las operaciones que se realicen por los doctores norteamericanos en Mayo. Los exámenes de MAP (Matemáticas, Lenguaje y Lectura / TC Reading Assessment, para los grados de 3, 4 y 5 se realizaran Abril 9. Favor revisar el Website de la Maestra(o) por los días que su hijo(a) estará tomando dichos exámenes. Les recomendamos que su hijo(a) duerma bien y que tome un desayuno saludable en estos días. Los reportes de progreso del cuarto parcial serán enviados el miércoles 25 de abril. Favor revise el folder de tarea de su hijo (a) para estos reportes y regresarlos firmados al día siguiente. Who can we blame for the forest fires? (just in case you missed this speech)
Who can we blame for the fire that has consumed so many acres in the Hatillo area this week? The loggers, of course, the firefighters perhaps, the ICF or the Government surely. When tragedies such as this one happen so close to home, we must look for the guilty party so they can pay for the damage done. We chastise the loggers and quasi-farmers for being ignorant and lazy as to set fires to clear the fields and log the fallen wood easily; we reprimand the firefighter’s lack of speed and inability to reach the fire at its beginning; we resent the Government’s lack of foresight in taking appropriate measures to prevent and assist in combating these catastrophic events. However, we may not have struck the match that started the fire, but what if I told you we all share part of the blame? David Susuki, a professor and environmental activist sees all of us as “having become a force of nature. Not long ago, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, drought, forest fires, even earthquakes and volcanic explosions were accepted as “natural disasters” or “acts of God.” But now, we have joined God, powerful enough to influence these events” and able to obliterate the place we call home. There is a certain type of human "pride" that fuels this metaphoric fire that is now consuming our environment. I am no "green peace", tree-hugger, whale-protectant kind of person, but I realize that the nonchalance with which I take what is happening around me, makes me an accomplice to the ones that started this week’s blaze. I believe the majority reading this today, like me, walk the tenuous line between the environmentally conscious approach to living and the destructive tendencies we have been acquiring since before the industrial revolution. It takes enormous amount of discipline to stay on the side that keeps our world healthy and safe. It takes enormous amount of self-control to stay on the side that holds humans accountable for the footprint they leave behind. And it takes enormous amount of education to help others come to the realization that together we hold the key that will allow for future generations to enjoy the benefits of a clean planet.
However, when speaking of changing our ways to become active problem solvers of this environmental crisis, we cannot remain as simple observers, we cannot stop at rhetorical speeches, and we cannot assume change will come naturally. We need to work, work hard and do it NOW. How many of us will buy, or have already bought, bottled water today. Don't get me wrong, there are many circumstances where bottled water is needed, but not in a place like AST where clean potable water is easily accessible to everyone. We purchase the plastic disposable bottles because of two reasons: it is convenient and easy. It takes discipline to bring a reusable bottle from home which we can fill from the water fountains in our hallways. It takes self-control to forgo the need to have the coldest drink available at any point in the day. And it takes education to know that "it takes three times the volume of water to manufacture one bottle of water than it does to fill it, and because of the chemicals needed in the production of the plastic containers that water is mostly unusable. We use 17 million barrels of oil each year just to produce all of those water bottles.” (To put it in perspective, that’s enough oil to keep a million cars fueled for a whole year!) Don't think I throw these numbers at you because of my usual exaggerated Cuban style, Norm Shriever, the writer, blogger and environmentalist that researched these figures documented his sources very well. He also wrote that "Our human fish tank is getting terrifically cloudy because of the plastic water bottles we buy and discard so thoughtlessly." Which leads me to my next point, how many of those water bottles purchased today will end up in landfills because they will be discarded among all the other organic trash that gets picked up by the white "Alcaldía" trucks every week? It takes discipline to always deposit the empty bottles in separate recycling bins situated around school. It takes self-control to avoid using the nearest trash can, or not to leave them behind in the table, the desk, or even the car. And it will take you educating others through your future entrepreneurial jobs or positions in government about the need to recycle and reuse. Although this week's fire did not reach my home, it affected many eagle families and other neighbors who are now dealing with its aftermath. We will all understand its consequences when we, or our family members, begin to suffer respiratory discomfort or see the SANAA water schedule tighten in our area. We must not forget our hand in this. We must not forget we are all accomplices in the deterioration of our environment. We must begin to educate ourselves and change how we treat our planet today with discipline and self-control. I pledge I will start to work today towards a better tomorrow with this discipline and self-control I preach, so that my grandchildren, who will soon share our planetary home, can get educated early on how this generation, the one that sits in front of me this morning, squelched the fires my generation had thoughtlessly started.

(por si acaso se perdieron este discurso) ¿A quién podemos culpar por el incendio que ha consumido tantas hectáreas en el área de Hatillo esta semana? Los madereros, por supuesto, los bomberos tal vez, la ICF o el Gobierno seguramente. Cuando tragedias como ésta suceden tan cerca de casa, debemos buscar al culpable para que pueda pagar por el daño hecho. Castigamos a los madereros y los cuasi-agricultores por ser ignorantes y perezosos por incendiar los campos y registrar fácilmente el bosque caído; Reprimimos la falta de velocidad e incapacidad del bombero para alcanzar el fuego en su inicio; nos ofende la falta de previsión del Gobierno en la adopción de medidas apropiadas para prevenir y ayudar a combatir estos catastróficos acontecimientos. Sin embargo, es posible que no hayamos tirado el fosfóro que inició el fuego, pero ¿y si les dijera que todos compartimos parte de la culpa? David Susuki, profesor y activista medioambiental, nos ve a todos "como una fuerza de la naturaleza. No hace mucho, los huracanes, los tornados, las inundaciones, la sequía, los incendios forestales, incluso los terremotos y las explosiones volcánicas fueron aceptados como "desastres naturales" o "actos de Dios." Pero ahora nos hemos unido a Dios, lo suficientemente poderosos como para influir en estos eventos y capaced de destruir al lugar que llamamos hogar. Hay un cierto tipo de "orgullo" humano que alimenta este fuego metafórico que ahora está consumiendo nuestro ambiente. No soy una "revolucionaria verde", una mujer que se amarra a los arboles, o una persona que con pancartas quiere proteger a las ballenas, pero me doy cuenta de que la indiferencia con la que tomo lo que está ocurriendo a mi alrededor, me convierte en cómplice de los que comenzaron el fuego esta semana.
Creo que la mayoría de los leen esto hoy, como yo, caminan cerca de la línea tenue entre una vida con enfoque ambientalmente consciente y una con aferrada a las tendencias destructivas que hemos estado adquiriendo desde antes de la revolución industrial. Se necesita una enorme cantidad de disciplina para mantenerse en el lado que busca conservar nuestro mundo sano y seguro. Se necesita una enorme cantidad de autocontrol para quedarse en el lado en el cual los humanos se responsabllizan de la huella que dejan atrás. Y se necesita una enorme cantidad de educación que ayude a otros a llegar a la conclusión de que juntos tenemos la clave que permitirá a las generaciones futuras disfrutar de los beneficios de un planeta saludable. Sin embargo, al hablar de cambiar nuestra manera de ver esta crisis ambiental, no podemos permanecer como simples observadores, no podemos quedarnos con discursos retóricos y no podemos asumir que el cambio venga a nosotros naturalmente. Necesitamos trabajar, trabajar duro y hacerlo ahora. ¿Cuántos de nosotros compraremos, o ya hemos comprado, agua embotellada hoy? No me malinterpreten, hay muchas circunstancias en las cuales tomar agua embotellada es necesario, pero no en un lugar como AST donde el agua potable y limpia es fácilmente accesible para todos. Compramos las botellas desechables por dos razones: es conveniente y fácil. Se necesita disciplina para traer una botella reutilizable de casa la cual podemos rellenar de las fuentes de agua en nuestros pasillos. Se necesita autocontrol para renunciar a la necesidad de tener la bebida más fría disponible en cualquier momento del día. Y se necesita educación para saber que "se necesita más de tres veces el volumen de agua para fabricar una botella de agua que para llenarla, y debido a los productos químicos necesarios en la producción de los recipientes de plástico, ese agua es casi inutilizable; y para saber que se necesitan alredeor de 17 millones de barriles de petróleo cada año sólo para producir todas esas botellas de agua." (Para ponerlo en perspectiva, ese petróleo es suficiente para impulsar un millón de coches por un año!) No crean que les arrojo estos números como parte de mi habitual exagerado estilo cubano, Norm Shriever, el escritor, blogger y ecologista que investigó estas cifras, documentó muy bien sus fuentes, y escribió que "nuestro tanque de peces humanos está muy nublado debido a las botellas plásticas de agua que compramos y descartamos irreflexivamente." Lo que me lleva a mi siguiente punto, ¿cuántas de esas botellas de agua compradas hoy terminarán en el crematorio porque serán desechadas co toda las demás basura orgánica que los camiones blancos de la Alcaldía recogen cada semana? Se necesita disciplina para siempre depositar las botellas vacías en los recipientes de reciclaje apropiados situados alrededor de la escuela. Se necesita autocontrol para evitar usar el basurero más cercana, o para no dejarlos atrás en la mesa, en el piso, o incluso en el automóvil. Y se necesitará que eduquen a otras generaciones a través de sus futuros trabajos empresariales o posiciones en el gobierno sobre la necesidad de reciclar y reutilizar.
Aunque el fuego de esta semana no llegó a mi casa, afectó a muchas familias “Eagles” y otros vecinos que ahora están lidiando con las consecuencias. Todos comprenderemos las consecuencias del fuego cuando nosotros, o los miembros de nuestra familia, comencemos a sufrir molestias respiratorias o veamos reducido el horario del SANAA en nuestra área. No debemos olvidar nuestra mano en esto. No debemos olvidar que todos somos cómplices en el deterioro de nuestro medio ambiente. Debemos comenzar a educarnos y cambiar la forma en que tratamos nuestro planeta con disciplina y autocontrol. Me comprometo a empezar a trabajar hoy mismo hacia un mañana mejor con esta disciplina y autocontrol que predico, para que mis nietos, que pronto compartirán nuestro hogar planetario, puedan ser educados por esta la generación que está sentada frente a mí esta mañana, y la cual apagará los fuegos que mi generación inició.
