What does it mean to be a parent of a teenager?

How easy were those days when our biggest concern was what gift to buy for the Saturday afternoon piñata or what movie to see at home on a Friday night! Our little kids wanted to go with us to the supermarket, join us when we went to the mall, or go for ice cream at the nearest Fast Food "drive thru". One day, suddenly, the piñatas were over. Disney movies ceased to be repeated in the "family room". The quick trips to the mall, to the supermarket, even to the restaurant, stopped being exciting. Our children grew up. Now they have "plans" for the "weekend". Now they want us to leave them at a "pre-party" so they can arrive “en-masse” at the Friday night’s event. Now they yearn to spend every moment of the weekend in their own "world". Is this not what we just wanted to do a few years ago? This sudden change is part of the process of life, right? It is normal, correct ??? What has always seemed normal is that each new generation believes that previous one does not understand this process. It is just that, now, we have become the "previous" generation. Who has not heard the 'Friday Moan': “please .... everyone is going to the party .... I'm big now .... you do not understand me.... I will be the only one not going ….. " This cry reverberates in homes early Friday, and many parents feel powerless when they hear it. They makes us wonder: how many times can we say no? Did I not go to parties at his/her age? If I don’t allow him/her to go, will he/she lose his/her friends? Am I the only one being inflexible? And the most common question of all: When is it OK to let him/her go to these parties? ..... We do not have all the answers ... ..... What we do have is the duty to find out the answers and apply them as best we can. We have a duty to ensure the safety of our children during this process. We have a duty to be responsible adults at all times that adolescents are at our expense. Consider this:

No minor (under 18 years of age) can purchase or consume alcohol or other non-prescription drugs. We may not agree totally with this, but it is the law. If an adult, either by action or omission, allows any teenager to drink alcohol in their home or under his/her tutelage, the adult is breaking the law. If the 'Friday moan' is about asking YOU to host a party, gathering, dinner, study group, or "get together" where there will be alcohol or other drugs available for minors, there is only one answer: NO! As parents we have the duty to ENSURE there will be no consumption of alcohol or drugs by minors in our house. As parents we have the duty to KEEP WATCH so that no teenager that is in our house has access to alcohol or other drugs. And as parents we have a duty to ACT when we see that a teenager is causing damage or is in a dangerous situation. These responses are categorical: ENSURE, KEEP WATCH, ACT If the 'Friday moan' is about asking permission to attend a bar, public establishment, or a paid party where alcohol will be accessible and we know there will be little or no adult supervision, there is only one answer: NO! As parents we have the right to SELECT where our children can go. As parents we have the right to ASK what kind of party he/she will be attending. As parents we have the right to MONITOR whether the establishment is appropriate for a minor. These responses are also categorical: SELECT, ASK, MONITOR. Remember: We don’t support when we judge others, but when we help those who we have with us. We don’t support when we look the other way, but when we face difficult situations. We don’t support when we keep silent because we are “their “friend”, but when we save them from the dangers of wrong choices, hoping they will do this in turn when they grow up. Here is the pledge the AST community should follow: You will support your teenage son/daughter by supporting mine. I will support my teenage son/daughter by supporting yours. Let us help each other and we can answer all these questions together. "It takes a village to raise a child" African Proverb
