WHY THE THREE-TIME GRAND PRIX WORLD CHAMP IS THE PERFECT GRAND MARSHAL FOR THIS YEAR’S AMA VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE DAYS CELEBRATION
He’s older and grayer and, like most of us, surely a bit wiser. But the fact remains that “Fast Freddie” Spencer is one of the most legendary motorcycle racers the world has ever known.
And that’s why it’s an absolute privilege to have the three-time Grand Prix World Champion as Grand Marshal for this year’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, running July 24–26.
To most, Freddie is known primarily as a Grand Prix hero, who not only won his
first 500cc World Championship over the great Kenny Roberts in 1983, but who, after a disastrous 1984 aboard a newfangled V-four-powered NSR500, returned to the GP wars in 1985 with a vengeance, winning not only the 500cc title but also the 250cc crown, an achievement never to be repeated.
But Freddie was a demon on RD350s and TZ250s during his club-racing days, and on the first-generation AMA Superbikes, too, riding a host of marques as he moved into the pro level and finally to Team Honda’s road
“I haven’t been back to Mid-Ohio since my earlier AMA Superbike days, so I’m really excited to see what the fuss is all about — especially with some of my old racebikes on display.”

And that makes him a perfect Grand Marshal for an AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days event that’ll highlight and celebrate the 50th anniversary of that first AMA Superbike Championship in the bicentennial year of 1976.
“I have never attended an AMA Vintage Days celebration,” Freddie told us, “but I have heard a lot about it, and all of it has been good! I haven’t been back to Mid-Ohio since my earlier AMA Superbike days, so I’m really excited to see what the fuss is all about — especially with some of my old racebikes on display.”
In his role as Grand Marshal, Freddie will wear a lot of hats, and for fans who make the pilgrimage to Lexington, Ohio, to speak with and hear from the champ in a wide range of settings — from interviews on the AMA Stage, to autograph sessions, to laps on the Mid-Ohio road course each day, and more — it’s bound to be thrilling.
“I’m excited about the opportunity,” he said. “So we’ll see you all there.”

The Lap for History gives riders a chance to take their motorcycles on a parade lap around the 2.4-mile road racing circuit at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and this year it will be led by Grand Marshal and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Freddie Spencer. Registration is at the Ride Staging area. A $20 donation to the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation is required.

The Ashland Dinner Ride is a special one-night, VIP flat track experience you won’t want to miss!
Kick off your Saturday evening entertainment at VMD by joining select AMA staff on the Ashland Dinner ride. It starts with a casual road ride through Ohio’s scenic countryside from the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, to the historic half-mile track at the Ashland County Fairgrounds for a round of the AMA Vintage Flat Track National Championship Series.

KING’S CUP/GOLDEN CUP
The King’s Cup and Golden Cup — now running for the second year — bring a different flare to the motocross track at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. With competition extending to the air-cooled bikes from the glory days of AMA Hall of Famer Broc Glover’s racing career, these topflight races will crown a pair of riders as the fastest and most daring motocross racers at VMD.
The Golden Cup event features air-cooled, non-linkage and non-discbraked 125cc two-stroke machinery from the latter 1970s and recalls the mechanical simplicity of those early AMA 125cc National Championship years. The single-moto Golden Cup race will run on Saturday, July 25 at 2 p.m.
The King’s Cup event will feature air-cooled, two-stroke open-classers from the 1970s and ’80s that celebrate the glory years of 500cc AMA National Championship and 500cc World Championship competition. The single-moto King’s Cup race will run on Sunday, July 26 at 2 p.m.
*Riders for these one-moto Cup races should be Expert- or Intermediateclassified, and each Cup race will be divided into two divisions — under 40 years of age and over 40.
ROAD RACE GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP
The AMA Road Race Grand Championship is a single national championship event that determines AMA amateur and expert national road racing champions. For the first time, the 2026 AMA Road Race Grand Championship will run alongside AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. With multiple AMA national championships on the line, several special awards will also be earned by racers throughout the afternoon. Most notably, the Nicky Hayden AMA Road
Race Horizon Award will be awarded to the amateur racer that showcases the necessary skill and professionalism to excel at the highest level of the sport. The AMA will also recognize the AMA Amateur Road Racer of the Year and the AMA Vet/Senior Road Racer of the Year during the event.
