7TH ANNUAL

NATIONAL CONSCIENCE MONTH A TimeSimple to Pause, methods to help theChoose Conscience lead us— Reflect, and Wisely one breath, one choice at a time.

EDITOR’S INTRODUCTION

RENEWING THE MIND FOR THE SEVENTH ANNUAL

CONSCIENCE MONTH Each January, the observance of National Conscience Month invites us to pause, look inward, and rediscover the quiet source of wisdom already present within each of us. As we celebrate the seventh annual observance, I am newly reminded that the Conscience is neither a moral reprimand nor an external authority––it is the mind’s highest wisdom, patiently waiting for us to listen. This issue of the JanuaryFebruary, 2026 Transformation Journal explores that inner wisdom through a wide range of perspectives. The lead essay, “Updating the Mind’s Software,” examines the central premise of Yoga Science: that much of our suffering arises not from the world itself, but from the outdated mental software through which we perceive it. When the Conscience is consulted, this software can be consciously updated—leading to clearer choices, healthier relationships, and a more peaceful inner and outer life. To support this theme, we offer four companion sidebars, each illuminating a different aspect of inner 2

transformation. One provides practical diagnostics for recognizing when old, faulty software is running our lives. Another explores images of awakening in world literature. A third examines the Conscience as humanity’s ancient inner North Star. And the fourth traces a brief history of the inner voice across cultures— from the yogic sages to the Stoics, mystics, Transcendentalists, and modern psychology. Taken together, these essays remind us that the work of National Conscience Month is timeless: to pause, reflect, and choose our thoughts, words, and actions with awareness. Whether we call it buddhi, intuition, the still small voice, or inner guidance, the Conscience remains the most trustworthy instrument we possess for navigating a complex and ever-changing world. May the reflections in this issue support your own journey of conscious renewal. Ram Lev (Leonard Perlmutter) Editor, Transformation Journal

UPDATING THE MIND’S SOFTWARE: RECLAIMING THE CONSCIENCE BY RAM LEv (LEONARd PERLMUTTER)

“Lift your lower self by your Higher Self; do not let your lower self be diminished. The Higher Self alone is the friend of the lower self, and the lower self alone is the enemy of the Higher Self.” –– Bhagavad Gita 6:5-6 “The soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts.” –– Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Each January, National Conscience Month invites us to pause—to look within and remember that the human mind is not a fixed machine, but a living instrument that can be consciously re-programmed. As we celebrate the seventh annual observance, it becomes more clear than ever before that our collective healing depends upon this simple act of updating the mind’s software.

The Inner Operating System Every mind carries unconscious programs—samskaras (mental habits) that might have once protected us but now often limit our perception. These patterns are like outdated software code running silently in the background, producing anxiety, judgment, or fear. The Yoga Vasiṣṭha taught that liberation requires rewriting this programming through knowledge and detachment. And Patanjali’s Yoga Sūtras diagnosed the same problem: to the discriminating person, life becomes painful when the mind’s tendencies remain unexamined. The remedy, he said, is abhyāsa (steady practice) and vairāgya (nonattachment)—precisely the mental software update that restores harmony between thought and the Conscience. 3

East and West in Dialogue The great teachers of every culture have pointed to this same renewal. Plato’s prisoner, turning from shadows toward the light, represents that instant when perception upgrades. Marcus Aurelius, Roman emperor from 161-180CE, reminds us in his Meditations, the compilation of his philosophical ideas, that “the soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts,” an early Stoic recognition that consciousness shapes experience. William Blake, 19th century visionary, artist and poet, envisioned our perception, thoroughly cleansed until “everything would appear to human beings as it is—infinite.” And Emerson’s SelfReliance urged each of us to stop “groping among the dry bones of the past” and trust the living intuition within. Across centuries, these voices describe one continuous movement: the evolution of awareness from compulsion to freedom, from reaction to reflection. The Modern Path of Conscience Modern psychology echoes this same eternal truth. After being imprisoned in two Nazi concentration camps, psychiatrist Viktor Frankl wrote that, “between stimulus and response there is a space”—a sacred interval in which freedom resides. In Yoga Science, that space belongs to the Conscience (buddhi)—the inner faculty that can evaluate the mind’s many voices and choose what truly serves our highest good. When we meditate, breathe consciously, and practice self-inquiry, we create access to that space. In choosing Conscience over habit, we perform the greatest act of creativity available to a human being. 4

The Evolution of a Nation This is why National Conscience Month was born: to encourage individuals, families, schools, and communities to experiment with this inner technology. For example, each essay written by a high-school senior for the 2026 Conscience Month Scholarship Contest becomes a small revolution— a demonstration that awareness, once awakened, can rewrite even the deepest habits of thought. More than 450 students accepted this challenge during last year’s Conscience Month. Their reflections testified that Consciencebased decision-making is not an abstraction but a practical path to peace and happiness. A Call to Re-Education As the Bhagavad Gita affirms, “The Higher Self alone is the friend of the lower self.” When we choose to align our thoughts with that Higher Self, we lift the world along with ourselves. The real curriculum for the twenty-first century is not new information, but a new relationship to information already within. By teaching the next generation how to update their minds’ software—to exchange outdated patterns for conscious, discriminating choice—we honor both ancient wisdom and modern science. In this seventh anniversary of National Conscience Month, may we each pause, look inward, and remember: the greatest revolution begins not in the streets, on Tv or our cellphones, but in the space between one thought and the next.

“The Conscience is not a rulebook, but a compass.” Thomas Merton (1915-1968)

Originally published in 2005, The Heart and Science of Yoga by Leonard Perlmutter (Ram Lev), is far more than a meditation manual. It is a visionary integration of ancient spiritual wisdom with contemporary scientific understanding––offering a fully articulated system for physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Developed from his half-century of Yoga Science practice, and the curriculum of his acclaimed six-week AMI Meditation® Foundation Course, this book represents a watershed contribution to the evolving relationship between Eastern wisdom traditions and Western healthcare. The rare value of The

Heart and Science of Yoga is its comprehensiveness. Rather than isolating meditation as a standalone technique, Perlmutter honors its o r i g i n a l context within the broader tradition of Yoga Science––which includes Yoga Philosophy and Psychology, Mantra Science, Ayurveda, diaphragmatic breathing, easy-gentle yoga exercises, principles of Quantum Physics, self-inquiry, and a dynamic, practical selfcare plan. This holistic framework echoes the integrated approach of the ancient sages, while also demonstrating a deep sensitivity to the challenges of modern 21st-century life––stress, burnout, distraction, and chronic ill-

HOW TO RECOGNIZE OUTDATED MENTAL SOFTWARE: FOUR CLASSIC SYMPTOMS BY RAM LEV (LEONARD PERLMUTTER) Every mind carries programs—old impressions, habits, and emotional reflexes—that once protected us but now operate automatically, without our conscious consent. Yoga Science teaches that these patterns can be updated, but the first step is recognizing when our mental software is no longer serving our highest good. Here are four classic symptoms that signal it’s time for an inner upgrade. 1. Repetition Without Reflection When the same reactions arise again and again—even when they lead to disappointment—an old program is running. Habit takes over, and the Conscience is bypassed. If you often find yourself saying, “Why did I do that again?” you’ve encountered a loop ready for revision. 2. Emotional Intensity That Feels Disproportionate Sudden, strong waves of irritation, anxiety, or sadness often signal buried

impressions surfacing. These emotions are valuable diagnostics: they reveal software that is outdated, misaligned, or unfinished. 3. A Persistent Sense of Inner Conflict When competing voices in the mind pull in opposite directions, an obsolete pattern is pushing against emerging wisdom. This inner friction is not failure—it is the threshold of clarity, when the Conscience is trying to be heard. 4. Decisions Made in Haste or Fear Choices made impulsively or fearfully tend to reinforce unhelpful mental software. Fear especially drives the mind backward into outdated strategies that no longer apply. Awareness of and examination of these symptoms is the first upgrade. The moment we notice the perceptive capacity of the Conscience to reflect unerring Super Conscious Wisdom, purification has already begun.

WHEN THE MIND TURNS TOWARD THE LIGHT: FOUR IMAGES FROM WORLD LITERATURE BY RAM LEV (LEONARD PERLMUTTER) The world’s great literary works often portray awakening not as an argument, but as an image—a moment when perception shifts and old mental software dissolves. 1. Plato’s Pivot from the Cave A chained prisoner turns away from the wall of shadows toward the light. Nothing changes except the direction of his attention, yet that pivot transforms his world. Awakening begins with a single shift in perception. 2. Blake’s Cleansed Doors of Perception William Blake envisioned consciousness as a window that, once cleansed, reveals the infinite. The world doesn’t change; the viewer does. The image captures what happens when distortion drops away.

3. Dante Emerging from the Dark Wood dante begins the divine Comedy lost “midway in the journey of our life.” His recognition of confusion is the first step out. Awareness—not certainty—is the path’s beginning. 4. Eliot’s Return with New Eyes T.S. Eliot imagines arriving “where we had started and know(ing) the place for the first time.” After an inner journey, familiar life becomes newly illuminated—proof that perception has matured. All these four images remind us that transformation begins the moment we turn, cleanse, emerge, or see anew. When perception is corrected, the Conscience quietly returns to the center of awareness.

SIDEBAR C

THE CONSCIENCE AS THE INNER NORTH STAR: WHAT THE ANCIENTS KNEW BY RAM LEV (LEONARD PERLMUTTER) Long before psychology mapped the mind, ancient sages recognized a quiet faculty capable of guiding life toward freedom. In Yoga Science, this is the Conscience (buddhi)—the inner North Star that can evaluate impulses, desires, and beliefs, and choose what is truly beneficial. The Bhagavad Gita urges us to “lift yourself by your own Self,” a call to let inner wisdom—not habit—chart our course. The teaching presumes that clarity already resides within us; our task is to listen and follow its wisdom. The Stoics echoed this understanding. Marcus Aurelius taught that the mind becomes “dyed with the color of its thoughts,” yet a person can step back and choose differently. And Epictetus provided one of history’s clearest psychological insights: “Human beings are not disturbed by things, but by the views they take of them.”

Here he exposes the root of suffering: perceptions are shaped by unconscious concepts, and when those concepts are faulty, experience becomes painful. Without the Conscience actively questioning these inner assumptions, we remain bound to distorted views and the suffering they create. Mystics across cultures affirmed the same truths about our Inner Teacher, the Conscience. Emerson saw intuition as a direct channel to universal intelligence. Blake suggested that infinite reality emerges when perception is purified. In Yoga Science, all these threads converge: the Conscience alone has the capacity to reflect truth without distortion. When we pause, breathe, and inquire, we open space for its steady, liberating guidance.

“There is a higher court than courts of justice, and that is the court of the Conscience. It supersedes all other courts.” MAHATMA GANDHI (1869-1948) 8

SIDEBAR D

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE INNER VOICE BY RAM LEV (LEONARD PERLMUTTER) Across spiritual, philosophical, and psychological traditions, humanity has recognized an interior instrument of guidance—an inner voice that can lead the mind beyond outdated mental software toward clarity. In the ancient science of Yoga, buddhi, or Conscience, was described as the faculty capable of distinguishing between the helpful and the harmful. Though a subtle voice, it was considered our most reliable guide whenever the mind became quiet. Socrates spoke of his daimonion, a small inner prompting that restrained him when he drifted toward error. Though not instructive in content, it functioned as a gentle interruption of habit—a sign of the inner voice at work. The Stoics deepened this theme. For example, Epictetus wrote, “Human beings are not disturbed by things, but by the views they take of them.” With this insight, he revealed that suffering arises not from events but from unexamined interpretations. Without

consulting our inner faculty that questions those interpretations, we become prisoners of our own mental software. Christian mystics later described listening for the “still, small voice,” emphasizing receptivity rather than dogma. Emerson reframed this same guidance as self-reliance, reminding us that intuition connects each person to universal truth. In the twentieth century, Viktor Frankl articulated the psychological dimension: between stimulus and response lies a space—a sanctuary in which the inner voice can be heard. Across eras and cultures, the message is consistent: human beings possess an interior compass. When we teach the Ego, Senses and Unconscious Mind how to become coordinated with the flawless intuitive wisdom reflected by a purified Conscience, perception becomes accurate, decisions become wise, and life becomes more joyful, harmonious, healthy and rewarding.

“The voice of the Conscience is so delicate that it is easy to stifle it; but it is also so clear that it is impossible to mistake it.” LEO TOLSTOY (1828-1910) 9

Vyasa Spiritual Poetry by

I don’t wanna

A slave and don’t know it

The immature person does What he or she likes

Whether you know it Or not

The mature person likes What he or she does

You’re A slave

With the former Led by ego

To anything You resent

And the latter Led by love No escape clause Contrary to Popular belief, Meditation is not An escape It doesn’t take you out of life It puts you fully in it, Only this time, You’re awake The wrong will

Or anything You crave Genius Genius has nothing to do With what you know And everything to do With what you do do you listen to and follow The wisdom of your own soul Or simply spew A fact or two? More questions than answers

You’ll know exactly What to do

Who am I? From where have I come? Why am I here? What’s to be done? Where will I go?

In every relationship On every field of action

Find the answers To these questions

According to the will of God And not the will of you

And let the world know

If you follow The inner promptings

THE GIFT OF THE CONSCIENCE BY ANANdA MATA (AMY LASkOWITz) “The greatest gift is your Conscience, the voice of your heart. Unless you learn to hear and heed the voice of your heart, you cannot be happy. Unless you hear and heed the voice of your heart, all great Bibles of the world will remain useless to you, for you will not understand their contents and intents. You have put your Conscience, the precious gift of Providence, to sleep.” SWAMI RAMA OF THE HIMALAYAS A few short days ago, we experienced the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. In the shadows of this wintery darkness lies the promise of a return to the light. As a candle drives out the darkness of winter night, so too can our spiritual practice cast out the shadows of fear, attachment and the old habit patterns that shackle us to the unreal. For me, as the mother of three young children, december is a time filled with magic and excitement. The window for this season of wonder is short, and I find myself in a monthlong marathon working to materialize the magic of the season. Several weeks ago, I overheard one of my children whispering to our Elf on the Shelf a secret Christmas wish, and after communicating this secret, I heard them say, “and this is how I will know your magic is real.” Without hesitation, moving from a deep-seated attachment to preserving their childhood, I

placed an order for the requested item. About a week before Christmas, I realized that the secret item had missed its promised delivery date. Tracking revealed that it had been delayed by snow storms, but it was on its way. When the item finally reached our local Postal Service distribution point, instead of being forwarded to our local post office, it was erroneously sent to another distribution center, where for all intents and purposes, it appeared lost. This was an unusual item that could not be replaced by a local store. With only two days before Christmas, I was confronted by my immense attachment. The desire to secure the magic of the season for my child was strong, and its presence cast a dark shadow. Lost in the darkness of this thwarted desire, the ego began to catastrophize. It planned and plotted. It considered complaining to the company or the post office in an effort to grasp 11

at its desired objective. It thought about driving to the distribution center and asking for the package. In the heightened state of lack, my mental despair was planning chaos and manifesting physically in the body. I could feel that my breathing had become shallow and the body was tense and contracted. I had forgotten the truth of who I was and was lost in a mire of delusion of my own making. This went on until a small spark, a memory of an ancient teaching, broke the spell. That teaching was contained in “The Didache,” also known as The Lord's Teaching Through the Twelve Apostles to the Nations. The original manuscript contains a brief, anonymous early Christian treatise, dated by modern scholars to the first or second century Ad. I had heard one line from that treatise that in a recent lecture on The Didache: “Accept whatever happens to you as good, knowing that all comes from the Supreme.” This teaching lit the candle that cast out the shadows plaguing my inner being and delivered me to knowledge of the Higher Self. In light of this knowledge, I could see both the futility and pain that complaining to an uninvolved party would spread. The opening line of The Didache states, “There are two ways, one of life and one of death, but a great difference lies between the two ways.” In the limitations of my attachment, I had been unconsciously choosing the way of death, and the effects of that choice had been poisonous to both my physical and mental equilibrium. In the light of that remembrance, I was free to consciously choose the way of Life, the way of the Conscience. I let go of the attachments the personality had

been holding onto, for my child and for myself. I found rest in the Higher knowledge that whatever transpired would be perfect. And in this choosing, the muscles in my body relaxed, my breath deepened, and I found incredible peace in trustful surrender. I was walking in remembrance of the Higher Truth. In the early hours of Christmas Eve the lost package was finally transferred to our local post office. The item made its way to a spot under our tree that evening. The personality felt a sense of magic in this timely delivery. However, to the Higher Self, the real magic resided in the tested wisdom of the Higher Truth. knowing the peace I had found in surrender, knowing that the Higher knowledge kept me from burdening another in my attachment– –and seeing how easily the mind can fall prey to its attachments–– was the real magic that engendered immense gratitude that day. Every thought, every choice matters. To choose the way of life, our course must be steered by the unerring voice of the Conscience. As we move into January and reflect on National Conscience Month, may you carry the candle of your spiritual practice with you. May it guide your choices and light your path. May you bask in the warmth it perpetually offers. The promise is that when you follow the wisdom of your Conscience, you will always be led for your highest and greatest good. In that promise there lies an ageless love and enduring peace, and you come to know that you are, already, the limitless light that you seek. 9
