Letter from the CEO/President and AIS Officers Greetings and a warm welcome to beautiful St. George, Utah and Illume Gallery of Fine Art…home of our 21st Annual American Impressionist Society National Juried Exhibition! Given the challenges we’ve all faced this year, we are so grateful to Jane Bell Meyer and her team for committing to host our exhibition in her beautiful galleries. This year’s exhibition features 185 juried works from our members as well as works from our AIS Masters, Founders and Officers, for a total of just over 200 paintings. This is an exceptional collection of some of the finest Impressionist paintings available today. Sincere congratulations to this year’s juried artists for their outstanding achievement in being selected for this prestigious exhibition. The American Impressionist Society was founded in 1998 by Florida artists William Schultz, Charlotte Dickinson, and Marjorie Bradley of Vero Beach, and Pauline Ney, of Ellenton. Their goal was, and our goal continues to be, to promote the appreciation of American Impressionism and to provide artists working in the Impressionist genre with exhibition, educational and networking opportunities. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. We currently have over 1800 active members across the United States. Membership in AIS is open to American Impressionist artists who are legal U.S. residents and anyone who would like to support AIS as a supporting member or patron. Putting together an exhibition of this caliber takes an extraordinary amount of time and hard work, and we would personally like to thank everyone who has had a part in this year’s show. Letter from the AIS Executive Director Greetings to AIS members and friendsLet’s look at the bright side of 2020! It’s been a year filled with “firsts” for AIS. In January, I became the first Executive Director for AIS and I am delighted to serve in this position. I was already working from home for AIS when the pandemic altered our lives and my backyard office continues to be the perfect setting for remote work. Speaking with artists from across the US is the highlight of my days as I learn of your successes, challenges, needs, dreams and ideas for AIS to improve. Our first Online Exhibition was launched this summer—with a few technical setbacks! We were so pleased to have such an outstanding level of participation from both long time and new members. The accepted works along with Masters, Officers and Board members are “displayed” in a digital catalog on our website and is available until November 9. Thanks to our five anonymous jurors and Awards Judge Ned Mueller AISM for managing ever-changing deadlines. The inaugural AIS Artist Retreat was held on Mackinac Island, Michigan at the end of August with 23 artists in attendance. We designed the gathering to provide a creative, engaging, and visually stimulating environment for artists to get inspired and energized. The weather was perfect, the landscape was colorful and the comradery was just what we all needed during this unsettling year. And we sold 26 paintings in under 90 minutes—collectors and artists were delighted! Watch for details and location for our 2021 retreat. By the time you read this note, I will have met with AIS Founder, Charlotte Dickinson, at her home in Pennsylvania. It’s an honor to continue her visionary work in providing opportunities for artists working in the style of Impressionism. The steadfast leadership of Debra Joy Groesser, the current Board President/CEO, is evident in the growth of membership, increased programming, and the awareness of capacity to employ a fulltime staff member. Thank you, Charlotte and Debra, for your trust and guidance. What’s on the horizon for AIS? A painting trip to Europe perhaps in 2022. More casual member events across the US. Additional professional development and online learning. Mentorship for new members. The list gets longer and the work is so rewarding and engaging. This is my first AIS National Exhibition and I’m so delighted to have our exhibit installed and a week of events despite the challenges of 2020. AIS is grateful to have galleries, artists, patrons, sponsors and communities embrace our exhibitions each year. Yes, 2020 has been quite a year but for AIS, we’ve just gotten stronger! Rooted in French Impressionism and Carrying on the Tradition Today In Paris, France, in the mid 1800’s, there was a famous annual fine art exhibition originally held in the upper rooms of the Louvre Palace. “The Salon des Beaux Arts” was an arduously juried exhibition of works meeting the highest standards of realist academic quality. The Salon was hostile toward any bold new art and stood by their rigorous approval methods. Often as many as 3,000 works were denied entrance. In 1863, there were a great many works refused to the Salon and Napoleon, not wanting to upset the artists and voters as it was an election year, created the Salon de Refusés, for the refused works to be shown together.

French Impressionism spread not only to other areas of the world such as Russia, but had a profound impact on some important Americans studying abroad in France. Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, James McNeil Whistler, Guy Rose and many more, all picked up influences from this new style of painting and began to incorporate its colors and effects into their works.

It was here that new works by artist Edouard Manet were shown depicting everyday scenes and using more lively visual brushwork. Instead of the usual iconic heroic, historical or mythical based themes, Manet’s works allowed the viewer into the scene themselves - paintings from daily life.

These early American Impressionists later formed groups such as The Ten, including Robert Reid, John H. Twachtman, Edmund Tarbell, Willard Metcalf, Whistler and Chase. They would funnel down the Impressionists techniques, colors and influence to the rest of America in their own schools and ateliers. Impressionism had spread from these first schools on the East coast all the way to the West by 1910 and lasted till about 1935 creating legendary California Impressionists artists such Edgar Payne, William Wendt and Guy Rose who had painted alongside Monet himself.

His bold work influenced many artists, in particular, Claude Monet who had begun painting landscapes. Following his friend Eugène Boudin painting on the shores of the Normandy coast and later influenced by the Barbizon School’s landscapes in the country, Monet became one of the first Impressionist painters. Before this time, every day scenes and simple landscapes were not considered final works of art, suitable to exhibit or sell. “Impressionism” as it later became known was a brand new form of art. Born from this new subject matter and using more color, bold visible brushwork, and especially portraying the effects of light and atmosphere, Impressionism, at first looked down upon as unfinished works, became one of the most well known art genres.

Unlike the newspapers and buyers in Paris, American collectors seemed to be more open and accepting of this new style of work. One very important art dealer from the time, Mr. Durand Ruel, took this influence one step further by bringing over 300 Impressionist works by Eduard Monet, Edgar Degas, Berthe Morisot, Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Gustave Caillebotte, and more to New York in 1886 in an important exhibition that would reach and directly influence more American painters such as Childe Hassam and William Merritt Chase.

AIS is very proud to have grown to be one of the most respected national art organizations in America. Rooted in this rich history, we aim to continue the tradition. AIS preserves the Impressionist values and endeavors to bring you new works from artists working in the tradition today each year in our annual exhibitions. We thank you for your continued support. The History of AIS as told by Charlotte Dickinson, Founder Transcribed from Charlotte’s video on the “About Us” section of our website. “Many years ago, while taking my mentor, Charles Movalli, to the airport after a wonderful workshop, he asked me, “Do you know William Schultz? He’d be like a finishing school for you.” When I got home, I called Bill Schultz and studied with him for the next ten years with his teaching, his mentoring and his inspiration. He was the most wonderful teacher! I wanted to pay it forward and help him find more venues to exhibit his work. I approached the Lake Wales Art Center in Florida and asked if they would be willing to show our work. They said they only show affiliated artists and asked if we were affiliated and I said, “Oh yes!” Then as I left the building I thought to myself “oh liar, liar pants on fire!” But I made up for it…and when I got home I called Bill Schultz, Marjorie Bradley and Pauline Ney, and we got affiliated. Hence our first show was held at the Lake Wales Art Center with six artists showing. And look how it has grown. Awards Judge William Schneider, AISM William A. Schneider’s work has evolved since he finished his studies at the American Academy of Art. Workshops with Carolyn Anderson, Dan Gerhartz, Scott Burdick, Harley Brown, Scott Christensen, Huihan Liu, David Leffel, and Richard Schmid, among others, solidified his understanding of the basics. But he credits the many hours he spent studying and copying masterworks by Nicolai Fechin with loosening up his brushwork and approach to edges. He also describes four days of intense study at an exhibit of the works of J.W. Waterhouse in Montreal as an “epiphany” in his understanding of composition. William commented, “The wonderful thing about art is that you can always get better. I view myself as a perpetual student!” Bill was awarded Master Signature status in Oil Painters of America (OPA). In addition, the Pastel Society of America has recognized him as a “Master Pastelist,” IAPS (The International Association of Pastel Societies) has named him to the Masters’ Circle, and AIS made him a Master Signature Member (AISM). Bill teaches across the US, lectures and is a mentor to many artists.

His creative talents also include his work as professional musician and he recently released an His new album “Steady Rain”, by the Schneider Ross Band, was released in December and is available on I-Tunes, Amazon Music, Spotify etc. The band plays mostly progressive rock/blues. Bill has won countless awards, has been featured in more than 20 magazine publications, and has been featured in many books/videos. Read a recent candid interview with Doreen St. John AIS and Board Secretary for American Impressionist Society at www. americanimpressionistsociety.org Excerpts from the interview: Can you tell us how you define Impressionism? Does it have to do with the subject matter (scenes of everyday life and landscapes), technique (broken color and brushwork), the use of light, all of these or something more? Bill classifies himself as an Impressionist painter in that he’s not trying to get a detailed, sculptural rendition. He would

rather paint his reaction to what he’s seeing. Bill shared a quote he likes, attributed to Richard Schmid: ‘People don’t want to know what you SEE, they want to know what YOU see.’ “I want to convey motion, a shorthand, summation, or impression of what I’m seeing as opposed to a tight photograph.” He likes the broken color/strokes of impressionists, especially the work of the Russian artists with their broken form, and most notably the work of Nicolai Fechin. Bill states, “It’s accurate and simultaneously loose. The viewer fills in the missing pieces. I try to see how far I can go to destroy the form while still keeping the image recognizable.” How important have juried shows been in building your career? About how many of these do you enter each year and how do you decide or choose the ones you submit to? Juried shows have been very important to Bill. When he first entered a competition, he was rejected. His reaction was to look at who got in and analyze what they were doing right. “If you are thin skinned and want to be an artist you picked the wrong profession.” Bill looks at rejection as a learning experience.

“The competitions are good because they make you reflect on the quality of your work and what needs improvement. “ Since AIS includes works in several mediums, how has working in a variety of mediums influenced/affected your work as an artist? “I work primarily in oil and pastel and also do a lot of charcoal drawing. Drawing is the root skill.” Bill says each medium has its strengths and weaknesses. “There are certain things in pastel that are easy as pie. If you blend pastels (I do), you can apply thin layers, cool over warm or vice versa; if you do you can get the same vibration that you get when you look at skin. Skin is translucent. In areas where the bones are close to surface, such as on the bridge of nose, you can see the ivory of the bone there. Around the eyes you see the color of veins; on the cheeks you’re seeing the red of the capillaries. You also see the melanin in the skin. Sitting on the surface of the skin you see the reflection of the light source… there are 3 different layers.

AIS Mission Statement Florida artists William Schultz, Charlotte Dickinson and Marjorie Bradley of Vero Beach, and Pauline Ney of Ellenton, founded the American Impressionist Society, Inc. (AIS) with this goal in mind: “To promote the appreciation of American Impressionism through exhibitions, workshops, videos and other media.”

Membership Artist memberships are open to American Impressionist artists who are legal United States residents. Supporting memberships are open to anyone who would like to support our mission of promoting the genre of American Impressionism. AIS is a 501(c)(3) non profit corporation. Contributions to AIS are tax deductible.

Associate Members Open to all levels, you may join by mailing the completed membership form with a check for annual dues of $60 or by paying online through our website. AIS Associate Members in good standing who are legal US residents may enter the AIS National Juried Exhibition and the AIS Impressions Small Works Showcase, AIS Online Exhibition (additional entry fee required).

Signature Members Associate Members who have been accepted into three AIS National Juried Exhibitions, or two AIS National and two AIS Small Works Showcases, AND who have been an Associate Member for a minimum of three consecutive years (including the years of acceptance into the exhibitions), may apply for Signature status. Applications are accepted Oct 1 - Nov 15 each year. Application form is available on our website. Signature Members in good standing may enter AIS National Exhibition and AIS Small Works Showcase, AIS Online Exhibition (additional entry fee required), may use the initials “AIS” after their name, and be listed on the AIS website and in our exhibition catalog. Annual dues ($60) must be paid to maintain Signature status.

Master Artist Members Master Artist members are invited by the AIS Board of Directors and may use the initials “AISM” after their name. Masters are selected carefully and are nationally known and considered to be leaders in the art community. They epitomize the highest level of impressionism and passionately give back to the society by sharing their knowledge.
