I
t has been a very eventful couple months since the last article I wrote! We had a very good turnout at the field day in Champaign, Ill., where we are doing the sire test with the University of Illinois. We had a couple bull owners in attendance but the majority were association members there to take in the info that Dr. Dan Shike and his crew have compiled over the past few months on the Chianina sired cattle they are feeding out. You can find more info on sire test in this issue of the ACJ. From there I did some herd visits in southern Indiana and then started my journey back toward South Dakota making some stops in Illinois and other states along the way. I have come across some herd bull prospects that I think could be breed changing sires for the Chiangus breed in my travels the past couple months. One thing is for sure, the quality of cattle I have seen is over the top. I have been to many places looking at sale cattle, from those with online sales to private treaty phone bid sales, and the demand for Chianina influenced cattle has been great with cattle bringing top dollar! After being home a couple days I was off on a state fair run between South Dakota and Nebraska. First stop was Huron, S.D., for the open shows. Then I was off to Grand Island, Neb., for the open shows and the Western Regional Jr show. The Chianina breed was well represented in Supreme Row with the Chianina bull being selected as Supreme Champion over all breeds at the Nebraska State Fair! Congrats to the Satree’s on a well-deserved win! The Supreme Champion Heifer was also a Chianina shown by Hadley Dunklau! Congratulations to Hadley and the Dunklau family on a great win! Then it was back to South

Dakota for the 4-H and FFA shows over Labor Day weekend where the Champion Chianina Heifer went on to be 4th overall in the 4-H show! Congratulations to Haleigh Holt on your win with your Chiangus heifer! I then made a swing into Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and stops in South Dakota for visits with members having upcoming pasture and online sales. I believe in the last month I have been to over 30 places and logged over 6,000 miles looking at cattle and talking to members. Now for the interesting part of my next trip. I took off for Kansas and Oklahoma and everything was going well, then out of nowhere, BOOM, I blew the front tire on my vehicle! It was 5:30 pm on a Friday, barely had one bar cell phone reception on my phone and about 45 miles northwest of Lawton, OK! Let’s just say, that by 9:10 that night I was finally on the road again 2 and a half hours from where I had already booked a room for the night so I could make my herd visit I had set up for the next morning! There is more to the story that I will share with anyone who asks, but it probably shouldn’t be published in this article! Like I said earlier, I have seen some very good cattle in my travels and have been looking at cattle that will be consigned to the -C- The Difference Sale in Oklahoma City on January 8th 2022! If you have something you would like to put in the national sale give me a shout. Consignment forms are now available. If you are looking for a new herd bull, replacement heifers, bred heifers or even a show heifer, let me know and I can be on the lookout for you! E
ven as we continue to face uncertain times in the United States and more importantly in agriculture, the future within the Chianina breed is bright. Practically every breed association from their founding has had a cyclical rise and fall in memberships and registrations, some more than others. As most know, the ACA has struggled in the past recent years to grow, but we are finally seeing indicators that our breed is poised to experience a large increase in both memberships and registrations in the coming years, especially within the junior program. A prime example was the record number of entries and exhibitors this summer at the National Junior Heifer Show. We have a great staff to thank for a lot of this growth; it takes true leaders to host and organize a successful event. Our staff has gone above and beyond to see our breed succeed and that every member gets the help or opportunity they want or need. With great growth comes more demand, particularly for shows. The ACA staff, yet again, has answered that request and has answered it well. Our breeders and members will see more opportunity with involvement in nationally sanctioned shows like the American Royal in Kansas City, Mo. We’re also continuing our presence in Denver at the NWSS and at the Fort Worth Stock Show in Texas. New opportunity comes as well with the Great Northern Livestock Exposition in Cheyenne, Wyo. There was also an overwhelming amount of support and participation at the inaugural Cattleman’s Congress in Oklahoma City, making the decision to return a very simple one. The North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky., will return to “normal” this year and is fast approaching. What I believe has driven part of this growth is the recent addition of the Chi Composite show, offered at the NJHS, American Royal and Cattleman’s Congress. Giving those interested in becoming active in the ACA or AJCA the opportunity to start somewhere, especially if they’re passionate about showing, will only help boost those registrations and memberships. We’re deep into sale season and the demand for Chianina genetics is overwhelmingly high. As demand continues to grow, the board is looking into additional options for breeders to market their cattle, grow their customer base and broaden the footprint of our breed. As our breed continues to grow and more people become involved, we must not forget that many of us were once in their shoes. Lend a helping hand or some words of encouragement to those new folks and embrace their successes as you would your own. Each member matters just as much as next and every member is important to the success of this breed. Serving on this board has been an eye-opening experience for me. A lot of ups and downs and a whole lot of endless discussion because we collectively are working to build a better future for our cattle, our members, our staff and, most importantly, our kids. Hello from Kentucky! It’s crazy to think the North American will be here in a few short weeks. Farmers are in full swing harvesting crops, the weather is getting cooler and everyone is busy putting together their upcoming show string. For these reasons, fall is a really enjoyable time of year for the Evans family. As I’ve highlighted in the last few articles, the Auxiliary has experienced a great deal of change over the past couple years. As we work to continue to grow our membership and strengthen our ability to support AJCA members, we’re shifting our focus. What this means is that our presence at the National Junior Heifer Show will grow. With the tremendous success of the Auxiliary Social in Chickasha, the ACLA Directors believe foregoing the luncheon at NAILE is a smart financial decision. Our summer social will replace the “Come As You Are” Luncheon but we will continue to hold our annual meeting in conjunction with the ACA Annual Meeting in Louisville. We hope you can join us. As always, our fundraising efforts are continuing. Cookbooks and t-shirts will both be available for purchase in Louisville. $10 each or $15 if you’d rather have them shipped. Bulletin ACA Sire Directory Planned
Planning for the 2022 ACA Sire Directory is currently in the works and breeders are encouraged to add their bulls to the listing. The Sire Directory gives Chianina breeders and those outside the breed the opportunity to see what genetics are available. The Sire Directory will debut at the Cattlemen’s Congress in January and will be handed out throughout the spring and summer. Junior Membership Renewal Fee Increases on January 1
The ACA Board of Directors voted to increase the junior membership renewal fee from $25 to $50 starting January 1. This increase will provide all junior members a subscription to the ACJ, allowing them to receive the same benefits as our adult membership.
ACA Annual Meeting Notice
The ACA Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 16 at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. The meeting will begin at 1 pm in the West Hall. All active ACA members are invited to attend the meeting. Members will hear a recap of the ACA year and annual awards will be presented. ACA/University of Illinois Sire Test Update
T
he ACA Sire Test field day was on August 20 in Champaign, Ill., and hosted with the University of Illinois. Dr Dan Shike and his crew at the research farm, run by Miles Redden, do an outstanding job on research projects such as ours. They run three herds of cows which consist of an Angus herd, a Sim-Angus herd and then the commercial herd that our calves were raised on in Southern Illinois on fescue grass. This is a fall calving herd of cows. Here’s a little overview of the sire test and what we are looking to accomplish. The calves were born in September 2020 and were weaned around 100 days of age. The University weans all their fall calves at this age for management of the cows and to get the calves going before it gets muddy in the spring. They were then backgrounded in southern Illinois before being moved to the research farm in Champaign. The calves were started on the feed rations at the research farm and then started on the grow safe bunks on April 6. The cattle are weighed every 30 days to keep track of daily gains and conversion rates are figured. Docility scores, feet and dew claw scores and frame scores are being taken to compile as much data as possible to help promote the Chianina breed to the commercial sector of the industry. Promoting the lower birth weights of the Chianina-sired calves and the data on the reduced cost of gain to the growth of the calves on feed will help move the breed forward. The data we are collecting can be used to educate the commercial sector of the beef industry that Chianina-sired calves are more efficient with their feedstuffs and, as the cost of corn and other feed continues to rise, that puts more dollars in the cattleman’s pocket! This in turn should create more demand for our Chianina influenced bulls! The cattle will go to harvest the last week of November or the first week of December. Once they are harvested, Dr. Shike and his
crew will breakdown all the dry matter intakes, average daily gains and the cost of gain on all the animals. We will also have yield grade data as well as the percentage of calves that reached CAB status. Blood samples were pulled on all the cattle and will be tested to see if the science correlates with the real data of the calves. On the following pages is just a “mid-season” run down of how the cattle are doing individually, as well as a page of the averages for the sire groups. This is preliminary data but it gives an idea of how things are progressing on the test. The docility score is a chute score with 1 being stands and doesn’t move to 5 being worked up and fighting in chute. The docility scores as a whole are very good and the crew says the cattle are easy going and nice to work around. Converting from Percentages back to Fraction Classifications

Editor’s Note: The purpose of this article is to share information with the membership on the options of converting back to fraction classifications rather than percentages. The ACA board has discussed this information at numerous meetings and it was decided that the information should be shared with the membership in order to gauge interest. A survey will be sent to the membership, allowing you to share your opinions on this topic and all survey results will be reviewed before any decision is made.
How did we get here? •
Beginning with its inception in 1972, the ACA registered cattle using fractions. • Chiangus were created in 1976. • Chiford, Red Chiangus, and Chimaine were created in 1986. • Chimaine was replaced with Chianina in 2018. • At the March 12, 1999 meeting, the ACA Board of Directors met with CEO Terry Atchison, their CPA, attorney, and computer programmer. • The purpose of this meeting was to bring the three governing documents into alignment • Articles of Incorporation (must be approved by the Association membership) • Bylaws of the Association (must be approved by the Association membership) • Rules of Registration (must be approved by the ACA Board) • The Programmer recommended that the ACA convert from fractions to percentages. • The Board of Directors put the decisions to align the three documents to a vote of the membership. • Originally, the ACA registered cattle by fractions. • Quarter-bloods were the minimum fraction registered, but “Purebreds” were not registered as 8/8 or 16/16 (100%) as other associations had done. • The popularity of a single sire, BC Total Power 2CA, forced a change in the Rules of Registration. • Total Power was widely accepted as a sire, by Chiangus & Chianina breeders, and club calf producers. • Sired by BC Black Power 2CA (half-blood=50%) out of BC Ms Chi 1919-5571 1CA (7/16=43.75%); Total Power was 15/32=46.88% NOVEMBER 2021 | CHIANINA JOURNAL |

How did we get here? •

However, because the ACA did not round fractions, his progeny (out of Commercial or cows of other breeds) were 15/64 (1/64 below quarter-bloods) and were ineligible to be registered. • Therefore, the ACA Board of Directors lowered the minimum fraction to 1/8. • Later, the Rules of Registration were changed, requiring only one parent be registered in order to qualify calves for registration. • The Result: Chianina (versus Chiangus) breeders quit registering their replacements, because only 1 parent needed to be registered. • The Result: Percentages plummeted. • Finally, another ACA Board established the minimum percentage requirement to be 6.25% (1/16 blood) in order to show in national shows in order to stop the dilution of the amount of Chianina blood.
Meanwhile… •
Every other Continental breed association continued to register cattle by fraction classifications with 7/8 give “Purebred” (8/8) status (100% i.e. rounded up from 87.5% each purebred generation). • Additionally, virtually every other Continental breed association “rounded up”. • i.e. When mating a “Purebred” (7/8ish) to a 3/4, the progeny is “rounded up” to a Purebred (7/8) and given 100% breeding value (BV). Thus, given 8/8 factor with 100% digital value (DV). • i.e. The resulting progeny (sired by a 7/8ish out of a 3/4) are considered “Purebred” when, in fact, they are 13/16…which is 81.25%…and that is considering that ALL of their ancestors were fullbloods! • i.e. If the resulting progeny was sired by four generations that originated with an American Purebred… • “Purebred” (7/8 or 87.5%) x Angus = “Half Blood” (43.75%) • 7/8 x “Half Blood” = “3/4 Blood” (65.84%) • 7/8 x “3/4 Blood” = “Purebred” 76.67%) • This is a loss of 23.33% of Continental blood, simply by “breeding up” one cycle. • By using NO Fullblood Continental sires and using only “American Purebred” sires for 24 or more upbreeding generations will make cattle of any original Continental Fullblood breed to have between 30% to 40% “Fullblood DNA” in the “American Purebred” of that breed. • The other Continental associations did nothing wrong, but they gained a “HUGE” perception advantage by “Classifying” their “American Purebreds” as 100% Digital Value (DV) and 8/8 Breeding Value (BV) which is now “industry standard.”
The Result… •
Meanwhile…The ACA continues to register cattle using a method that makes us the laughing stock of the industry. We continue to lose credibility and marketing potential every time we register a calf using percentages. • The industry points at ACA registrations and makes remarks such as “anytime a bull walks by a pasture full of cows, their calves can be registered as Chianina.” • “You don’t have to have much (or any) Chi blood to register a calf.” • In reality, our pedigrees are ACCURATE, because the percentages are true representatives of the animals’ ACTUAL Italian Fullblood genetic makeup. • But, the industry only recognizes Chianina as “low percentage cattle” versus recognizing the other Continental breeds as Purebreds, 3/4, 5/8, 1/2, 3/8, 1/4…even though their actual percentage of their Fullblood ancestors is very small. It’s all about perception.

Through most of its history, the ACA has registered cattle by fractions.
• Going back to fraction classifications would align us with every other Continental breed registering cattle in the USA. • Fraction Classifications are understandable by “lay people” and are the “industry standards.” • Exhibiting cattle registered by fraction classifications (quarter-bloods up to purebreds) provides greater credibility to the Association and our breeders than cattle that have a minimum of 6.25% IFB genetics.
• Registering cattle by fraction classifications will do more to improve the perception of ACA breeds more than any other
action or marketing campaign that we could undertake. (And it’s a lot cheaper too!) • The continued loss of Italian Fullblood Chianina percentage over the next 5 to 10 years will only worsen, eroding the value and perceptions of breeding Chianina cattle. By going to fraction classifications and giving purebreds 100% DV and 8/8 BV, we will sustain breeding programs for ACA members and elevate our stature in the cattle industry, making us more competitive with other Continental breeds.

ACA Board of Directors Meeting June 21, 2021 • Chickasha, Okla. Dunklau called the meeting to order at 8:59 a.m. Roll Call Board members Present: Ryan Dunklau, Segayle Foster, Tyler Winegardner, Lyle Sexton, Ken Culp, Larry Garrett, Rob Sheets, Derek Evans, Mike Stoppel, Andy Higgins, Keith Schrick. Absent: Justin Tracy Staff present: Stephanie Snook and Dustin Hurlburt Officer’s Reports Secretary Report Foster read minutes from our February meeting and executive sessions. Garret made a motion to accept Secretary’s report and Schrick seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer Report Sexton gave a financial report. Net profit from Jan-April 2021 is $39,931.75 a 196% increase from Jan-April 2020. Staff Reports: Dustin gave a junior national report for Heather. Checked In: 18 prospect steers, 24 progress steers, 8 B&O bulls, 26 B&O Chi females, 14 B&O Chiangus, 41 Owned Chiangus, 149 Chi females, 82 Composite females. Show order: Wednesday 8 am: steers, bulls, B&O chis, B&O Chiangus and owned Chiangus; Thursday 8 am: Owned Chi followed by Owned Composite . The Chi Junior Fundraiser 6:30 p.m. tonight. Working Ranch Magazine contacted the ACA for list of breeders to contact for an article. Dustin passed along names of Dry Fork Ranch, Talmo Ranch & Kevin Huckabee to interview to promote Chi cattle.
Dustin and Ken met with Shike regarding the sire test and the staff is working on promotional items for the booth. The Sire Test Field Day will be Thursday, August 19 – Friday, August, 20 in Champagne, Ill. Registrations are currently 240 ahead of 2019. Memberships – 703 junior memberships. Committee Reports: LRP – Ken is proposing at the fall board meeting to breakout in committee meetings and assign them. Sire Test Update – Field Day is August 19-20 in Champaign, Ill. Still working out details on the agenda. Dr. Weaber will fly in and discuss genetic abnormality issues. Egg Extravaganza – Need to work on getting lots donated and a catalog put together for Louisville. Announce information during the grand drives of both shows. Dunk asked to go into executive session at 10:30 a.m. Foster second. Sheets moved to exit executive session. Culp second.
Premiums for Great Northern Livestock Expo in Wyoming. No action taken. October/November board articles – Ken/ Rob collaboration article and Evans. The board would like to commend Heather and Dustin for their great job done with the journal. Culp made a motion to increase the Junior renewal fee from $25 to $50, with all juniors receiving a journal effective Jan. 1, 2022. Keith seconded. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 1:20 pm.
New Business: Cow catch up registration moratorium – Culp moved to implement a cow catch up registration moratorium from July 1 – Aug 31 at a price of $30 per head. Higgins seconded. Motion carried. Percentages to Fractions – Sheets make the motion to convert registrations from percentages back to fractions. Schrick seconded. Motion failed 5-6. Evans made a motion to publish the power point presentation in the journal and other media outlets and direct members to a poll on how they feel on fractions vs percentages. Stoppel seconded. Motion carries. Low percentage show – Larry made a motion to add a composite show at OKC junior show, the NJHS and regional shows in 2022. Stoppel second.
