This year we are pleased to honor Emilia Saint-Amand Krimendahl with the prestigious Top Dog Award, which was created to recognize individuals for their unwavering support for AMC as well as their fervent belief in the human-animal bond. We celebrate Emilia’s passion for animals, her generosity to AMC and in particular the Gift of Love capital campaign, and her longstanding commitment to AMC through her service on the Board of Trustees. Tonight, we also honor some very special dogs—Memorial Sloan Kettering's Caring Canines and PK9 Yoda—for their exceptional ability, heroism, and selflessness in times of need. You can see photos and learn more about the incredible work of these dogs and their handlers on pages 6-9.

EMILIA S AINT-AMAND KRIMENDAHL We are delighted to honor Emilia Saint-Amand Krimendahl with the prestigious Top Dog Award, which was created to recognize individuals for their unwavering commitment to AMC as well as their fervent belief in the human-animal bond. Emilia’s dedication to our mission is demonstrated not only by her service on the board since 2003, but also as a generous donor and strong proponent of compassionate care for companion animals. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate both her philanthropy and leadership. Emilia started her work on behalf of AMC’s mission, when her friend and former Board Chair, Cynthia Phipps, asked her to join the Top Dog journal committee. After several years of hard work and dedication, Emilia was then asked to join the Board, and she has served as a steadfast member of the Development Committee since then. For many years, Emilia also served as a Top Dog Gala Co-Chair. Emilia’s career included jobs in both the corporate and nonprofit sectors. Upon retirement, she joined the Board of City Harvest in New York City and ARF in the Hamptons, in addition to her role at AMC. Emilia and her late husband, Fred Krimendahl, had a myriad of interests in New York and elsewhere. Fred was president of the New York Philharmonic for ten years. He also served on numerous boards, including Lincoln Center, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and the Ohio State Foundation Board, from which he sponsored numerous scholarships for over 40 years. Fred and Emilia also supported The Morgan Library and Museum, and Emilia is still a Member of the Morgan’s Directors Roundtable. Other of her interests and beneficiaries include the New York City Ballet, Duke University (her alma mater) and Duke Gardens, the Central Park Conservancy, and African Parks. In addition, Emilia continues to be a major supporter of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New York Philharmonic, where she is a member of the Leonard Bernstein Circle. AMC has cared with great love, and professionalism, for Morgan, Rhett Butler, Elvis, and now her beloved Freddy.

These therapy dogs and their handlers provide comfort and support to not only our patients but our staff as well. They create a healing and compassionate environment for those they meet. PK9 YODA U. S. B O R DER PATR O L B ORTAC Yoda is a Belgian Malinois and was born in the Netherlands in August 2019. He began his career as a Patrol K9 with the U.S. Border Patrol in May of 2022. He is assigned to the Detroit Sector, Special Operations Detachment, Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC). Yoda’s main skillset is location and apprehension of criminals. Yoda specializes in high-risk situations that his BORTAC team responds to such as warrant services, conveyance assaults, hostage operations, tactical tracking, air operations, and more. Yoda has served on countless high-risk operations alongside his BORTAC team. To date, these operations have yielded seizures of a significant amount of illicit narcotics, over $850,000 in U.S. currency, 56 firearms, and 38 arrests. While most operations take place in our BORTAC area of responsibility, Yoda and his BORTAC team can deploy nationwide to aid other federal, state, and local law enforcement partners. Yoda has deployed to numerous nationally significant events. Most noteworthy was the manhunt for Danelo Cavalcante. In September 2023, Yoda and his BORTAC team deployed to Chester County, PA. The mission was to locate and apprehend Danelo Cavalcante. Cavalcante was illegally present in the U.S. and wanted in his home country of Brazil for a 2017 double homicide. Additionally, Cavalcante was currently serving a life sentence in Chester County jail for the 2021 murder of his girlfriend Deborah Brandao. Cavalcante escaped from Chester County jail on August 31, 2023, thus beginning a 14-day manhunt throughout rural Chester County. The terrain and weather added to the difficulty of this operation. The woods were extremely thick, overgrown with thorns, vines, and many large fallen dead trees. The dense terrain forced Operators to crawl through some sections of the woods and traverse small rivers to continue movement. The weather was unrelenting. With temperatures hovering around the mid 90’s, extremely high humidity, and lack of cloud cover produced some of the worst conditions for working dogs. On September 13th, 2023, with help from many other agencies, Yoda and his BORTAC team successfully located and apprehended Cavalcante. Yoda was able to physically apprehend the subject by biting him. This prevented his escape and his ability to use the stolen rifle he possessed.

The project paves the way for a major reorganization of the facility, improving the delivery of service to more patients and enhancing our education and research activities.
