rom time to time, the Deseret News has produced special issues on topics of interest to our audience. These topics have ranged from education to sports.

Because of the proliferation of temples in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in recent years, we felt a special Deseret News issue focusing on temples would provide a service to many of our readers. This special Deseret News magazine features articles on early temples in Kirtland, Ohio, and Nauvoo, Illinois; the renovation of the historic Salt Lake Temple; new temple building methods; and a list — including notable facts — of every temple in the Church. Both President Dallin H. Oaks — the prophet and president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — and his predecessor, the late President Russell M. Nelson, have underscored the importance of temples.
“Temple teachings center on Jesus Christ, whose house this is,” said President Oaks before dedicating the Urdaneta Philippines Temple. “All that is taught here relates to our Savior. This is His house. This is His work and the work of His Father.” Speaking during the October 2025 general conference, President Oaks also emphasized a focus on the temple. “We will now move forward in providing the ordinances of the temple to members of the Church throughout the world, including when and where to announce the construction of new temples,” he said. A
s temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints increasingly dot the earth, Church leaders have continued to teach the importance of temples and the covenants made within temples. In the dedicatory prayer of the Kirtland Temple in 1836, the Prophet Joseph Smith petitioned Heavenly Father “that thy servants may go forth from this house armed with thy power” and “that no combination of wickedness shall … rise up and prevail over thy people upon whom thy name shall be put in this house” (Doctrine and Covenants 109:22, 26). President Dallin H. Oaks, President of the Church, has taught that the endowment ceremonies in the Nauvoo Temple prepared the pioneers and gave them the strength for the challenge of crossing the plains and arriving in the Salt Lake Valley. And he’s compared that time period of the Church with the present.
“The building of multiple temples throughout the world is likely to be serving the same purpose to prepare the covenant children of the Lord with the strength they need to face what is ahead,” he said at the Mesa Arizona Temple dedication in December 2021. President Oaks has also taught how essential temples are to “our Heavenly Father’s plan for His children.” Speaking at the dedication of the Richmond Virginia Temple in May 2023, he said, “In these houses of the Lord, we are taught the most important things we can learn in mortality, the knowledge of eternity.” The following quotes include teachings from current Church leaders on the blessings that come to those who focus on the temple and their temple covenants.

TO BLESS THE COVENANT CHILDREN OF GOD “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is constructing temples all over the world. Their purpose is to bless the covenant children of God with temple worship and with the sacred responsibilities and powers and unique blessings of being bound to Christ they receive by covenant. “The Church of Jesus Christ is known as a Church that emphasizes making covenants with God. Covenants are inherent in each of the ordinances of salvation and exaltation this restored Church administers. The ordinance of baptism and its associated covenants are requirements for entrance into the celestial kingdom. The ordinances and associated covenants of the temple are requirements for exaltation in the celestial kingdom, which is eternal life, ‘the greatest of all the gifts of God.’ That is the focus of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” — President Dallin H. TO RECEIVE THE ORDINANCES OF SALVATION AND EXALTATION “Under President [Russell M.] Nelson's inspired leadership, the Lord has accelerated, and will continue to accelerate, the building of temples across the world. This will allow all of God’s children the opportunity to receive the ordinances of salvation and exaltation and to make and keep sacred covenants. Qualifying to make sacred covenants is not a one-time effort but a lifetime pattern. The Lord has said it will take our full heart, might, mind, and strength. “Frequent participation in the ordinances of the temple can create a pattern of devotion to the Lord. When you keep your temple covenants and remember them, you invite the companionship of the Holy Ghost to both strengthen and purify you. “You may then experience a feeling of light and hope testifying that the promises are true. You will come to know that every covenant with God is an opportunity to draw closer to Him, which will then create a desire in your heart to keep temple covenants.”

SELFLESS AND HOLY SERVICE “Temples are an unyielding witness that goodness will prevail. President George Q. Cannon (1827–1901), first counselor in the First Presidency, once said, ‘Every foundation stone that is laid for a temple, and every temple completed … lessens the power of Satan on the earth and increases the power of God and godliness.’ “While each temple increases the influence of righteousness in the earth, the greatest blessings, of course, come to those who actually attend the temple. There we receive further light and knowledge and make solemn covenants that, if followed, help us walk in the path of discipleship. In short, the temple teaches us about the sacred purpose of life and helps us get our true physical and spiritual bearings. “We do not attend the temple for ourselves only, however. Each time we enter these sacred edifices, we play a role in the hallowed, redemptive work of salvation made available to all of God’s children as a result of the Atonement of the Only Begotten of the Father. This is a selfless and holy service and one that allows us as mortals to participate in the glorious work of becoming saviors on Mount Zion.

LIVE WITH AN ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE “By making and keeping temple covenants, we learn more about the Lord’s purposes and receive a fulness of the Holy Ghost. We receive direction for our lives. We mature in our discipleship so that we do not remain perpetual, unknowing children. Rather, we live with an eternal perspective and are more motivated to serve God and others. We receive increased capacity to fulfill our purposes in mortality. We are protected from evil, and we gain greater power to resist temptation and to repent when we stumble. When we falter, the memory of our covenants with God helps us return to the path. By connecting to God’s power, we become our own pororoca, able to go against the flow of the world, throughout our lives and into the eternities. Ultimately, our destinies are changed because the covenant path leads to exaltation and eternal life. “Keeping covenants made in baptismal fonts and in temples also provides us with strength to withstand mortality’s trials and heartaches. The doctrine associated with these covenants eases our way and provides hope, comfort and peace.”

THE SAFEST PLACE TO BE SPIRITUALLY President Russell M. Nelson — who died Sept. 27 at age 101 — spoke often on the importance of temples, temple covenants and the promised blessings that come to those who focus on the temple. During his administration of nearly eight years as President of the Church, he announced 200 new temple locations.
“Whenever any kind of upheaval occurs in your life, the safest place to be spiritually is living inside your temple covenants! “Please believe me when I say that when your spiritual foundation is built solidly upon Jesus Christ, you have no need to fear. As you are true to your covenants made in the temple, you will be strengthened by His power. Then, when spiritual earthquakes occur, you will be able to stand strong because your spiritual foundation is solid and immovable.”

A LOOK AT 50 YEARS OF TEMPLE GROWTH
After its 1830 organization in New York, the Church ended the 19th century with four temples — all in the state of Utah. Then through the first half of the 20th century, the Church doubled the number of its houses of the Lord to eight, with temples in Hawaii, Canada, Arizona and Idaho. The 1950s saw new temples in Switzerland, California, New Zealand and England, with additional temples over the next decade and a half being added in Utah (two), California and Washington, D.C. The greatest growth in temple numbers for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has come in the last 50 years, from 1976 to 2025. Houses of the Lord are found in or have been announced for every inhabited continent, in 75 countries and 46 states and territories of the United States. That increase is evident in the accompanying graphics showing temple growth over the past 50 years.

he Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been organized for nearly 200 years and has a current total of just under 400 temples — 382, to be precise — that are dedicated, under construction or in planning.

But the simple math of dividing the total temples by the number of years doesn’t work here — one can’t assume the Church added a temple or two every year of its existence so far.

The first push came in the early 1980s, when 23 new temples were dedicated under the administrations of President Spencer W. Kimball and President Ezra Taft Benson, both aided by President Gordon B. Hinckley as a First Presidency counselor. Of the 23, 16 were outside of the United States — from Tokyo to Tonga, from Mexico City to Manila and from Johannesburg to Freiberg, Germany, the latter behind the Iron Curtain at the time. Later as President of the Church, President Hinckley announced an ambitious effort to close the 20th century with 100 dedicated houses of the Lord worldwide, The goal was met and slightly surpassed, with 16 new temples dedicated in 1999 and another 34 in 2000 — including several instances of two temples being dedicated over the same weekend or even on the same day.
And President Russell M. Nelson led the most recent charge of new temple growth, announcing 200 new temple locations in the nearly eight years as President of the Church until his death on Sept. 27, 2025. During that time, 49 houses of the Lord were dedicated — despite an 18-month moratorium on temple dedications because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting restrictions on public gatherings. n Jan. 2, 1831, the Lord instructed the Saints to “go to the Ohio,” where the He promised they would receive His law and “be endowed with power from on high” (Doctrine and Covenants 38:32-33).
Ten years later, despite intense pressure to leave Illinois, a second house of the Lord was dedicated in Nauvoo to allow the Saints to make sacred covenants and receive their temple blessings before crossing the plains.
Almost two years later, Dec. 27, 1832, the Lord commanded the Saints to build a temple. “Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God” (Doctrine and Covenants 88:119).
These first two houses of the Lord bestowed significant blessings on the early Saints. Joseph Smith said, “What was the object of gathering the … people of God in any age of the world? ... The main object was to build unto the Lord a house whereby He could reveal unto His people the ordinances of His house and the glories of His kingdom, and teach the people the way of salvation; for there are certain ordinances and principles that, when they are taught and practiced, must be done in a place or house built for that purpose.”
These revelations led to the construction and dedication of the Kirtland Temple in 1836, the first house of the Lord built in this dispensation by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

THE KIRTLAND TEMPLE The Ohio Saints were commanded to begin building the temple in December 1832, but there was little progress over the next six months.
Between 1833 and 1836, the Saints in Kirtland sacrificed time and money beyond their means to construct the house of the Lord, despite limited skills and strained Church finances.
In June 1833, the Lord rebuked the Saints “for their failure to build the house of the Lord” (Doctrine and Covenants 95). Work immediately began and the Lord gave the First Presidency a remarkable vision in which they saw detailed plans for the temple.
Artemus Millett, from Canada, joined the Church and provided funds and expertise for the temple’s construction. Other members, like Vienna Jacques, John Tanner and Thomas Grover, contributed significant amounts to finance the project. Skilled carpenters, including Jacob Bump, Truman Angell and Brigham Young, enhanced the building’s beauty with their expertise.
Frederick G. Williams, then second counselor in the First Presidency, later described the vision. “We went upon our knees,” he wrote, “called on the Lord, and the building appeared within viewing distance: I being the first to discover it. Then all of us viewed it together. After we had taken a good look at the exterior, the building seemed to come right over us.” The finished building, he wrote, “seemed to coincide with that I there saw to a minutia.”
Temple construction slowed in spring and summer 1834 as most men joined Joseph Smith’s Camp of Israel march to Missouri, assisting Saints displaced by mob violence. During that time, some women took on roles such as masonry work, driving cattle, hauling rock and making clothing for the workers. According to ChurchofJesusChrist.org, children helped by collecting broken dishes and glassware, which were added to the stucco to make it glisten in the sun.
On July 23, 1833, the First Presidency presided over a temple cornerstone ceremony. A limestone quarry a few miles from the temple provided stone for the temple walls, and a sawmill built and operated through the consecrated service of the Saints supplied wood for the interior.

DEDICATED AND ACCEPTED On March 27, 1836, around 800 people gathered for the Kirtland Temple dedication, although some were turned away. The meeting lasted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Lord accepted the temple, blessing the Saints with a pentecostal outpouring of angelic and divine manifestations. Eliza R. Snow wrote: “The ceremonies of that dedication may be rehearsed, but no mortal language can describe the heavenly manifestations of that memorable day. Angels appeared to some, while a sense of divine presence was realized by all present.” In the dedicatory prayer, recorded in Doctrine and Covenants 109, Joseph Smith said, “We ask thee, O Lord, to accept of this house, the workmanship of the hands of us, thy servants, which thou didst command us to build.” One week later on April 3, Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery experienced a series of remarkable visitations. First, the Lord Jesus Christ appeared and declared that He had accepted the temple as His house and promised, “I will manifest myself to my people in mercy in this house” (Doctrine and Covenants 110:7). Ancient prophets Moses, Elias and Elijah then appeared to commit their priesthood keys for the gathering of Israel, the dispensation of the gospel of Abraham and the sealing power. Church President Russell M. Nelson taught in April 2024 general conference: “The significance of these keys being returned to the earth by three heavenly messengers under the direction of the Lord cannot be overstated. ... These keys authorized Joseph Smith — and all succeeding presidents of the Lord’s Church — to gather Israel on both sides of the veil, to bless all covenant children with the blessings of Abraham, to place a ratifying seal on priesthood ordinances and covenants, and to seal families eternally. The power of these priesthood keys is infinite and breathtaking.” In 1838, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon fled Kirtland, taking their families to Missouri. By 1841, most Latter-day Saints had left northeastern Ohio. The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, later known as Community of Christ, gained legal ownership of the Kirtland Temple in February 1880.

NAUVOO TEMPLE Although portions of the Nauvoo Temple were unfinished, the entire house of the Lord was dedicated on May 1, 1846.
After the Saints relocated from Missouri to Nauvoo in 1839, land for a new temple in Nauvoo was secured in 1840. The following year, a revelation (see Doctrine and Covenants 124:55) commanded Church members to build a new house of the Lord. The cornerstones were laid three months later on April 6, 1841.
The Saints were forced to abandon the Nauvoo Temple. It was later destroyed by an arson fire in 1848, and much of the stone structure was toppled by a tornado in 1850.
For the next four years, Church members labored and sacrificed to build the house of the Lord. Work halted temporarily when Joseph and Hyrum Smith were killed in June 1844, but it soon resumed with increased intensity as members eagerly sought to complete the temple and receive its promised blessings. In the fall of 1845, the Saints faced harassment and pressure to leave the state, but they were determined to complete the temple so worthy members could receive temple ordinances before leaving for the West. By early February 1846, more than 6,000 Saints had received the promised endowment. One was Sarah Rich, who recorded: “Many were the blessings we had received in the house of the Lord, which has caused us joy and comfort in the midst of all our sorrows and enabled us to have faith in God knowing He would guide us and sustain us in the unknown journey that lay before us, for if it had not been for the faith and knowledge that was bestowed upon us in that temple by the influence and help of the Spirit of the Lord our journey would have been like one taking a leap in the dark” (“As Long as the World Shall Stand, BYU devotional, Jan. 19, 2021).

KIRTLAND AND NAUVOO TEMPLES TODAY Nearly 150 years later, President Gordon B. Hinckley announced the rebuilding of the Nauvoo Temple on April 2, 1999. The temple was rebuilt with the same exterior design and footprint as the original, while the interior was adapted for modern temple worship needs.

The Nauvoo Illinois Temple was dedicated by President Hinckley on June 27, 2002, marking the anniversary of the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. The Nauvoo Temple now sits at the center of a Historic Nauvoo, an area consisting of historic buildings, homes and other attractions.
Less than a month later on March 25, 2024, senior missionaries guided the first public tours of the temple after the acquisition — two days shy of the 188th anniversary of the dedication of the Kirtland Temple on March 27, 1836. While retaining the “temple” name, the Kirtland Temple will not be used for sacred ordinances and worship as the Church of Jesus Christ’s other houses of the Lord worldwide; rather is considered and used as a historic site where visitors can tour the building and occasional religious and community meetings are held.
After gaining ownership of the Kirtland Temple in 1880, Community of Christ preserved and maintained it until March 5, 2024, when it was announced in a joint statement that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had acquired the Kirtland Temple, along with other historic properties, documents and artifacts.

en years after the groundbreaking of the historic Salt Lake Temple, Brigham Young urged that the structure be “built in a manner that it will endure through the Millennium.”
Salt Lake City’s house of the Lord, said the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in October 1863, would “stand as a proud monument of the faith, perseverance and industry of the Saints of God in the mountains.” Now 162 years later, this monument — the faith’s testament to divine assistance and pioneer strength — is under extensive renovations for three main reasons: to upgrade the building seismically, preserve the historic craftsmanship and double the capacity of the temple. “We promise you that you will love the results,” said the late Church President Russell M. Nelson in an April 19, 2019, press conference. “They will emphasize and highlight the life, ministry and mission of Jesus Christ in His desire to bless every nation, kindred, tongue and people.” He noted the project will enhance, refresh and beautify the temple and surrounding grounds.

August 2021: The jack-and-bore process began beneath the temple foundation, installing reinforced concrete beams as part of the seismic upgrade. November 2021: With excavation work nearing completion north of the house of the Lord, concrete was poured to create a level foundation for the north temple addition.
Since the temple’s closure on Dec. 29, 2019, renovations have worked toward massive seismic retrofitting, installing audiovisual systems to allow the endowment to be presented in more than 90 languages and allowing greater accessibility and closer compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
November 2021: Demolition began on the North Visitors’ Center to make room for new gardens and restroom facilities. May 3, 2023: The first of 98 base isolators was placed on the new footing of the temple; these isolators will allow the temple to move horizontally up to 5 feet in any direction during an earthquake.
A 100,000-square-foot underground north addition is in the works — to double one baptistry to two and increase 13 sealing rooms to 22. A tunnel was also drilled beneath North Temple Street to connect the Conference Center’s parking to the temple’s new underground entrance.
Feb. 13, 2024: The final of six reinforcing steel pyramids was placed atop the temple, the first of which had been placed in summer 2023.
In an October 2021 Church News video titled “Worthy of the Temple,” President Nelson used three words to describe this mountainous project: massive, amazing, inspiring.
April 2, 2024: The iconic statue of the angel Moroni was placed atop the center-east tower after a four-year absence.
“To see that we can actually prolong the life of what Brigham Young and his colleagues did in the 19th century — well, it’s just been a thrill from start to finish,” he said. President Nelson announced in a Feb. 14 social media post earlier this year that the Salt Lake Temple will hold a public open house from April to October 2027. “We warmly invite our friends to come and learn about God’s plan for His children and rejoice in the love of Jesus Christ.” The following is a brief timeline of key Salt Lake Temple renovations in recent years: April 19, 2019: In a press conference on Temple Square, President Nelson announced plans for renovating the Salt Lake Temple and its adjoining properties. Dec. 29, 2019: The Salt Lake Temple was closed to be decommissioned and renovated. Jan. 17, 2020: Demolition work began on the Temple Square South Visitors’ Center and parts of the square’s south wall to prepare the grounds for excavation. May 18, 2020: The statue of the angel Moroni and capstone beneath it were removed to be refurbished. January 2021: Stones along the upper walls of the Salt Lake Temple were removed for cleaning and repair. May 2021: Crews began adding steel trusses to the temple roof for seismic reinforcement.

n October 2000, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dedicated the Boston Massachusetts Temple as the 100th house of the Lord in this dispensation.
Now, just 25 years later, there are 210 dedicated Latter-day Saint temples around the world, with 172 more announced and under construction. Bishop W. Christopher Waddell, first counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, said the Church can no longer take five or 10 years to build a temple and keep up. He continued, saying the Church needs to find ways “to be more productive, to use sacred resources more effectively.” One of the ways the Church is striving to use sacred resources more effectively is through design-manufacture-install technology.

This technique was first used on the Helena Montana Temple, which was dedicated in 2023. Its dedication took place just two years and three months after its announcement in the April 2021 general conference — the second-fastest turnaround in the past two decades, after The Gila Valley Arizona Temple. “I am just astonished and marvel at the miracle that I am seeing of a temple done in two years,” said Elder Arnulfo Valenzuela, a member of the Presidency of the Seventy, in a Deseret News article. “I am sure this new design-manufacture-install technology has worked in filling the need of having temples closer to the people in a faster time, in an efficient way.” WHAT DOES THE PROCESS LOOK LIKE? The Helena temple’s design-manufacture-install process began at a 50-acre facility in Bessemer, Alabama, where 25 modules were constructed. The modules were produced by Blox, a company that previously used modular construction for hospital emergency rooms and isolation-care units during COVID-19 bed shortages. “The temple program is exquisite. It’s sacred,” said Blox CEO Chris Giattina in a ChurchofJesusChrist.org report. “It is not just something that you casually go about. The first part of that was trying to understand what it was, what it really meant to do a temple.” Once completed, the modules were shrink wrapped and shipped to Helena, where they were stitched together by Haskell — a global architectural, engineering and construction company — to form a temple in just two weeks. The exterior stone cladding, the tower assembly and all electrical, plumbing, heating, cooling and ventilation systems were also done on-site.

Blox project director Corinne Ambler said quality is what differentiates the Church from any other client she’s worked with.
This process was also used to complete the Casper Wyoming Temple, which was dedicated November 2024, just over three and a half years after its announcement.
During the Richmond Virginia Temple open house, Elder Kevin R. Duncan — a General Authority Seventy and then-executive director of the Church’s Temple Department — explained one reason the Church invests so much time and effort into temples.
“We are building now for the future,” President Russell M. Nelson said when he announced both the Casper and Helena temples. “We want to bring the house of the Lord even closer to our members, that they may have the sacred privilege of attending the temple as often as their circumstances allow.”
“[God] has spared no expense in giving us the most beautiful earth that we have to live on. And because we’re building His house, we strive to give our very best — our very best craftsmanship, the very best materials that we can.”

GRATITUDE FOR THE HELENA MONTANA TEMPLE To show their appreciation for Blox and Haskell workers during the construction of the Helena Montana Temple, Church members in the Helena Montana Stake put together 500 gratitude packets.
An article about the Casper Wyoming Temple stated the construction process would increase the temple’s climate resilience and lower long-term maintenance demands. The article also noted the design-manufacture-install process can reduce construction cost.
Each envelope held a picture of the Helena temple colored by local Primary children, a letter of testimony and gratitude from youth and adults and a small packet of jerky.
“The Lord has blessed us with technology to do things in a more efficient way, in a faster way,” said Elder Valenzuela. “We are taking advantage of all technologies.”
“What was great about the project was it brought the stake together to really contemplate what a blessing the temple is and how appreciative we are of it,” said Helena Montana Stake

Romney. “It raised the level of appreciation because we had to express it.” When the first 150 packets arrived at the Blox facility in Alabama, manufacturing line foreman Scott Sink took it upon himself to ensure that all who had a hand in the temple project would know where the cards and letters came from, the significance behind them and where they would be displayed. With his wife and children, Sink created a display of pictures and notes on the main wall of the plant break room. Once the massive break room wall — more than a dozen feet high and some 20 feet long — was filled, more letters and pictures were posted on adjacent walls. When similar packages were delivered to the temple site in Montana, every letter was read and hung on the Haskell trailer wall or taken home by a worker. “When we had a new crew arrive, we would have a pre-construction meeting with them to go over the rules of the site — and we would also have them each read a letter out loud,” said Chris Haueter, a Haskell project manager, who noted tears were often shed during those readings. “This was done to impress upon them the importance of the work they were doing and inspire them to do their best.”

Notable: The Church’s oldest operating temple, the St. George temple was also the first house of the Lord where Latter-day Saints could perform all temple ordinances for the dead. Prior to the dedication, President Young directed that temple ordinances — previously passed down by memory and word of mouth — be written down, ensuring wording consistency and long-term availability.

The Manti temple was publicly dedicated on May 21, 1888, by Elder Lorenzo Snow of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who read President Woodruff’s prayer from the private dedication. President Young dedicated the site of the Manti temple on his way home from dedicating the St. George Utah Temple.

Great Salt Lake Valley, President Young announced both a temple and its exact location, driving his cane into the hard ground and saying, “Here we will build a temple to our God.” The Salt Lake Temple closed Dec. 19, 2019, for an extensive interior and exterior renovation as part of the restorations of pioneer-era temples, as announced by President Nelson; in February 2025, President Nelson announced a public open house for the restored house of the Lord to run from April 2027 to October 2027.

Because of multiple nationalities of members in the temple district, the Toronto temple’s dedicatory sessions were translated into six languages — French, Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Cantonese and Korean.
Church president. Rededicated: June 19, 2022, by Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Announced: Oct. 3, 1992, by President Hinckley in general conference. Notable: In July 1992, President Hinckley and others toured a half-dozen possible sites for a temple, but every location was too small and overpriced. That night, President Hinckley awoke with an inspired idea to demolish the Hong Kong mission home and office and a nearby chapel to construct a multipurpose building. He then drew rough sketches for a building with a temple on the upper floors and other functions on lower floors.

The idea to rebuild the Nauvoo Temple first came when President Hinckley’s father, Bryant S. Hinckley, was serving as president of a mission that included Nauvoo, Illinois. Bryant Hinckley presented the idea to the First Presidency in 1939, but due to the Great Depression, the Church wasn’t in a financial position to rebuild a temple at that time, so the idea was turned down. Dedication of the Nauvoo Illinois Temple took place on the 158th anniversary of Joseph Smith’s June 27, 1844, martyrdom. The Nauvoo Illinois Temple was the first temple dedication to be broadcast by satellite internationally via satellite to 2,300 locations throughout 72 countries and in 38 languages.
