Editor’s Message So we survived the beast (and beast-ette) from the East! As I’m sure you can all appreciate, more than most, it set us back slightly in terms of deliveries but based on some of the sights we experienced I didn’t have too many complaints about it! Hopefully now we have changed over to British Summertime, there should be no more of that white fluffy stuff. Having said that, I appreciate that there are a lot of people that enjoy the snow and can’t get enough, but seriously, how many times do you have to dig your way out of your own driveway for it to stop being fun!

Bad News: Oscar the foster dog has left the building ☹ Good News: New foster dog Flake is inbound. We’re not sure what to expect with Flake so, no doubt it will be chaotic but we’re excited and happy to help another little spaniel in need. Check out www. spanielaid.co.uk if you are interested in becoming a fosterer or if you are interested in re-homing a spaniel, it is a great charity that does amazing work.

Book Review
There was a time, back in the 60s, when living simply and getting back to the land was an ideal for some people. Even now living off-grid, away from the problems of civilisation, has its allure for many frazzled city dwellers. Except it may not turn out like that. In Elmet by Fiona Mozley, Daniel and his sister live in a house built by their Daddy in a copse in the middle of rural Yorkshire. He has taken the land which he says was owed to his dead wife and brings the children up to be independent, home-schooled, and able to turn their hand to anything. They grow their own food, barter for things they need and live without technology. They know everything about animals and the countryside and they are a strong family. In many ways it sounds like an idyll. But living on the edge of society has dark edges and over time those edges creep closer and closer to their home. The little sanctuary in the woods isn’t theirs it seems and when that becomes apparent the family’s certainties start to dissolve. This story is like a Yorkshire fable, brutal and violent in places, told very simply from the perspective of a child and as an adult you often have to fill in the missing bits yourself. It’s Fiona Mozley’s first novel and it’s a haunting original book.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ April 2018
Time to start planting outdoors again. Hardy annuals such as cornflower, nasturtiums and foxgloves can be grown from seed where they are to flower. If you want to give them a head start you might cover the planting area with fleece or plastic for a few days before sowing to warm the soil up and don’t sow if the ground is waterlogged. Create a crumbly tilth in the soil and scatter seeds for a natural look – but scatter thinly so they don’t crowd each other out. Then cover with a thin garden fleece for a few days to stop the birds getting at the seeds. You may need to thin out again later.
VALLEY POND & GARDEN MAINTENANCE • Grass cutting, weeding, etc • Koi sales and dry goods •
• Filter maintenance
Cut back any dead foliage of perennials to allow new growth to come through. This is a good time to cut smoke plant (cotinus) back pretty hard to encourage lots of those beautiful new leaves without stopping the frothy flowers later in summer. Plant lilies in pots, three to a 12 inch pot, about 5-6 inches deep, but watch it if you have cats that munch on the garden. All parts of a lily are poisonous to them.
Top Tip!
Forget-me-nots make a delightful spring carpet and often seem to appear in your garden without your having planted them. Once they’ve finished flowering though do heave a good proportion out. They’ll selfseed like mad and overwhelm less robust plants if left to run riot.

A Friendly Local Helping Hand With an estimated one million older people in the UK experiencing chronic loneliness, it is reassuring to hear that a friendly helping hand is available locally. Readycall Macmillan provides befriending and practical support to vulnerable or isolated people aged 60 and over across the communities of the Derbyshire Dales. Volunteers are matched with someone who would like a regular visitor, or assistance with light practical tasks – anything from getting to grips with the internet, to dog walking or shopping! The service can also provide lifts to hospital for cancer related appointments at a subsidised rate. A weekly visit from a volunteer can make all the difference to a person who doesn’t have the chance to talk to someone regularly. It can be equally rewarding for the volunteer, as a befriender, Nick tells us “I enjoy it and look forward to my visits – it’s nice to feel helpful and it gives me the opportunity to talk and interact with someone. If you’re considering volunteering with Readycall, I’d say ‘just
22
give it a go’ if you enjoy being with people and have time to spare” Readycall have offices in Bakewell and Ashbourne and operate throughout the Derbyshire Dales. They are funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and operate under the umbrella of Voluntary Community Services Peaks & Dales, a registered charity.
