Editor’s Message One of the great things about taking on this magazine is that with each passing month we have the opportunity to explore more of the peaks little by little, especially with the (mostly) beautiful weather. Our dog Rafa especially enjoys it and although he’s not a fan of car trips, he definitely thinks it is worth the wait! And I’m sure that he will feel the same this month when he finally gets to attend Dogs unleashed! He’s been asking to go for years but we’ve almost always been on holiday, so this year we are heading to the Bakewell showground for a special dog lovers day and we can hardly wait! I look forward to telling you all about it next month. On another note, we’ve just notified our winners of the Outdoor Theatre Competition which is starting this month. Really well done! We’re looking forward to hearing all about your experience and fingers crossed the winners will write a little something for us to print. Thanks again for everyone’s continued support, each month we are getting a little slicker and we couldn’t do any of this without the readers, advertisers and distributors alike! Happy Reading,

Slimming World Recipe Country Style Potato Salad Summer has arrived! And with it alfresco dining, picnics, BBQs or just lunch in the garden. This dish is perfect for such occasions as a flavour packed meal in itself or it goes perfectly with grilled fish or meat. And don’t forget there’s plenty more recipes online or find out more at your local group! Serves 4 Ready in: 30-60 mins Syns per serving: 1 & 1/2
Method:
Ingredients: • 500g waxy new potatoes diced • 1½ tbsp. cider vinegar • 6 level tbsp. extra light mayo • 50g fat free natural fromage frais • 200g very low fat or fat free natural cottage cheese
1. Boil the diced potatoes in salted water until cooked and then drain. Put them in a mixing bowl and sprinkle with the vinegar and leave to stand for 10 minutes
• Salt and pepper
2. Whisk together the mayonnaise, fromage frais and mustard and season well
• 4 plum tomatoes roughly chopped
3. Add the potatoes and rest of the ingredients and toss well until combined
• 3 hard-boiled eggs roughly chopped

Book Review
It’s always interesting to see a writer from another country finding an audience in the UK. Robert Seethaler is Viennese by birth and his first book to hit our shores was A Whole Life, shortlisted for last year’s Man Booker prize. Now we have The Tobacconist, a slim but powerful novel which takes us to the period just before the second world war as Germany annexed Austria, and the storm which engulfed the world was about to begin. 17-year-old Franz leaves the idyllic protection of the Austrian lakes and his mother for the excitement of Vienna and a job in a tobacconist shop which counts Professor Sigmund Freud as one of its customers. This is partly a rites of passage book – Professor Freud dispenses romantic advice to Franz and Franz reciprocates with cigars which he buys the old man so he can share his company for a short while. Meanwhile the Cabaret-style nightclubs give us a peepshow into the seedy side of Viennese life and the march of history takes over. The local postman notices that letters and packages to the houses of Jewish people are routinely opened, but is unconcerned because it does not affect his life. Violence and the banality of evil spills over into everyday life almost by stealth. What people think is the truth is changed by “alternative” facts. – Fake news anyone? As one character says, it is not the truth we remember, but whatever is yelled loudly or printed big enough. Maybe some things never change. So a book with messages but written in a complex and tender way which is far more effective.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ June 2017 All your carefully frost-protected summer plants can go out in the garden now, just remember to keep them moist but not over-watered for the first couple of weeks. Also worth remembering that while many store-bought composts contain fertilizer which will get young plants off to a good start, it’s worth investing in a liquid feed to keep them at their best over the summer. Pinch out the tips of fuchsias and pelargoniums to create bushier plants. It’s tempting to let flowers develop quickly after you have spent so long getting them to this point; but you’ll get a better show all summer long if you take back existing flowering shoots now. When putting plants into their final position you’ll find pelargoniums and petunias love to be in full sun, whilst begonias, tobacco plant (nicotiana) and most forms of bizzy lizzies can stand quite a bit of shade. Might be a good idea to give them a week or so standing in sunshine just to get them going though.
Top Tip!
Cut back oriental poppies and blue geraniums hard after they’ve flowered and you’ll encourage new leaves and possibly new flowers later in the season.

Receipts last month were a disappointing £267 including £39 at the Methodist Church Coffee Morning. From the smallest of beginnings in a warehouse in Newcastle more than 35 years ago, Traidcraft now works with over 100 producer groups in over 30 countries and sells for them upwards of £20 million worth of goods a year. This makes a substantial contribution to the lives not only of each worker but also to their families and communities. Through Traidcraft the Fair Trade Movement began in the 1990’s, and now has total sales in the UK of over £1 billion a year. Looking to the future, I would like to be able to raise the profile of Traidcraft particularly in our local schools and businesses. However the greatest need is for those who buy the occasional product regularly to try some of the others available, for those who express their support, to buy more products, and for those who take a passing interest to take the plunge and buy something. Don’t forget – if you are replacing items or buying presents, THINK TRAIDCRAFT. I have been your Traidcraft Rep in Bakewell for the last 12 years and will be stepping down later this year. I very much hope that, by the beginning of September, somebody else, or somebodies, will have taken over.
