Fabric Properties Comparison

Fabric One Fabric Two Fabric Three

Bamboo,Cotton Spandex Mix

Bamboo is a lot more sustainable than cotton as it requires a lot less water during production (CroftMill,2025)

Bamboo is absorbent and breathable

The Cotton and Bamboo are Biodegradable but the Spandex is not as its a synthetic fibre

“Bamboo fabrics are wonderfully soft” (Bambigo,2021)

The Spandex allows the fabric to be more stretchy (Fabric link,2025)

100% Polyester

“polyester is wrinkle-resistant and will better hold its shape, drape, and rigidity”(Masterclass,2025)

It’s moisture-resistant however this makes it less breathable (Masterclass,2025)

“polyester doesn’t have a very luxurious feel”(Masterclass,2025)

“It’s durable. Polyester fibers are incredibly strong, meaning they don’t tear, stretch, or pill easily like cotton” (Masterclass,2025)

Synthetic fibres add to pollution in the ocean due to microplastics(Good On You,2024)

Organic Cotton is more sustainable as it uses no pesticides (Good On You,2022)

Comfortable, soft and stretchy so good for jersey dresses

Polyester is not biodegradable” (Good On You2024)

Polyester may not be suitable for the end use of dresses due to its cheaper feel which is not suitable for a Boden customer.

100% Cotton

Cotton is very water absorbent meaning it drys fast It highly moisture wicking

Cotton has good drape on the body (SewPort 2025)

Water footprint –“the greatest impacts occur through wet processing of growing fibres like cotton” (The Fashion Index,2023)

It biodegrades and more thoroughly than synthetic fibres (Cotton Works, 2025). Soft on the skin (Paul James Knitwear, 2025).

“It will shrink when washed unless it is exposed to a pre-treatment and is prone to wrinkling. ”

(SewPort 2025)

“Exceptional breathability and lightness” (SewPort 2025) (SewPort 2025)

(SewPort 2025)

Cotton is breathable comfortable and biodegradable making it good for dresses Cotton is already used at Boden

Colour Fastness Tests

Boden requires at least a 4 as a pass for tested fabrics

To improve Bodens Print Durability test would be carried out to ensure the prints stay high quality since 67% of the collections are prints.

Grade 5 is the best

Grade 1 is the worst

All three fabrics pilled more with more revolutions however they can fall off over time due to the intensity of the machine meaning it may not be an accurate representation of a garment being worn by a person overtime.

Physical Tests

PillingTestModifiedMartindaleMethod

AbrasionTestMartindaleMethod

ResistancetoSnaggingMaceMethod

Resistance to snagging is not in the Boden requirements but it is a useful test to check the durability of the fabric

This test is highly important for the longevity and rability of the garment

BurstingTestBSENISO13938

Boden requirement is fabrics not containing elastane requirement is 250 KPa

This is N/A to fibre three as it has Spandex which gives the fabric a high level of elasticity

Our chosen fabric Bamboo, Organic Cotton Spandex Mix

We c ace for sustainable range and can lead to future innovations.

Fabric One proved to be the best choice for our end use as it is partially (66%) made of bamboo. Bamboo is much more sustainable compared to cotton and trees as the process does not use irrigation; the use of pesticides also isn't needed, which means it has a lower carbon footprint on the environment. Bamboo also releases 35% more oxygen which helps the environment. (Bamboo Clothing, 2025).

Man-made cellulosic fibres hold great potential for a bio-based economy when sustainably sourced, helping to prevent deforestation, habitat loss, land conversion, chemical misuse and risks to forest communities.(GFA,2023)

The farming of Organic Cotton does not use highly toxic substances which means it has a more positive impact on the environment. Organic cotton uses natural methods to grow, it helps to build healthy soil which stores carbon and helps to decrease the effects of climate change. (Fabrics Galore, 2021).

Certifications

Boden could collaborate with Fair Trade to produce Organic

Cotton which is GOTS certified

“GOTS is the only one among the tested certifications to offer complete transparency and traceability from fibre production to finished textile.” (GOTS,2025)

Competitor M&S already use the GOTS certification (M&S,2025)

Alternatives

Lab-grown cotton is also emerging as an alternative, with companies such as Galy which substantially reduces environmental impacts (GFA,2024)

(Veja,2025)

French sneaker brand Veja created a cost graph to spotlight rising organic cotton prices and instil product transparency (WGSN,2024)
