Guns, Gays, Government & the Gospel What’s the connection?

T
here is a tremendous amount of discussion recently about Gun control. In the wake of the horrible Sandy Hook school tragedy, people are once again concerned about gun violence. The people who are against video game violence join in the fight at this point. No doubt, gun violence is a problem. It is too easy to kill with a gun. Are stricter laws the answer? Is taking away our guns or changing the second amendment the answer? Would this be a safer nation if law-abiding citizens were not allowed firearms? There has also been a lot of talk about the gay agenda since the inauguration of President Obama’s second term. He referred to the gay movement’s victories in the same breath as the achievement of women’s rights and the black civil rights movement. Is it government’s responsibility to secure “equal rights” for this group of Americans? Should DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) be a focal point for the current administration? Yes, there are many discussions taking place with regard to these issues. The conversations that previously took place at the water-coolers in our workplace have now moved to an online pres-
ence in the form of Facebook, Twitter and other social networks in exponential proportions. So, how should the follower of Christ enter this discussion? Certainly, we know that the authoritative scripture informs us that homosexuality is con-

The question, though is not so much does God tolerate it, but is it a governmental issue. Should the government be involved with the sexual preference of its citizens? Is it a constitutional issue? Firearms, on the other hand, are clearly addressed in the second amendment of our constitution. We have the right to “bear arms” Why was it necessary to put in. In fact, so important that it was placed second only to freedom of speech, religion, and other freedoms. The govern-
ment (which was of the people, by the people and for the people) had to allow citizens to protect themselves from other people AND from the Government itself. What does the Bible say about the second amendment? We are Americans of course, but are we not first citizens of Heaven? Does God will that we have assault weapons? Perhaps, in reading thus far, you have concluded that this writer is pro-gay rights and would rally for the removal of the second amendment. You would be VERY wrong! As a follower of Christ and thoroughly Bible-believing American, I stand for the truth of the Gospel. The government is not my savior or protector. I do not rely on it for my sustenance, nor trust in it for my life. I do, however, respect its authority in my life, as the Word of God call me to do in Romans 13. I very much believe in our right to bear arms because the founders of this nation who were predominantly Bible-believing citizens saw fit to insert that right into our constitution. INSPIRATION Steps
By Paula McBride I couldn’t find my mother. I looked in her room at her assisted living residence, then in the community room in case she was playing bingo or crossword puzzles. No sign of my white-haired treasure. Then I remembered. It was Wednesday, Bible study day. I walked to Cedar Cottage, entered quietly and saw her sitting attentively, Bible in her lap. I tip-toed in, motioned for her to scoot over, then snuggled next to her. We listened together as God’s Word was poured out on a faithful few. I can’t think of my mother without thinking of her love for the Word and her faithfulness in prayer. Because of my mom, steps were set in motion to secure a solid foundation for my life. I took the first step at age six when I realized I was a sinner and needed Jesus in my heart. Together, my mom and I knelt down at the foot of the bed, and she led me in the simple prayer that moved me into the kingdom of God as His child. Stepping into God’s kingdom meant stepping into His family, and my mom made sure I was part of a Bible-believing church with a service-oriented youth group. My pre-teen years were filled with thrilling visits by missionaries, Bible memory and quizzing, leadership training, outreach opportunities, and just-for-fun trips to places we wouldn’t know about till we got there. My teen years could have been a disaster. My family moved, leaving my wonderful youth group. I didn’t allow myself to fit in with the new church youth, and I withdrew emotionally and spiritually. My choice of friends reflected my rebellion. By the grace of God, I asked my parents if they would send me to Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada. Prairie is primarily a missionary training college, but in “my day” it had a boarding school for missionary kids and other high schoolers wanting a Christian education. My mom let me go. God got hold of my heart once again and surrounded me with missions and real-life missionaries. Of course, I wanted to be a missionary, too.

The steps toward my service for God didn’t exactly take the missionary route at that time. My call was to earn a degree in the States. I stepped from Christian college to university, and then to the classroom in both Christian and public schools. For over thirty years, my service for God was teaching children to read, write, and love God with all their hearts. The next step was retirement. Oh, that was nice! I substitute taught when I wanted to, travelled a bit, and took two mission trips to Mexico. That’s when my next step became a leap. Last September, the Lord let me know the desire for missionary service I carried since childhood was to become reality. While serving on a one-week trip to an orphanage founded by Foundation for His Ministry, I casually asked what the needs were for full-time staff. The answer slammed into my chest. The need was for a teacher for the disabled children. The Spirit so moved in my heart that I rushed from the room in tears. After prayer and counsel, I applied for the position, and was hired. God orchestrated the details of leaving my home and family in ways that are obviously His handiwork. As I snuggled with my mom in Bible study, I knew it would be the last time I would see her for six months. Much can happen to a ninety-five year old in that time, but my mom took steps to lead me to this place, and we both know peace that passes understanding. So, dear reader, by the time this article is in your hands, I will be working with God’s special children in Vicente Guerrero, Baja California. Please pray for me. It will be my pleasure to share with you in months to come what the Lord is continuing to do in my life. I’m so grateful for His hand on me. As Abraham’s servant said in Genesis 24:27 (I like it best in the King James Version), “I, being in the way, the Lord led me.” May you, too, be conscious of the Lord leading your steps and know excitement and encouragement for your journey.

THE PERFECT HARMONY OF LOVE By Dr. Ron Harden

o many, the month of February is commercialized into one famous 24-hour period known as Valentine’s Day. We are encouraged to celebrate the ones we love by showering them with flowers, gifts and chocolates. While this is a grand ritual and a nice reminder to acknowledge those that we care about, our celebration of love seems to fade as soon as February 15th, when we return to our routines that give way to life and its daily challenges. Instead, as Valentine’s Day approaches and passes, we should ask ourselves, “Why do we need to limit our celebration for the people we love to just one day?” In the history of Christianity, love is described as God’s benevolent attitude towards man as well as man’s attitude of reverent devotion towards God. It is expressed as an action and experienced as a feeling. It encompasses compassion, tolerance, endurance, support, faith, determination and more. It reaches beyond romance and embraces us in all walks of life as we encounter one another. So let’s make a meaningful attempt to incorporate love into our lives—starting with this month and a new tradition. February should be about inspiring others to take a
step back from all of life’s “chores” and beginning to express gratefulness, devotion to and compassion for others, expressing love and appreciation on a daily basis—to our spouse, our friends, our family and all loved ones. The path to becoming a better person begins with love—it inspires and motivates others, but it is an elixir for which the main ingredient is you. Find out what and who is important to you, what it is that you love to do, and what make you happy. Be kind to yourself. These are not easy tasks to learn, but with practice, we can truly become more loving individuals. The reward comes when others begin to see and feel the love radiate from within each of us. Like magic, it spreads from person to person. As 1 Peter 3:8 states, “Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.” Take this journey of love as an awakening and continue to utilize it to grow throughout the year. Meth Addict Transformed through
Grace
My name is Grace, I am thirty years old. I was born in Redding CA, and raised by a single Mom. I am an only child. My mom did a very good job of showing me the love of the Lord and did her best to keep me safe. Due to lack of a father figure and just trying to fit in, I turned to drugs. I started smoking pot at age twelve; this started a sixteen year addiction. At the age of fourteen, I was in an abusive relationship. I had my daughter at age fifteen and dropped out of school. This relationship lasted for four years, when it ended I just started another one. A year after our relationship ended, my daughter’s father was run over by a train and killed. I was the one left to say goodbye. That didn’t stop me from using, I
Twin Rivers Crisis Center continued on in my addiction. I had my son when I was twenty three and was in another abusive relationship. When my family broke up after 6 yrs, I was lost. My identity was in my family. Instead of turning to God, I turned to drugs and started using meth intravenously. I lost everything in a very short period of time. I stopped caring about what mattered most to me, and the only thing that mattered to me was the drugs. I was trapped in my addiction for another 6 yrs. With many arrests, I continued to be abused and became homeless. I kept trying to stay clean but I couldn’t. I was missing the most important thing: Jesus. On October 5th of 2011, I decided to come to Teen Challenge and I brought my daughter with me. Since being in Teen Challenge, I have surrendered everything I am to God. I have allowed the Lord back into my life and I am learning to trust again. I know the Word of God and I stand on His truths. I no longer believe the lies of the enemy. God is restoring my relationship with my son, and my daughter and I have a new relationship. I have started GED classes and I plan on going to college. For the first time in sixteen years, I have over a year clean and sober. Teen Challenge has truly changed my life. Thank you for reading my story, and God Bless.

Some First, Some Last, All Equal
By Ronnie McBrayer Jesus once told a story about a landowner who hired laborers to harvest grapes from his vineyard. Some employees worked all day, others labored for part of the day, and some arrived to work only at the last hour. The landowner, inexplicably, pays those who were hired last (and worked the least), the same wage as those who were hired first and worked all day. No matter which way you cut it, this doesn’t seem very fair: Especially for those of us raised with the good old Protestant work ethic, with entrepreneurial capitalism passed along to us in our mother’s milk. So imagine the scene as it plays out. The tired workers form a line at the end of the day to receive their wages. When the Director of Human Resources arrives with their paychecks, regardless of the hours on the time card, everyone is paid the same! Quickly there is the threat of a labor riot or at least a lawsuit for unfair labor practices. The landowner is summoned an gives this response, “I haven’t been unfair! Should you be jealous because I am kind to others?” It is a direct and accurate reply, for the angry workers were not enraged over injustice. They were angry because the landowner was generous and gracious to others that had not “earned” their way. The landowner gave grace – making the
last first, opening the door to all – and this is what infuriated the other workers. With this story, Jesus has dug his fingers into a very sore spot for we who are religious people. We preach grace, but we don’t always practice it. We talk about God’s mercy, but we don’t always want the people who need it most to get in on it. We say we are in the redemption business, but we are not eager to open the doors to all would-be patrons. Landon Saunders says it like this: “Figuring out who is in and who is out is just too much work. It’s too heavy of a burden! Just try to treat every person you meet as if they will be sitting at the table with you in eternity.” That small change of perspective would do more to advance the kingdom of God on earth than a thousand aggrieved churches that pound their pulpits, point fingers, and exclude others from the love of God and the gates of heaven. brink of a culture fighting to keep our first two amendments to the constitution. There is a progression here that is interesting. To my knowledge, this is the first time in American history that the amendments one and two were being challenged in this way. Our nation prospered in its first 2 centuries like no other nation on earth. Fairly recently in our history, just a half century ago, we began removing the pillars that the nation was founded upon: The Bible and Prayer. These were removed from the shaping of young minds in school. Next, the killing of innocent children through abortion was allowed. This was followed by an ever increasing “tolerance” of sexual perversion and hypersexualization of our youth. Are we really surprised by the recent series of public massacres in our nation? It seems that reports of unspeakable acts of violence are now becoming a weekly headline. I fear that the repetition will soon dull us into not seeing this as news anymore. Since shortly after God created man, violence has been a problem. When one weapon is taken away another will be found. The Evil that lurks in the soul is Sin and that is only taken away by the forgiveness given by a loving Savior through His blood that paid that price for our Sin. The Gospel is the answer to man’s sinful behavior. Whether it is the urge to kill out of anger or mental/emotional instability or it is the urge to have relations with those of the same sex, or choosing to take the life of an unborn child, or abusing substances or steal-

That said, we, the family of God, the remaining representation of the Gospel of Jesus the Messiah on this earth need to focus on the real issue in all of this: That is, The Gospel. It is Sin (with the help of the devil- the enemy of our souls) that prompts mentally unbalanced people to use lethal weapons to murder the innocent. People have been murdered since Cain killed Abel (Gen 4) without the use of assault weapons. The root cause of murder is sickness of the soul. The disease is called sin and there is only one remedy: Salvation through the sacrifice of Christ. This allows the Holy Spirit of God to transform a once hell-bound, sin-filled individual into a child of God with a new heart. Likewise, the LGBT community that is striving for their identity in this world will find only an empty substitute. The gay agenda which as Dr. Michael Brown points out is not only seeking to become legitimate but has as its goal to place those that oppose them “back in the closet”. “Tolerance” demands not only equal rights but the quenching of any disagreement with their chosen lifestyle. That is where “hate speech” and “hate crimes” come into play. This, of course, smacks in the face of freedom of speech given in the first amendment. Interestingly, we are now at the

I’m admitting I have failed and need God to clean my mess. When I say ‘I am a Christian’, I’m not claiming to be perfect. My flaws are far too visible, but God believes I am worth it. When I say ‘I am a Christian’, I’m not holier than thou, I’m just a simple sinner who received God’s good grace, somehow!

RESOURCES “Bible” Mini-Series on History Channel in March By Emma Koonse Christian Post Reporter
Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have released the official trailer for their upcoming “Bible” series on Thursday. Furthermore, the epic 10-part mini-series has received an airdate; “The Bible” will debut on the History Channel on Sunday, March 3. With anticipation for the debut rising, Twitter users have sounded off about the trailer for “The Bible.” “It’s going to be spectacular,” wrote Marri. Debbie wrote, “I can’t wait till it goes on DVD so I can distribute a whole bunch for gifts.” The 10-hour series will bridge the Old
Testament with the New Testament, or as Burnett said, “from Genesis to Revelation” with several in-depth portrayals of Bible stories. Downey, best known for her role on “Touched by an Angel,” explained that she and her husband conceived the idea for the series on Scripture three years ago. “I’ve loved Jesus all my life,” Downey told The Christian Post. “It’s a passion project for Mark and myself.” Alternately, as the producer of major hit shows including “Survivor” and “The Voice,” Burnett has firsthand knowledge of how to create compelling television. “’The Bible’ is going to be seen by millions of people, and it looks like a $100 million feature film,” said the creator of “The Apprentice.” The Christian Post was able to preview segments of “The Bible” last month, and Burnett and Downey revealed a colorful, captivating take on some of the most important stories in the Christian religion. While sometimes violent, “The Bible” offers visually enchanting depictions of well-known and beloved Biblical characters. Noah’s Ark, the Exodus, Abraham, and the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are among the Bible stories covered in the highly anticipated television series.

Are You Now or Have You Ever Been . . . ? What the Louie Giglio Controversy Means for Christians
By: Gina Dalfonzo On January 8, the White House announced that the Rev. Louie Giglio, of Atlanta’s Passion City Church, had been asked to deliver the benediction at President Obama’s second inauguration. On January 9, the website Think Progressannounced that, in the mid1990s, Giglio had preached a sermon full of “rabidly anti-LGBT views.” They offered extensive excerpts from the sermon, which argued, based on passages from the Old and New Testaments, that “homosexuality...is sin according to the word of God,” and that “we must lovingly but firmly respond to the aggressive agenda of not all, but of many in the homosexual community.” Later that day, the New York Times picked up the story, running the following quote from Wayne Besen of Truth Wins Out: “It is imperative that Giglio clarify his remarks and explain whether he has evolved on gay rights, like so many other faith and political leaders.” On January 10, as “criticism over the selection swirled” (in the words of CNN), Giglio withdrew from the inaugural ceremony. If Louie Giglio’s fellow Christians aren’t taken aback by the ruthless efficiency with which he was disposed of, they should be. A mainstream evangelical
pastor, teaching views derived from careful study of Scripture and held by millions of Christians, both Protestant and Catholic, around the world—while emphasizing that Christians should treat their opponents with love—has been publicly treated as some sort of extremist freak. I can’t wait to see what happens the next time the pope and President Obama want to meet, can you? The fact is, the way that Giglio was pilloried by the press and hung out to dry by the administration—a presidential spokeswoman hastened to put plenty of distance between Giglio and the White House as soon as he withdrew—reflects a shift in our culture that has been going on for quite some time. As LGBT advocates have worked to make acceptance of samesex relations into a civil right, the fallout has been that traditional Christians, who see such relationships as contrary to God’s Word, have been increasingly portrayed as bigots. I’ve been on the receiving end of that word myself. So have many other Christians. We’ve learned through experience that there’s an increasing number of people in this country to whom you can’t even mention that you hold traditional Christian views about sexuality. For if you do, they will consider it their moral duty to shun you. The Puritans had nothing on the modern enlightened liberal.

RESOURCES I’m not complaining, mind you. I’m just saying that this is the way it is: Many of us have grown used to routinely hiding important truths about who we are and what we believe when we’re around strangers or even casual acquaintances. It’s all part of being a conservative Christian in the age of tolerance. Chuck Colson used to speak of a “spiral of silence,” a cultural process in which people are made “afraid to express a position contrary to the acceptable one out of fear of reprisal.” This is exactly the kind of thing he was talking about. There are those who defend Giglio by deploring the way that the media went digging into his past, without even considering if he had changed his views. And they have a point. The hysteria over a 20-year-old quote, as the Rev. Al Mohler pointed out, was worthy of Senator Joseph McCarthy. But they’re missing a bigger point: Giglio did not deserve to be treated this way even if his views hadn’t changed. Wayne Besen’s words strike a particularly ominous note, with his insistence that Giglio demonstrate whether he had “evolved.” The underlying message seems to be “Evolve, or else.” The ominousness grows to positively Orwellian proportions when one looks at some of the other wording being thrown around. For instance, there’s White House spokeswoman Addie Whisenant’s comment that Giglio’s sermon didn’t reflect “the strength and diversity of our country.” And then there’s Chad Griffin of the Human Rights Campaign, saying that “Participants in the Inaugural festivities should unite rather than divide.” “Unite,” in this context, apparently means “force to agree.” All views are equal, but some views are more equal than others. (Of course, nothing can beat the supreme irony of Thursday’s announcement that President Obama would take the oath of office on a “stack of historic Bibles.” Will the passages cited in Giglio’s sermon be clipped out of those Bibles?) I can’t imagine the pressure Giglio was under, and it’s hard to blame him for withdrawing. He was worried, he said, that his prayer—not to mention his other
ministry efforts—would be “dwarfed by those seeking to make their agenda the focal point of the inauguration.” That’s a valid concern. But I can’t help wishing he had refused to withdraw. Such a refusal would have reminded the nation that the president, as our elected leader, represents all Americans, not just his own party. And it would have demonstrated what it looks like for those of truly diverse views to work together for the good of the nation. Such sights are becoming all too rare. Where the culture goes, the law often follows. Will we one day reach a point where conservative Christians will face the question, “Are you now or have you ever been a member of a church that calls homosexual relations a sin?” It seems far-fetched now. But when a pastor is driven out of the public arena in a democratic country for holding mainstream religious views, it starts to look as if almost anything can happen. RESOURCES When Love Trumps Tolerance By Robert Mann
The word “tolerance” has been all but deified by our current culture, and the parameters of the definition remain somewhat of a mystery. Be that as it may, there are many occasions where intolerance represents the greater love for our fellow human being. The latter is dramatically brought to light in the gospels, where Jesus meets a rich young man who has, to all appearances, led an exemplary life. In the Gospel of Mark, the man is described as running up to and kneeling before Christ. There is an earnestness to his actions as he asks the question: “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17 NRS) After Jesus reminds the young man that God alone is good, He then goes through a list of God’s commandments. The kneeling man, certainly with some hope stirring in his chest, responds “Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.” (Mark 10:20 NRS) Under the authority of tolerance, here is where the story should end. Not only did the young man give the perfect answer, but even a less than perfect answer should have been respected by Christ. The inviolable principle is the autonomy of the young man’s moral beliefs. “Jesus, looking at him, loved him.” (Mark 10:21 NRS) Clearly Jesus is pursuing something deeper and more
meaningful than temporary good feelings and false affirmation. Love carries with it a desire for wholeness, truth, and realness that form the source of lasting joy. Looking into the very soul of this man, Christ spotted the one thing he needed, the one barrier holding back peace. To have surrendered to tolerance would have been an act of hate. Then came the truth like a surgeon’s knife: “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own....” (Mark 10:21 NRS) The wealthy young man was devastated. In spite of all his discipline, the path to salvation was much more difficult than he imagined. We do not know what became of this earnest man, but can be sure his life was forever changed. Love could not tolerate the chains binding his soul, and offered a key to freedom. The road less traveled - call it grace, folly, even the offense of the cross - awaited his footsteps. What Brand of Duct Tape Keeps You Quiet About Jesus? - Greg Stier
T
here are 3 brands of “duct tape” that keep Christians quiet about Jesus. These types of tape seek to seal our mouths shut about the good news of Jesus. Some brands are big and bold. Others are small and sticky. But they all result in the same thing…silence. As the President of Dare2Share Ministries I’ve been traveling the nation equipping teenagers to share the gospel for over twenty years. I’ve also had the privilege of equipping hundreds of thousands of adults to share their faith along

the way. And, as I’ve energized others to share the good news, I’ve heard many reasons why Christians don’t share the gospel. The vast majority could be categorized into one of three very different brands of invisible duct tape:
The “Um, I’m not sure” Duct Tape
If you put a microphone in the face of the average Christian leaving church and asked, “What is the gospel?” you’d probably get a variety of answers that range from “um” to dumb. The bottom line is that, for the most part, church leaders are not doing enough gospel training. We may be committing “the sin of assumption” by assuming that the teens in our youth groups and adults in our churches already know the gospel because, well, they are Christians. But just because you own a guitar doesn’t mean you can play it. First, you must learn the chords. Then you must practice. In the same way, just because we have put our faith in Jesus, doesn’t mean we automatically know how to share the gospel. We must master the chords and learn to play the beautiful music of the gospel ourselves. If you need a simple but effective gospel training curriculum for your teens or adults click here.
The Duct Tape of Fear
The gospel is a controversial message that can lead to rejection and ridicule. It points to the narrow path of Jesus who claimed to be the exclusive way to God (John 14:6.) If you share this message of Jesus you could be mocked, marginalized or ostracized. The same was true in Jesus’ day. The Apostle John tells us, “Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human praise more than praise from God” John 12:42,43.
RESOURCES Before we wag our finger at them let’s point it at ourselves first. This is the same reason many Christians today don’t “openly acknowledge their faith…” While we’re not worried about being put out of the synagogue we do worry about not being included on the invite list (to whatever) because of our unashamed witness for Jesus. But overcoming this fear is a small price to pay compared to what Jesus went through when he was mocked, mutilated and murdered in our place on the cross. If he wasn’t ashamed to die for us then we shouldn’t be ashamed to live (and speak) for him.
The Duct Tape of Apathy
Apathy is a big reason that many Christians don’t evangelize. We have other priorities doing other things and evangelism gets left in the dust. It’s hard to believe but some Christians just don’t care enough about the lost to evangelize. William Booth, Founder of The Salvation Army, once said that, if he could, he would make all of his leaders spend 24 hours hovering above the flames of hell to see what was at stake for those who died without Jesus. Mr. Booth knew that the key to producing officers who were concerned about “Soup, Soap and Salvation” was breaking their hearts with the urgency of the hell that others were headed to and going through apart from Jesus Christ. He wanted The Salvation Army officers to take care of the lost person’s physical needs (soup and soap) as well as their spiritual needs (salvation.) He knew
that, for this to happen, their hearts would have to be broken for the lost. Apathy had to be replaced with urgency when it came to evangelism. Whatever reasons you don’t share your faith it’s time to tear off the duct tape. How? Pray, count to three and rip it off. Moses, 11 years old
Moses was the child of a prostitute, and his mother attempted to abort him through medicine/drugs. She left him every night in her home alone for the first month of his life (so that she could work), until the neighbors found this out. The mother was taken to court but allowed to keep Moses. This nightly abandonment continued for one year, until one evening when the neighbors did not hear him crying (he would cry every night when she left). The police were called and they found Moses in a box with only two holes for air. He had gone without food for two days. He was taken to the hospital suffering Marasmus. They have never found the mother despite police efforts. Moses attends St. Jude’s School and is in Primary Prep. Moses is a wonderful leader of the younger children and he loves to sing and praise the Lord.

Do you willingly partner with Satan? That question may shock you and it should. The sad truth is many Christians form an alliance with Satan that leads to their destruction. Frequently, the whole family is impacted by that one person’s choice to continue with their lifestyle of sin. Hopefully I have your attention. You are probably saying that you would never consider a partnership with the Devil. I hope that is true. But here is the point. Any Christian who willingly chooses to disobey Jesus Christ aligns themselves with the devil. To help remove any doubt that my previous statement in not my opinion, please read the following verse: Titus 1:16 (NIV) “They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.” Why would I want to write such an intense article? I’m glad I asked. My answer: I hope and pray that several people would read this article (more importantly they would read God’s Word contained in this article) repent from a compromised Christian walk and choose to wholeheartedly follow AND OBEY Jesus Christ. Ask yourself this question. “Who benefits when we obey God?” You guessed it, we do! As Charles Stanley likes to say, “Obey God and leave all the consequences to Him.” To really determine who influences you…read the following passage of scripture. 1 John 3:8-10 (NIV) 8He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother. Remember, the above passage is addressing the intentional choice to continue in sin versus the occasional unintentional “oops didn’t mean that sin.” Always be mindful of this verse. James 4:7 (NIV) Submit yourselves, then, to God. (And I’ll add: in complete obedience) Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

THE SEEDS OF FAITH By Jon Skillman
Writing opinion pieces tends to make me a bit cranky. So, in order to maintain emotional, spiritual and marital stability, I need to, every now and then, write about things more positive and up lifting…things that turn that old frown upside down…things like seeds. Seeds? Yes seeds! Allow me to explain. The other day, while removing a burr from the fur of our dog, I became fascinated by the efficiency of the burr’s design. That little bugger was really in there. It was one of those little pill shaped burrs with all those tiny tines that anchor fast to fur and fabric. As I studied the burr it came to me just how wonderfully engineered it really was, and it got me thinking about some of the other marvelous seed delivery systems God uses to sow His fields. The lowly and much maligned dandelion, for example, has a delivery system that makes the Pentagon envious. With just a puff of wind the dandelion deploys a whole platoon of mini paratroopers up and over the fence to invade my neighbor’s lawn. Do you think the dandelion came up with that idea? Now I’m no botanist, so I can’t identify that plant that sprouts every spring where it is not wanted. And every spring when I grab it to pull it out, it fires seeds in every direction. It’s like they’re spring-loaded and just waiting for me to come along and…bam! As aggravating as this is, I can’t help but be amazed by the ingenuity of it.
Another weed that calls my yard home produces a seed with a corkscrew like appendage that, so I am told, screws its self into the ground. It does this through the physics of thermal dynamics. Hey, don’t ask me…I’m not a physicist either…and I’m guessing the plant isn’t either. Many berry plants depend on birds to distribute their seeds. You see the bird eats the berry then, because the seeds are indigestible, the bird, shall we say, deposits the seeds far from the mother plant…usually on my freshly washed car. Then there are the hitchhiker seeds. Tarweed, foxtails, stickers and burrs of all sorts that attach themselves to passing critters and socks, then ride off to greener pastures. The reason I find this all so uplifting is because I know the designer. This is also why I call them “The Seeds of Faith”. These things are only mind boggling to those who fail to see the hand of God at work around them. Many may concede to “intelligent design,” yet fail to carry it on to the obvious conclusion of an intelligent designer…The Creator of all things. .God Almighty. “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” Romans 1:20. I feel much better. I’ll try to be cranky again next month.

AS WE SEE IT My Sweet Valentine This issue could be considered our “unofficial” Valentine’s Day issue. You have hopefully seen several heart shaped “love notes” throughout this issue and may be wondering “where is yours, Seth?” Well, my son, James, who has taken over the design and layout of the The Ambassador (and doing a fantastic job, I might add) thought that he was the last one to submit a Valentine for his girlfriend, Deshea. However, my editorial is usually the last thing submitted and it also serves as my extended Valentine’s note for my beloved, Angie. As we celebrate our 22nd year of marriage this month, we both know that it would be a lie to say that it has all been wedded bliss. But the miracle of our enduring love is one of the greatest miracles I have experienced. We have come through difficult times in health, finances, family issues, and more. Yet, through it all, you were always an example to me of faithfulness to the Lord. You always believed that we would get through every adversity and trusted

I don’t know anyone who loves the unlovable more deeply and sacrifices herself more regularly than you.
