Naughty or Nice?
A Christmas Self-Assessment

Tis the season to be “nice”. Donations go up; Charities abound. There seem to be more people on the streets holding signs for help. It is certainly the most giving time of the year. Not only are we giving to loved ones, but our hearts are usually more open to give to those seemingly “unloved” in our world. Our anemic economy has caused a tighter grip on our wallets, but charity and help are still heightened during the holiday season. Perhaps we do this as a need to feel more “nice” than “naughty”. Maybe we are trying to make up for our greediness or selfishness during the rest of year. We all have our reasons to help. Usually, there is a pure motive. We want to see others “feel” better, so we do “our part”. It is doubtful that the majority of us help purely to be on Santa's “good list”. We genuinely want to relieve pain and suffering from others. Don't you? So then, would you consider yourself a good person? More “Nice” than “Naughty”? You would be in the vast majority if you considered yourself “good”. After all, watching the eleven o'clock news night after night should cause most of us to feel like a hero for simply not being a criminal. There is a lot “sickness” in our world. Yes, there is a lot of physical illness and suffering. But there is also a lot of mental illness that would cause people to do the horrible things that we see on those news broadcasts. Combine that with the media's insatiable desire to offer a buffet of horrible incidents with an often blind eye toward the “good” news stories of real heroes. So then, how DO we measure “Good” and “Bad”, “Naughty” and “Nice”? There is good news and bad news

The bad news is that our creator, God, has said that there is no one good (Rom 3:23) “But”, you may protest, “didn't He create me in His 'Good' image”. Yes, he did,but we didn't stay that way (and we can't blame Adam or Eve for that either!). Our original parents rebelled in the Garden by choosing to disobey God. However, before we blame them, we need to look at our own lives. It is true that we are tainted by their choice, “sin” as God calls it. Yet, we are not innocent of this behavior. We each go against His will and His way. Test yourself with the Ten Commandments. You and I will fail miserably. We may not have murdered anyone, but what about the other commands such as worshipping God alone or not coveting (desiring) something that's
not our own. (You can check the rest of them in Exodus chapter 20). “What, then”, you might ask “is the good news?” The Good News (or Gospel) is that even though we are NOT Good, God, our creator, Loves each of us enough to pour all of His Glory into human form to live with us (Emmanuel) and come to this planet as a baby boy. This is the true Christmas story (It's not about licking a icy pole or getting a BB gun). If you're confused about what a baby boy in another part of the world has to do with your sins, then you need to know about another holiday that is celebrated in the spring, called Easter. The baby boy (Jesus) grows up as God and man and lives a life without sin. He is seen as a threat by the Jewish leaders so they want him killed. Yet, this was all part of God's plan to lead Jesus to a cross to be sacrificed so that the Holy and Righteous God could free us to come back into relationship with Him. The baby boy was the modest, humble beginning of this servant who took upon himself all of our sin and to pay the price for it in order for each of us to be free to enjoy a loving relationship with our Father in Heaven. So, in a nutshell, you can't be “nice” enough to gain His approval. However,
you can receive His gift of forgiveness no matter how “naughty” you have been. Move over Santa. The real gift giver is Jesus!

Just Right rejected Him and broke their covenant with Him. A broken covenant requires a just response, so God, after countless warnings, allowed enemy nations to ravage their country and take them as exiles. He did what justice requires, but in His mercy, He spared a remnant who returned to their homeland. For many years, Israel was the knot in a violent tugof-war of nations seeking to occupy the land of God's people. Prophets who warned them of this doom died off, and God was silent for four hundred years. Into this scene of despair came something just right. The Apostle Paul writes in Galatians 4:4, "But when the right time came, the time God decided on, He sent his Son, born of a woman, born as a Jew, to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law so that He could adopt us as His very own sons"(TLB). This Son was born at just the right time in history to bring light to a people living in great darkness, and in just the right place to fulfill the many prophecies concerning His birth. He lived a sinless life and ushered in a new covenant sealed by His blood on the cross that puts us back into right relationship with our just God. The last scene becomes interactive. We can choose to jump into the act, accept the freedom Christ bought with His blood, claim our inheritance as God's children, and live daily in a covenant of love with the Christ of Christmas. All that and heaven, too! Sounds JUST RIGHT,

Christmas wrapping paper littered the floor as my brothers, sister, and I nestled on the couch to hear our mother read the newest of our Little Golden Books, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. "Ooh, this porridge is too hot," Mom read in her Goldilocks voice. "And this porridge is too cold," she squeaked. Then as she got to the next bowl in the story, Mom paused, and we chimed in, "This porridge is JUST RIGHT!" We joined her when the chair was just right and when the bed was just right, but by then we were rolling on the floor in giggles. The end of the story was lost as we shouted again and again, "JUST RIGHT!" That scene played out many years ago, and now I carry some cynicism that there is much of life that isn't just or right. Or is there? I know a Mighty God who is both Just and Right in His character, and His story has more drama than Goldilocks ever will. The first scene of God's drama centers on a nation chosen to represent His character to the world, the Jews. He made a covenant with them: You do things My way, and I'll expand My kingdom on earth through you. Follow your own way, and you'll learn a new meaning for the word disaster. Sounds harsh, doesn't it? But God allowed His children to choose. He wanted them to trust that His way was best and obey because of love, not duty. In spite of God's relentless expressions of love and deliverance, God's people

LIVING Willing To Wait By Ronnie McBrayer There are more than one hundred Psalms in the Old Testament. These old Hebrew poems and songs have been used in worship and personal devotional time for millennia. Many of these are Psalms of lament. These are poems where the writer protests his circumstances and begs for divine intervention; or for an injustice to be corrected; or for the God-given strength to persevere through trouble. The laments almost always hover around the subject of patience, of waiting on God. That’s something I neither enjoy nor am I any good at it. But I must face the fact that waiting is the truest evidence of faith. If I am not willing to wait for God’s power and intervention to materialize, I must question how much faith I truly have. Maybe this is the real testing of faith – at those times when God forces us into the uncomfortable position of remaining still. We who are Christians generally don’t sit around and wonder, “Is there a God out there somewhere?” We have accepted that proposition. We flounder about in our prayer closet and wonder why God behaves the way he does. If God is out there – this all-powerful, all-loving God – and if I am his child – weak, needy and dependent – shouldn’t he be concerned about this mess I’m in? Doesn’t he know that my life is in ruins? Doesn’t he care that my heart is broken? Why doesn’t he rally to save me and come to my rescue? These are the questions raised in the dark night of the soul; questions God can take I have two or three friends to whom I can say almost anything. These friends
will hear my words, and will swallow the meat and spit out the bones. If I’m angry, lonely, frustrated, elated – it doesn’t matter – they listen. They understand. They allow me to give full expression to how I feel. They can take it, without these things endangering our friendship. God can take it too. When I heave up my fiercest anger and deepest resentments to God, I do so precisely because I trust him. I believe, with whatever faith I have left, that he can stomach my disappointment. I discover that God is generous enough to field my accusations and disgust without abandoning me. Critics have claimed that the Bible contains all kinds of factual errors. Is the Bible trustworthy when it speaks of historical matters? The Bible contains two kinds of information. Some of it can be checked; some of it cannot. For example, it is not possible to “check” scientifically the accuracy of Genesis 1:1—“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” While the affirmation is not in any way inconsistent with available scientific data, at the same time the statement is one of prehuman history and therefore does not lend itself to empirical investigation. On the other hand, the Scriptures contain hundreds of references that arise out of the background of human history. These may be tested for accuracy. If it is the case that the Bible is demonstrated to be precise in thousands of historical details, it is not unreasonable to conclude that its information in other matters is equally correct. In fact, one of the most amazing features of the Bible is its uncanny reliability in the smallest of details. Let us note a few examples of biblical precision. During His personal ministry, Jesus once passed through the region of Samaria. Near Sychar, the Lord stopped for a brief rest at Jacob’s well. He engaged a Samaritan woman in conversation, during which He suggested that He could provide the woman with water that could perpetually quench her thirst. Misunderstanding the nature of the Master’s instruction, the woman, alluding to Jacob’s well, declared: “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep” (John 4:11). The statement is quite correct, for even now, some twenty centuries later, Jacob’s well is approximately 80 feet deep—the equivalent of an eight-story building! Reflect upon another example. In Acts 10 there is the account of Peter’s visit in the city of Joppa. Luke declared that Peter was staying in the home of Simon, a tanner of animal hides. Then the historian

said, almost as an afterthought, “whose house is by the seaside” (Acts 10:6). Hugh J. Schonfield, author of the infamous book, The Passover Plot (and certainly no friend of Christianity), has commented on this passage as follows: “This is an interesting factual detail, because the tanners used sea water in the process of converting hides into leather. The skins were soaked in the sea and then treated with lime before the hair was scraped off.” Consider another interesting case of Bible precision. When Paul was en route to Rome for trial, the ship upon which he sailed became involved in a terrible storm. When it eventually became apparent that the vessel was in a very dangerous circumstance, the crew cast the ship’s anchors into the water. At the same time, they “loosed the rudder bands, hoisted up the foresail, and aimed the ship towards the beach” (Acts 27:40). There is an interesting and subtle point in the Greek text that is not apparent in the King James Version. The original language actually says that they “loosed the bands of the rudders” (plural). This is amazingly precise, for in ancient times, ships actually possessed two paddle-rudders, not a single rudder as with modern vessels. In 1969, a submerged ancient ship was discovered in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Cyprus. An examination of the ruins gave evidence of dual rudder-oars by which the boat was steered (see National Geographic, November 1974), thus demonstrating the remarkable accuracy of Luke’s record. The Bible can be tested—historically, geographically, scientifically, etc. And it always passes the test. As believers we seek to know God’s will for our lives. As I reflect on my life, I realize that I too often tried to see a bigger picture of my role than I should have or than God wanted me to be concerned with. Is it not the day to day walk of our lives as believers that God wants us to be mostly concerned? While God does have a plan for our lives, we are not all called to be great widely known individuals. Just as in the early church, some are to fill the role of those who sat in the homes and synagogues as the Apostles taught them the daily living truths of God’s Word. They were storekeepers, shepherds, and even slaves! (Cor. 12:13), but they were believers—followers of Jesus Christ. Regarding spiritual gifts, Paul said to the Corinthians “These are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He gives them to each one, just as He determines” (1 Cor. 12:11). As I thought about Scriptures dealing
with this, I was reminded of 1 Thes. 4:1112: “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so you will not be dependent on anybody.” Paul gave this same admonishment when he declared, “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation” (Phil. 4:12). If we substitute worrying with trusting Christ to not only show us His will but also lead us in it, then we can know the peace He promised (John 14:27:16:33). While all believers want to do all we can for our Master, we must learn the first steps which He declared were to love Him and keep His commandments (John 15:1012). Here in America, we grow indignant and irate about many things. Lately the rumblings have been about the mosque in New York City, homosexual marriage, illegal immigration, and the economy. Let me ask you a simple question: when is the last time your blood boiled over sex-trafficking? About young girls from a variety of countries (including ours) being sold into prostitution, with no way out, no hope, and daily abuse and beatings? Do we even think about it? Because we should. I challenge you to read Tom Davis' new book, "Priceless", and not come away changed. This is an issue that has been on my heart for some time, and I've been begging God for a way to make a difference. In Tom's book his character, Stuart Daniels, tells the story of Marina Smolchenko, a sex slave in Russia. Along the way he also tells the stories of many others, but his 'documentary' focuses on

Marina. Thinking he is assigned to Russia for a simple documentary, Stuart ends up caught up in a raid to save the lives of ten girls forced to live in a brothel. You'll be absolutely shocked and disgusted by who runs the show. With risk, danger, adventure and challenges, this is an ideal read for any adult, male or female. Ultimately, an attempt is made to rescue Marina and many of the girls who work with her. To say more would give away the story, so I'll stop here. Tom Davis isn't afraid to take on the serious but often neglected issues facing the world and the church today. In his last novel, "Scared", he examined life in AIDS infected countries and introduced us to a brave little girl named Adanna.

Do yourself a favor and watch it with your family and friends. RUST stars Corbin Bernsen, who also directed and wrote the screenplay. Corbin plays a priest named James who feels Jesus doesn’t talk to him anymore. He leaves his collar on the pew and travels back to his childhood Midwestern home. There, he discovers that his childhood friend, the town fool, Travis, has been incarcerated for burning down a farm and killing the family living there. Travis claims he burned down the farm, but his story doesn’t make sense. James believes him. Eventually, through the search for the truth, the truth of Jesus Christ becomes clear to even the most lost in the town. Corbin Bernsen has become a major television star with PSYCH and L.A. LAW. He brings his considerable talent to RUST. RUST is an extremely well written, acted and directed detective drama. The outcome is surprising. RUST works on an overt dialogue level as it discusses Christian faith, and it works on an allegorical incarnational level as it shows someone willing to give up their life to save even those that mock him. RUST is a highly recommended movie and well worth watching.

POLITICS/CULTURE Pakistani Christian Woman Sentenced To Death By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman
A Pakistani Christian woman is facing death following a conviction under the nation's Blasphemy Law, after she defended her faith against a group of Muslims who insulted her for her Christian beliefs. Asia Bibi, a 45-year-old farmworker and mother of three, was working in the fields of her small town of Itan Wali in the Punjab region of Pakistan in 2009 when her hand touched the water that the workers were to drink. The Muslim women working with her then refused to drink the water, saying that it had been contaminated by the touch of a Christian. Some reports indicate that the group had been pressuring Asia to abandon Christianity for some time. In the argument that followed, Asia reportedly defended her faith, although there are two versions of the exact nature of her statements. The Muslim women claim that she insulted Mohammed, claiming that he had died "with worms in his mouth." However, Asia's defenders say that she never made any insults, but rather defended her faith in Christ, affirming that he had died for the sins of mankind and risen from the dead, while Mohammed had not. After the women complained to a local imam, Quari Salim, the cleric filed charges against Asia for "blasphemy," and she was sent to prison to face trial. Fifteen months later, on November 7, she was sentenced to hang for her "crime," and to pay a fine equivalent to two-and-a half years' salary for an unskilled worker. A group of townspeople in Itan Wali told CNN that they all support the death sentence against Asia, and Quari told the
news agency that her death sentence was "one of the happiest moments of his life," according to the interviewer. "Tears of joy poured from my eyes," said the imam during the videotaped interview. However, not all Pakistani Muslims agree with that assessment. Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer told Asia News in an interview that he regards Asia Bibi's death sentence as "a disgraceful episode. It is an embarrassment for Pakistan," and he assured the agency that the appeals process would reverse the sentence. Muslim scholar Asghar Ali Engineer agrees, saying that "We need to save Asia Bibi's life," and affirming that ""it is urgent to launch a campaign sustained by human rights leaders and governments ... We must not remain silent.” "In Pakistan, it is becoming increasingly evident, as in the case of Asia that blasphemy laws have become convenient instruments in the hands of anyone who chooses to target minorities," Profesor Asghar told AsiaNews. "The Blasphemy Law is un-Islamic and was introduced to legitimize dictator Gen Ziaul-Haq's regime, and it makes little effort to ascribe to the evidentiary or doctrinal standards of classical Islamic law.” In addition to local Pakistani Christians, international organizations and even the pope have become involved in the movement to free Asia Bibi. "The international community is following with great concern the difficult situation of Christians in Pakistan, often victims of violence or discrimination," said Pope Benedict in a recent statement

"I pray for those who are in similar situations that their human dignity and their fundamental rights be fully respected," he added, also mentioning his "spiritual closeness" to Asia. Although it is possible that Asia will be eventually exonerated and her sentence nullified by a higher court, that may do little to protect her from the death sentence she has already received. It has been reported that, in recent years, over 30 people who were accused of violating Pakistan's Blasphemy Law were either murdered in prison or killed following their acquittal and release. Thousands of individuals and organizations have petitioned the president of Pakistan, Asif Zardari, to ensure a proper appeal for Asia and issue a pardon if necessary. Contact information:

Riverside Restoration Center at 5828 R i v e r s i d e D r i v e i n We s t L i n d a (Olivehurst) will once again be hosting their annual Christmas dinner and gift giveaway on Saturday, December 18 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. for the residents of that community. It is estimated that more than 700 meals were served and over 600 children’s gifts were given away at last year’s event. This wouldn’t be possible without the help of many other ministries and churches. It is so encouraging to see
the Body of Christ come together for an event such as this. Because of the economy, even more participants are expected this year. Donations of new toys and food for the dinner are needed, along with volunteers to wrap, cook, and serve. Twas the Night We Discovered Christmas By Dave Kugelman Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the town Not a Christian was speaking they were afraid of a frown;
And then in a twinkling what I heard wasn’t a spoof, It was heavenly angels proclaiming the truth.
The atheists message was presented with zeal In hopes the 9th circuit would grant their appeal;
I marveled and looked and was turning around, My heart was in shock, it was Jesus I found.
God’s people were silent all snug in their beds While the ACLU spewed lies that poured in our heads;
He was dressed all in white from His head to his foot, I felt so ashamed as if covered with soot.
And Mamma cried in her ‘kerchief, as I hid under my cap, I was too weary to fight so I settled in for a nap, When deep in my dream there arose such a clatter, God gave me a vision to see what was the matter. I saw through a window something that flashed, I hoped and I prayed that my hopes were not dashed. Just as there’s excitement of new fallen snow, God said pay attention, I have something to show. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a beautiful angel with a message to hear. He appeared like lighting so lively and quick, I knew in a moment this wasn’t a trick. He said you’ve allowed the messengers of shame To mock and malign Christ’s wonderful name. Now Marilyn Manson, Newdow, and others, Ted Turner and Stern I wouldn’t want as my brothers. They have lied and they’ve cursed and caused many to fall, Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all! I felt such conviction, I wanted to cry. But I knew in my heart, not to quit but to try. While still in my dream, I had something to do, I wanted to scream, I wanted to sue.
He said do not worry on what you may lack, I am your Savior, I’ll cover your back. His eyes—how they twinkled! His voice was so merry! His love for me unending, like a wide open prarie. And out of His mouth there was wisdom to know, His countenance was perfect it was even aglow. He had some sort of message held tight in His teeth, It was the story of Christmas displayed like a wreath. To be next to Jesus I felt small like an elf, It brought such conviction to be aware of myself. He looked into my eyes and lifted my head, I experienced His grace and had nothing to dread. He spoke these words with no sign of a smirk, There’s a message to share, waste no time get to work. Christmas is coming, acknowledge my birth, I came as your Savior to restore your good worth. Proclaim me to others, let your voices be heard, Don’t let the profaners destroy my good Word. And when he was finished, he took off like a missile, I jumped to my feet as if stung with a thistle. But I heard Jesus exclaim as he left me that night, Merry Christmas to all, go and share this delight.

OPINIONS A NEW WORLD ORDER? By Jon Skillman There is an increasing worldwide push towards a “New World Order.” I don’t know exactly what that means, but I think it will come about by the establishment of a global government (no doubt spawned by the rousing success of the European Union and the United Nations). Now on the surface this appears to be a warm and fuzzy pathway to world peace and human harmony… a euphoric frolic through a new world garden with birds singing and butterflies fluttering on soft spring breezes. Boy, I can hardly wait. But just as I was about to skip out the front door to frolic in the new utopian flora, a blurb in the morning paper caused me to trip over reality and fall face first into the petunias. The small sidebar article told of how the European Union was placing Italy under investigation for allowing certain tax breaks to the Catholic Church. The EU Commission claims the tax breaks might run afoul of EU rules and has given Italy one month to respond to the charges. If the EU rules against Italy, it could order the country to demand the church reimburse the government for tax revenues not generated under Italian law. Huh? I have also read that Muslim nations are pushing for a United Nations resolution that would outlaw Christian evangelism. Wow! If the EU has that kind of power over little old Italy, and the UN can dictate religious doctrine, what might we expect from a great big global union? I’m not so sure this “New World Order” is such a good idea. I mean it would be the
EU and UN on steroids. Call me old fashion but I kind of like the concept of national sovereignty. I like the idea of holding on to the freedoms granted us by our constitution. You know… like the freedom of speech, the freedom to assemble and the freedom of religion. I have a nagging suspicion that a global commission (whatever and whoever that might be) might not hold as dearly to our constitutional rights as we do… they just might deem it necessary to ignore or usurp the authority of our constitution for, you know, “the common good” or to, “level the playing field.” Oh! Wait a minute… isn’t our own government doing that already? As unsettling as I find the political ramifications of a global government, it is the potential religious impact that I find most disturbing. And even though the bible predicts a coming global government, I’m not in any great rush for it to come to pass. Why? Because the bible also predicts that satan’s left hand man, the antichrist, will emerge as the one global ruler. I don’t think this will bode well for us Christians. By definition antichrist means… anti Christian! And also by definition, he will replace Christ. This guy will be the epitome of pure evil and his coming will mark the beginning of the end times. So what possible good can come from this new world order? Well the bible says it will hasten the return of Jesus to come and set things right, once and for all. I’m a little conflicted though… Should I say wait… Or shout bring it on?

Kingdom Shopping Month By Seth Halpern The Christmas shopping frenzy is already in full swing. Thanksgiving weekend brings with it Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the new Small Business Saturday, I believe that most people still have some shopping to do, if they still have money, that is. If so, I’d like to offer my suggestion for purposeful shopping. “Kingdom Shopping Month”. If it sounds a lot like “Shop CHRISTIAN Local”, It IS! Our money is a resource (and for many a very limited resource!) so let’s use it to build up the Kingdom of God! How can we do this, you ask? For the month of December, in which we often spend more money than the other eleven months of the year, let’s put our money to the most “purposeful” use. We know that ministries need our support year round and many are hurting this time of year. Homeless feedings and shelter takes money and effort. Gifts for the needy should be high on our list as well. But what about “our” money? You know, the money left over after helping others. The money that we spend on gifts for our loved ones. Why not buy something for them that will bless them AND circulate money throughout the Kingdom of God? For example, check out The Ambassador Christmas Gift Guide on page 9. Not only will you find

1 Corinthians 13 A Christmas Version
If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another decorator. If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another cook.
If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.
If
I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir's cantata but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.
Love
stops the cooking to hug the child. Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband. Love is kind, though harried and tired. Love doesn't envy another's home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.
Love doesn't yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way. Love doesn't give only to those who are able to give in return but rejoices in giving to those who can't.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust, but giving the gift of love will endure. Merry Christmas and lots of love to you and yours!
