INSPIRATION My Sister is a Nag and She Changed My Life Part 3 by Jan Duke
There is a lot to be learned from our Jewish “roots”, as we are the descendents of Abraham and enjoy the blessings available to us as “grafts” on the vine, if you take the time to understand what that means. The main question I was asked as I returned from Israel last summer was “what was my big take away?” That’s really tough to condense as so much impacted me. Here’s my response:
1. The experience was like a bowl of chocolate chip cookie dough. You mix all the ingredients, but you can’t separate them after they’re completely mixed, ready to bake. The land, people, politics, religion, food, economy, culture, military and business life become one large bowl of dough. You can’t separate the flour, salt, sugar, etc., (OK, maybe the chocolate chips) from the mix, any more than you can successfully extract any of the elements of Jewish life from the land, or state, of Israel. 2. Unlike America, the people live with less “stuff,” tiny cars or no car, but they are happy, love to sing, are friendly to us and express their appreciation of support from the U.S. 3. Military service is mandatory at 18 years of age for both men and women. The girls serve for 2 years and the males serve for 3 years, with reserve status until the age of 45. They carry machine guns everywhere and I was glad to see it and feel the protection.
There are no protests, marches, or malingerers. It is an honor to serve, and the camaraderie is evident. They serve with pride, knowing that rocket attacks and bombings can happen at anytime. I believe the young couples have many children, knowing the risk of losing them to war is a possibility. 4. The State of Israel is about the size of New Jersey. It is surrounded by predominantly Arab and Muslim countries, with the Mediterranean Sea on the west. These neighbors have a clear agenda to wipe them off the face of the earth and move on to the west…..us! America must continue to support them for multiple reasons: • Their military is our first line of defense. •
Read Gen. 12:3, which you should memorize. God’s blessing on us is based on our blessing of them. If we curse (hate, ignore, fail to stand united with) them, God will curse us—America as a country and us as individuals.

This is a critical election year. How we vote determines the course of our nation’s commitment to Israel. Examine the candidates and make sure you: 1. VOTE, no excuses, and 2. Campaign for and support financially a presidential candidate who unequivocally supports Israel.

Give Them Grace
By Elyse Fitzpatrick Book Review by Janna Gallagher As a mother of three, the most important truth to pass onto my children is to know how desperate we are for our Savior, how much we need Him. The next logical step is, how do I teach it? How did you come to understand that you have a desperate, longing need to be justified, to be loved, to be freed? Elyse Fitzpatrick moves the practice of “growing into grace” into the realm of parenting in her book Give them Grace. When we truly realize what Jesus has done on the Cross and how undeserving we are of that sacrifice, we come to understand how much we need Him and experience an overwhelming joy, desiring His will above our own. The more I learn of God’s grace toward me, the more I desire to obey. The more I experience what He has freely given me when I was deserving of death, the more I love Him. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:4-6 ESV) This book challenges us as parents to look beyond parenting “systems” for guidance and instead apply the truth of the Gospel to our child-raising. The catch is… His Grace must be flowing through
our hearts as parents if we are to be effective at teaching it to our children. One of the concepts I discovered in Fitzpatrick’s book was stated this way: Consistent, transparent, and specific confession of sin will help children see how their parents struggle with sin in the same ways they do. For instance, if one of my daughters takes a toy away from her sister, rather than demanding an apology, I am challenged to go deeper. I can explain that God commands us to love others and that Mommy falls short by harboring sin and being selfish. It is difficult for me to be kind to others sometimes too. Being outwardly apologetic may not address the underlying heart issue. God whispers to me that I am not kind. God loves me, but He wants me to confess my sin and depend on Him to be loving toward others. This creates an opportunity for my daughter to see that we both are alike: we both have sinful, rebellious hearts in need of Jesus, in need of His Grace. This book has many more gems to unpack and I hope that you will pick up a copy! Parenting is a challenging playground where growth in His grace can happen. How willing are we to allow Him to work through our imperfections so that His glory may be seen? May God allow us to sit and behold what He has done for us and may He fuel our hearts as we seek to minister to our children!

Keep Mum, Chum By Paula McBride
A chuckle escaped as I read the sign overhead. “Don’t be a blaboteur.” I grinned sideways as my daughter snapped a photo with her phone. Then we both laughed, thinking it was a message for her talkative self. However, as we toured the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor, we learned the deeper meaning of the phrase. During World War II, Americans knew the reality of spies, and one slip of the tongue could leak sensitive information regarding weaponry or tactics. That’s where we get the phrase, “A slip of the lip can sink a ship.” Signs, posters, and even a three-dimensional diorama encouraged both military and civilians nation-wide to “Keep mum, Chum!” Everyone working together toward that goal brought a positive outcome to the U.S. war effort. This World War II campaign against leaking secrets was effective in exposing that weapon of the tongue, but what about assaults of gossip, slander, demanding rights, disrespect, boasting, or complaining? It’s our nature to talk, some more than others. God created us for relationship and productive work. Both need words to foster understanding. But the wisest man who ever lived wrote, “There is a time…to be silent and a time to speak” (Ecclesiastes 3:7). Isn’t it interesting that silence comes first in Solomon’s poem? I wonder if Solomon learned the hard way about impulsive speaking. Surely he grew up with insults about the circumstances of his birth. Did his mother, or perhaps even his father, gently instruct him in the benefits of holding his tongue? Were the lessons of his life the substance of what he wrote for us in the book of Proverbs? Solomon’s book of pithy advice
compares the wise and the foolish person. He makes no apology for using the words fool and stupid because he is passionate about communicating that the wise man fears the Lord and shuns evil, but a fool is hotheaded and reckless (Proverbs 14:16 NIV). Most of us can control our words until pressure reveals our hotheadedness. We know what the Bible teaches about words, but how do we keep from “gushing folly” as Solomon so vividly describes in Proverbs 15:2? I hear (and practice!) a lot about tonguebiting, counting to ten, or taking a cooling-off period. Because this is a common topic of conversation, we know that control of the tongue is an on-going battle. James wrote it like it
“There is a time…to be silent and a time to speak” (Ecclesiastes 3:7) is: “No man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:5-10). So, is there any hope for us? Of course! We have access to the Holy Spirit who helps us in our weakness. We recognize the warfare for what it is. Satan destroys lives and relationships with the power of a mis-spoken word. We cleanse our hearts, many times a day if need be, and fill our minds with potent scriptures that give instruction about the use of words. Preventing casualties in the spiritual war we engage in every day as believers takes the same kind of caution American citizens practiced during World War II. Let’s keep mum, Chum! Don’t be a blaboteur!
INSPIRATION Trippin’ Down Memory Lane By Jon Skillman
Every now and then my mind takes me on an impromptu stroll down memory lane. You know, like those haunting visits to the good ole days. Recently while tripping down such a primrose path, it struck me how much useless information I have crammed into my little noggin. I’ve heard it said that we humans only utilize about ten percent of our mental capability. Although this figure seems a little high in reference to my logic and deciphering capacity, it seems rather low regarding memory storage. I mean I remember the lyrics and melody to hundreds of the old ‘50’s songs, which come to think of it, didn’t have much in the way of lyrics or melody. But the point is, I do remember a lot of things of questionable value. I mean who cares if I can recite the words to BeBop-A-Loo-La or know that Roy Roger’s dog’s name was Bullet? The important thing is, I do remember a lot of the people I’ve met, all the places I’ve been and the experiences I have lived…including a lot of pertinent and incidental details. To help explain what I’m trying to say here, what happens when I mention the name, John Wayne? Can you picture him in your mind’s eye and hear his voice in your inner ear? I’ll bet you can also recall some of his movies, his role and much of the plot. Think about all the people, places and things that are stored up in your memory…and all the related
details too. Granted, the ability to retrieve some of these memories may be somewhat limited, but with the right trigger…bang! There they are. Unfortunately not all my memories are pleasant. The Kennedy assassination, September 11, 2001 and some personal tragedies I’d rather not recall, but ironically I don’t want to forget them either. And there are, of course, some things I would love to totally forget. You know those little transgressions that displease God. Oh, I know He has forgiven me, but try as I may, I just can’t erase them from my memory. But God has erased them from His. In Isaiah 43:25 He says: “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remember your sins no more.” Wow, that is way cool. And, Psalms 103:12 says: “as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! But hey, why can’t I blot them out too? How come God gets to forget all about them and I have to live with them? Well for one thing, it is one of many things that remind me that, He is God… and I’m not! I also think it goes along with that old saying, “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.” I don’t know about you, but I’d rather not repeat anything that displeases God. Not because of the worldly consequences, but because I know it disappoints my Father.

Chick-fil-A: Latest Example of How Same-Sex Marriage Threatens Religious Freedom by Thomas Messner, Visiting Fellow at the DeVos Center of Heritage
Same-sex marriage combined with non-discrimination policies will result in significant discrimination against individuals and institutions that hold to the belief that marriage is—and should be defined in law as—the union of one man and one woman. In the latest illustration of how this will happen, a Chicago alderman recently explained that he plans to block the chicken restaurant Chick-fil-A from building a new restaurant in his ward because he is offended by the belief of the company’s owners that marriage is between one man and one woman. “There are consequences for one’s actions, statements and beliefs,” the official stated. “Because of this man’s ignorance, I will deny Chick-fil-A a permit to open a restaurant in my ward.” (Editor’s note: Since this story, Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel proclaimed that he would not allow Chick-fil-A in Chicago because “Chik-fil-a’s values are not Chicago values” One may wonder what a city with a proven history of political corruption might value). Under pressure, this official might attempt to alter his rationale for targeting Chick-fil-A or even back down altogether like the mayor of Boston did when he was criticized for targeting Chick-fil-A in his city.(Editor’s note: San Francisco and Washington, DC have since proclaimed similar threats against the restaurant). However it turns out, though, the Chick-fil-A situation certainly adds to the growing list of cases illustrating how individuals and institutions that continue to support marriage as one man and one woman will likely face a variety of significant burdens: A Christian photographer in New Mexico who refused to photograph a same-sex commitment ceremony was hauled before a human rights tribunal and forced to pay nearly $6,700 in attorneys’ fees to the complainant; Christian charities have been forced to stop providing foster care and adoption services because they cannot in good conscience comply with laws that would

require them to violate beliefs about marriage and family; Boy Scouts of America has lost equal access to public facilities and programs because of its position on open homosexuality; A graduate student claims that she was expelled from a public university counseling program after she conscientiously objected to counseling a potential client seeking assistance regarding a homosexual relationship; and A Christian organization at a public university was denied official recognition because it required officers and voting members to adhere to traditional Christian teachings, including a prohibition on extramarital sex. This is not “live and let live.” This is the state - and sometimes private citizens and the culture at large - punishing people who refuse to recant their belief that marriage is the union of a husband and wife. This kind of thing happens because proponents of same-sex marriage declare support for marriage as one man and one woman to be a form of irrational prejudice and bigotry similar to racism. In this view, support for marriage as one man and one woman is the kind of belief that should be purged from public life through legal, cultural, and economic pressure. This is precisely what is happening right now to Chick-fil-A. Defending marriage takes courage.
It wasn’t a good day to be a chicken, but it was a great day to be an American. By the millions, people swarmed their local Chick-fil-As, shattering records--and perceptions-about where the country stands. The media can dismiss us, the culture can degrade us, but there is no denying the powerhouse of deeply faithful people in this nation. By noon, even reporters couldn’t ignore the outpouring of support told in the lasting images of cars snaked around for miles, customers spilling out across city blocks, and snarled traffic. It was the slowest fast food anyone had ever had--and customers were never happier to wait. There were reports of restaurants running out of food, 1,884 Google results for “long lines at Chick-fil-A,” and special deliveries to congressional offices. There also were poignant stories, of people in San Diego ushering military members to the front of the 200-person line and bursting into applause; of customers circling up to pray; of CEO Dan Cathy calling Rick Warren, stunned that the company had set a world record for sales. But above all, there was hope. In every corner of America, people seemed to say, “You are not alone!” Across parking lots and food courts, customers were high-fiving, striking up conversations, and snapping photos with people they had never met. On this day, there were no strangers--only allies. And in one simple gesture, ordering a meal, they showed the world a strength that no poll ever could. It was the resounding
confirmation of a values movement that is not only surviving the pressure-but thriving under it. Even Gov. Mike Huckabee, who designated Wednesday as Chickfil-A Appreciation Day, was almost speechless. It went “beyond anything I could have imagined,” he said. “You know, for all the talk, ‘we need to be tolerant and have diversity,’ I’m all for that,” Gov. Huckabee told reporters. “But let’s include Christians in that; let’s include people who believe in old-fashioned biblical values. Those folks are Americans too. And if Dan Cathy wants to say something, fine. Other people say something quite the opposite. I don’t go around trying to put them out of business over it.” November 6 is a different story. That’s when Americans have a chance to put leaders who don’t respect their values out of business. But it will take lines like yesterday’s to do it. Of course, if conservatives can cast ballots like they consume chicken, America will be in great shape!

RESOURCES Don’t Burden Your Children and avoid polarizing behaviors in front of our children. Don’t: 1. Fight in front of them—Parents may have a brief squabble, but it’s important that you keep any screaming and yelling away from your children. Hateful put-downs and name-calling are a form of domestic violence, and must be avoided. 2. Force them to choose sides—Never make your children choose between mom and dad. They have a need and the right to enjoy a loving relationship with both parents. 3. Tell them all the nasty details about your battles—If you are divorcing or separating, don’t burden your children with all the nasty details of your divorce case. Keep that in your lawyer’s office and in the courtroom.\ 4. Make them serve as a messenger from one parent to the other—Your children aren’t puppets or spies. They should not be used to relay messages back and forth, or to report on the other parent’s behavior. 5. Intrude on their privacy when speaking to the other parent. Children are a gift from God as it says in Psalm 127:3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. NIV. The Lord expects us to steward these little ones and put their hands in His. Many parents choose a child, in preference to their spouse, and share their emotional burdens with this child. Since the parent is overburdened, single parent families can be especially troubled by this tendency. When an adult doesn’t have another adult he or she trusts with his or her problems, it might be tempting to share with a close member of the family, especially a loved child. This isn’t wise. When our children are young there needs to be a firm boundary between the generations. Adults need other adults with which they share their emotional burdens. Children and teens are not emotionally and experientially able to deal with adult problems, financial or relational. Children maybe flattered by the attention and will feel important, but they are unable to handle grown-up problems. The teen or child will sense this inability and feel incompetent. She/he will feel special, yet inferior, a difficult mix of feelings. In their adult years people like this, who have been favored children, will tend to have relationship difficulties. No one can compare to the parent who showered attention and favor on her or him. We need to keep a healthy boundary,

Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time; don’t lump the hard things all together. Take one day at a time. Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do, and let go of the anxiety. If you can’t do anything about a situation, forget it. Live within your budget; don’t use credit cards for ordinary purchases. Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc. K.M.S. (Keep Mouth Shut) his single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble. Do something for the Kid in You every day. Carry a spiritually enlightening book with you to read while waiting in line. Eat right.

Talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small problems in the bud. Don’t wait until it’s time to go to bed to try and pray. • Make friends with Godly people. Keep a folder of favorite scriptures on hand. • Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good ‘Thank you GOD.’ • Laugh. • Laugh some more! • Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all. • Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can). • Be kind to unkind people (they probably need it the most). • Sit on your ego. • Talk less; listen more. • Slow down. • Remind yourself that you are not the general manager of the universe. • Every night before bed, think of one thing you’re grateful for that you’ve never been grateful for before. COMMUNITY 40 Days For Life “On September 26, the highly successful 40 Days for Life campaign returns to America with 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion, as well as community outreach and peaceful witness,” said Bob Gilbert, who is coordinating a northern California campaign from September 26 through November 4, 2012. “We know 40 Days for Life has made a difference in America,” said Bob. We are asking all Christian people to respond to the Biblical plea of II Chronicles 7:14 to humble ourselves, fast and pray to end legalized abortion in these God blessed United States. 40 Days for Life is a peaceful, highly-focused, non-denominational, pro-life initiative that focuses on 40 days of prayer and fasting, peaceful vigil at abortion facilities, and grassroots educational outreach. The 40-day time frame is drawn from examples throughout Biblical history. All prayer vigil participants are
asked to sign a statement of peace, pledging to conduct themselves in a Christ-like manner at all times. “40 Days for Life has generated proven life-saving results since its beginning in 2004 in Bryan/College Station, Texas,” said Shawn Carney, national director of 40 Days for Life. “During ten previous coordinated campaigns, 440 communities have participated in this effort. Public Or Private Faith? by Dave Kugelman
The Christian Business Alliance exists for several reasons but for the sake of this article and the space allotted to me, I would like to focus on just one. For those who remember, Mike Wilson was a key member of the CBA for 12 years. He moved away a few years ago to attend a seminary in San Francisco to answer the call of God on his life to become a pastor. Approximately one year before the CBA was founded; Mike and I were simply business acquaintances. During this time we learned a great deal about each other. We talked about family, football, work related topics, mutual friends, hobbies etc. However, one topic of discussion never came up and that was our mutual faith in Jesus Christ. When we discovered that each of us were Christians, we felt ashamed that it took over a year for our faith in Jesus to surface.
That experience led us to use the ministry of CBA to boldly challenge followers of Jesus to represent Him proudly 24 hours a day, seven days a week, especially in the marketplace where we spend most of our waking moments. Our relationship with Jesus is not a personal thing. There is no such thing as a secret agent Christian. Our faith in Jesus is meant to be shared with others. The CBA meets every Tuesday at various locations to pray for each other and to pray for local businesses. There is only one thing missing at our weekly meetings and that is you! How God Works Through Your Operation Christmas Child Shoe Boxes! Many of us have fond memories of packing a Christmas shoe box gift for hurting children far away. Maybe this was a Christmas tradition from your childhood, or perhaps you helped your children pack shoe boxes. You might even have packed shoe box gifts every year for the past nineteen years. About 8 years ago, at the age of 47, I finally realized that I was not a very good steward of my own life. I remember talking to God on my way home from work one day. I had always talked to God throughout my life but, I had made no commitment to follow Him. Then I asked Him to lead my life for me. I committed to different friends, to weekly worship, to helping others and to productive uses of my time, including more inspirational reading material. My life did not change overnight because there was a lot of deprogramming and re-programming to do. There is no light switch to be turned on… it’s more like a dimmer switch that slowly gets turned… mine is still turning to this day. In my walk with Christ, He led

me to Seth Halpern a few years back. I won’t get into the details of how we met but I am glad we did. The Ambassador brings truth and inspiration to the greater Marysville/Yuba City area. If it helps bring one person to Christ and another to stay the course each month (as in my case) it is, in my book, one of God’s Miracles. Resisting Evil I had a conversation the other day concerning the current state of affairs in this country. I said my fear was that all our prayers, and work to turn our nation and state around, was too little too late. The Soviets are no longer our greatest danger, nor is China the Red Menace (we owe them too much money). The real problem is that we have let hedonism, greed, and selfishness threaten our way of life. The liberal social engineers keep creating regulations to promote immorality, limit population growth, and preserve all of the earth’s resources for themselves. Additionally they are mortgaging our children’s future by wasting our money today. By fostering ignorance, tolerance of anything and everything, inclusionism, and escapism into sports and entertainment (which was the panacea of Rome as she declined), we and our children are slipping more and more into

a useless society. Everywhere there are lures promoting self-centeredness. Thankfully we do have hope. Hope in Almighty God. That hope is three fold. One: that enough people will pray and He will turn our country around. Two: He will help us to bear it. And Three: He will take us out of here as our country goes down the tubes. Right now I’m praying hard and trying to tell everybody what we can do. My friend replied that she knew it was frustrating , yet God did not give us a spirit of fear but equipped us with all necessary armor. That it is for Christians everywhere to pray in faith regardless what we may think the answer may be. Our hope and heritage is in Him. To give up praying is like giving up your hope and abandoning your authority and responsibilities. It’s like saying “The kids are going to drink anyway so I’ll just buy the booze and they can do it at home.”
A few months ago, a reader, Don Pitter emailed me to ask me to connect him with the poet whose poetry we have run several times. He said that he had written music for the poem “Blown Kisses” (published in the June issue). I contacted the poet/writer, Elizabeth Hexberg of Wheatland, and gave her the information. In July, I received another email from Don. This time he was inviting me to join him, Elizabeth, and others to a ceremony in Wheatland, honoring Elizabeth as a parent. Elizabeth has suffered tremendous personal loss but uses her God given gift to bless and inspire others and be a single parent worthy of honor. Seth Halpern - Editor Elizabeth for persevering and Don for responding to an opportunity for blessing, and I’m thankful that God used The Ambassador as a tool (as Don told me) “to bring the art together”. Our mission from the start has been to bring together more than art but people. It thrills me to know that God used this publication to bring two of God’s children from different cities together for His divine purpose. I’m also thankful that Don took the time to correspond with me about it. I would ask that you do so as well, if you have been blessed by the ministry of The Ambassador.

Her weapons against the devil are God’s Word, and the authority in Jesus’ name by the power of the Holy Spirit given to us at salvation. We are being persecuted, we are in a war. We do not know the day but we know the outcome, and God is the ultimate victor. All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men (and women) to do nothing. What can we do? God gave us a representative government., and when the elected no longer represent us, then we need to vote them out. You need to vote if you believe: • That marriage is between one man and one woman. • That parents should make all decisions for their children’s health. • You should have the right to educate
and discipline your children. Your right to work is more important than a union’s ability to extract dues for political payouts. • That the money you earn belongs to you, and not the government. • That the taxes that you do pay should be enough for the government to do business. • That everyone’s reasonable tax should be 10 - 15% of earnings. • That government should operate on money it has, and not borrow on our children’s futures. • That we should welcome legal immigrants, but not be run over by illegals.\ • That punishment should fit the crime (including using the death penalty). You MUST vote if you believe: • You have the right to worship God and to speak of/for Him in public. •
