2018 Sonder Storybook

Page 1

EVERY ONE HAS A STORY. WHAT’S

YOURS?

STORIES ARE A VITAL PART OF OUR LIVES. SOME WE HEAR, SOME ARE PASSED ON TO US BUT WITHOUT DOUBT THE BEST AND MOST MEMORABLE ARE THOSE THAT WE CREATE AND LIVE FOR OURSELVES. SONDER WAS BORN TO INSPIRE YOU TOWARDS THESE LIFE DEFINING AND LIFE ENHANCING STORIES WRITTEN ON TWO WHEELS. BORN OUT OF ALPKIT. THAT MEANS ENABLING YOUR ADVENTURES WITH EXPERTLY DESIGNED, IRREFUTABLY CAPABLE EQUIPMENT IS IN OUR DNA. BEING A DYNAMIC AND PROUDLY INDEPENDENT BRAND GIVES US THE FREEDOM TO ONLY BRING YOU BIKES WE BELIEVE IN. THEY ARE THE BIKES WE LOVE AND THE BIKES YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE RIDING.

IN 2014 WE LAUNCHED WITH A RANGE OF THREE BIKES, EACH CONCEIVED WITH GUIDANCE FROM HUGELY EXPERIENCED BICYCLE DESIGNERS. IN 2018 THE SONDER FAMILY IS TEN BIKES STRONG. EACH ONE CREATED BY OUR DESIGNER NEIL SUTTON AND SPECIFICALLY BUILT TO WIDEN YOUR POSSIBILITIES AND GET YOU OUT MORE, FURTHER AND FASTER.

WHEN YOU CHOOSE A SONDER YOU’RE TAKING A CONSCIOUS PEDAL STROKE AWAY FROM THE MAINSTREAM, BUT WE RECKON YOU’RE PROBABLY OK WITH THAT. THAT’S OUR STORY, WHAT’S YOURS?

You know what they say, you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. Except we did choose this family, every one of them. Uncle Tom is a trail centre shredder, our Granny is a wilderness bikepacker and brother Dave is a bridleway basher. Bring on Sunday dinner time.

HIGH ALTITUDE GNOCCHI

“Stodge meets pain.”

“The previous evening, to a soundtrack of booming thunder, our little group had splintered on the increasingly steep ex-military road up to the Rifugio Gardetta – 2335m high in the Italian Alps. It’s just off a route known as the Pass of the High Valleys. Not that we were aware of any high valleys as we arrived with our surroundings hidden by mist, satisfied to have reached the promised haven, but all dirty, vacant eyed and soaked to the skin. We’d missed

the hot showers, but safely inside the hut we all came around with the help of beers and an enormous steaming pan of achingly simple gnocchi with a few other high altitude recreationists. Sleep came swiftly and soundly. Eight hours later we rolled out from the hut towards what had been obscured the previous evening...”

TARMAC LOVING FULL CARBON ROAD BIKE. COMFORTABLE, STABLE, CAPABLE CLIMBER AND BLISTERINGLY FAST DESCENDER. FOR THE ENDURANCE RIDER RATHER THAN DAY RACER.

THE PASSES

Legs on fire, the smell of burnt-out clutches and that corner on Hardknott.

The Lakeland passes offer some of the steepest and most challenging cycling in the UK. Their closeness means big days filled with brutal ascents. The difficulty comes in the steepness, none of that 6% alpine nonsense. These are proper 20% and even 30% walls of crumbling tarmac clinging to the mountainsides... Up for every major pass in a single loop? One ride, 112 miles, 13,000ft ascent. It’s the Fred. It’s on May 13th. Nough said.

The Sonder Colibri might just be the ideal bike for tackling the questionable pleasures of ‘the Fred’. Amira and Jack took a pair of Colibris to the Lakes for some Fred Whitton training earlier this year. See how they got on at alpkit.com/spotlight/riding-the-lakes

COLIBRI IS A SURE FOOTED AND PRECISE ROAD BIKE FOR COVERING LONG DISTANCES AT SPEED. DISC BRAKES AND BOLT THROUGH AXLES OFFER STIFFNESS AND SUPERIOR STOPPING POWER.

WHERE

Take it to the Alps for the grand tour cols, the UK’s toughest road climbs, the bike of choice for the TCR and epics. A ridiculously competent descender, get yourself to warp speed and back again, tackle the steepest climbs, ride all day, every day. Race across a continent.

BUILD

A full carbon, disc specific road bike. Relaxed angles mean comfort, control and confidence on descents. Clearance for 28mm tyres.

MAGNIFICENT REASONS TO FALL IN LOVE.

QUICK, LIGHTWEIGHT 29ER MOUNTAIN BIKE, A GENUINE MULTI-ACTIVITY HARDTAIL. FAST AND FUN WITHOUT ANY FUSS.

“No sleep ‘til Sunday”

“Tom’s plan for this year was unlike any before: ‘No sleep ‘til Sunday’. We planned to fire up our lights and just keep on rolling. ‘Just stay awake, eat food little and often…job’s a good’un’. A bold plan for sure. Do-able? Maybe. Tom’s sleep monster arrived at about 10pm...”

TAKE IT TO A TRAIL CENTRE AND GO FOR A NEW LAP RECORD, OR LOAD IT UP WITH BAGS AND RIDE RUGGED COUNTRY, BIKEPACKING TO THE BOTHY AND BEYOND.

WHERE

Take it on a big cross country day out or lap the trail centre. Responsive geometry balances with big wheels for a sharp feel and ‘roll over anything’ confidence. It’s the bike you can load up for Bothy trips to Cape Wrath, panniers or soft luggage, trailers or even kids’ seats.

BUILD:

A Hardtail 29er. Its beauty is in its simplicity, but don’t confuse simple with basic. Clean lines, internal routing and a 6061 aluminium frame.

Frame and rigid fork £299.

NX1 Rigid Hobo 29er/Rumpus 650b+ £879.

NX1 Recon Hobo 29er/Rumpus 650b+ £999.

PURE AND SIMPLE

We only use ‘pure’ groupsets. Unlike bicycle brands that look to cost save by mix and matching stated groupsets with cheaper pieces, a Sonder comes with a full set of exactly what it says it has.

As for ‘simple’, since our inception we’ve been believers in clean lines, performance and the weight saving of 1x drivetrains.

A CUSTOM TITANIUM HARDTAIL TO RIDE INTO THE WILDERNESS, THE PERFECT COMPANION FOR A LIFETIME OF ADVENTURE.

LAND OF THE LONG WHITE SINGLETRACK

“You’re never alone with a bike. It’s like a magnet: strangers gather round the Sonder like a titanium icebreaker.”

After 36 hours of flights and airports it started with a solid 800 metre climb through dense forest, rewarded by a stunning vista over Nelson as the trees gave way to a moonscape spotted with prickly shrubs. Once at the Coppermines Saddle, the hours of hard slog yielded to the most divinely interminable singletrack. I anticipated its end at every switchback only to discover yet more of the trail, losing altitude as it cuts through fire bush. Only as we approached Maitai Dam, the home stretch, did the heavens open.

The Vir Fortis sails over the highway.

“There were moments of varying peril, including steep descents on roads cloaked in ice, compacted snow and loose stones. The Sonder Vir Fortis sailed over it all, taking the terrain comfortably in its stride as I gripped the handlebars with whitening knuckles, contemplating the mess I would make if thrown off.”

"Alpkit

is renowned for producing extraordinary adventure equipment and has incorporated some really cool design features into its bike luggage."

At Alpkit we know that one size really doesn’t fit all. For the last eight years each and every Stingray has been handcrafted by our factory team to your exact specification. They love it, they really can’t get enough of it.

How do I order my custom Stingray we hear you ask?

From the link at the end of this article you can download the PDF instruction sheet or watch a video of Fran explaining how to create a custom template that will get the factory purring. It involves cutting out a cardboard triangle. Exciting!

Then you need to tackle the plethora of custom options made available thanks to our UK based production. We’re talking side

openings, divider compartments, document pockets, hydration ports, reflective piping, colour, width, stitching colour, lining colour, frame attachment, side wall padding, zip colour. The lot.

Once you’re happy, place your order and post your frame template to us. Remember we cannot start making it until we have your template.

Bike pack customisation doesn’t stop at the Stingray. With everything happening under one roof, we can custom make almost any bikepacking luggage if you think it’ll help you go nice places and do good things. Just get in touch.

HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL

“You have a choice: a steep climb up onto Derwent Edge, or an equally steep climb up to Hagg Farm. Well… there is an alternative. Drop into the Vale of Edale before climbing the mighty Mam Tor, or venture further afield, picking up the shared Pennine Way over Jacob’s Ladder and to Hayfield and Mount Famine. Like the Transmitter Carbon, Hope Valley rewards effort. The more you put in, the more you’ll reap, with breathtaking views and fast-flowing natural descents.”

Sonder bikes designer Neil’s backyard is the ideal playground for the Transmitter Carbon. It also happens to be right out the back of our Hathersage store. Find out more about joining us for a ride at alpkit.com/stores/hathersage

INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN BIKE MAGAZINE

Transmitter Carbon review:

“This is an impressively solid and well-balanced bike... Wherever you take it you will have so much fun it’s off the chart... a great bike that can do everything, from pump track and trail centre shredding to all mountain adventures.”

OUTDOORSMAGIC.COM

Transmitter Carbon review:

“It all adds up to a brilliant, all-round package that’ll bludgeon its way over the trails at close to full suspension speeds and this particular build has everything that most riders will need and more.”

SINGLETRACK MAGAZINE

Transmitter Carbon review:

“The simplest way to describe the Transmitter Carbon is that it’s a whole lot of fun. It’s incredibly capable on technical and flow trails whilst being light and balanced enough to forego the uplifts and ride to the top and onwards to the next hills.”

BIKERADAR.COM

Transmitter review:

“Blisteringly fast, sweetly detailed, radically dialled and still a total bargain.”

MBR.CO.UK

Transmitter review:

“Up or down, the Transmitter sets a blistering pace.

Handles like a dream. 9/10.”

LONG, LOW AND SLACK, PLANTED PLUS HARDTAIL THAT HOLDS THE LINE ON THE ROUGHEST OF TRAILS. UK TRAIL SHREDDER. A WAKE UP CALL FOR THE MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD.

AN ODE TO TRAIL CENTRES

Trail centres are a playground for us on two wheels, they combine fun features with the relative safety of closed, one-way trails and take away the mystery of route finding.

As a 'quick-fix' of outside fun they are perfect, that hour before or after work; traffic free skills honing or regular meet ups with riding mates.

Grizedale Forest Park is easily accessible from our store in Ambleside and can form the basis for a day’s riding with a steady roll out via roads or trails. Alternatively a short drive to the visitors centre opens up the whole forest for a day of exploration.

The Transmitter is the perfect trail partner for the mix of riding found here, from wide forest roads to ancient bridleways. There’s man made trails, steep climbs and steeper descents, and the Transmitter can do it all.

For advice on local routes, demo bikes and the Transmitter itself, plan a trip to our Ambleside store. alpkit.com/stores/ambleside

LONG. LOW. SLACK.

WE HEAR THESE WORDS A LOT AROUND MODERN BIKES, BUT WHAT DO THEY MEAN?

Mountain bikes have been getting longer, slacker and lower for a while but we think we’ve found a sweet spot with the Transmitter. A modern all-mountain hardtail that’s aggressive and responsive on the descents but well balanced and offering traction on the climbs.

LONGER

A longer wheelbase gives more stability at speed. The longer reach gives more room to move around when the saddle is dropped. Too long and tight technical turns become harder.

SHORT CHAINSTAYS

These help tighter cornering.

SLACK HEAD ANGLE

A slacker fork gives more confidence while descending. Too slack and the bike is wandery when climbing. Slack is good for going down, steep is good for the ascents.

LOWER BOTTOM BRACKET

A lower centre of gravity gives the feel that you’re on rails when cornering. Too low and you risk pedal strike.

SHORT STEM

This helps bring your torso forward and you can move around more with the saddle dropped.

WIDE HANDLEBARS

For more accurate steering, with responsive and rewarding line choice. Size the bars correctly to match your shoulder width.

A PLAYFUL, TOUGH, RESPONSIVE 650B, 140MM TRAIL BIKE. IN ITS ELEMENT ON EXTREME GROUND AND UNBURDENED ELSEWHERE.

EVOL IS IN THE AIR

“Climbs like a 29er, descends like a total badass...”

"When the trail tips in my favour all of my doubts are blown out in the first corner. It bangs over on its side like a GP bike. Should I put my knee down?" No! I'm not on a Fireblade running hot slicks, but it feels like it.

This thing is on rails! I like how stiff it rides, there’s no flex. It feels like you could pin point each nobble of the tyre wherever you want on the trail.”

Rob’s backyard trail also happens to be an ex national downhill course, capable of rattling your eyeballs from their sockets. Luckily his Evol loves that kind of punishment. Read more at alpkit.com/develop/designer-sonder-evol

HOLIDAY VS NEW BIKE?

Hannah ma kes the right choice and goes for a custom Cahoot, good lass!

‘So Hannah, what will it be, a holiday or a tandem?’ Easy answer for my bike mad seven year old. A trip to Alpkit HQ for a demo, e-mails to address the finer detail with the ever patient Neil and before we knew it the arrival of ‘Sophie’ the Sonder. We started with afternoon explorations, then moved onto day rides around our local Lakeland trails, catching riders on trail centre singletrack before embarking on our first multi-day bikepacking voyage – an off road coast-to-coast. A Scottish epic is in the pipeline...

Hannah and her Dad Paul were the first to order a custom Cahoot and experience its adventure potential and for that we thank them. For more about the custom process go to alpkit.com/deeds/holiday-vs-new-bike
