What am I doing here?

Maverick’s story

After graduating from high school, Maverick began working as a carpenter. As the months passed and most days seemed the same, he wondered if there was more to life than what he was experiencing.

“I began to really feel empty and purposeless just doing the same thing every day,” he said. “I began to feel like I just wasn’t engaged with life. I found myself wondering, ‘How did we all get here?’ and ‘What am I doing here?’”

Maverick had never been involved in a church or any religious activities, but he began exploring Christianity. His friend, Elliot, invited him to try Alpha.

“From the opening moments of Alpha, I felt totally safe to say what I was thinking,” he said. Maverick went through Alpha and explored who Jesus is and what it means to follow him.

“I realized I wanted Jesus Christ in my life,” Maverick said. “The problem was that I thought there was so much I needed to change before that could happen.”

Maverick’s Alpha host met with him and shared, “Why do you think you can clean yourself up when Jesus is the shower of mercy and love and forgiveness that you need and want?”

That night, while reading John 4, Maverick surrendered his life to Jesus. A few weeks later, he was baptized by Elliot.

At his baptism, Maverick said, “I gave my life to Jesus Christ. I’ve realized he’s the only one who cleans you up as you walk with him. I’m being baptized today to say, ‘I’m one with Christ, and I’m living my life for him!’”

Because of you, Maverick had a safe space to discover and develop a relationship with Jesus. He is now active in church and attends a weekly Bible study with other young men who are growing in faith. Thank you for the part you played in his story.

Looking ahead

In 2026, we aim to see 12,000 churches, organizations, and individuals host Alpha in the U.S., which is a 20% increase over 2025. Achieving such an ambitious goal requires guidance from the Holy Spirit, careful planning, and effective strategies. We have five main priorities this year as we seek to reach our goals in healthy and effective ways.

Promote the Alpha Youth Series

We aim to empower more students to participate in and host Alpha Youth for their friends. We saw a 74% year-over-year increase in the number of Alpha Youth participants in 2025 over 2024, and we want to sustain this momentum through insights and initiatives that will drive future growth of Alpha Youth for Generations Z and Alpha.

Prepare for the launch of the new Alpha Series

The Alpha Film Series is the core of Alpha’s offering to churches. The current series was produced 10 years ago, and we now have the opportunity to reimagine it to connect a curious generation with the Christian faith in an authentic, relevant, and accessible way. Production is underway, and we aim to launch the new series at the Leadership Conference in London in May of 2027.

Invest in citywide Alpha movements

The Strategic Cities team is working with Alpha’s hub churches, particularly in Chicago, Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City, to serve as showcases for thriving Alphas. These strategic cities are part of citywide evangelism movements to run collaborative Alphas in parishes and churches across multiple denominations, promoting unity in the Church. With 12 citywide Alphas in 2025, we set a goal of 22 in 2026 and 100 over the next seven years.

Strengthen our prayer culture

Everything we do depends on Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit in people’s lives. We want to increase support for Alpha leaders in creating environments of expectancy, prayer, and reliance on God, and we want to build our prayer network to 225 intercessors.

Innovate our fundraising

To fully live out the mission before us, we are inviting more partners to join us in strengthening and expanding Alpha’s impact. By increasing our budget and growing our community of financial supporters, we can equip our development team, open doors in new regions, and elevate our outreach efforts so that more people can encounter Jesus. Your partnership helps make this possible.

Divine interruption

After losing her stepfather to a violent robbery, Monique spiraled into depression, addiction, and self-harm. She would check herself into a psychiatric clinic so she wasn’t alone.

Monique would pray and write letters to God, but she felt like he was distant and unresponsive. She began using harder drugs, drinking daily, and continuing to self-harm.

An Uber driver invited Monique to church, and she visited one Sunday. She felt peace during the service, but she couldn’t afford the trip to church often. She prayed for God to use the church in her life.

Months later, still feeling unseen by God, Monique planned to take her life. She said, “I didn’t want to die; I just didn’t have any hope for tomorrow.”

The day before her planned suicide attempt, while working at a mall in Rio, she helped two men. They later returned to say God had told them not to leave without speaking to her. They connected her with the pastor from the church she had visited, who invited her to Alpha the very next day.

At Alpha, Monique experienced unconditional love and acceptance. For the first time, she realized God saw her, loved her, and had a purpose for her life. She chose to follow Jesus – a decision that transformed everything.

“No matter who you are, no matter what you have done, God loves you, and he’s there for you,” she said. Monique met her husband in a small group, and they have a daughter together.

On her neck, she bears a cross tattoo where she once intended to end her life. It’s formed with the date of her first Alpha and the date of her baptism. “It’s the place I was supposed to die, and it’s now the place that I started living.”

Your support of Alpha helps people, like Monique, encounter Jesus and discover the hope that lasts forever. Thank you.
