Back to the Basics
of Alpha Sigma Alpha By Kim R. Meyer, BB National President he National Council has chosen "Back to Basics" as our themefor the 1992-94 biennium. Our goal is to examine and evaluate all our current programs and publications. We will update them to meet the needs of today's modem women, collegians and alumnae. However, an integral part of this process is to also examine everything we are doing in light of the "basics" of our sorority, keeping in mind the ideas and ideals our founders had in 190 1. In the incorporation letter they wrote to the Honorable George J . Hundley, judge of the circuit court in Prince Edward County, our Founders stated:

'The purpose of the association shall be to cultivate friendship among its members, and in every way to create pure and elevating sentiments, to perform such deeds and to mould such opinions as wUl tend to elevate and ennoble womanhood in the world. "
Our purpose remains the same today: to "elevate and ennoble womanhood in the world. " Today, we might choose different words to express this concept, but Alpha Sigma Alpha continues to offer her members this challenge, along with a caring environment for each member to achieve her best - "arista!" What are the basics of Alpha Sigma Alpha? They are clearly

expressed in our ritual, our aims and our beautiful creed. The creed not only expresses philosophical ideas, but a practical guide to living a full life, as an individual and as part of a larger world community. The creed talks about balance and beauty and hope and peace. What more can we ask for? What more can we strive for? One of my favorite sorority quotes has been taped to the front of my computer for the past year. Louise Cox Carper said: 'The fimdamental object of a sorority is to cultivate those qualities which will help its members. to meet more successfully the events of life. A sorority is the training ground for the cultivation of the act of living in harmony with other people. "
Doesn't this sum up what we are doing, what we are sharing with others? It's no secret that some of the goals of young women today are vastly different than they were in 1901, or even 20 years ago when I graduated from college. During my travels the past year, I have met collegians whose goals include advanced degrees in law or medicine, service in the Peace Corps and even becoming the secretary of education. Can our sorority meet their needs, too? Yes! Unconditional love, given freely in an unsurpassed system of caring, sisterhood and support, is needed today more than ever. The sorority provides a loving family for each young woman, sustaining her through the pressures of academic achievement and working part time to pay some, or all, of her college expenses. And the greatest bonus sorority membership offers is the
continuation of this sisterhood throughout each member's lifetime. .. The sorority also provides, in a way no other college organization can, the development of leadership in each woman. There are numerous opportunities to chair a committee or be a chapter officer. We offer a training ground for leadership development and opportunities for success. And there's always a safety net of sisterhood when things don't go so well, someone to pick you up, dust you off and set you on your feet again. And as women within the greater Greek community, our members are empowered to take positive action on behalf of all women concerning their personal safety and health. Writing a Founders' Day message is challenging, especially when many others before me have said it so well. To close, I will borrow one more quotation, this time from Jean Raup Grady, BE, who served as national president from 1958 to 1961:

hat could be better than visiting Milwaukee, "A Great Place on a Great Lake?" Visiting Milwaukee and attending the 38th Alpha Sigma Alpha National Convention, "a great event at a great place on a great lake!" Convention Chairman Nancy Andrus Cerwin, fE, and other Milwaukee alumnae have been busy re-discovering their hometown, Milwaukee, and can hardly wait for June 22-26, 1994, to share their "gemutlichkeit" (warmth and hospitality) with you.
Learning Milwaukee-ese Milwaukee's name comes from the Algonquin Indian work "Milliocki" meaning "gathering place by the waters. " Located on Lake Michigan's western shore, Milwaukee is the 18th largest city in the country. Lake Michigan influences the city's climate and leads to the colloquialism "cooler near the lake." Late June temperatures average 68 degrees, although a popular way to predict the weather is to check the gas flame-shaped light atop the Wisconsin

Gas Co. building. Gold for cold, red for warm, blue no change and flashing for rain or snow! Other Milwaukee-ese includes referring to drinking fountains as "bubblers," and "down by" as in, 'Those Alpha Sigs will be staying down by the Marc Plaza. " The Marc Plaza, an elegant, stately high-lise hotel, which features an indoor pool and a parking pavilion, is located in the heart of downtown Milwaukee. The Empire Room, featured in the movie 'The Godfather," will be the site of the ALA Awards Banquet.
City of Festivals Milwaukee offers a sparkling valiety of cultural attractions, activities and events. Known as the City of Festivals, Milwaukee celebrates its "melting pot" tradition throughout the year, but especially during the summer. Some activities that will be scheduled near convention time include The Lakefront Festival of the Arts, one of the Midwest's most important professional art festivals. Also planned is Rainbow Summer, a selies of free performances of jazz, country western, bluegrass and classical music, as (continued on page 6)

Nancy Andrus Gerwin, rE, has been selected as the local chairman for the 1994 Alpha Sigma Alpha National Convention. Born and raised in the Milwaukee area, Nancy is no stranger to challenges. As a kindergarten teacher for 25 years with Greenfield Public Schools, Nancy knows the discipline needed to get 25 students dressed with mittens, boots and winter jackets. She brings the same sense of organization and good humor to her role as convention chairman. Nancy served as a national province director in the past and is an active member of the Milwaukee Alumnae Chapter. She credited the full-fledged support promised to her by the local alumnae as one of the reasons for accepting the position. NEWS TO NOTE The Phoenix undergoes redesign, adds feature The Phoenix took on a whole new look with the summer issue. Designer Jody Toth of Indianapolis worked with editor Nancy I. Z. Reese to develop the new design. The issue also marked the introduction of a new feature , "Alpha Spirit," a section of photos from collegiate and alumnae chapters. The Phoenix joined the era of computer desktop publishing with the issue as well. National Headquarters will be a key element in this change as any material not typed into a computer by the editors will be typed at headquarters.
Narcissus cookbooks offered for fundraising Alpha Sigma Alpha is offering collegiate and alumnae chapters an opportunity to raise funds by selling the "Narcissus" cookbook. Chapters can sell the books for $14.95 each and keep $4.95 for the chapter treasury. The cookbook is filled with recipes submitted by Alpha Sigma Alphas from across the country. Centennial theme and logo contest Artistic? Creative? Alpha Sigma Alpha invites you to get involved in the planning for the centennial convention and regional celebrations. AI.A will celebrate its 100th anniversary in eight years, and past national presidents, chaired by Rosemary Carucci Goss, BIT, have already begun work on formulating plans for the celebration. The theme and logo will be used on all sorority and foundation centennial materials. Contest winners will be featured in The Phoenix and will receive a special centennial memento and free registration to the convention.

Lawson Blackstone dies Wilmar Lawson Blackstone, husband of Mary Emerson Blackstone, past national president, died in North Carolina on July 7, 1993. Lawson was instrumental in establishing the Mary Emerson Blackstone Scholarship Fund, one of six name scholarships given by Alpha Sigma Alpha, upon Mary's death in 1988.
Epsilon Epsilon has top chapter efficiency Epsilon Epsilon Chapter, Emporia State University, KS, received the top chapter efficiency of 99.15 out of a possible 100 for 1992-93, according to National Secretary Leslie Maxwell Ziringer,
rH. Chapter efficiencies are compiled from national officers and reflect ontime and correctly completed reports. The average efficiency for all Alpha Sigma Alpha chapters was 57.75. Other chapters in the top 10 were Beta Sigma, Southwest Missouri State University, 99; Eta Eta, Pittsburg State University, KS, 98.54; Beta Gamma, Northeastern State University, OK, 97.85; Zeta Alpha, Missouri Southern State College, 94.54; Alpha Beta, Northeast Missouri State University,
92.85; Alpha, Longwood College, VA, 90.54; Phi Phi, Northwest Missouri State University, 89.85; Beta Nu , Murray State University, KY, 89.15; and Epsilon Lambda, University of Pittsburgh Johnstown, 84.77.
Hazing update: Coke dates eliminated The Alpha Sigma Alpha National Council voted this summer to eliminate the use of coke dates in all ALA pledge programs, effective immediately. Coke dates are often the most time consuming and abused component of pledging. Requirements to obtain personal interviews with or signatures of 60 to 120 women in a six-week or less period is ridiculous and contrary to sorority ideals. In addition, coke dates have given some individuals and chapters an excuse to haze. Chapters will need the support of all members and alumnae to eliminate this practice. Anyone with questions regarding this new policy should contact National Headquarters.

Bonnie goes out a winner BY BEnY U. WALLICK, ZZ Foundation Chairman
he goal during her term in office was to raise $100,000 in contributions for the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation. And that goal was surpassed before Bonnie Payne Koenemann, ZZ, completed her term on the foundation board of trustees in June 1993. Alpha Sigma Alpha is indebted to Bonnie for laying a firm, strong groundwork that others will follow as they plan for the future of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation. She had served as the chairman since the beginning of the foundation in the fall of 1986. From the time of her initiation into Zeta Zeta Chapter at Central Missouri State University in 1943, Bonnie has served Alpha Sigma Alpha in many capacities. She was national fellowship and philanthropic chairman from 196164, national editor, 1964-70, and national treasurer, 1970-72. She has been active in the St. Louis Alumnae Chapter for 45 years and has been the chapter's delegate to the St. Louis Panhellenic for the past six years. Bonnie continued participation in church and local activities after her retirement in 1985 from teaching

business education for 17 years. Because her loyalty and devotion to Alpha Sigma Alpha epitomize a lifetime commitment to the sorority, Bonnie was the second recipient of the Evelyn G. Bell Award. This was in 1984, before she began her position as chairman of the foundation board of trustees. At that time Bonnie said, "I think that all Alpha Sigs should keep a copy of our creed handy so that they can be reminded of these words to live by." Certainly Bonnie has filled her days with satisfying activity and joyously lived each day to its ultimate good. Her own generosity in giving financially and of her time is something to emulate.
Looking ahead . . . Now it is time to begin on the next $100,000. The Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation Board of Trustees met at National Headquarters in June to begin that process. Betty Urban Wallick, ZZ, was reelected to a three-year term and elected chairman for 1993-94. Rosemary Carucci Goss, BTI, was elected as a new trustee and elected

vice chairman for 1993-94. Marilyn Ramsey Garbee, BI, whose term ends in 1994, was reelected secretary. Deborah Field Dietrich, BN, whose term ends in 1995, was reelected treasurer. A contribution was made to the Leadership Development Institute, and plans were made for the implementation of a Foundation Scholarship.

After receiving her degree in marketing management and recreation and leisure studies, Chrissie Schmidt is ready to travel for the sorority. A member of Beta Sigma Chapter at Southwest Missouri State University, Chrissie has been rush chair, song leader, social chair and on the scholarship committee, among other chapter positions. She was a page at the 1992 A'LA National Convention and worked at National Headquarters. Chrissie has been inducted into Order of Omega, Phi Eta Sigma, Golden Key and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. She received a university scholarship and made the dean's list every semester. Chrissie was a student ambassador and a member of the equestrian club and the recreation and leisure studies association. ~*~

he Zeta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was installed on Feb. 6, 1993, at Missouri Southern State College in Joplin, MO. Many of the women in this group were part of a local sorority, Lambda Beta Phi, that had been a part of the campus for more than 20 years. The women were pledged late in September and were able to be initiated after just four months of hard work and determination. Diane Yencic James, HH, past national president, resides in Pittsburg, KS, about a half an hour away, and served as the colony's financial and membership advisor. The white luncheon was held in the Beefmaster's Restaurant. Lori Scott served as the toastmistress. She provided the guests with a history of the chapter from its beginnings as a local sorority. After lunch, Angela Moss, colony president, and Allison Whitehead, chapter president, opened gifts from the national organization and guests. The reception was held that afternoon in the student center on campus. Refreshments were served to college officials, representatives of the other Greek organizations, parents, family and friends . The installation banquet was held Saturday evening at the Lorna Linda Resort and Estates. Kendy Clark served as toastmistress. Members of the college administration were in attendance to show their support of the new chapter. Nancy Loome, director of career planning and placement was the guest speaker for
the evening. The "aspire" toast was given by Stephanie Nelson, past president of Eta Eta chapter; the "seek" toast by Brenda Rua Chappell, HH, advisor for Eta Eta chapter; and the "attain" toast by Barbara Williamson, province director. The charter was presented to Allison Whitehead and Angela Moss by National President Kim Meyer. ALUMNAE STARS Writer earns karate gold Linda Davis Kyle, ~B . an internationally published writer, recently captured two gold medals in the 1993 USA Karate Federation National
directors of Texas Society to Prevent Blindness and has given 400 hours of service at Texas Recording for the Blind. Linda earned a bachelors degree in biology and a masters degree in English at Tennessee Technological University. She now resides in Texas with her husband Dr. Richard Kyle and her two sons, Brock, 13, and Brett, 10.

Championships in Phoenix, AZ. This has earned her an All American Athlete Award for 1993 and the title of National Karate Champion in her division. She studies Hayashi-Ha Shito-Ryu style karate. Linda has had articles published in Martial Arts Training and Karate Profiles Made in America. Her articles on literary subjects have appeared in international academic journals, and her articles on health, fitness and sports have been published in various popular publications. She writes several columns, including a weekly column for The Dispatch, a Tennessee newspaper, and a monthly column for Austin Health & Fitness. Many of Linda's writings are about eye health and eye safety. Since 1989, she has served on the board of

A Drake University alumna who describes herself as "96 years young," Edith Burr
Des Moines Public Schools before retiring. Buelt writes , 'The most extraordinary thing about Edie is that she considers herself as an ordinary person. Yet, Edith Burr Lieurance chose and maintained a career during a time when most women were relegated to the home." Edie did not marry until the age of 53, when she married Clyde Lieurance. The marriage lasted almost 40 years, until Clyde's death in 1990. Edie now lives in Des Moines. A 1924 initiate at Drake, Edie served as chapter secretary for Iota Iota. An article Edie wrote, "A Motor Trip East," appeared in The Phoenix in 1935.

Lieurance, II, is the subject of a recently published book, "Portrait of a 20th Century Woman," by Jamie Gottula Buelt. After 25 years as a physical education teacher and principal, Edie returned to school. At the age of 53, she earned a degree in dental hygiene at the University of Pennsylvania. She then worked for 11 more years as a dental hygienist in the
Art teacher and exhibited artist Rita Argen Auerbach, illl, has been active in cultural exchange programs with Latvia, a former Soviet Union republic. She authored a book in 1987 titled, "Sketches and Reflections of a Journey to the Soviet Union," based on a 1986 visit to Riga, Latvia. The sketches were the gift of the 250 U.S. delegates to the Soviet Friendship Society. Rita made a second trip to Latvia in 1988 as an invited artist to hold the first American one-woman exhibition in the Latvian Academy of Art. Her third trip in 1989 was as an escort for Clarence High School

Province Day hosted This past spring, Alpha Chapter hosted Provinces VIII and IX Day. Ice breaker activities were followed by chapter presidents sharing chapter spotlights. Eleanor Borbas Williams, A, national rush chairman; Rosemary Carucci Goss, BIT, national vice president of extension; and Nancy Clohisy, EH, Province VIII director; led group discussions on idea sharing, rush and standards. Lunch was served in Longwood's Blackwell Dining Hall. After lunch, Rosemary Goss spoke on hazing and Steve Dealph, Greek affairs coordinator at Longwood, presented a workshop on interfratemal and panhellenic relations. Chapter enjoys spring activities Alpha Beta Chapter had a busy spring. The semester began with a visit from a chapter consultant. In March, members were visited by their parents. Families enjoyed an afternoon of bowling, a reception and a dance. Michelle Robins was crowned Greek week queen as the Alpha Betas walked away with first place overall. At the end of April, the chapter held its annual philanthropic project, "Puppy Love for Tally," in remembrance of AB member Tally Stephens, who was killed in an automobile accident. Each party represented a different theme. One of the more successful parties centered around a Valentine's Day theme and honored ALA exempler St. Valentine. Red, white and pink streamers were hung throughout the suite, and red and white balloons covered the ceiling. Rushees were greeted at the suite with heart shaped cookies and red punch. Spring rush Beta Beta Chapter had a spring informal rush that featured a new event each night of the week. The week began with an open house in which rushees came to hear about Alpha Sigma Alpha. fhe second night was very similar with everyone getting acquainted with one another. Greek week celebrated Epsilon Epsilon Chapter was involved in many activities this past spring. During the fourth week of April, the chapter participated in Greek week. A special event was scheduled for each day, ranging from Greek games to community service projects. The week ended on Thursday with the "All Greek" banquet. Epsilon Epsilon Chapter received the Highest Pledge Class GPA Award and the Countess Award, which is given to the chapter donating the most blood to the bloodmobile. Members receive honors The Phi Phi Chapter had a very busy spring semester. In January, members attended the Govenor's Leadership Forum. Spring formal was held in February and an open house was held in March to gamer interest in fall formal rush. State Day, Special Olympics and Greek week were activities held in the month of April. The theme, "Life's Short. Be Greek," had chapter members participating in the Greek sing, banner contest, Greek games and a philanthropic project. Awards received by the chapter at the Greek week banquet included most participation in the Greek games, two members being initiated into the Order of Omega, Mindy Lee being voted Outstanding Greek Woman and Melanie Griswald receiving the award for Outstanding President. COLLEGIATE CORNER On Frtday, April 2, a getacquainted pizza party was held. A brunch at a near-by hotel began the Saturday morning activities. Everyone then toured the site where the new Beta Rho chapter house is going to be built. A groundbreaking ceremony was held with many of Beta Rho's founding members participating. Spring rush After a long Christmas vacation, the Beta Sigma Chapter held spring rush. Rushees first took a room visit and met chapter members. Rushees were then invited back to the house the next day for a house tour. Refreshments were served and a slide show was presented. Chapter has busy spring Beta Upsilon Chapter participated in many different activities on campus this past spring. In January, chapter members participated in the campus-wide Greek weekend, placing third. The $50 prize was donated to the S. June Smith Center. March saw the chapter paired with the Theta Chi fraternity in the tandem bike race. The team placed sixth. In April, members participated in the Alpha Tau Omega/Chi Omega co-ed softball tournament, which benefitted two boys from the Terre Haute area who suffer from an unknown and incurable disease. Networking project started Through a cooperative effort between alumnae and collegiate chapters, networking can reap many positive benefits for those beginning a career. Gamma Eta Chapter implemented such a networking project as a result of Province Day, sponsored by the Alpha Gamma Chapter at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where Gretchen Erb Foust, Gamma Eta alumna, spoke on the topic. Chapter members carried Gretchen's ideas back to Penn State and began an alumnae networking system. The project has helped graduating members hook up with alumnae in their particular field of interest.

Spring activities Gamma Pi Chapter had a very busy spring semester. Chapter member Erin Ercoline was crowned Courtwarming queen. Erin, a sociology major, has held many offices within the chapter. The theme "Make a Date with an A'LA" was used for spring rush. A skit adapted from the television show "Studs" was performed. Get-away weekend The Delta Epsilon Chapter hopped the border for a "Get-Away Weekend" in Niagra Falls, Canada. The nights were spent dancing and watching the falls change different colors. The days were spent sightseeing through the town. Everyone took advantage of the museums, stores and restaurants. Some members went underneath the falls through the tunnels to get a different view. Greek weekend raises money Delta Eta Chapter participated in Greek weekend held April30-May 1. The event included a dance in which all profits were donated to a philanthropy. On Saturday, the Greek Olympics were held. Events included a big wheel race, water balloon toss and a

Greek game winners The Delaware Special Olympics, held annually at the university, gave Delta Iota Chapter members the opportunity to spend the day helping children from all over the state compete in a variety of sporting events. The chapter earned an overall fourth place in Greek week. Angela Pensabene tapped danced to the tune "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boys" and won first place and was crowned Greek goddess. Angie Farinas took second place in the "Looking Fit" contest.

Bloomsburg were events that united the university with the community. During Hands Across Bloomsburg. participants formed a chain through town to symbolize everyone could work together. Members participate in philanthropies Delta Omicron Chapter members welcomed spring this year by participating in an Easter egg hunt, which benefitted the Easter Seals Foundation, adopt-a-block and its 15th anniversary. Chapter members collected donations and started the egg hunt festivities. Held at a local mall, parents donated $1 each to have their children participate in the hunt. Donations benefitted the visually and hearing impaired. On April 24, the chapter took part in the annual adopt-a-block program at York College. Members joined the community and various campus organizations to clean up the city streets. Delta Omicron celebrated its 15th anniversary by inviting alumnae back to campus. The weekend included a night out, a dinner made by chapter members especially for alumnae and a letters luncheon at which everyone wore their favorite letter T-shirts. Earth Day included organizations who set up stands with environmental themes in the student union. This spring Epsilon Delta Chapter honored its seniors at its annual senior banquet. Graduating chapter members as well as Keith Weirich, past chapter sweetheart, and current sweetheart Rob Feltes were recognized. At the banquet, the chapter's Elizabeth Bird Small, Frost Fidelity, Ideal Pledge and Ideal Active awards and several other awards were given out to Epsilon Xi's undefeated volleyball team during Greek week deserving members. Chapter paints park equipment The Epsilon Nu Chapter painted playground equipment at a local park this past semester. The equipment was painted red to symbolize Alpha Sigma Alpha. Spring activities The Epsilon Xi Chapter had a very busy spring semester. The semester began with formal and open rush and moved on to philanthropic and panhellenic activities. Activities included Operation Snowflake, Multiple Sclerosis walk-a-thon, Daffodil Days.
On April 16, Epsilon Phi Chapter participated in the annual Indiana University Little 500 bike race. Qualifying 17th, Alpha Sigma Alpha finished sixth out of 24 teams. The effort earned the team the Most Improved Position Award. They also placed fourth overall in the race series, winning the Criterium event. Senior Captain Laura Naatz was the only returning rider, however, she was involved in a wreck early on and was unable to complete the race. Kim Smith, also a senior, was strong force for the team, riding 90 of the 100 laps. Kim was awarded the outstanding rookie trophy. Juniors Jennifer Richard and Adrienne Morgan rounded out the team.

Chapter enjoys first spring
