For Tola, art began as a way of making sense of the unspoken. Born at Peebles Hospital, Tola’s childhood was shaped by the warmth, openness and strong sense of connection that defines life in the British Virgin Islands. As a youngster she attended First Impressions School before moving on to Cedar International School, where sport, particularly football, became a major part of her identity. A talented player, she represented the BVI national team and eventually moved to Sweden at the age of 16 to pursue the game more seriously. But life based outside Gothenburg proved to be a profound culture shock. The pace, language, social landscape and pressure of competitive football were far removed from the close-knit openness of home. During that time, Tola found herself spending long stretches alone in her bedroom, drawing and painting as a way to express herself. “That was when I started applying myself to visual arts,” she reflects. “Art, especially the medium of charcoal, became a way to express emotions I didn’t always know how to talk about,” she says.

Her work explores emotion, mental health, relationships and the beauty that can exist in darker, more complicated spaces. Tola is drawn to contrast, movement and atmosphere. Her works are not always literal portraits; they are characters, impressions, fragments of feeling. She is less interested in perfect likeness than in whether a piece has ’it’ — that elusive, eye-catching presence that makes a viewer stop and feel something. After returning to Tortola during the COVID pandemic, Tola pursued an online art foundation course before studying Illustration at Norwich University of the Arts. There, she found a discipline that suited her instinct for storytelling. Illustration, for her, is art derived from narrative — a natural home for someone whose work expresses an emotional undercurrent. V I R G I N I S L A N D S P R O P E R T Y, YA C H T S & L I F E

allowed her to share technical skills, encourage artists of all ages and offer the kind of creative space she once needed herself. Her first exhibition marked another turning point. Curated with the support of Sophie, the show was built from pages of Tola’s sketchbooks — raw, intimate works created at various moments in her life. More than 75 per cent of the pieces sold. For an artist whose work had sometimes been described as too dark or too unusual, the response was affirming. “It made me feel like maybe I really can do this,” she says. Now, Tola is focused on rebuilding her portfolio, taking on commissions and fully embracing life as a working artist. While teaching at Creative Waves remains an important part of her journey, she is also allowing herself the space to create, experiment and pursue her own artistic path with confidence.

After university, like many young artists, she moved into hospitality work to pay the bills. Long hours left little space for creativity and for a while her artistic practice drifted away. Then came a call from Sophie Stanton at Creative Waves, asking if she would return home for three months to teach art. Through Creative Waves, Sophie has become known for supporting artists whose work pushes creative boundaries — something she recognised early in Tola’s emotionally expressive style. The Creative Waves Arts Hub has become a cornerstone of the Territory’s creative community, championing artistic exploration, learning and empowering young creatives to think beyond convention. Tola never planned on teaching, nor had she imagined moving back to Tortola. But she happily agreed. Three months became six, which then became indefinite. At Creative Waves, Tola discovered a natural connection with children and a new way of understanding her own practice. Teaching has

One Small Island, Many Shores to Discover

Few private islands in the Caribbean can match Peter Island’s five beaches. Deadman’s Beach, the jewel in the crown of the resort, is a long stretch of powdery white sand with wide open views across the Sir Francis Drake Channel towards Tortola. A short swim from the shore and you can often spot turtles gliding beneath the surface in near-perfect visibility. Just beyond lies Little Deadman’s Bay, a quieter extension that feels more secluded, ideal for those seeking a peaceful stretch of sand without venturing far from the resort’s heart.

Continue west to Honeymoon Beach, well suited for swimming and family-friendly water sports such as paddle boarding and kayaking, where calm waters and gentle breezes create an easy, relaxed atmosphere. On the opposite side of the island lies the quiet sanctuary of White Bay. Behind the North Sound Maxi Regatta is Valea Regattas. With deep roots in the international Grand Prix sailing circuit, the company created the regatta to bring world-class maxi yacht racing to the British Virgin Islands. Combining elite-level competition with the unique atmosphere of Virgin Gorda’s North Sound, Valea Regattas has in just two years established the event as one of the Caribbean’s most exciting additions to the global racing calendar.

Bartlett confirms the regatta is intentionally capped at approximately twenty yachts to preserve both the exclusivity and the calibre of competition. “Quality, not quantity, is what is most important to us,” Bartlett says candidly. “The best sailing teams and athletes, the most elite yachts in the world, competing in the world’s best sailing destination”, he continues.

“It’s an invitational-only event,” explains Valea’s Ben Bartlett. “We are selective about who we invite. The regatta is about close racing and we want to see the most competitive teams on the water.”

The regatta currently features three principal classes: the Maxi Class for the larger yachts, the Maxi Grand Prix Class for the highly optimised 72-foot race boats, and the Performance Class — elegant highperformance monohulls designed for both racing and luxury cruising.

The inaugural edition in 2025 welcomed seven yachts. In March of this year, the fleet expanded to eleven, with organisers already anticipating a further increase — though not without limits.

“The event brings everybody together in the North Sound,” Bartlett reflects. “On the water the competition is tough, but off the water everyone has a wonderful time.” This community spirit extends beyond the racecourse. Organisers have partnered with local environmental and youth initiatives, including Beyond the Reef, while also welcoming young sailors from the Royal BVI Yacht Club for dockside tours and meet-andgreets with professional sailing teams. For many of those children, it is their first close encounter with the extraordinary yachts and crews they have only previously seen from shore.

The Return of Maxi-Class Racing to the British Virgin Islands For longtime residents and sailors, the emergence of the North Sound Maxi Regatta also signals something deeply meaningful; the return of premier international maxi yacht racing to the British Virgin Islands. Prior to Hurricane Irma, the territory played host to several prestigious events that helped cement the territory’s status as the sailing capital. In the years following the storm, however, the absence of a dedicated maxi regatta left a noticeable void. The result has exceeded expectations.

Looking Ahead to 2027

Preparations are already underway for next year’s edition, scheduled for 10 to 14 March 2027. Organisers hint at an even stronger fleet, with rumours of additional J Class entries and an

expanded Performance division already building anticipation. Yet despite its rapid rise, the event’s vision remains laser focused. The North Sound Maxi Regatta is not trying to become the biggest regatta in the Caribbean. Its goal is simply to become the best. James “Jim” Scheiner has spent most

photography brands, he was simply a curious boy swimming in shallow water on Long Island, New York, fascinated by the hidden world beneath the surface.

Early next year, the renowned photographer releases his long-awaited book, British Virgin Islands: A Photographer’s Retrospective; a stunning visual archive decades in the making and a tribute to the islands that became his home 47 years ago.

Born in New York City in 1955, Jim grew up in a technically minded family. His father, Martin, was an engineer and entrepreneur who built an international medical electronics company. Martin’s talent for precision, problem-solving and innovation undoubtedly shaped Jim’s own technical abilities — something that would later become central to his approach to photography.

Jim and his siblings spent many summers on Long Island’s South Shore, where his fascination with the ocean began. While other children played on the beach, he snorkelled through shallow mudflats, searching for fish, spotting horseshoe crabs and a plethora of tiny marine life. “I would spend hours in six inches of water — I was just fascinated,” he said. That obsession deepened after the untimely death of his mother when he was 13. Hoping to reconnect the family, Martin took the children to the Florida Keys, where Jim experienced scuba diving for the first time. The moment was transformative. “We just sat there under the crystal clear water watching colourful fish swim around us - I couldn’t believe this existed,” he recalled.

Jim worked for pioneering dive operator George Marler at Aquatic Centres, where the job demanded complete focus and self-reliance. Dive operations in those days were far different from today’s stricter standards. “There were no crews, no dive site moorings,” Jim said. “I drove the boat, found the dive site, anchored, took a dozen divers on an adventure, brought them back safely and hauled anchor — all by myself.” The intensity of those years sharpened both his discipline and his attention to detail — qualities that would later define his photography. As his love of diving deepened, it became only natural for Jim to want to capture and share the world he was discovering underwater.

From that moment on, the ocean became the centre of his life. As a teenager, he travelled and worked throughout the Caribbean, diving in Barbados, Grenada, Tobago, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. By the age of 20, he had earned his diving instructor certification and was working professionally on dive boats across the region.

Photography became a natural extension of his fascination with the ocean. His father had experimented with early underwater movie cameras, but Jim became serious about still photography after moving to the Caribbean. Entirely self-taught, he immersed himself in mastering both the artistic and technical sides of film photography.

Although he attended the University of Pennsylvania and studied sociology, he spent much of his time teaching diving and returning to the Caribbean whenever he could. Eventually, the journey led him to the British Virgin Islands in 1979, during the early years of the territory’s recreational diving industry.

Fundamental to Jim’s success was his ability to evolve alongside photography itself. Over the course of his career, he successfully navigated the industry’s transformation from fully manual film cameras to the digital age, mastering each technological shift along the way.

Long before digital cameras and automatic settings, every image required careful calculations involving film and shutter speed, focus, aperture and light. “If you want to learn photography, you photograph bugs and flowers,” he said with a laugh. Underwater photography added even greater challenges — unreliable equipment, difficult lighting conditions and the constant pressure of working against the ocean itself. Yet Jim embraced the complexity. Armed with his trusted Nikonos underwater camera system and powerful strobes, he developed a distinctive style known for vivid colours, close-range compositions, striking underwater scenes and intimate diver and marine life interactions. “The less water you shoot through, the more colour and clarity you keep,” he explained.

For Jim, photography was far more than simply taking pictures. In the early 1980s Jim and his late first wife Odile founded Rainbow Visions as an underwater photography and videography company, combining their shared passion for diving, storytelling and exploration. In the early years, the pair became known not only in the BVI, but throughout the international diving community for leading many adventurous dive and photography expeditions to some of the world’s most remote and spectacular underwater destinations. Long before digital communication made global travel commonplace, Jim and Odile organised and escorted groups to places such as Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and other emerging worldclass dive destinations throughout the Pacific. The

trips developed a loyal following among divers and underwater photographers eager to explore reefs that few had seen. While Odile managed the social side of the expeditions, Jim became known for his technical mastery underwater and his relentless pursuit of the perfect image. The trips also gave him something invaluable — uninterrupted time beneath the surface in extraordinary environments. “We were doing five hours a day underwater,” Jim recalled. “The reefs started shallow, so even during decompression stops you were still diving and photographing.” Often remaining underwater long after everyone else had surfaced, Jim spent hours alone exploring reefs with his camera, patiently waiting for fleeting

moments of light, colour and marine life to align. Those expeditions helped him build the remarkable body of underwater imagery that would later define much of his career. Eventually, however, Rainbow Visions evolved beyond underwater photography. “Because the fish don’t pay well,” Jim joked. Jim and colleague Paul Hubbard expanded Rainbow Visions into a full-scale commercial photography and video production company, becoming synonymous with visual storytelling in the BVI. From tourism campaigns to corporate productions and real estate photography, Rainbow Visions helped visually document the evolution of the territory for decades. Even during the height of commercial success, Jim continued to build his enormous archive of images

capturing the BVI from beneath the waterline to high above the islands in helicopters and later using drones — capturing boats, events, landscapes, people, villas, watersports and the territory’s changing identity over nearly five decades. That archive is now brought to life in Jim’s book, British Virgin Islands: A Photographer’s Retrospective. More than a collection of beautiful photographs, the book is a historical record of a territory that Jim has observed through an intimate lens. Hurricane Irma and later the pandemic slowed his commercial work, giving him time to revisit thousands of carefully preserved slides, negatives and transparencies. For Jim, photography was never about quick results or instant gratification. It was about patience, precision and immersion. Many of his most memorable images were created after hours spent underwater alone waiting quietly for the right moment. Now retired, Jim lives in Tortola with his beloved wife Sybil, whom he first knew as a teenager growing up in New York — a full-circle chapter in a life shaped by adventure, creativity and connection. POPS OF PARADISE Preparation time: 15 min Cooling Time: 35 min Difficulty: Easy Serves: 6 Ingredients:

1 cup passion fruit puree 1/2 cup water 1 tablespoon lime juice 1/2 cup honey 1 cup ice cream; vanilla or coconut

Directions:

1. Combine all ingredients except the ice cream into a mixing bowl or large measuring cup and whisk until completely incorporated. 2. Pour the passion fruit mixture equally into each popsicle mold. Freeze for about 45 minutes until the mixture is slushy. 3. Spoon about 2-3 tablespoons of ice cream into the center of each mold, pushing it down gently so it sits in the center of the passion fruit mixture. 4. Insert the popsicle sticks and freeze for 6-8 hours, or overnight, until completely solid.
