Welcome
In this issue we whisk you away to one of my favourite corners of the BVI — White Bay, Jost Van Dyke — where The Hideout graces our cover. I recently stayed there with my family and it was every bit as dreamy as it looks. Our gorgeous villa sat just steps from the beach, complete with a plunge pool that our boys treated like their own private adventure zone!
We then hop across to Tortola’s east end for a closer look at Wyndham Lambert Beach Resort — nestled on one of the island’s most spectacular coastlines. Whether you’re a visitor or a potential real estate buyer, its a resort that offers the best of island living.
On Tortola’s north shore, we meet Scottie and Timpa, owners of a tiny container home that blends sustainability with down-toearth style.
In our first BVI Business section, created in partnership with BVI Finance, read all about the benefits of carrying out business in the BVI and FinTech On The Seas, an annual event that unites innovators to explore the future of digital finance.
Finally, we spotlight the BVI’s world-class bareboating scene.

Maestro of Music & Cuisine, Al Broderick
BY JULIAN PUTLEY

Over two decades ago, Al Broderick first captivated audiences at the iconic Last Resort in Trellis Bay. For charter yacht guests, the venue was already a popular stop, but in the early 2000s, when Al and his band Hot Sauce took the stage, it’s popularity skyrocketed. Visitors and residents were mesmerised by the originality and energy of his performances.
Behind the music lies an interesting back-story. After graduating from Plymouth University with a degree in theatre and media studies, Al moved to London.
Acting proved unfulfilling, so he swapped scripts for saucepans, working as a chef in Greenwich while busking on the London Underground to supplement his income. Cooking came naturally — his family were passionate foodies — and his career soon expanded into film-set catering.
Seasonal work in France’s ski resorts followed, where he also practiced his guitar playing. It was in the Alps that he met Jessica, a Chemical Engineering graduate from Sweden who would become his future wife. But for a while Al went solo working in the villa

Château de la Garoupe at Cap d’Antibes, owned by a Russian oligarch. Hungry for adventure, Al reunited with Jessica and the couple travelled through Indonesia, visiting remote islands such as Irian Jaya and the fabled Banda group.
A serendipitous introduction to Ben and Jessica Bamford of the Last Resort eventually brought them to the British Virgin Islands. What began as a holiday soon turned into a permanent move when Al accepted an offer to perform nightly at the Last Resort and later to work as its chef. His popularity quickly grew. Videos began circulating, private bookings increased, and he became one of the Caribbean’s most electrifying entertainers.
For four consecutive years, Sir Richard Branson has booked him to perform at New Year’s Eve parties on Moskito Island. He has also played at Branson’s Necker Island, Larry Page’s Eustatia Island and the ultra-exclusive Oil Nut Bay.

Al’s artistry extends further than the stage. He has become renowned for bespoke private dining experiences, often creating eight-course tasting menus with wine pairings. He loves to create interactive culinary journeys, inviting guests to learn techniques and participate in the creative process. One favourite dish: sea bass marinated in sake and miso, blackened and served with baby bok choy and a miso butternut squash purée.
When Hurricane Irma left much of Tortola in ruins, Broderick turned his skills towards helping the community, preparing free meals for residents left homeless. From that effort grew The Lunch Box at Tortola’s Cedar International School, now a fixture in an area with few dining options.
Away from the spotlight, Al is a family man. With Jessica and their two teenage children, he can often be found surfing at Josiah’s Bay.

The Hideout: White Bay’s Irresistible Double Allure
Where sun-kissed days, barefoot luxury, and Jost Van Dyke magic collide.

There are beaches in the Caribbean spoken of in reverent tones—stretches of sand so perfect they feel almost unreal. And then there is White Bay on Jost Van Dyke, a place that seems painted rather than formed: a crescent of dazzling white sand, turquoise water glowing in sunlight, and palms swaying dreamily at the shoreline. It is one of the most iconic anchorages in the British Virgin Islands—a spot where sailors long to moor, where visitors lose track of time, and where island style feels entirely effortless.
It is here, on this postcard-perfect bay, that Hendo’s Hideout and its sister luxury resort, The Hideout, have established a reputation far beyond Jost Van Dyke. What began as a family-owned beach bar in 2016, has grown into a complete lifestyle destination: a place to eat, drink, shop, stay, and slip into the easy rhythm that makes the BVI so adored.
Together, the Hendo’s duo offer a blend of authenticity and modern comfort—Jost Van Dyke charm with a contemporary edge.

Hendo’s Hideout: The Heartbeat of White Bay Walk along White Bay and you’ll spot the breezy, open-air layout of Hendo’s Hideout—unmistakably beach-chic and instantly inviting. It is one of the island’s most vibrant and beloved gathering spots: a beach bar and restaurant that manages to be both a crowd-pleaser and a character-rich local gem.
Hendo’s is known for its infectious energy. Music drifts across the sand, laughter rises from weathered wooden tables, a beach volleyball game may well be under way close by, and bartenders shake cocktails with effortless precision.
Sea-to-Table Fresh, Island-Crafted Flavour
The food at Hendo’s anchors the experience. The menu celebrates Caribbean flavour: fresh, bold and generous. The fish tacos are near-legendary, inspiring loyal returns year after year. Conch fritters, crisp and golden, are a staple on almost every table, while the lobster salad, when in season, is a sun-soaked indulgence that pairs beautifully with the setting. Daily specials showcase the island’s freshest catch,
prepared by chefs that understand exactly what its guests want: vibrant, flavourful dishes that taste unmistakably of the Caribbean.
Cocktails With a View
If you haven’t sipped a Hendo’s Painkiller with your toes in White Bay’s powder-soft sand, you haven’t fully experienced Jost Van Dyke. Their take on this BVI classic is smooth, balanced and quietly potent.
The bar menu extends well beyond the Painkiller. Rum-led creations nod to the BVI’s distilling heritage, while fresh ingredients add brightness and zest. From a refreshing lime cooler to a rich dark-andstormy, every drink is crafted for the climate, the scenery and the unmistakable mood of White Bay.
Boutique Treasures: Take a Piece of White Bay Home
Steps from the bar, the Hendo’s Hideout Boutique offers a curated selection of apparel, beach essentials and island-inspired accessories. The aesthetic is clean, coastal and effortlessly stylish. Browse

everything from premium logo wear and boho-chic cover-ups to reef-friendly sunscreen, handmade jewellery and artisan-crafted keepsakes. Each item feels like an extension of Hendo’s relaxed hospitality—an easy way to carry a little piece of Jost Van Dyke home.
The Hideout: White Bay’s New Standard for Boutique Luxury
While Hendo’s brings the energy, The Hideout— just a short stroll along the beach—brings luxury and tranquillity. This intimate, thoughtfully designed boutique resort has elevated White Bay accommodation to a new level. With seven private villas, it offers an exclusivity rare even in the BVI.
Each villa at The Hideout is an ode to airy Caribbean elegance. High ceilings, clean architectural lines and generous windows frame sweeping ocean views. Interiors blend contemporary design with natural textures—warm woods, muted linens and coastal décor that is luxurious yet understated.
Layouts are thoughtful: serene bedrooms offer quiet refuge, while open-plan living spaces spill onto expansive terraces designed for lounging or entertaining. Each villa features its own private plunge pool — a peaceful setting for morning coffee, sunset cocktails or slow afternoons in the island breeze.
Just steps from the sand, guests wake to gentle surf and end their evenings beneath star-filled skies. It is boutique luxury at its most intimate.
One of the things that makes The Hideout so special is its rare balance of seclusion and convenience. Private pathways, seagrape-shielded balconies and lush landscaping create a sense of complete escape. Yet within moments, guests can wander to Hendo’s Hideout for lunch, stroll along the beach for a swim, or watch the lively flotilla of day visitors drifting into White Bay.
This balance of calm and vibrancy is what makes The Hideout a must-do. Serenity and social energy are available at any moment—each only steps away.

The Hendo’s–Hideout Connection
Together, Hendo’s Hideout and The Hideout offer a seamless blend of dining, leisure, luxury accommodation and authentic island culture. Days unfold barefoot on the beach, between sun lounger and bar stool, between swims, naps and beach games.
Many guests first discover Jost Van Dyke through Hendo’s, fall in love with the atmosphere, and later return to stay at The Hideout. Others begin at the resort and quickly adopt Hendo’s as their daily ritual. The synergy feels natural, intuitive and deeply aligned with the rhythm of White Bay.
Why White Bay Still Captivates the World
Though White Bay’s fame has soared, its essence remains unchanged. The water is still impossibly clear. The sand remains pure and powder-soft. Sunsets still brush the sky with tropical colour. Even as nearby islands evolve, White Bay holds fast to a timeless charm.

Hendo’s Hideout and The Hideout honour that legacy. This boutique, luxurious resort and restaurant’s architecture sits gently in the landscape. The service reflects the warmth of the community, and the atmosphere keeps pace with the barefoot spirit that makes this bay so special.

TINY HOME BIG LOVE
On a breezy Tortola hillside, Scottie Hiller and Timpa Holt transformed two shipping containers into a beautifully designed home.
BY ERIN PAVIOUR-SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY BY VIRGIN PORTRAITS

Perched high above Tortola’s north shore is a small container home that blends seamlessly into the hillside. Compact, clever and full of character it reflects the partnership of the couple who built it and one Sunday afternoon I have the joy of exploring it with them.
Before we tour the house they take me back four years. I have heard snippets of how Scottie and Timpa met, but hearing them recount it together in their living room over a glass of chilled New Zealand Pinot Grigio feels far sweeter.
Scottie, a pilot with Cape Air remembers seeing Timpa, a charter yacht captain with VOYAGE Charters on one of her flights. “He was wearing a black T-shirt and had a guitar slung over his shoulder” she says. Their next encounter was fleeting and unexpected — before they finally met properly at The Elm in Cane Garden Bay. This time they talked, shared a few laughs and swapped numbers.
PREVIOUS SPREAD The swing seat - The couple’s favourite spot for drinks as the sun goes down. THIS PAGE Steel softened by island design. OPPOSITE FROM TOP A home layered with personality. Partners in life and design - Timpa and Scottie.

Their first date stretched long into the night: Led Zeppelin, stories, music and an unmistakable spark. Soon they were talking about Scottie’s land, sketching ideas and imagining what they might create together.
When I first visited the property I could hardly picture its beginnings. They described the first time they explored the land together — just steep, tangled bush so dense they had to carve a path with a machete. But once they reached the rock at the top corner of the land they fell in love with the view that opened in a dramatic sweep of sea, cliffs and rolling green hills. “This is it!” they both recalled saying at the time.

SketchUp offered possibilities, but nothing stirred their excitement — until one morning Scottie woke with a single decisive thought: containers. She loved the efficiency, the strength and the challenge of making compact spaces feel expansive.
When she said it aloud Timpa immediately visualised how to build it. Her designer’s instinct and his background in construction aligned perfectly and from that moment on they worked as a team.
Initially they toyed with designing a small, traditional home. The 3D modelling software
Standing with them on the deck, Scottie describes positioning the two containers with a 10-foot offset. “Once I moved one forward everything suddenly worked” she says. And it does: the kitchen found its place, air flows around the bar and the home feels far larger than its footprint.
During construction, they cut roughly 20 feet of steel to open the main living area and Timpa reinforced the opening with welded I-beams. One container forms their cosy bedroom suite and the other houses the indoor living space and kitchen. Flowing naturally from there is the breezy outdoor dining space and raised seating area above.
As anyone who has built in the BVI knowsresourcefulness is essential. Rather than import expensive fittings, the couple worked with a talented local craftsman who produced beautiful custom mahogany doors and windows at a fraction of the cost.
Their kitchen and wardrobes came as a single budget-friendly package and as we walk through the home they point out the decisions that make tiny living work: hidden niches, multipurpose spaces and the later addition of a laundry and storage extension that integrates seamlessly into the design.
Outside is where the spirit of the home truly shines. The swing seat — built utilising cushions that Scottie kept from a previous home — hangs in the perfect wind channel. The deck sprinkled with personal touches serves as a living and dining room as well as evening lounge all at once.
When the couple hosted Timpa’s family for dinner soon after they moved in, it was clear they needed another table for appetisers and drinks — so Timpa simply built one.
Standing on the deck and looking back at the structure, I understand exactly what they mean when they say the house “found its shape”. Two containers rest lightly across the hillside, softened by warm wood and greenery.
This home is far more than steel boxes reimagined. It is a testament to a shared life — built piece by piece, idea by idea with humour, grit and deep affection visible in every detail.

SOAKING UP THE SUN -OR STUMBLING
UPON A BUSINESS
OPPORTUNITY
BY CHARLOTTE BAILEY
Visitors to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) often come for the beaches, sailing and sunshine — but many don’t realise they’ve stepped into one of the world’s most sophisticated and well-regulated international business centres.
Financial services generate the majority of the Territory’s GDP, standing alongside tourism as a cornerstone of the economy. Far from being a niche sector, the BVI has become a trusted global platform supporting cross-border trade investment, and
long-term planning for companies and investors around the world.
This standing is built on a strong legal and regulatory framework and the Territory’s reputation as a responsible, innovative international finance jurisdiction. Once labelled simply ‘offshore business,’ today the BVI is recognised as a leading International Financial Centre — transparent, modern and essential to global commerce.

Why the BVI Works for Business
1. A favourable tax environment
With no corporate income tax, capital gains tax or inheritance tax, the BVI offers a legal and efficient jurisdiction for international structuring.
2. Fast, efficient incorporation
Company formation is streamlined and straightforward, allowing businesses to set up quickly and with confidence.
3. Stability you can rely on
A politically stable environment and a legal system rooted in English common law give businesses the predictability needed for long-term strategy.
4. English-speaking jurisdiction
As English is the official language, communication and transactions with international partners are seamless.
5. Close to the United States
The Territory’s proximity to the US provides natural advantages for cross-border commerce.
6. Strong, modern regulation
The BVI strikes the balance between being businessfriendly and properly regulated — a combination that has become its hallmark.
7. A thriving international hub
Multinational corporations and investors continue to choose the BVI as part of their global operations, supported by a mature ecosystem of service providers, banks, and law firms.
The People Behind the Structures
The BVI’s success is powered by an experienced network of professionals who understand the Territory’s regulatory landscape inside and out. Their expertise in compliance, corporate structuring and tax matters helps businesses navigate the international environment with clarity and confidence.
Of course, global standards are evolving and it remains essential for businesses to comply with both BVI regulations and those of their home jurisdictions. Transparency and good governance are part of doing business in today’s world — and the BVI continues to adapt to meet those expectations.
So next time you’re sipping a Painkiller on Jost Van Dyke or gliding through the turquoise waters of Virgin Gorda’s Baths, remember: the BVI isn’t only Nature’s Little Secret — it could also be the starting point for your next great business venture.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BVI FINANCE
Hosted by BVI Finance, Fintech on the Seas brings together global fintech leaders, regulators, and investors for three days of discussion, collaboration and discovery at Sir Richard Branson’s private escape in the beautiful British Virgin Islands — Necker Island. This is no ordinary conference. It is an exciting showcase of the BVI: its innovation,

hospitality and growing influence in the global digital economy.
“Fintech on the Seas is not only showcasing the BVI’s fintech ecosystem,” explained Elise Donovan, CEO of BVI Finance, “but also the extraordinary setting that makes this jurisdiction so unique. The guests

experience the spectacular environment, unique culture, delicious food and professionalism that define who we are.”
In recent years, the BVI has accelerated its efforts to position itself as a global digital assets hub, following the introduction of its Virtual Assets Service Providers
(VASP) Act in 2023. That landmark legislation, along with the Fintech Sandbox launched by the BVI Financial Services Commission, has laid the groundwork for blockchain-based companies, crypto funds and fintech start-ups to flourish in the territory.
“Our financial services sector has always moved swiftly to meet the needs of global business,” Ms Donovan said. “From our early success with company incorporations and investment funds to today’s digital frontier, the BVI continues to offer the stable, neutral and professional environment that innovative enterprises are looking for.”
That environment, she added, is defined by three key strengths: legal strength and certainty, tax neutrality and a trusted reputation built over four decades. “Investors want jurisdictions that are reliable, legally reputable, politically stable and globally connected. The BVI ticks every one of those boxes,” said Ms Donovan.

From Vision to Voyage
The concept for Fintech on the Seas was born three years ago — part strategic outreach, part creative experiment. “We wanted to create an event that reflected the BVI’s character: innovative, independent and naturally beautiful,” said Ms Donovan. After an initial ocean-going venue proved too complex given the timeframe, Sir Richard Branson’s team at Necker Island extended an invitation to host. “We could not think of a more perfect venue,” said Ms Donovan.
The result was an intimate, world-class summit that drew 150 delegates in total, hailing from 16 countries — including the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia. “We reached capacity almost immediately,” Ms Donovan recalled. “The excitement was incredible.”
Each day offered something different. Guests travelled to Necker Island by boat across shimmering
seas each morning, where there were lively panel sessions overlooking the beach and evening celebrations infused with island flair. “We had a traditional pig roast, Moko Jumbie dancers, fire eaters — even lemurs watching the panel discussions from the roof of Necker Island’s Great House!” she laughed. “It was a uniquely BVI experience that captured the hearts and minds of our guests.”
Serious Conversations, Relaxed Setting
While the setting was idyllic, the content was substantial. Fintech on the Seas explored pressing global topics — from virtual asset regulation and digital identity to cybersecurity and sustainable innovation.
Among the standout speakers was Amanda Wick, a former US Department of Justice prosecutor who worked extensively in the cryptocurrency sector and helped investigate the 6 January insurrection.

Ms Wick delivered a thought-provoking keynote and hosted a book signing that prompted deep conversations about compliance and integrity in the fast-moving world of digital finance. Other sessions spotlighted innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean — including presentations on crypto ATMs in Central America and blockchain applications emerging across the region. “It was a truly international conversation,” said Ms Donovan. “We welcomed industry leaders from as far as Guatemala and Argentina, sharing insights alongside our local professionals. It demonstrated the BVI’s ability to connect across borders,” she continued.
The relaxed island environment fostered genuine dialogue. “At most conferences, people sit back and listen,” Ms Donovan observed. “Here, they were fully engaged — talking during breaks, exploring the island, taking photos with wildlife. It was professional, but also personal.”
A Global Network Anchored in Stability
Fintech on the Seas underscored what sets the BVI apart: its combination of world-class expertise and an unwavering commitment to stability. “Our jurisdiction offers neutrality — both politically and fiscally — and a trusted legal system grounded in English common law,” she said. “We don’t impose additional layers of tax on international business, and we provide a framework that investors understand and respect.”
That confidence is strengthened by the region’s judicial integrity. The BVI forms part of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court system, with final appeals heard by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London. “It’s a system that offers legal clarity and global credibility,” Ms Donovan noted proudly, adding that Dame Janice Pereira, a BVIslander and former Chief Justice, now serves as a member of the
OPPOSITE & ABOVE FinTech on the Seas in full swing, under the watchful eye of Necker Island’s lemurs. BELOW Sampling a delicious locallyinspired meal at Scrub Island Resort.

Privy Council — a powerful symbol of the territory’s stature and achievement.
BVI firms, too, bring global reach and professional excellence. “Our practitioners are connected to international networks,” Ms Donovan said. “Many firms have offices in other locations around the world, meaning clients here have access to expertise across time zones and jurisdictions.”
Momentum for 2026 and Beyond
As the event concluded with a beachside picnic at Oil Nut Bay, delegates departed with more than new insights — they left with a sense of belonging to something special.
“The feedback was phenomenal,” said Ms Donovan. “People were sharing their experiences on social media, calling it the best conference they had ever attended. It created momentum.”
That enthusiasm has fuelled plans for Fintech on the Seas 2026. “The interest is coming not just from this year’s participants, but from the wider fintech community who have heard about it,” she said. “It’s proof that the BVI’s blend of innovation, expertise and island spirit resonates globally.”
As the BVI continues to build on its digital ambitions, Fintech on the Seas stands as both symbol and celebration — a vivid reminder that innovation does not have to come from glass towers or corporate boardrooms. Sometimes, it can rise from turquoise waters, on islands that have long understood the value of connection, trust and vision.

CATAMARAN CRUSH
The bareboat
charter scene
in the British Virgin Islands, long celebrated as the best in the world, is evolving in exciting new ways.
BY ERIN PAVIOUR-SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF HORIZON YACHT CHARTERS & VOYAGE CHARTERS
There’s a special kind of magic that comes from taking the helm yourself — slipping the lines and setting a course for wherever your curiosity leads. In the British Virgin Islands, this kind of adventure has never been more accessible, more comfortable or more attuned to modern travellers’ tastes.
Catamarans keep stealing the show
Catamarans have become the vessel of choice for many bareboat sailors. With their wide decks,

generous cabins and inherent stability, catamarans are perfect for groups who want to island-hop in comfort. You can nose up to the beach at Anegada’s Loblolly Bay or anchor in the turquoise shallows of White Bay without spilling your sundowner.
Charter companies now offer sleek, solar-equipped models that pair performance with luxury. And it’s not just seasoned sailors booking them — more firsttimers are stepping aboard, thanks to easy handling, on board Wi-Fi and digital navigation aids.

Green is the new blue
With the islands’ pristine reefs and crystal-clear waters at stake, sustainability is no longer just a marketing term — it’s a movement. Many charter companies have introduced hybrid-powered yachts, solar-assisted systems and eco-provisioning services, whilst owners consider low-emission engines and hull designs that reduce fuel use.
Charterers are encouraged to use reef-safe sunscreen, refillable water bottles and the BVI National Parks Trust’s mooring buoys to protect fragile seabeds.
Across the BVI, sailing ‘lightly’ has become part of the adventure — a way to enjoy paradise responsibly. It’s now possible to spend a week exploring these islands with minimal environmental impact, powered by nothing more than the sun and the BVI’s favourable trade winds.
VIRGIN
THIS SPREAD Wide decks, endless horizons. Catamarans are leading the BVI bareboat evolution.

Smart tech makes smooth sailing
Technology is taking the stress out of bareboat charters. Before even arriving in Tortola, travellers can now complete their check-in, provisioning and safety briefings online. Charter bases offer apps for weather updates, digital charts and local cruising guides. Onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth sound systems mean you can stream island tunes as you glide past Norman Island or anchor off The Baths. For returning sailors, this digital ease makes the whole experience more spontaneous — it’s never been simpler to plan a last-minute escape to the islands.
Culinary and experiential sailing
Bareboat trips are no longer just about sailing — they’re about experiences. Charterers now plan routes around culinary stops such as the Cooper Island Beach Club’s microbrewery or Saba Rock’s sunset dining. Others combine sailing with yoga retreats, underwater photography or kitesurfing. Several charter companies partner with local chefs and suppliers to stock yachts with locally sourced produce and rum-tasting kits, turning each voyage into a true BVI cultural immersion.
Training and accessibility for newcomers
The BVI’s protected waters make them a natural training ground for new skippers. Many operators offer ‘confidence sails’ — short sessions with a professional skipper on day one — or full RYAcertified training courses on either Tortola or Virgin Gorda. This approach lowers the entry barrier for first-time charterers and ensures safety without compromising independence.
Your first bareboat adventure: a simple checklist
Before you go:
• Book early: High season (December–April) fills fast. Reserve six months ahead for the best selection.
• Decide on your itinerary: Talk to your charter company and research the various islands to come up with a route for your charter — Norman Island, Cooper Island, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke make a classic loop.
• Provision smartly: Pre-order supplies from one of the many local provisioning companies to save time on arrival.
• Travel covered: Make sure your insurance includes sailing activities.
What to pack:
• Soft luggage (it stows easily).
• Reef-safe sunscreen, polarised sunglasses and light cotton clothing with a windbreaker just in case.
• Quick-dry towels, reusable water bottles and eco-friendly toiletries.
When you arrive:
• Inspect your yacht thoroughly before departure.
• Get a weather update and confirm local mooring regulations.
• Respect the reefs and use mooring buoys where available.
• Keep an eye on your batteries and water supply — sustainability starts onboard.
• Relax and take your time. In the BVI, distances are short and pleasures long.
Bareboat chartering in the BVI has always been about freedom — the freedom to go where you please, at your own pace, surrounded by endless horizons. What’s changing is how that freedom is experienced: more sustainable, more comfortable and more attuned to the lifestyle that makes the BVI so irresistible.
Whether you’re charting your first course through the Sir Francis Drake Channel or returning for another round of barefoot luxury, the BVI remains the ultimate canvas for your Caribbean adventure — one sunset sail at a time.

BAREBOATING REFINED - The VOYAGE Approach

BY ERIN PAVIOUR-SMITH
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARIBBEAN JULES PHOTOGRAPHY & REEF DOWNING
ABOVE
VOYAGE590 catamaran at anchor, Sandy Spit, Jost Van Dyke. OPPOSITE Designed for effortless onboard living.
Established in 1996 at Soper’s Hole Marina in Tortola, VOYAGE Charters works closely with its sister company, VOYAGE Yachts in Cape Town, South Africa, to deliver a charter fleet designed specifically for the demands of bareboating in the BVI.
VOYAGE yachts are created by sailors, maintained by experts and trusted by loyal guests who understand the difference that thoughtful craftsmanship makes to their charter experience.
Design That Works Harder
VOYAGE puts usability at the forefront. Wide beams support generous living spaces without compromising performance, while the signature forward cockpit improves airflow and enhances the natural social dynamic on board. Raised helms provide clear sight lines and walk-through sterns make everything—from docking to diving in for a swim—effortlessly intuitive.
Inside, the layouts are intentionally practical: galleys that function like home kitchens, refrigeration that works reliably and storage designed to accommodate a week—or two—of life under sail.
Durability is equally embedded in the design ethos. Using advanced composites, VOYAGE Yachts

engineers each hull for strength without unnecessary weight. This contributes to the distinctive balance of stability, speed and fuel efficiency—an equilibrium that becomes especially welcome during inter-island passages.
Introducing the New VOYAGE 510
The latest addition to the fleet, the VOYAGE 510, represents a new chapter in bareboat comfort and capability. Purpose-built for the realities of charter life in the BVI, the 510 blends increased volume with VOYAGE’s signature balance and performance.
Expansive deck spaces, an enhanced forward cockpit and a beautifully proportioned saloon create an easy flow between indoor and outdoor living—ideal for families or groups who want to spread out without sacrificing sailing efficiency.
Below deck, the VOYAGE 510 offers a refined cabin layout with upgraded finishes, generous natural light and thoughtful storage throughout. Each element has been considered with bareboaters in mind: reliable systems, accessible engine rooms and intuitive controls that keep the sailing experience stressfree. The result is a yacht that is modern, spacious and exceptionally well suited to exploring the BVI—another evolution of VOYAGE’s long-standing commitment to purposeful design.

VOYAGE Charters - Your Options
There are three distinct charter options, tailored to varying levels of sailing experience and desired support.
Bareboat
For experienced sailors seeking independence, the Bareboat Charter offers complete freedom. Guests take the helm and explore the islands at their own pace. The fleet is equipped with modern amenities such as water makers, advanced navigation tools and full safety gear. A sailing résumé is required and an optional Day Skipper service is available for those who would like additional guidance, particularly at the start of their vacation.
Bareboat with Skipper
For those who prefer the boat without the responsibility of managing it alone, the ‘Yacht and Captain’ package provides the reassurance of a professional skipper. It is an easy balance of
independence and comfort, allowing guests to relax while benefiting from local knowledge and expert handling.
Private Crewed Charter
VOYAGE offers fully private, all-inclusive charters— complete with a dedicated crew, including a chef. It’s an effortless way to explore the islands in absolute comfort with your every need taken care of.
Online Innovation
VOYAGE’s newly launched website brings the same clarity and user-centric thinking found in their yachts to the charter booking process. The customer portal has been thoughtfully redeveloped to make exploring the fleet, checking availability and understanding charter options feel effortless.

charter allows guests to assess their choices without unnecessary complexity. This new platform is a digital extension of VOYAGE’s renowned innovation both on and off the water.
Why 30 Years Matters
VOYAGE’s longevity is rooted in three decades of consistency—consistent innovation, consistent maintenance and consistently genuine relationships with guests who return year after year.
The yachts are deliberately and meticulously maintained. Systems work as they should and reliability isn’t something that needs to be requested—it is simply assumed. This quiet dependability is central to VOYAGE’s reputation for smooth, stress-free bareboating.
Trusted Time and Again
Returning VOYAGE guests often describe a sense of “coming home”—to the yachts, to the team and to
the islands themselves. With a privately owned fleet receiving hands-on care, upgrades are continual and thoughtful. Many members of the VOYAGE base team have been with the company for years, greeting returning sailors by name.
There is a distinctly boutique feel to the experience— polished, deeply personal. From warm welcome-aboard moments and high-quality linens to immaculate catamarans and dependable systems, everything is designed to support the kind of charter where worry fades into the background.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CONCH CHARTERS
THIS PAGE Pure BVI sailing fun with Conch Charters. OPPOSITE FROM TOP Cindy Chestnut & Brian Gandey in the early days. The Conch Charters team circa 1989. Brian backpacking in Canada.

The team at Conch Charters are a refreshing reminder of what drew sailors to these waters in the first place: authenticity, warmth and a can-do attitude based on a genuine love for sailing and the BVI.
What began as a young couple’s dream in the mid1980s is now a thriving, family-run charter and yacht management company with 45 yachts in its fleet — yet still intimate enough that returning clients are greeted by name.
This is the story of how Brian Gandey and Cindy Chestnut transformed a holiday tradition into one of the most loved charter companies in the territory.
Humble Beginnings
Long before Conch Charters existed Brian had fallen in love with the BVI as an 18-year-old backpacker. Years later, after he and Cindy married, escaping the Canadian winter for two weeks in the Caribbean became an annual ritual.
During one of these trips while staying at the old Castle Maria Hotel the owner, Alfred “Chris” Christopher casually asked, “Do you want to live here? Because the charter yacht industry seems to be taking off”. What happened next felt almost unreal.
Chris invited the governor of the BVI — living next door at the time — to chat with the couple about their idea of launching a charter business. Brian laughs as he recalls the governor simply strolling over to the hotel with no security or fanfare.
Later, the then-Chief Minister echoed his support after meeting with the trio for drinks. He explained the rapid rise of bareboat chartering and encouraged them to apply for a trade licence.
The process that followed was a mixture of ideal timing and good fortune. Brian and Cindy’s application landed on the desk of the permanent secretary at the time who approved it after checking their references with Chris at the Castle Maria Hotel. The stamped trade licence soon arrived in Montreal and, with that their lives changed course.

“We sold everything we owned so that we could buy two boats to start the fleet — an Allmand 31 and an O’Day 37 centre cockpit,” Cindy recalls. “Talk about putting your money where your mouth is!” she laughs.
Their first ever charter took place aboard the Allmand 31 and the story has become part of Conch Charters folklore. Six New York firemen set off in the days before dependable islandwide communications. When their VHF failed to communicate over Tortola’s mountains, they sauntered into a beach bar, picked up a landline and called the office — teasing Brian for sending them out on a boat named “Nishekazi” on 7 December, Pearl Harbour Day. Their humour set the tone for a long-standing relationship and the guests returned many times over the years.
From these small beginnings, Conch Charters grew.
Cindy sums it up perfectly - “We might not have marble tiles everywhere, but we have fun docks and we have heart.”
A Diverse Fleet — Something for Every Sailor
Conch Charters now manages a fleet of around 45 yachts, offering an impressive range of monohulls and catamarans for charter.

When other charter companies folded, Brian and Cindy acquired more boats. Cindy eventually left her career as a senior bank manager in Montreal to join full-time, while Brian — who holds a hotel management degree — took charge of operations. “We were just running a floating hotel with rooms that move around,” Brian says with a grin.
“We don’t like saying no,” adds Ian Clark, who first joined the company in 2013. “If its possible, we will make it happen”, he continues. This mindset is what defines Conch Charters. Their docks are functional, the atmosphere relaxed and their staff are known for forming lasting relationships with returning guests.
This diversity is one of their greatest strengths. Whether guests want a budgetfriendly monohull, a roomy family catamaran, or a newer model with all the modern conveniences, Conch Charters can accommodate them. “We’ve got a broad range,” Ian says. “Whatever our guests prefer, we probably have it.”
Their boats come from a variety of sources—a mixture of pre-owned charter vessels and brand-new yachts from European manufacturers. All are privately owned and, after purchase, placed into Conch Charters’ yacht management programme, which is equally accommodating.
Owners face no blackout restrictions, meaning they can use their yacht any time they wish—something almost unheard of with larger operators.
Flexibility At Its Core — The Conch Charters Advantage
One word captures Conch Charters better than any other: flexibility.

Unlike many companies that require rigid Saturday-to-Saturday scheduling, Conch Charters allows guests to start their charter on any day of the week, depending on availability. This means quieter anchorages, better flight pricing and greater convenience.
Their year-round specials underline this adaptability:
- Nine nights for the price of seven during high season;
- Ten nights for the price of seven during low season;
- Multi-week and multi-boat discounts;
- Returning-client discounts; and
- Flash promotions to fill last-minute gaps.
They also offer the option to add a skipper or chef (or both) to bareboat charters. And for guests seeking fully crewed yachts outside the Conch Charters fleet, they act as brokers.
As modern yachts grow increasingly complex, Conch Charters has expanded its team of mechanics and technicians to maintain fast turnaround times and high standards of care.
“We react very quickly,” Ian says. “Guests aren’t numbers to us—and that makes all the difference.”
A Family Business—with Generations of Loyal Guests
Conch Charters may be larger than it once was, but at its core it is still a family business. Brian and Cindy later partnered with Peter Twist—whose son Jeremy and daughter-in-law Rasika are part of the team— adding a new generation to the company’s continuity.
What may be even more extraordinary is the number of guests who have become multi-generational regulars themselves.
“We’ve known some charterers since before they were parents. Now they’re bringing their grandchildren to charter with us,” Cindy says.
That level of loyalty is special in the yacht charter world and speaks to the company’s consistency, warmth and sincere connection with its customers.

BY ERIN PAVIOUR-SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF DUOTONE & LIFT

IN THE BVI—where adventure is part of everyday island life—a new era of watersports has taken flight.
Deep Bay Watersports has teamed up with global leaders Duotone and Lift to bring cutting-edge foiling to the North Sound and beyond. Their next-generation e-foil and wingfoil experiences are reshaping how visitors and residents connect with the sea, from beginner-friendly lessons to performance gear for seasoned riders.
Fast, smooth, silent and endlessly exhilarating, foiling isn’t just a trend—it’s the future of ocean play.

THE MAGIC OF E‑FOILING: FLIGHT OVER WATER
Picture yourself hovering above glass-clear water, the foil beneath your board slicing silently through the sea. That’s the irresistible magic of the Lift e-foil—the world’s leading electric hydrofoil and a must-try for ocean lovers.
You don’t need wind, waves or prior board-sports experience. On calm days, when traditional activities slow down, the e-foil delivers pure, uninterrupted fun.
With Lift based just over the water in Puerto Rico, Deep Bay Watersports benefits from direct access to the newest boards, updates and expertise. A full charge gives around two hours of effortless cruising—enough to explore quiet bays, skim along untouched coastline and glide past some of the BVI’s most beautiful anchorages. It’s part adventure, part meditation and the closest thing to human flight.
BEGINNER‑FRIENDLY FUN
E-foiling has surged in popularity thanks to its accessibility. Deep Bay Watersports offers two-hour beginner lessons for up to six guests—ideal for families, yacht groups and friends seeking something new.
After a safety briefing and on-land introduction, riders take to the water with the fundamentals already in place. Most guests are up and foiling within a single session. Instructors focus on confidence and control, creating a relaxed, encouraging environment. Once that first lift happens, the rest is pure joy.
Experienced riders can book two-hour rentals or weekly charters, delivered directly to yachts or any BVI marina.
WING FOILING: A NEW WIND‑POWERED RIDE
While e-foiling offers powered flight, wing foiling brings riders back to the wind—only in a lighter, more intuitive way.
As the official Duotone affiliate in the BVI, Deep Bay Watersports carries the latest wings, foils and boards from one of the world’s most innovative watersports brands. Each year Duotone pushes boundaries with lighter materials, faster profiles and highly responsive designs.
Wing foiling has revived the local wind-sports community, drawing windsurfers and kiters back to the water with a sport that’s easier on the body, requires minimal equipment and delivers the addictive thrill of foiling. With the board lifted above the chop, every ride is smooth, fluid and quietly electrifying.

An Eco Explorer’s Guide to the British Virgin Islands
BY ERIN PAVIOUR-SMITH

Beyond the beach bars, a quieter revolution is taking place. Across this idyllic Caribbean archipelago, sustainability has become the new currency of travel — and eco-conscious explorers are finding a paradise that gives back.
Following the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, the British Virgin Islands faced a hard truth: paradise is fragile. In the years since, residents and business owners have reimagined tourism. From coral-reef rehabilitation to solar-powered villas, eco initiatives now shape the identity of these islands.

“Nature is one of our greatest assets in the British Virgin Islands,” says Natasha Chalwell, Deputy Director of Tourism. “Our beaches, reefs and pristine landscapes are not just scenery — they are the soul of our islands. Protecting them is not only environmental responsibility; it’s safeguarding our way of life and the future of BVI tourism” she continues.
The result is a destination where sustainability does not mean sacrifice — it means savouring the natural world more deeply.
Sailing into Sustainability
Sailing is part of the territory’s DNA, which is why it is officially known as The British Virgin Islands – Sailing Capital of the WorldTM. The steady trade winds and calm seas between its many beautiful and uniquely different islands have made these waters a global sailing mecca.
Charter companies such as Dream Yacht Charters, The Moorings and VOYAGE Charters now offer fuelefficient or hybrid boats and encourage visitors to offset emissions. Many sailors are adopting zero-waste principles — swapping single-use plastics for reusable bottles and refilling tanks with desalinated water.

Anchoring is regulated to protect seagrass beds and eco-moorings have been installed at popular snorkelling spots. Sailors can explore the stunning coral gardens of destinations such as The Indians in comfort, knowing their footprint is as light as the sea breeze.
Land -Based Adventure Awaits
The BVI offers a wealth of adventures that celebrate the landscape while treading lightly on it. From rainforest trails to turquoise lagoons, the islands reward those who explore under their own power.
OPPOSITE Hike the hills and take it all in. THIS PAGE FROM TOP Sailing lightly through paradise. Low-impact adventure, high reward with Hike BVI kayaking tours.

Hiking is one of the most rewarding ways to connect with nature. On Tortola, Sage Mountain National Park — the highest peak in the Virgin Islands — is laced with trails through mahogany forests alive with songbirds. The shaded canopy provides a cool escape and breathtaking views of the surrounding cays.
Virgin Gorda’s Gorda Peak National Park is a shorter but equally stunning climb, with a lookout over the island’s famous Baths National Park — a maze of granite boulders and tidal pools formed millions of years ago.
For ocean lovers, Tortola’s Apple Bay has earned cult status among Caribbean surfers. Local surf schools such as Surf School BVI at Josiah’s Bay provide lessons and rentals whilst promoting ocean awareness and respect for the marine environment.
If you prefer paddling to paddling out, kayaking tours offer a serene way to encounter the islands’ wild side. Glide through the mangrove lagoons of Beef Island or Trellis Bay, where herons stalk the shallows and juvenile reef fish dart amongst the roots. Guided tours led by local naturalists from Hike BVI or Groundsea Adventures highlight the ecological importance of these habitats. Sunset paddles are particularly magical — when the sky blazes pink and the mangroves glow in the fading light.
Community and Conservation
Grassroots organisations ensure that sustainability reaches every corner of island life. The Association of Reef Keepers (ARK) leads coral-nursery programmes where visitors can volunteer to ‘plant’ coral fragments and monitor reef recovery. Meanwhile, Green VI, a Tortola-based non-profit, champions recycling, waste reduction and renewable energy — turning discarded glass bottles into stunning seacoloured tiles and tableware.
Visitors can join guided eco-tours to see these initiatives in action, whether it’s helping clean a hidden beach, learning about mangrove restoration or assisting with sea turtle tagging. These experiences offer more than photo opportunities — they build connections between travellers and the people who call the BVI home.
THIS PAGE FROM TOP Trails that reconnect with nature. A sea turtle conservation moment. OPPOSITE Delicious farmto-table produce. Anegada Beach Club’s Beach Palapas.
From Farm to Fork
That same spirit of sustainability extends from the reef to the dinner table. Across the islands, a growing farmto-table movement is reconnecting residents and visitors with the land. On Tortola, small organic farms are cultivating everything from callaloo and breadfruit to passionfruit and fresh herbs, while local chefs craft vibrant menus celebrating what’s in season.
Restaurants such as Brandywine, CocoMaya and D’Coal Pot highlight island-grown produce, linecaught fish and honey from local beekeepers. Good Moon Farm invites guests to tour their terraced farm and learn about sustainable agriculture in a Caribbean climate. The result is cuisine that tells a story — one of resilience, renewal and respect for the islands’ natural abundance.

Anegada: The Untamed Frontier
For those seeking the BVI’s wilder side, Anegada beckons. Unlike its mountainous neighbours, this coral island is flat and ringed by the Horseshoe Reef — one of the largest barrier reefs in the Caribbean. Its isolation has preserved an ecosystem teeming with wildlife, including the rare Anegada Rock Iguana, as well as turtles, flamingos and other myriad birdlife.
Eco-friendly Anegada Beach Club utilises solar energy, promotes waste reduction and supports local conservation efforts. Guests are invited to reserve their beachfront palapa tents, cooled by ocean breezes and explore the island by electric scooter or bicycle. The local community promotes slow travel — encouraging visitors to linger, learn and leave nothing but footprints.
The Future of Travel in the BVI
As global travellers seek destinations that align with their values, the British Virgin Islands are charting a course toward a greener future. The government’s Climate Change Trust Fund and the Blue Economy Strategy are paving the way for renewable energy, marine conservation and eco-certified tourism operators.

BY ERIN PAVIOUR-SMITH
Jost Van Dyke, affectionately known as ‘JVD,’ may be the smallest of the four main British Virgin Islands, but it has always punched far above its weight. Barely three square miles of hills, coves and white-sand perfection, it is an island where stories swirl like the trade winds—of ancient plantations and tight-knit villages, of iconic beach bars, world-famous cocktails and unforgettable characters. Remarkably, it is also the birthplace of

the man who designed the United States Capitol Building.
With its easy-going Caribbean charm, Jost Van Dyke continues to inspire every soul who steps ashore. Whether you arrive by ferry, dinghy or yacht, the island invites you to slow down, sip deeply and discover the layers that make it one of the Caribbean’s most captivating places.
THIS SPREAD Jost Van Dyke’s White Bay, seen from shore, where turquoise waters welcome sailors.

Bubbly Pool: A Natural Spa
Adventure seekers will find one of the island’s best hidden gems to the east: the Bubbly Pool. This natural rock basin fills with frothy seawater pushed through a narrow passage, creating an effervescent, jacuzzi-like effect. It’s playful, refreshing and unforgettable—especially when waves roll in and the entire pool erupts in bubbles.
Arrive by boat, enjoy lunch at Foxy’s Taboo and then take the short scenic hike, where scrubland opens to sweeping views of the Atlantic. Rugged, wild and wonderfully unspoilt, the journey is part of the experience, offering a glimpse of JVD’s untouched natural beauty.
Diamond Cay, Little Jost
Van Dyke and the OuterIsland Jewel
For a quieter, more contemplative experience, head towards Diamond Cay, a protected marine and bird sanctuary where seabirds nest on rocky outcrops and the water is impossibly clear.
Just beyond lies Little Jost Van Dyke, birthplace of physician and abolition-era figure Dr John C. Lettsome, founder of the Medical Society of London.
His life, shaped in part by the island’s Quaker heritage, adds historical richness to this serene landscape. Today, Little Jost offers pristine beaches, rustic trails and a deep sense of solitude.

And off its eastern tip rests Sandy Spit, the tiny, circular islet that looks lifted from a postcard—just a ribbon of sand and a few hardy palms. A favourite stop for boaters and watersports enthusiasts, it embodies pure island freedom. You can stroll around it in minutes before diving into clear waters that feel far removed from the modern world.
A short hop south brings you to Sandy Cay, another jewel of the JVD seascape. Once owned by philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller, who preserved it as a natural haven, this uninhabited island is wrapped in white sand and dotted with sea grape and palm. A well-maintained trail loops through its interior, revealing a protected coastal ecosystem and offering one of the most photogenic vistas in the BVI.

Great Harbour:
The Island , s Beating Heart
By day, Great Harbour is a mellow waterfront filled with charm—small shops, local eateries such as Tipsy Shark, fishermen tending their boats and neighbours greeting each other with warm familiarity. By night, particularly on holidays, it transforms.
The harbour is home to the legendary Foxy’s Tamarind Bar, founded in 1968 by Philicianno ‘Foxy’ Callwood. With quick wit, scratch-band music and the easy hospitality that made him famous worldwide, Foxy helped put JVD on the global map. His New Year’s Eve parties have long been hailed as among the world’s best, drawing revellers from across the globe.

Foxy is a BVI icon—storyteller, conservationist and cultural guardian. His bar captures the creative, communal spirit of JVD, where strangers become friends and friends become lifelong devotees.

White Bay: Postcard- Perfect Paradise
Few beaches carry the mythic glow of White Bay. With water so clear it seems lit from below and a shoreline brushed with powder-soft sand, it draws beach lovers and sailors from all over the world. Hours drift by effortlessly here beneath the palms, where laid-back charm rules the day.
Along the shoreline, bars, eateries and boutique accommodations blend seamlessly into the scenery. Top-notch restaurant and bar, Hendo’s Hideout and its sister property, The Hideout Luxury Boutique Resort, offer elegant Balinese-inspired villas for those seeking an elevated island stay.
The Soggy Dollar Bar, named for guests who once swam ashore with wet cash—is credited with inventing the Painkiller cocktail, now a Caribbean classic blending rum, pineapple, orange and nutmeg. Its adjoining Sandcastle Hotel gives guests a chance to wake up footsteps from the sea.

William Thornton: The US Capitol , s BVI-Born Architect
Perhaps the most extraordinary historical figure connected to JVD is Dr William Thornton, born on the island in 1759. A doctor, inventor and visionary thinker, he won the 1793 competition to design the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. His neoclassical design laid the foundation for one of the world’s most recognisable structures.
That a man born on a quiet Caribbean island shaped the seat of American democracy is a story worthy of celebration. Thornton’s journey from JVD to the early United States highlights the brilliance that can emerge from unexpected places.

A Small Island With a Big Soul
What makes Jost Van Dyke truly special is the harmony of all its elements: its world-famous beaches, compelling personalities, natural wonders, deep-rooted history and enduring sense of community. It is an island where past and present intertwine, where every visitor finds something to hold on to—whether a cocktail recipe, a hiking trail, a sunset memory or a story that lingers long after the journey home.

4 teaspoons fresh ginger; finely grated
2 tablespoons coconut sugar; or brown sugar
4 tablespoons lime juice
2 tablespoons olive oil; divided 2 pounds large raw prawns; or shrimp, peeled and de-veined, tails on

2 cups papaya; peeled and cut into bite-size pieces freshly ground black pepper; to taste
2 green onions; thinly sliced
