The copy deadline for the April issue is March 17th.

Inour “In the News” section we explain how atrocious weather has affected all parts of Andalucía, but less so in our province. The level and capacity of reservoirs have gone up substantially which is good news for agriculturalists in the Cuevas del Almanzora region, who will now receive water from a large reservoir in Granada.
Doctors have been on strike in February asking for various improvements and if these are not forthcoming, they plan to strike for a week every month including June. We comment on this in our “In the News” section with the relevant dates. Organ transplants in Spain lead the world for the 34th consecutive year and we explain how it works. In an article, we detail how the new scheme of subsidies for all-electric and hybrid cars is being put in place. In others we explain how Spain intends to legalise immigrant workers, and we report on the Córdoba train disaster. The new requirement that e-scooters have to be registered with the ‘DGT’ (Spain’s Traffic Department), together with compulsory thirdparty insurance is now in force and we comment on this as well.
Town halls and concert venues are now getting back into full swing, and we list ones that may be of interest to our readers in our “What’s On” section. Easter dates change every year and Semana Santa (Holy Week) starts on March 29th. This year, the UK’s Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday, is on April 2nd. This is a fiesta day in Andalucía, so town halls, banks and many offices will be shut. This is not a fiesta date in the rest of Spain because Andalucía swapped this day for “Dia de San José” (Spanish Father’s Day) on March 19th. Easter Sunday is April 5th. The UK “Mothering Sunday”, the 4th Sunday in Lent is on March 15th but Spanish Mother’s Day is always the first Sunday in May. St. Patrick’s Day this year is Tuesday, March 17th.
On the Thursday that is three Thursdays before Maundy Thursday, so March 12th this year, a
very strange event takes place around Mojácar and in Cuevas de Almanzora, that may have started in the 17th century. It also takes place in some parts of Málaga, Catalonia and France. This is “Dia de la Vieja” (Old Lady Day) and effigies of an old lady made of brightly covered tissue paper wrapped round a cross are taken into the countryside, or in some places near a beach. The head is filled with sweets and with the cross planted in the ground, children throw stones at the head to get at the sweets, although in Cuevas del Almanzora the children use sticks. The origins of this are not entirely clear, but one explanation is that grannies took their grandchildren into the countryside for a picnic, as a moment of light relief during the solemn period of Lent with no festivities. Local businesses will be shut in the afternoon and evening and the time in the countryside is often marked by barbecues, drinks and a family get together.

The clocks “Spring forward” on the last Sunday in March which is March 29th. There are no national fiestas during April but Friday, May 1st is a fiesta to celebrate the “Day of the Worker”.
Editor’s Note. We are delighted to announce that this March issue of the ‘Focus’ magazine is number 202 and completes 20 years since the first one in April 2006. We owe a huge “thank you” to all our advertisers, along with all our readers who pick up the 5,000 copies every month.

There were some storms in Spain that were given names during November and December, but so far this year there have been as many as 10. Some of them followed on, but others overlapped. There have been areas where there were high winds and rain day after day with major damage and flooding. Between January 1st and February 10th average rainfall in Spain was 208 litres per m2, so 20.8cms (8 inches) when the normal rainfall is 81 litres per m2. Between December 29th and February 16th the water in reservoirs went up 46.5%, from 31,546hm3 to 46,229hm3 that in some cases was 82% capacity, but last year on February 16th the total capacity was only 58%. (1hm3 is 1 million cubic metres and 1 cubic metre is 1,000 litres). This total capacity is the highest since records were kept from 1988. Andalucía has been one of the worst hit but fortunately, Almería province has not experienced the most severe problems. Of the 12,400 people evacuated in Spain, 11,000 were in Andalucía and the entire 1,600 residents of one town spent 11 days in a sports centre. Central government and the Junta de Andalucía have both announced major grants and Junma Moreno, the President of the Junta, is earmarking 988 million euros for agricultural damage and 535 million for roads, which are direct grants, not loans. Surplus money from 2024 and 2025 will be used and the 2026 budget will be increased. Out of the 988 million euros, 33,000 agriculturalists will receive 700 million euros. Other money is for livestock and the fishing industry which were confined to ports because of high seas. There are 594 roads affected that total 1,000km with the most damage in Cádiz and Málaga. 50 million euros will go to municipalities to be spent on the repair of public services, water supplies and restore electrical infrastructure. Selfemployed people and small companies with major damage to buildings and equipment can claim 200 euros a month for 10 months for individuals, and small companies can claim 350 euros per employee over the same time period. Juanma Moreno asked for “patience and trust” guaranteeing that the Junta will act as fast as possible. Central government is giving grants of up to 60,500 euros for homes that have been destroyed, up to 20,600
euros when the structure is not affected, and up to 10,300 euros for damage to household goods.
On Friday, February 2nd, the Andalucía Health Authority ruled that masks had to be used from midnight at hospitals and residential homes until May 18th. This date is “the end date of the twentieth epidemiological week of 2026, without prejudice to the fact that a new order may be issued within this period, leaving this one without effect, in accordance with the evolution of the situation”. The rate of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) has seen a steep rise in the region, and in Almería province at the end of January it went to 335.2 cases per 100,000 head of population. Also “the mask becomes recommended for professionals, patients and users of health and social health centres when the General Directorate of Public Health and Pharmaceutical Regulation declares that the normal baseline level has gone up to a low epidemic level. This will also apply to medical centres when the centre is located in an area with twice the baseline incidence rate of acute respiratory infections. As regards vaccinations up to the end of January, Andalucía had 1,925,236 people immunised against the flu, (above the historical record) with 155,283 vaccinated in our province. In addition, 775,558 were immunised against covid, 54,861 people in our province, and 45,639 babies were immunised against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the main cause of bronchiolitis.
On Monday, February 16th , some doctors in Spain started a strike until the 20th. They plan other strikes on March 16th-20th, April 27th-30th, May 18th-22nd and June 15th-19th. There was accident and emergency department cover, and 100% cover in dialysis and predetermined cancer treatments. A strike on January 14th was extremely patchy and in some areas there was no noticeable difference, as strikes are voluntary. In some health centres, appointments were not possible, with cancellations in hospitals. The Department of Health in Andalucía claims that less than 20% of doctors went on strike on January 14th. Monica García, the National

Minister for Health, signed an agreement with the largest four unions on January 28th, but a fifth union called for the strike, as they do not have enough members to be included in collective bargaining. The ones on strike want better conditions, and the 24hr on-call shifts reduced to 17hrs and become voluntary. At present, up to the age of 55 they are compulsory. Extra shifts do not count towards the amount of a pension as the pension contributions are based on days worked, not hours, and the doctors complain that this is unfair. The Minister for Health has stated that part of the negotiations should be the responsibility of the autonomous communities, in our case the Health Service in Andalucía, who fix salaries and some conditions that are not done nationally.
On Monday, February 16th, Juanma Moreno, the President of the Junta de Andalucía, visited the Torrecárdenas Hospital in Almería city. His good news was that work on the multi-storey car park will start this month and will cost about 25 million euros. The bad news is that it will not be completed until the second half of 2027. At present, parking near to the hospital is almost impossible. The car park will have 6 floors for more than 2,000 vehicles, between 340 and 329 per floor for visitors and staff, with 54 spaces for people with reduced mobility. There will be a café / restaurant of 1,000m2 and on the same floor a children’s playroom, terrace and toilets. The construction company New Capital 2000 SL will run the car park and collect parking fees for 40 years.
At the end of January, it was agreed between the Ministry of Labour and the ‘Hacienda’ (Tax Office) that the minimum wage for 2026 would go up by 3.1% to 17,094 euros gross per annum, paid in 14 instalments. (Most employers divide the total by 12 to give a monthly wage). There has been heated discussions in 2025 and this year because the Hacienda wanted the rise to be taxed as they considered it was more than a living wage. Up to 2024 the Hacienda increased the tax threshold to be the same as the minimum wage so no tax was due. In 2025, for a single person with only
their age allowance, the tax due could be up to 340 euros, but the Hacienda agreed that if any tax was due, they would refund it when ‘La Renta’ tax return for 2025 has to be completed this June. The tax this year could amount to just under 600 euros and they have agreed to refund this as well. They don’t want to put the tax threshold up as this would mean that the other tax bands would have to go up as well and the total taxes they received would be much less. They point out that it is only a single person who will be taxed and anyone with other allowances, apart from the age allowance, will usually not have to pay anything. If a person on the minimum wage is taxed this year, it will be refunded in the 2027 tax return and the minimum wage will be backdated from January 1st.
The Latin words “de minimus” best translates as being “minimal things”. This applies to small items imported into a country free of any import tax. In the US this applies to goods up to a value of 800 dollars (728 euros). Donald Trump levied a 30% import tax on these on May 2nd and an estimate was that goods from China into the US amounted to 4 million dollars every day, sent there by international postal services or couriers, free of tax. In the UK, the limit before import duties is 135 pounds sterling that is currently under review. On Thursday, February 12th, the EU Commission approved an import tax of a flat rate of 3 euros per item coming into the EU from outside. This applies to items with a maximum value of 150 euros, which is tax free at present, and it will come into force from July 1st. Figures from 2025 have not been published but in 2024 it is stated that items worth 4.6 billion euros came into the EU, 91% from Chinese e-commerce companies including Temu, Shein and Aliexpress. The flat rate will put up the cost of low value items considerably, but not expensive ones. It appears that if a package has more than one item, each of them will be subject to the surcharge, but a pack of identical items will be counted as a single one. This will apply to goods from the UK, but buying goods from the UK at present means that they are subject to an import tax following Brexit. The EU propose to totally reform import taxes

according to the existing tariffs from 2028, so the 3 euros tax would seem to be in force until then.
As opposed to any other province in Andalucía, Almería saw a slight drop in tourists last year with 28,000 (about 1%) less than in 2024. A total of 2,697,421 people visited our province during 2025, compared to 2024 which was 2,725,309. However, during January, passengers arriving at the airport totalled 35,378, an increase of 11.7% compared to January 2025. Some 29,264 arrived from within Spain, up 5.2%, and 6,002 from outside Spain, up 69.2%. Brits accounted for 5,670 passengers thanks to the two winter season routes from Bristol and Liverpool. In 2025 the average daily ,expenditure went up significantly from 68,60 euros in 2024 to 74,30 an increase of 8.3% that was only slightly less than Málaga. In 2024 tourists stayed an average of 5.7 days (with a drop of 4.3% compared to 2023) but in 2025 the trend was reversed with an increase of 4.1%, reaching an average of 6.0 days. Where Almeria fares worst is the rating of the stay made by tourists, which stands at 8.8 out of 10, a high score, but in last place together with Huelva. This is put down to very poor rail access that will hopefully be solved when the ‘AVE’ (High speed train) arrives in Almería, probably in 2028, and many major projects involving work on roads. As regards cruise ships docking in Almería port, there were very positive results. In total, 32 dockings were made during 2025, exceeding the previous year’s figure by 12 with 22,000 cruise passengers compared to the 13,600 in 2024. A large number opt for exploring Almería city or taking guided tours including those that come to Mojácar. This year, Pérez de la Blanca, in charge of the port, has announced that so far, 29 dockings are confirmed with several others expected to choose Almería in their planned stopovers, which is currently being discussed with the cruise ship companies. In 2007, the “Cruise Excellence Awards” ceremony will be held in Almería which attracts 200 professionals from various sectors. In Andalucía as a whole there were a total of 37.9 million tourists in 2025, 5.2% more than the previous year, but the most significant growth was in the sector’s ability to
generate wealth and job opportunities. Tourism revenues in Andalucía slightly exceeded 30 billion euros of total economic impact for the first time. In terms of employment, 2025 set a new all-time high with an average of 482,000 people employed in the tourism sector, and a peak of 531,000 jobs in the third quarter of July to September, which exceeded half a million workers for the first time. Year-on-year growth was 10.1%, one of the highest percentages in Spain, and tourism generated 43% of all employment in Andalucía during the year, so a very substantial part of the economy.
The so-called “reinforced operation” that ‘Red Eléctrica de España’ (REE), The Spanish National Grid operator has been applying after the blackout suffered by Spain and Portugal on April 28th, has cost an extra 1.1 billion euros up to January 31st. Consumers have paid this on their electricity bills, up by 19%. The reinforced operation is “a more intensive use of programming due to technical restrictions”, using co-generation gas-fired power stations, that are much more expensive than electricity from renewable energy sources of solar and wind farms. In 2025, gas-fired electricity production reached 38.800 GWh compared to 29,100 GWh in 2024. REE justifies its action on the basis of European Regulations taking into account “the circumstances detected in the April 28th incident with forced oscillations, breaches of the voltage control service and undue disconnections in the distribution network”. However, REE has been strongly criticised for taking panic measures that made the problem far worse and caused the blackout. When electricity is produced it has to be “exactly” 50 cycles per second or 50Hz. Oscillations have to be corrected immediately and electricity from solar farms is the most difficult to control. On April 28th at midday, REE was obtaining 59% of electricity from solar, 11% from wind, 10% from dams, 11% from nuclear power stations but only 3.8% from gas-fired power stations. At 12.19pm the substation in Málaga with a lot of solar power blipped at 50.1Hz and this caused the Granada substation to go off line. A cascade event followed immediately in Badajoz on the Portuguese border

and Seville until the whole supply system crashed. The solution for solar power and to a lesser extent wind farms, is that the power is stored in batteries. This allows for a much greater control and also helps the companies who run them. With stored electricity they can supply it at night, when there is no sunlight or when there is no wind. The cost of batteries (mostly from China manufacturers) has come down significantly. New projects for solar farms in Spain have batteries as a standard item.
In an article we explain how a major investigation is carried out when there is a disaster, such as the train crash near Córdoba on Sunday, January 18th, with 47 deaths. Marks and abrasions were found on the bogies of carriages 1-5 of the ‘Iryo’ train that went over the lefthand side of the rails, and carriages 6, 7 and 8 derailed at 7.43pm. The second train coming in the opposite direction hit it nine seconds later and then it derailed. Trains that had gone over this section of the track at 5.40pm, 6.01pm and 7.09pm had similar lesser marks on the same side of the bogies, but trains before 5.40pm didn’t. The initial conclusion was that a welded joint between two sections of the track had fractured just before the 5.40pm train but when the sixth carriage of the ‘Iryo’ train went over it, a 36cm section of the track broke off. Major work on the track had been completed in May last year and special “test” trains are continually in use mostly during the night, as hardly any trains, including the ‘AVE’ (high speed trains) operate at night. All highspeed rail tracks in Spain come from the ‘ArcelorMittal’ company in Barcelona that supplies rail tracks to many countries with rigorous quality checks. Comprehensive records show the people who make the welds on each section, and the rails have the manufacture date and batch number. Where the fracture occurred was at the joint between a rail fabricated in 2023 that was one of new ones, but the adjoining existing rail was “probably” manufactured in 1989 for the opening of the ‘AVE’ line from Madrid to Seville in 1992. Laboratory testing in Madrid on a one metre section of both rails started on January 27th and the piece that broke off was at the end of a 2023 rail. Rail joints are made using
the thermite welding technique where a graphite mould is put alongside the two rails either side of the joint with a small gap and the rails are heated to between 800o and 1000o C. Molten metal at 2,500o from a chemical reaction between iron oxide and aluminium powder is poured into the joint that melts both of the ends of the rails and should form a perfect joint. This method is highly portable and quick, without the need for any electricity.

Following the publishing of a Royal Decree on January 28th , third party insurance for “personal mobility devices”, 99% of them being e-scooters with about 4 million users, became obligatory from Friday, January 30th. Owners, or the parents/ guardians of minors, have to register them with the DGT (Spain’s Traffic Authority) on their website with a digital certificate, or using the Cl@ve system or at a ‘Trafico’ office with one in Almería city, and a person can phone 060 to resolve any queries. A ‘gestor’ that deals with administrative legal proceedings will carry out the registration for a fee. There are two categories and the vast majority of them are ones with a speed of between 6km/h and 25km/h that weigh less than 25kgs. If the weight is more than 25kgs the maximum speed is 14km/h. From January 22nd , 2024, all new ones had to be to a certain technical standard with a certificate and identification number from the manufacturer that are needed for the registration. The fee is 8 euros 67 céntimos and the DGT will issue their own digital certificate. With this, centres that supply normal number plates will provide a small one that has to be put in a prominent position. If an e-scooter does not have the 2024 certificate because it is older, the owner has to

supply the details that they have, ideally an invoice for the purchase showing the model and type or a photograph. In this case, there will be a temporary certificate issued but they must still be insured. After January 22nd next year they will no longer be legal and cannot be used. The third-party insurance has to have a minimum of 6.45 million euros cover in the case of personal injury or death to a person or persons following an accident and 1.3 million for damage to vehicles or physical objects, and a typical cost is stated to be about 50 to 60 euros. There will be fine of 200 euros to 602 euros for not having insurance and from 250 to 800 euros for using one without insurance. At present there is no national obligation that users wear a helmet, as it depends on the municipality where they live. Last year, a plastic surgeon at the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city made a plea for all users to wear a helmet to avoid very serious injuries in an accident that in over 35% of cases needed plastic surgery for face injuries. A new byelaw in Almería city will make the wearing of a helmet compulsory and only children over 16 can use e-scooters. In our province last year, there were four fatalities of e-scooter users involved in accidents.
At the World Government Summit in Dubai at the beginning of February, Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, announced that Spain will ban social media platforms for children under the age of 16 and the platforms will be required to implement rigorous age verification systems. He stated that “Social media has become a failed entity where laws are ignored, and crimes are tolerated, and we will protect children from the digital Wild West.” The Prime Minister said that his government would also introduce a new bill to hold social media executives accountable. “This means that the CEOs of these technology platforms will face criminal liability if they do not remove hateful or illegal content.” All the proposals will have to be negotiated in Parliament to enable it to become law, but the PP political party in opposition are behind the proposal so it should be passed. The leader of the PP party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, stated that he presented the same proposal a few months ago in Madrid,
and Pedro Sánchez has merely copied it! The age limit is the most innovative of five actions listed, which range from the modification of algorithms to be a crime as well, and the traceability of the hatred that circulates on the network. He reminded the delegates that the Paris Prosecutor’s Office has searched the ‘X’ offices in France and will summon Elon Musk to testify in court, accused of the manipulation of algorithms. The small print of the proposals will be known in due course. The ban on networks for children under 16 years of age is in line with the guidelines set by the European Commission last summer which are already beginning to be applied by other EU countries. Portugal’s proposal, being debated in Parliament, contemplates two different scenarios. For children under 13 years of age, a total ban on access is proposed. For those between 13 and 16 years of age, the responsibility for access will be delegated to the parents. Austria, Denmark and France are also proposing a total ban based on age and Pedro Sánchez wants to work with these and other EU countries, to enact a similar unified ban.
An extremely unusual event world-wide, took place in Huéral-Overa recently. On Saturday, February 7th, Pope Leo XIV sent an Italian Cardinal to announce the beatification of the Roman Catholic priest, Salvador Valera Parra, so he will be declared to be a saint and will be known as “Santa Valera”. Born in 1861 he was the parish priest in dioceses in Murcia and Cartagena until 1868 when he became the parish priest in Huércal-Overa until he died in 1889. The Cardinal Marcello Semeraro is the head of the body at the Vatican that decides if a person is qualified to become a saint, which usually takes several years. He was accompanied by the Bishop of Almeria, the Bishop of Cartagena, the Archbishop of Granada and 120 priests from various dioceses. The Cardinal told the 5,000 people in the event centre that Father Parra had led a life “dedicated to so many people, especially visiting the sick, helping the weakest and assisting the elderly. This is, above all, the care of souls!” During his time as parish priest there were cholera epidemics, earthquakes and environmental disasters that are highlighted in

documents from this time period. To be considered to be a saint, the person has to be credited with performing at least one miracle that cannot be explained by normal means. Juan Sánchez-Esteban, a Roman Catholic doctor from Huércal-Overa who practices medicine at Rhode Island in the United States, had recorded that “In 2007, I had a very sick child who at birth barely had a pulse in his heart, without oxygen in his brain for a several minutes”. The doctor remembered the devotion that his parents transmitted to him for Father Valera and he prayed to him because he could not do any more as a doctor and “the miracle took place.” The baby recovered almost immediately and the young man recently turned 19, with no health problems at all. This miracle, along with the life of Valera Parra was submitted to the Vatican who carried out the lengthy investigation. He is also associated with extraordinary events, such as a large fire in the church, that was suddenly extinguished after his prayers to the Virgin Mary. The next stage will take place at St. Peter’s in Rome when the Pope will preside over a “canonisation” service declaring him to be a saint. The doctor, the parents and the young man were present at the ceremony in Huércal-Overa.
According to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics relating to our province, between January and November last year, 8,750 mortgages were signed for the purchase of houses. This compared to the 6,357 in the same period of 2024, an increase of almost 38%. Banks lent purchasers 962.97 million euros, 298.5 million euros more than in 2024, a growth of 45%. The real estate boom peaked in 2007, with 33,436 mortgages from January to November, before plummeting to 3,268 in 2014. Since then, the recovery has been gradual with 4,566 in 2018, 6,655 in 2021, 8,078 in 2022, but only 1,719 in 2023 (put down to high interest rates), 6,357 in 2024 and 8,750 last year. As regards Spain being a country for international real-estate investment, it did not appear in the top 10 until 2022 when it climbed to the 7th position. In 2024 it rose to 4th place and last year it was in 2nd place after the UK (traditionally a large European real estate market). This year Spain has overtaken
the UK and 50% of 698 large international investors such as insurance companies, venture capital ones, general funds and pension funds, choose Spain as their main investment destination.

Following the unrelenting severe rain in Cádiz, Málaga, Seville and Granada at the end of January and the start of February, the level of water in almost all the reservoirs in Andalucía went up substantially. In several cases, there was a controlled release of water as the capacity was at the “safe maximum level”. Agriculturalists in our Almanzora region have lacked water for irrigation for a number of years. The desalination plant at Palomares opened in 2011 and provided water, but it was wrecked in the 2012 floods and it is not intended to be in operation again until early 2027. The Negratín reservoir in Granada province is the fourth largest in Andalucía covering 2,170 hectares (8 square miles) and has an enormous pipeline that can bring water to the Cuevas reservoir for agriculture in the area, but it has not been possible since 2018. If it has 210 cubic hectometres (hm3) followed by normal rainfall, a maximum of 50hm3 can be sent here every year. On February 18th with a rise of 67hm3 in 14 days, it filled up to 304hm3 which is 53% of the total capacity of 571hm3, compared to 186hm3 on February 18th last year. Water will be made available almost immediately that will greatly help and has been greeted with delight. The Cuevas reservoir holds up to 161hm3

but it has been almost empty for years. Currently, with recent rainfall it holds 8hm3, only 5%. 1hm3 is 1 million m3 and 1 cubic metre is 1,000 litres.
Spain has been the country with the most organ donors of around 52 per million inhabitants for 34 consecutive years, but in the EU it is only 24 per million. Spain contributes 24% of the total number of donors in the EU and 5% globally, even though the country only represents 11% of the European population and 0.6% globally. In 2025 there were 6,335 transplants, very close to the 6,464 in 2024 that was the highest number ever. In the last decade, the figure has risen by more than 50%, according to data presented on February 13th by the Minister of Health, Mónica García, as February 14th is Organ Donor Day. She explained, “The figure reflects the system’s capacity to coordinate. Behind it there are professionals working with all the talent and knowledge available, working with families who at the worst moment of their lives say ‘yes’ and allow other people to continue living”. Strictly speaking, according to the letter of the law, transplants are obligatory but in practice it is completely voluntary. In 2025, kidney transplants were the most frequent ones with 3,999 followed by 1,276 liver transplants, 556 lung transplants and 390 heart transplants which was 12% more than in 2024. The fifth and sixth most common ones were pancreatic and intestinal transplants. In addition, much needed tissues such as bones, corneas and heart valves can also be obtained from a donation. In Spain, only people who die in hospital are eligible to be donors, and specialists in organ donation will talk to the relatives. In 2025, a total of 78% of family members agreed to organs being donated. On February 13th, the ‘Doce de Octubre’ hospital in Madrid announced that medical teams had carried out 4 heart transplants at short notice during 63 hours spread over 3 days. A spokesperson from the Cardiovascular Unit stated that “Two patients had been receiving treatment for some time but had deteriorated, two of them were dependent on heart machines in the coronary unit to keep them alive until they received a donor heart, and one of them received a heart for the second time,
following a transplant in 2017”. María Orejana, a nurse in the transplant coordination unit at the hospital explained, “They were days of great tension and stress, because heart transplantation is even more time-dependent than others.” Two of the donated hearts arrived by helicopter from other hospitals, one of which was 200km away. At airports like the one in Almería volunteers will organise an urgent flight overnight, if necessary, when the airport is shut. The National Transplant Organisation in Madrid is manned 24/7 and they have a list of all persons who need a transplant and what organs become available. People who are imminently liable to die are top of the list. Anyone can obtain the equivalent of a donor card in Spain from the website of the National Transplant Organisation, but it is not legally valid unless relatives agree. It is highly recommended that people who wish to be donors should talk with their families beforehand. In England a new “opt out” system came into effect on May 20th, 2020, after the “Organ Donation (Deemed Consent) Bill” received Royal Assent. This was because organ donors were far less than the demand, resulting in a large number of deaths. All adults in England are now considered to have agreed to be an organ donor when they die, unless they have made a decision not to donate that is put on the NHS Organ Donor Register.
‘Ryanair’ is continually sniping at ‘Aena’, the Spanish Air Authority, claiming that airport taxes are too high, but ‘Aena’ dispute this. As regards Almería airport, Ryanair are starting flights from March 29th to London-Stansted until October 22nd on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays, and Manchester flights are on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. There are flights to Brussels-Charleroi on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Jet2 have more than 42,000 seats (Up 11%) from April to November with flights to London-Stansted, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham. The TUI company have flights to Poland, Hungary and Luxemburg, and Binter will resume flights to Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands twice a week from March 31st. They have free connecting flights to other airports in the islands.

The foundations of the leaning tower of Pisa were laid on August 9th, 1173, but it started to tilt almost immediately because of uneven foundations in the soft ground. In order to compensate for this, new floors were built with one side taller than the other. Designed to be a bell tower, seven giant bells were eventually installed but were stopped being rung in case they affected the tilt. By 1990, it was 5.5 degrees and various methods were used to try to stabilise it including the installation of counterweights. Finally, in 2008, after major structural modifications it was announced that the tilt had been stopped and the tower was stable.
In 2006, Joya Williams a woman who worked for Cola-Cola tried to sell the secret ingredients, composition and manufacturing process of CocaCola to Pepsi for 1.5 million dollars. Instead of accepting the offer, Pepsi notified Coca-Cola that this had taken place. Coca-Cola informed the FBI and an investigation led to Joya Williams, who was considered to be a model employee, being identified as being behind the offer, along with an accomplice, and they were both arrested. They charged them with stealing trade secrets and wire fraud. Joya was sentenced to 8 years in prison and her accomplice was sentenced to 5 years.
You might think that your nostrils share the workload when it comes to taking in oxygen. And while they do, it’s not quite in the way that you might expect. Instead of both taking in the same amount of air when you breathe, you actually inhale most of your oxygen through just one nostril at a time. Every few hours, the active nostril will take a break and the other one will take over until they ultimately switch back again. Each external nostril contains approximately 1,000 strands of nasal hair that function to filter foreign particles such as pollen and dust. The nostrils warm air on inhalation and remove moisture on exhalation.

As Buddhism spread across Asia, artists began creating human representations of the Buddha, with the most common being the seated Buddha. This seated form typically portrays the Buddha in a meditative posture, often in the lotus position, signifying spiritual discipline, inner peace, and the path to enlightenment. It reflects the idea of achieving spiritual purity despite the distractions and challenges of worldly life. The lotus flower beneath the Buddha in this posture symbolises purity. However, the real Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, was actually incredibly skinny because of self-deprivation and consistent fasting.
False teeth or dentures are first recorded around 700 BC. Etruscan artisans crafted replacement teeth from carved animal teeth or human teeth, commonly made from the teeth of dead soldiers, securing them into the mouth using thin bands of pure gold. By 1500 false teeth were carved out of bone, and wooden dentures were used in Japan from 1583. French pharmacist Alexis Duchâteau first proposed using porcelain for dentures in 1744, recognizing its durability. Implants offer a fixed, permanent solution by surgically fusing a titanium post to the jawbone, representing the modern standard for replacing individual teeth.
The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, are American aviation pioneers credited with inventing, building, and flying the world’s first successful airplane. They made the first controlled, sustained flight of an engine-powered, heavier-than-air aircraft called the ‘Wright Flyer’ on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills in North Carolina. It lasted for 12 seconds and covered 120ft (36m). The brothers gained their mechanical skills by working for years in their Dayton, Ohio workshop with printing presses, bicycles and motors. Their shop mechanic, Charles Taylor, became an important part of the team, building their first airplane engine.
For some time now, as opposed to many other countries who consider that migrants are a big problem, Spain has recognised that migrant workers are necessary in various employment sectors and should be encouraged to become fully legal.
The present PSOE party (roughly a labour party) in government in Spain, is led by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, but they do not have a majority in Parliament and have to rely on obtaining the support of other parties to pass legislation. Many organisations in Spain have been campaigning for legislation to address the illegal migrant problem and at the end of January the Podemos party (a middle of the road party) joined the PSOE party to pass major changes.
The aim is to legalise the vast majority of migrant workers that could be as many as 500,000. It will apply to the illegal ones who were here on December 31st last year and the new legislation will be introduced from June 1st, so these people will have been here for a minimum of five months, although many migrants have been here far longer, in some cases years. By making these people legal they have many benefits personally, but calculations are that the public coffers would see an income of between 3,300 and 4,000 euros per person as by becoming legal, they would pay into the Social Security System and be liable for income tax.
Migrants, whether or not they are claiming asylum, can start their applications from April with the aim that approval, or non-approval will only take three months. To prove residency in Spain a person needs documentation such as being on the ‘padrón’ (the official list of inhabitants in every municipality), having made applications for aid from social services, a rental contract, proof (if this applies) of money transfers or regular use of public transport. This implies that the person has probably been working in the black economy.
People with a criminal record will be excluded straight away, but for other applicants any deportation orders for administrative reasons or
for working without a permit will be suspended. Once the application is accepted, a provisional residence permit for 12 months will be granted allowing the individual to work legally and access other fundamental rights such as healthcare. After this period the person can apply for a normal residence permit.

In 2025 non-Spanish workers in Spain totalled 3.58 million, some 16% and if people with dual nationality (mostly from Latin America) are included it comes to 21%. The Social Security Department state that of the foreign workers paying in as being legal, 373,400 were from Morocco, 336,500 from Romania, 250,200 from Columbia, 215,700 from Venezuela, 987,000 from the EU, 257,000 from the rest of Europe and 851,000 from the rest of the world. However, if a person has two jobs they are included in the total twice. 42% of those registered are in the special domestic employment scheme and 37% in the special agricultural scheme. 20% of people from Columbia work in the hospitality sector that often has low wages and long hours, and 24% of people from Venezuela are waiters or cooks along with 23% from Argentina.
The processing of the applications will be done at the “Foreigners Offices” and in Almería city it is working at full capacity. The estimated numbers of migrants who will apply is put at 20,000 to 30,000. A spokesperson for the National Police who run the foreigner’s office stated that they were not opposed to the new law but its implementation will be a major problem.

On January 18th at 7.43pm, two trains collided near Adamuz in Córdoba province and the final death toll was 47. Two carriages at the rear of the first train derailed, jack-knifed across the other line, and the second train collided with it nine seconds later.
In the event of a disaster of this magnitude there is a very clear protocol that is immediately activated. The Guardia Civil Police take control and they have to notify a judge, in this case at the nearby town of Montoro. Unusually, the judge on duty was a temporary substitute until the new judge, Cristina Pastor, took over on February 8th, and she had only recently graduated from the Judicial School. Because of this, the President of the Provincial Court of Córdoba co-ordinated the response. He is also the delegate judge of the Judicial Network of Experts in Emergency and Disaster Management, a network of 39 judges throughout Spain created in 2023. The appointed judge is in charge of the whole inquiry and dictates and approves what happens, such as the removal of bodies, autopsies and the removal of physical components from the accident site.
Forensic pathologists and technicians from Jaén, Granada, Seville, and Málaga were mobilised to start work in Córdoba, and a Data Integration Centre became operative. Guardia Civil police set up areas in Madrid, Córdoba, Huelva, Seville and Málaga where relatives of missing family members provided DNA samples, photographs and any distinguishing features. All these were flown to Madrid, along with DNA from all the fatalities and 50% were identified from fingerprints. When identification was confirmed, the judge authorised relatives to contact funeral homes.
At the site, Guardia Civil Police inspected the whole crash area and their forensic teams took 2,500 photos, along with videos and samples which were sent to the main criminology and forensic centre in Madrid. Other officers took witness statements from train crew and passengers and altogether 950 police from various departments were involved.
All the information was shared with the Railway Accident Investigation Commission (CIAF), an independent body within the Ministry of Transport. Three of its members are engineers specialising in railway infrastructure, rolling stock, signalling, safety systems and communications. The fourth member must have proven experience in railway safety and operations, and each member serves on the committee for six years. They take charge of physical items such as the two black boxes, the train carriages and sections of the track. They worked at the crash site alongside the Guardia Civil Police and decided what they wanted sent to Madrid. These were authorised by the judge to go to the main ‘Renfe’ (rail company) workshops where laboratory testing can analyse them in detail.

At a press conference, their President Ignacio Barrón explained, “What causes a derailment is the interaction between the track and the train that rules out human error, operational issues, signalling or electrification problems”. He stated that they would focus on three scenarios. “A track failure, a train malfunction, or a case of interaction.” The latter refers to “the rolling stock being affected by a minor infrastructure defect that triggers an overreaction.” Part of the track and infrastructure was replaced in May 2025 and detailed inspections using special trains were made during October, November and December.
Initial conclusions pointed to a fracture of a welded joint between a new and existing section of the track where a 36cm part of the new track broke off when the sixth carriage went over it. Passengers in the middle of the train reported experiencing severe vibrations.

Anew car subsidy scheme will be back dated to January 1st when it becomes law. This new ‘Auto+Program’, with a budget of 400 million euros, has important changes to previous schemes and it only applies to electric and hybrid cars made or assembled in Spain or Europe.
The previous maximum of 7,000 euros for purely electric cars applied when a car over 7 years old was scrapped, but this no longer applies. The new subsidy is only 4,500 euros and to get 100% of the 4,500 euros grant a car must be purely electric for the first 50% (but only 25% for hybrid ones). For another 25% the total purchase price has to be a maximum of 35,000 euros plus IVA. For cars costing more than 35,000 euros up to 45,000 euros plus IVA the discount is only 15%. The remaining 25% is 15% for a car assembled by a Spanish or European manufacturer and the other 10% if the battery pack comes from Europe. For vans or light trucks with a weight not greater than 3.5 tonnes, the subsidy is up to 5,000 euros with no upper limit on the price. Electric motorbikes, subject to some conditions, can have a subsidy of up to 1,000 euros if the price is no more than 10,000 euros.
A few days later another scheme was announced for self-employed people and companies with less than 10 employees. These are up to 7,500 euros, whether or not vehicles are purchases, long-term rentals or leased. It is accepted that many individuals and companies don’t want to allocate money for an outright purchase. There was no small print, but conditions are assumed to be similar.
A major change is that dealers apply for the grants which will be paid withing two months from a central body, but there is no national subsidy any more for installing a charging point. Autonomous communities (in our case Andalucía) will have to introduce their own subsidies. The existing 15% relief on personal income tax for electric vehicles within the price bands will still apply.
The aim is to raise the economy of the motor sector from the current 85 billion to 120 billion euros, maintain the 1.9 million jobs linked to the automotive industry in Spain and increase national production to 2.7 million vehicles, which have to be fully electric by 2035. According to figures released by ‘Anfac’ (the Spanish Association of Vehicle Manufacturers), 6,472 electric vehicles were registered this January, 29.1% more than January 2025. In the case of plug-in hybrids, sales reached 8,740 units, an increase of 66.7% and the total market share of both vehicle types was 20.8%.

The ‘OCU’ Association of Consumers and Users has criticised the removal of the requirement that a car aged over seven years has to be scrapped because the average age of cars in Spain is about 15 and it took older vehicles out of circulation. They also criticise the amount of 400 million euros that they say will only last for a few months. There have been many calls for the 21% IVA (VAT) to be reduced or scrapped, as in Portugal, but this has not been done.
Various Chinese car manufacturers selling cars in Spain have pointed out that the 25% discount for a car and battery from Europe is 1,125 euros. MG, Omoda / Jaecoo, BYD, Leapmotor and Dacia (Spring) have announced that the 1,250 euros will be taken off their selling price, so purchasers can receive the whole 4,500 euros grant. This entirely defeats one of the purposes of the new ‘Auto+Program’ schemes!

Time for a monthly “pup-date” and what a great way to start the year, having found loving homes for 14 dogs during January. Thank you to all the families that have given these previous members of PAWS-PATAS family their new beginnings
Wednesday 28th January marked an important milestone for us when we officially signed the Escritura for the land adjacent to the PAWS-PATAS Shelter. This is the first rung on the ladder towards realising our long-held dream of creating a modern, purpose built facility, allowing us to care for animals to the very highest possible standards
The good news keeps coming. Our event on Friday 30th January raised 310.41 euros. Thank you to the stallholders, everyone who came along to enjoy the music and to Delfos del Faz for such a great venue for this type of event. Our monthly Book Sale raised 291.40 euros during January and 615 euros was received from our PAWS-SOME members.
More thank you’s to:

20th – Be in with a chance of winning a weekend for 2 in Almeria at our special Mr & Mrs Competition hosted by the fabulous Kay Frances, celebrating International Day of Happiness. Come and find out how much you truly know about your loved one.
Looking further ahead, 4th April is the multicharity Alternative Miss Mojácar competition, a time for men to dig out heels and lippie to be in with a chance of winning 100 euros.

At the end of January Los Bandidos enjoyed a packed weekend of competition, with members racing on the road, in the mountains and at one of Spain’s biggest half marathons.
Espartanos de El Alquián
Nine Bandidos took part in the XV Carrera Popular “Espartanos de El Alquián”, with three runners contesting the 5k and six tackling the 10k. Despite bright sunshine, strong winds made conditions challenging and many runners commented on how tough the course felt in the blustery weather.
The team celebrated two age-group podium finishes, with Nigel Smith and Jackie Darcy both claiming welldeserved places on the podium. All runners were rewarded at the finish with a generous goody bag including drinks, snacks and a box of fresh tomatoes, peppers and courgettes.

Founded in June 2018 by a handful of runners on the Mojácar Paseo, Los Bandidos has grown into a thriving multisport community. The club now embraces road running, cycling, sea swimming and triathlon, welcoming all ages, abilities and nationalities - residents and visitors alike.
More than just a sports club, Los Bandidos are active members of the local community. They are currently collecting donations for the Red Cross food bank and have also supported the Christmas toy appeal. Los Bandidos are proudly supported by Caracola Car Hire, Five Bones Pet Hotel, Heladería Blu, Oasis Fashions and Restaurante Piamonte.
And, true to form, the club remains famously sociable - most sessions end with coffee, cake or breakfast, depending on the time of day. Follow Los Bandidos on Facebook to stay up to date and get involved: facebook.com/groups/490933409244200

My wife asked me one day why I didn’t play golf with Billy anymore. I asked her, “Would you keep on playing with a guy who always gets drunk, loses so many balls that other golfers are always playing through, tells lousy jokes while you putt, and gets on everyone’s nerves on the course?” “Certainly not, dear,” she replied. “Well, neither will he……”
It’s a sunny morning in the Big Forest and the Bear family is just waking up. Baby Bear goes downstairs and sits in his small chair at the table. He looks into his small bowl. It is empty! “Who’s been eating my porridge?” he squeaks. Father Bear arrives at the table and sits in his big chair. He looks into his big bowl. It is also empty! “Who’s been eating my porridge?” he roars. Mother Bear sticks her head out the kitchen door and yells, “For Pete’s sake, how many times do we have to go through this? It was Mother Bear who got up first. It was Mother Bear who woke everybody else in the house up. It was Mother Bear who unloaded the dishwasher from last night and put everything away. It was Mother Bear who went out into the cold early morning air to fetch the newspaper. It was Mother Bear who set the table. It was Mother Bear who put the cat out, cleaned the litter box and filled the cat’s water and food dish. And now that you’ve decided to come down stairs and grace me with your presence, listen good because I’m only going to say this one more time: I haven’t made the f***ing porridge yet!”
I’m not usually one for rushing around posting warnings, but I had a close call yesterday. I walked into B & Q at lunchtime and an old guy dressed in a black shirt with an orange apron asked me if I wanted decking. Fortunately, I got in the first punch and sorted the bastard out. Those less wary might not be so lucky, so pass this warning on!
Air Force One and the Farmer
Air Force One went off the radar and crashed in the middle of rural America. Panic stricken, the Secret Service mobilised, got some search and rescue helicopters and set off. After four hours they located the plane near a farm. When they landed they saw the aircraft was totally destroyed, with only a burned hulk left smouldering in a tree line that bordered the farm.
The Secret Service and paramedics raced up to the smoking hulk but could find no remains of the crew or the President or staff. To their amazement, a lone farmer was ploughing a field not too far away as if nothing at all had happened. They hurried over to surround the man’s tractor. “Sir?” the senior Secret Service agent asked, panting and out of breath, “Did you see this terrible accident happen?” “Yep. Sure did,” the man muttered unconcernedly. “Do you realise that it is the President of the United States’ airplane?” “Yep.” “Were there any survivors?” the agent gasped. “Nope, they’s all kilt straight out.” The farmer sighed, cutting off his tractor motor. “I done buried them all myself. Took most of the morning.”
“The President of the United States is DEAD?” the senior agent gulped in disbelief. “Yep,….. he kept a-saying he wasn’t ... but everybody knows what a liar he is!”
Two hunters are out in the woods in New Jersey when one of them collapses. He doesn’t seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed.
The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, ‘My friend is dead! What can I do?’ The operator says: ‘Calm down, I can help. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.’ There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says ‘OK, now what?’

A woman went to her health centre and was seen by a new young doctor. After she had been in his room for about 4 minutes, she rushed out, screaming and set off running down the corridor. An older doctor stopped her, asked her what ever was the matter, and she told him. He managed to sit her down and told her to wait and not worry. He marched into the young doctor’s room and demanded, “What on earth is the matter with you? I’ve known Mrs Terry for years. She is 64 with four children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant!” The young doctor finished typing something onto his computer, looked up and said, “Cured her hiccups though, didn’t it?”
A farmer and his brand new bride are riding home in a wagon pulled by a team of horses, when the older horse stumbles. The farmer says, “That’s once.” A little further along, the horse stumbles again. The farmer says, “That’s twice.” When the old horse stumbles again, the farmer quietly reaches under his seat, pulls out a shotgun, and shoots the horse. His brand new bride yells, “That was an awful thing to do!” The farmer says, “That’s once.”
On a routine police patrol parked outside a local pub, the police noticed a man leaving the bar so intoxicated he could barely walk. He stumbled around the carpark for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After what seemed an eternity and trying his keys on five different vehicles he finally managed to find his own car, which he fell into. He sat there for a few minutes as several other patrons left the bar and drove off. Finally, he started the car, switched the wipers on and off (it was a dry night), flicked the hazard flasher on and off, tooted the horn, and then switched on the lights. He moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little, and then remained stationary for a few more minutes as more patrons left in their vehicles. At last, when almost everyone had left, he pulled out of the parking lot and started to drive slowly down the street. The officer, having patiently waited all this time, started up his patrol car, put on the flashing lights, promptly pulled the man over and carried out a breathalyzer test.
To his amazement, the breathalyzer indicated no evidence of the man having consumed alcohol at all. Dumbfounded, the officer said, “I’ll have to ask you to accompany me to the station. This breathalyzer equipment must be broken.”
“I doubt it,” answered the man. Tonight I’m the designated decoy. The others all drove away.
A priest is walking down the street one day when he notices a very small boy trying to press a doorbell on a house across the street. However, the boy is very small and the doorbell is too high for him to reach. After watching the boy’s efforts for some time, the priest moves closer to the boy’s position. He steps smartly across the street, walks up behind the little fellow and, placing his hand kindly on the child’s shoulder leans over and gives the doorbell a sold ring. Crouching down to the child’s level, the priest smiles benevolently and asks, “And now what, my little man?”
To which the boy replies, “Now we run!”
