The copy deadline for the March issue is February 18th.

Atthe start of a New Year there are always new regulations or the introduction of new schemes. The one that affects an estimated 30 million people is the regulation that the new V-16 DGT 3.0 SIM emergency lights have to be carried on a wide range of vehicles and used in the event of an accident or breakdown. The DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) have announced that there will be a “grace period” before people who don’t have one will be fined.
The DGT had ruled that from January 2nd, owners of electric scooters had to have third party insurance, after they had been registered nationally. Because the registration is not yet in force, the time when insurance is obligatory has been postponed. Also, a new scheme for subsidies for the purchase of electric or hybrid cars will be backdated to January 1st but the details have not been published so far. Spanish state pensions went up by 2.7% from January 1st and the 2026 minimum wage, not yet agreed or published, will be back dated.
Healthwise, women who have mammograms and need follow-up checks will have any that are needed carried out during just one visit. To cut down on people going to their doctor for regular renewed prescriptions for medication, by the end of March they won’t have to do this. Farmacias will contact doctors who will authorise the renewal. This will mean that there are more appointments available for people who do need to see a doctor. From January there are subsidies for children up to the age of 16 to obtain glasses or contact lenses. We have more details of all the above regulations and schemes in our “In the News” section.
Town halls, concert and theatre venues are now in the swing of announcing forthcoming events and in February, the Águilas carnival takes place. February 17th is “Mardi Gras”, carnival day, and also Shrove Tuesday, which is “Pancake Day” in the UK. Carnivals are supposed to be finished before February 18th which is Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, but the Águilas carnival always runs over
and the last major procession is not until Saturday, February 21st. In our “What’s On” section we have more details.

Saturday, February 28th (Dia de Andalucía) is a fiesta day throughout Andalucía because in 1980, over 90% of inhabitants voted for Andalucía to become an Autonomous Community which came into force the following year. An autonomous community is responsible for running their own parliament, courts, health service, education and regional transport. They can set their own thresholds for inheritance or gift tax that became very generous in Andalucía a few years ago, and determine the taxes paid when a second hand property changes hands. They can introduce their own travel subsidies that usually mirror national ones that were announced in January. They can apply for EU grants but they cannot change the IVA (VAT) percentages which is a central government tax, nor the national subsidies for electric or hybrid car purchases. Taxes at airports are also fixed nationally by the air travel entity ‘Aena’. 50% of the income tax paid every year in an autonomous community is for them to spend, along with other grants.
There are no national fiesta dates in February or March but February 14th is St. Valentine’s Day. Easter dates this year are Easter Thursday, April 2nd, Good Friday, April 3rd and Easter Sunday, April 5th. In Andalucía, Easter Thursday is a fiesta day as it was swapped with ‘Dia de San José’ (Father’s Day, March 19th.) which is a holiday in other areas.

At 7.45pm on Sunday, January 18th, a horrendous train crash involving two trains occurred in Córdoba province. The death toll went up to 44 people, 170 were injured with 48 in hospital, some of them in intensive care. The last three carriages of a train from Málaga to Madrid, for reasons that were described as “inexplicable”, became derailed and invaded the other line. A train from Madrid to Huelva ploughed into these carriages 20 seconds later and two carriages of this train fell 4 metres down an embankment. Both trains were the ‘Avia’ class, not the ‘AVE’ (high speed trains), and the one that derailed belonged to the ‘Iryo’ company with trains manufactured by ‘Hitachi Rail’, that operate alongside the ‘RENFE’ company. The accident was on a straight part of the track that had been totally rebuilt last May. The ‘Iryo’ train carrying 299 passengers was only four-years old, of the latest type, with a major safety inspection on January 15th. The second train operated by RENFE had 184 passengers with 53 in the first two carriages. The speed limit was 250km/h and the trains were travelling at 205km/h and 210km/h. Both trains had substantial safety features that controlled the trains in the event of “human error” by the drivers, one of whom was killed, but this was quickly discounted. Over 300 emergency personnel went to the scene including 41 soldiers with 15 vehicles from the emergency ‘UME’ Army Battalion in Seville, along with fleets of ambulances and police and health service helicopters.
From January 1st, the V-16 DGT 3.0 SIM emergency lights to indicate a breakdown or accident are compulsory. According to data from the Spanish Traffic Department (DGT), in Almería province there are 497,418 vehicles required to have one. These include 396,485 passenger cars, 57,001 trucks, 43,072 vans, and 860 buses. It is recommended that the 53,168 motorbikes display the beacon, and the 2,325 “historic” vintage vehicles are also required to have one. In all of Spain the total is put at 30 million. The DGT have stated that there will be a “grace period” before fines of 80 euros apply for drivers who do not carry one. However, not using
the emergency lights when necessary, or using older models that are not the new e-SIM version will incur a fine of 200 euros. There are many myths and false claims on the internet and one of the more common ones is that the device “spies” on the user and where they are, even when it’s turned off! This is completely false because they do not have any type of sensor, camera or microphone and they only operate when switched on. After 100 seconds the location is sent to the DGT 3.0 platform website every 100 seconds for up to 30mins. After this time, the standard batteries should be changed and also after 18 months if they have not been used. They are not permanently connected to the internet and the devices do not transmit a person’s name, identity number, the vehicle make or model, and they are not paired with any other device such as a mobile phone. They only provide the exact location where they have been activated, and connectivity from the SIM card is enabled until 2038. If a person wishes to test their V-16 light they can switch it on and establish that it works for a few seconds, but read the instructions first. The DGT have confirmed that if a driver wants to put out warning triangles as well, they can do, but they stress that the whole point of the V-16 lights is that they can be put on the roof of a vehicle without getting out because they are magnetic. Drivers of large trucks and buses can put the lights on the side of the vehicle. For some time, the triangles have not been compulsory on motorways or fast roads because of many fatalities when a person is out of the vehicle. They state that 10% of serious accidents occur when a driver is out of their vehicle on the same side as the traffic flow. If the DGT see that several V-16 lights have been activated at the same place, they can warn other road users that there is a problem if there are overhead signal gantries where they can indicate that there are accidents and that a lane is now closed, if necessary. The DGT also make all the information available on navigation apps such as Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps that enable drivers to alter their route if they want to do this. Vehicle users have created mapabalizasv16.es that shows where the V-16 lights are operational in real time, in every part of Spain, and the map can be enlarged for each area.

They show the same information sent to the DGT but whether this infringes a person’s privacy is not yet clear. Finally, the DGT have pointed out that the V-16 lights do not send a signal to the emergency services. If they are needed, a call to 112 (general emergencies) or 061 (the emergency health number) is still necessary as normal. Similarly, a driver still has to ring the number provided by their insurance company to ask for a breakdown vehicle to be sent to them.
Until the end of this year, with a budget of 48 million euros, ‘Plan Veo’ is a scheme throughout Spain to give a 100 euro grant towards the purchase of glasses and contact lenses for persons aged 16 or under and calculations are that it will benefit 500,000 children. Glasses and contact lenses are the most expensive products not available from the National Health Service. The scheme is in two parts, for children age 5 or under, and from age 6 to 16. The reasons for the grants is that 10% of children have sight problems that are not resolved because of the cost, and 20% have the same glasses or contact lenses for several years without further eye tests. This can lead to problems in the most formative years that affect learning, self-esteem and daily life. For children 5 and under, there has to be a test at no cost, from a registered ophthalmologist employed by the health service (doctor’s surgeries can supply the names of these people) or a private ophthalmologist who is participating. The prescription (if needed) is then taken to opticians in the scheme who supply the glasses. They complete the necessary form and send it to the health authority after they have given the discount. If the cost is less than 100 euros parents or guardians do not have to pay anything, or the difference if over 100 euros. Children age 6 to 16 can obtain a prescription from a qualified optician and they will provide the glasses / contact lenses with the same costs. For contact lenses the cleaning liquid is free for one year. Children and young people eligible have to be official residents of Spain with the relevant document and provide their National Health number. The National and Guardia Civil Police conduct continuous operations to dismantle the activities and logistics of the owners of the high speed ‘Narco-launches’ that bring drugs and people to our province. Up to the end of November, they seized 86,348 litres of petrol in storage or being transported to the launches. The offence had been having a quantity of petrol that was over the amount allowed to be stored, with a fine, but now it is an offence that is part of criminal activities with a prison term. A big problem is that the criminals use low-cost petrol stations that are not manned at night to fill up multiple containers. The Royal Decree 706 in 2017 laid down technical instructions for “Installations for supplying vehicles and the regulation of petroleum installations”, and stipulates that “In self-service petrol stations where there is no personnel present on the premises of the installation, the mechanism that fixes the nozzle to give a continuous flow must be disengaged and the time of each supply will be limited to three minutes and a total volume of 75 litres.” This makes filling a large number of containers and using credit cards multiple times a much longer procedure. Consequently, police on patrol have a greater chance of catching these people in the act. The police intend to enforce these regulations by visiting petrol station that are unmanned at night. If they lack the required restrictions they will be fined, with a theoretic fine of up to 6 million euros. Apart from the fuel they seized 65 boats, and the number of people arrested and under investigation rose to 261, following 50 police operations. They seized 1,420kgs of cannabis, 1,500kgs of cocaine, 414,307 marijuana plants and 132 firearms.
The ‘DGT’ (The Spanish Traffic Department) continually express their concern that the average age of cars in Spain is about 15. They consider that they may not be regularly serviced with only one before the ITV (MOT) tests and they lack modern safety standards. Last year the most second-hand sales were of 69,000 Volkswagen Golf cars with an average age of 16.5. The second most popular one was the Renault Megan with 62,000 purchases,

average age 16.3. The Seat Ibiza had a very similar number of sales, average age 15.4, followed by the Ford Focus with 52,000 sales and an average age of 15.5 years.
Any deaths from domestic violence are, of course, very tragic. Throughout Spain in 2025 a total of 49 women were killed by their partner or ex-partner, but this is less than in recent years. Very sadly, three children were murdered and 35 children lost their mother. There were 14 deaths in Andalucía but this is put down to the large population. The 016 helpline assists all victims of gender-based violence and their families 24/7 in 53 different languages, along with the email address 016-online@igualdad.gob.es. Support is also available via WhatsApp at 600 000 016, and minors can contact the ANAR Foundation at 900 202 010. In an emergency situation, a person can call the 112 emergency number, or the National Police (091) or the Guardia Civil Police (062). A call to the 061 helpline does not show up in the list of calls made from a mobile phone.
The High Court in Madrid are ruling on an appeal by Mojácar town hall, that could affect every beach bar in Spain. It relates to the “I Love Mojácar” beach bar on El Lance Nuevo beach. Mojácar town hall refused to grant a building licence to construct a permanent beach bar with a kitchen area, bar and terrace in 2023 and it contravened the Maritime Boundary (the distance from the sea where buildings are prohibited). The owner replied that he had permission from the Junta de Andalucía Ministry of the Environment and Planning for a 300m2 building to be used for 15 years. The mayor of Mojácar, Francisco García, states that with the approval of the 2023 Mojácar Municipal Urban Planning Document, ratified by the Junta, the project presented by the owner became viable from urban planning perspective. The owner applied for and was granted a permit by the Junta the same year. Francisco García states that going to the High Court “is not a crusade against this particular business, and all beach bars, but rather a search for the legal standing of the municipal
technicians.” The case has already been heard by a court in Almería and the High Court in Andalucía that ruled against the town hall that has generated the appeal. The High Court ruling will “determine the true powers that municipalities have over public land and whether it retains the power to veto a licence when a regional concession has already been granted.” This is a question that affects hundreds of local councils along the entire Spanish coast with “I Love Mojácar” becoming a test case.
On January 13th, 2003, Carboneras town hall approved a building licence for the property company ‘Azata del Sol’ to build a 21 storey, 411 room hotel that became known as the ‘Algarrobico Hotel’. When Greenpeace discovered the hotel in 2006, when it was 95% complete and interviews were being held for staff, they lodged a formal complaint that it had been built too close to the maritime boundary which is the legal distance for buildings from the sea. There were conflicting opinions as to whether the building line was 50m or 100m from the boundary and in 2006, a judge in Almería paralysed the construction. Since then there have been a multitude of court cases with the plan that the hotel is demolished. In February 2025 central government ruled that they were able to demolish the part of the hotel that infringes the maritime boundary (about 40%) but the developer went to court, so this is not yet completely resolved. The rest of the hotel needs the Junta de Andalucía to appropriate the land after Carboneras town hall nullified the building licence. About three years ago a judge ruled that the hotel was “plainly legal” until this was done and the Junta agreed with this. Carboneras town hall has been very reluctant to do this as the developer is asking for compensation of 70 million euros which is the value of the hotel following a third party valuation and they are extremely concerned that they may have to pay compensation. On July 11th last year, Carboneras town hall were told that they had until January 11th to declare the building licence invalid and have it ratified by the Advisory Council of Andalucía that normally takes about one month. At the end of November, the town hall were

told by the Andalucía High Court that if they did not comply within 10 days there would be financial sanctions against the mayor and council members and their continual excuses for not doing this were not acceptable. On December 5th at 8am the town hall issued their cancellation of the licence but on December 12th, the Andalucía High Court ruled that what they had done was not sufficient to comply with the instructions and they must send an amended document by January 19th. If not, they could face a fine of 1,000 euros every 20 days. At the end of December, Carboneras town hall announced that the amended document had been submitted. The demolition is not going to happen anytime soon, as the Junta de Andalucía have to appropriate the land and any compensation for the developer has to be resolved. Azata de Sol immediately announced further court proceedings claiming that the way the annulling of the licence had been done by imposing a period of six months was not legal and it would be contested. Many years ago, central government agreed that they would carry out the demolition and the Junta de Andalucía have to restore the land to its original state. At the time, the cost for each of these was given as being about 7 million euros that will have to be re-calculated, eventually.
Almería city is to bring in regulations that particularly apply to electric scooters. In December, the Councillor for Citizen Security, María del Mar García Lorca, presented the draft of new regulations including online courses for persons who already have an electric scooter or are thinking of buying one. The Policía Local already tour schools to explain the regulations and the highway code. The city council would like there to be driving tests, but this would have to introduced by the ‘DGT’, the Spanish Traffic Authority. Other proposals are to establish a minimum age of 16, underlining their use to one person only, mandating the use of helmets, specifying permitted routes and maximum speeds, creating a municipal registry and defining a clear and proportionate penalty system. A national regulation supposed to start from January 2nd was that third party insurance had to
be obtained which is very sensible. However, this is dependent on a national register put in place by the DGT and this is not yet in force. They state that the technical development of the registry is already complete, but the royal decree that will give it legal cover is still being processed. Once the royal decree is approved and enters into force, all personal mobility vehicles must be registered in the Vehicle Registry. The procedure, according to the DGT, will be simple and entirely online. The DGT has specified that personal mobility vehicles weighing more than 25kg and with a maximum speed exceeding 14 km/h must be insured, whether they are registered or not. The Guardia Civil Police sate that there were 37 deaths in traffic accidents in our province last year and 21 were people not in vehicles. Of these, for the first time ever, there were four deaths from users of electric scooters. Two were in interurban roads where riding scooters is banned and two were in Almeria city. The majority of the 21 deaths occurred between midnight and 8am and the police stress that all people not in vehicles must wear a reflective jacket during these hours.
Mojácar Town Council has implemented two projects that represent the municipality’s biggest technological leap forward in mobility, tourism, and urban management. These are the ‘Sustainable Tourism Destinations Project (PSTD 2025)’ and the ‘Cicerone 2025’ program, which combine analytical sensors, smart cameras, digital displays, and an AI-powered tourist assistant. The new digital ecosystem allows monitoring of visitor flows, improving security and offering personalised tourist information both on public roads and in municipal offices and spaces. The PSTD 2025 has enabled the introduction of a ‘Tourism Intelligence Platform’ that centralises data on tourism activity, mobility, hotel occupancy, digital performance, and visitor behaviour. This system is complemented by 20 WiFi sensors capable of analysing visitor flow in real time and 28 traffic cameras located at entrances, roundabouts and busy areas throughout the municipality. The equipment is completed by eight parking control cameras and information panels displaying the occupancy of municipal parking lots.

In parallel, the Cicerone 2025 project incorporates interactive tourist information signs on 55 inch screens at three inside and four outside locations including an LED video wall, touchscreen monitors, information tablets, and a digital charging station. All of this is integrated with Cicerone AI, a tourist assistant based on artificial intelligence that gives personalised recommendations, routes, and immediate answers in several languages. All screens are connected to the cloud and operate 24 hours a day. Meanwhile, Cicerone AI acts as a digital guide, capable of providing information tailored to each visitor’s profile, recording statistical data, and conducting satisfaction surveys. The mayor of Mojácar, Francisco García Cerdá, has emphasised that digitalisation “represents a profound change in the way the municipality is managed. The new systems allow us to understand how people move around, what visitors demand, and in which areas we need to take action. This provides us with objective criteria for better planning.” (In an article we explain how Almería city has introduced a similar system for tourism).
Income tax in Spain is split two ways in a 50 / 50 divide between the state and the autonomous communities, in our case Andalucía. Figures from June 30th last year, from the income tax calendar year 2024 showed that the Junta received 8.7 billion euros. This amount of money has increased by 71% in the last seven years since 2018 when the total was 3.6 billion euros. In 2024, a total of 4.4 billion income tax returns were filed in Andalucía that is 904,700 more than in 2018. In other words, since 2019, the number of personal income tax returns has increased by 25.7%. Some 18.7% of tax returns from people with a taxable income exceeding 33,000 euros accounted for 68.8% of the income tax paid. The remaining 4.5% with a taxable income exceeding 53,000 euros contributed 34.8% of the regional tax revenue. In reality, there are many tax breaks in Andalucía and without these the income would have been higher. These include tax breaks for primary residences, for subsidised primary residences, and for young people; for the birth, adoption, or fostering of minors; for large
families; for educational expenses; for people with disabilities as well as for the care of parents over 75 years of age in single-parent families. The latest tax reductions, which are not included in these figures, will appear in the 2026 tax return with deductions for gym memberships, pet veterinary care, and food for people with celeriac disease. Other deductions are also included for those who rent a home and are under 35 or over 65 with a 1,200 euros deduction for young people and pensioners with an income of less than 25,000 euros. This is a substantial change compared to the existing tax breaks of 500 euros for salaries up to 19,000 euros.
About two months ago it emerged that follow-up appointments after a mammogram, in many parts of Andalucía, were not being sent out which caused an immense fuss, as can be expected. Errors were detected in the breast cancer screening program communication feature, a problem that has required the review of more than 2,300 tests. From mid-January and fully integrated by the end of February, a woman who needs a follow up test, whether it is a further mammogram, a breast ultrasound, or core needle biopsy, they will be performed in a single visit. This eliminates travel and delays in a process that, until now, could require up to three separate hospital visits. The Junta de Andalucía Minister of Health, Presidency, and Emergencies, Antonio Sanz, states, “With the implementation of the single-visit procedure, the Regional Government aims to ensure that any woman with a suspicious finding receives a faster, more consistent, and more reliable diagnostic response throughout Andalucía. The objective is two-fold. On the one hand, to prevent an incident like the one that occurred from ever happening again, and on the other, to strengthen the quality of the breast cancer screening program.”
Since 2018, when Pedro Sanchéz became Prime Minister, the minimum wage in Spain for a 40hr week has gone up by 61% from 736 euros gross per month to 1,184 euros last year, paid in 14

instalments. An employer usually divides the total annual amount by 12 to calculate normal monthly payments. The aim has been that the national minimum wage increase represents 60% of the average net Spanish salary which is 32,600 euros. The 2025 increase to 16,576 euros was an extra 50 euros per month and 700 euros annually. Until last year, the ‘Hacienda’ (Tax office) put up the threshold for paying income tax to the same amount, so no tax was due. Last year, there were heated arguments between the Finance Minister and the Minister for Labour, because the Hacienda stated that as the rise was more than a living wage it was taxable and the amount of tax payable was about 340 euros for a single person with only an age allowance. Eventually it was agreed that the tax paid would be refunded in the following tax year, so this year for last year. The Ministry of Labour consulted a team of experts last October and they have concluded that there should be two increases. 3.1% to 1,221 euros gross per month if the salary is still tax-exempt (that is 17,094 euros annually) and 4.7% to 1,240 per month (17,360 euros annually) if it becomes subject to income tax. In the first scenario (without taxation), the minimum wage would increase by 37 euros per month, and in the second (with income tax), by 56 euros. The tax payable on this amount would then go up to about 600 euros. Both percentages exceed the rate of inflation, which averaged 2.7% over the last 12 months. The Hacienda point out that the only people liable for any tax are going to be single people with no allowances apart from their personal allowance, and a person with children and other family commitments that reduce their tax will not pay any. The Minister of Labour states that, in her opinion, the minimum wage should not be taxed and that tax reform should begin with “those at the top” but she conceded that this is not within her control. The unions consider that the increases are justified but employer associations think that it is too much and suggest a percentage that is less than the 2.7% inflation. Meanwhile, the Hacienda have suggested that they will refund the 600 euros tax where it is applicable, but keep the tax threshold at the same amount. Otherwise, people paying in higher tax brackets would also
pay less tax and the Hacienda would have a much reduced income. When all this has been hammered out, the increase will be backdated to January 1st.
In December, the Consumer Affairs Department announced a fine of 64 million euros for Airbnb for allowing properties to be advertised on its platform without the required license reference number. The fine is equivalent to six times the illicit profit the San Francisco-based company allegedly obtained from these listings between the time it was notified they had to remove them and the time before they did this. In October 2024 Airbnb were notified that they had to remove 65,122 properties but with no action by December 2024 it was announced that sanctions would follow. Airbnb mounted an appeal to the Spanish Supreme Tribunal but this failed and in June last year they were told the properties must be removed and sanctions would be levied. Part of the fine is because Airbnb were also accused of not removing properties where there was “clearly” a false or incorrect licence number. Pablo Bustinduy, the Consumer Minister, stated that very large companies such as Airbnb had to comply with the law, the same as any other companies.
The salaries that mayors received in Almería province in 2024, in the 103 municipalities, have been published and the average was 47,473 euros. María del Mar Vázquez, mayoress of Almería city was paid 91,101 euros, the 4th highest in Andalucía after the highest salaries in Seville, Málaga and Marbella. Gabriel Amat, the mayor of Roquetas de Mar, was paid 88,534 euros and Francisco Góngora, mayor of El Ejido, received 70,680 euros. 8 mayors were paid more than 50,000 euros with Pulpí at 55,700 euros, and in Garrucha, HuércalOvera and Mojácar the salary was exactly 50,000 euros. Mayors paid between 45,000 to 50,000 euros were those in Vera, Cantoria, Pechina and Zurgena. All these salaries are full time but some councillors are part time, so they have another job. Some mayors did not declare their salaries, or they were not in the right format and these included

Albox, Lucainena de las Torres and Taberna. Mayors and councillors can give themselves a pay rise that has to be within certain limits, so the 2024 salaries may have been increased in 2025.
The Territorial Delegate for Health and Consumer Affairs, Juan de la Cruz Belmonte, visited the Cardiology Service of the Huércal-Overa hospital at the end of November and he highlighted the latest generation ultrasound machine for outpatient consultations installed in 2024. He stated that “it represented a substantial improvement due to the features it includes, which have allowed for better workflows and greater efficiency, by having advanced diagnostic tools that provide clear and quick information on the patient’s condition.” He explained that “Echocardiography is currently the most widely used diagnostic tool in cardiology due to its non-invasive nature, high diagnostic accuracy, and continuous technological advancements. This procedure uses ultrasound to obtain highresolution, two-dimensional or three-dimensional images of the heart in real time, allowing for the evaluation of valve and heart muscle function and the detection of abnormalities resulting from various pathologies, including cardiac diseases.”
There has been a 26% increase in echocardiography activity, going from 3,623 studies carried out between January and October 2024 to 4,582 in the same period of 2025. He also announced that the hospital is on track to break its annual record for MRI scans. Since 2022, the service has gone from carrying out 1,844 studies to 2,639 in 2024, representing a 43% increase in just three years, and by last November, a total of 2,131 scans had been performed with an average of 10 per day. The management of La Inmaculada Hospital emphasises that “This increase in activity has been made possible by the incorporation of new advanced imaging techniques, the extension of operating hours, and co-ordination with specialised care teams, which has improved accessibility and care for patients throughout the region.”
An important change in Andalucía in the system of
how doctors and farmacias (chemists) interact was pioneered last month and will be fully operational by March. At present, people with chronic illnesses or other medical conditions who need repeat prescriptions for long periods of time have to go to their doctor to get a new one. This will be scrapped and farmacias will be able to request them directly from doctors. According to estimates from the Andalucía Health Service, approximately 30% of primary care appointments at a doctor’s surgery are related to administrative procedures such as prescription renewals, and the new scheme will have a significant impact in reducing the waiting lists for people needing normal appointments. The Health Department states, “For patients, especially the elderly, or those with mobility issues, this initiative will significantly improve their quality of life by eliminating unnecessary travel and simplifying access to their regular medications”. At present, farmacias know when a prescription needs to be renewed and they put stickers on the medication to remind people that this is the last one and they need a new prescription. Also, another phase in the second quarter of this year is that prescriptions from doctors in Andalucía will be valid throughout Spain, from any farmacia, which will help people needing medication that are temporarily out of Andalucía.
With major investment by central government and the EU, Volkswagen intend to begin to produce batteries for electric cars in September at Sagunto (Valencia) in a new ‘PowerCo’ factory that will have cost 10 billion euros. The first phase will produce 55,000 battery cells each day, sufficient for 450550 electric cars built at their factories in Martorell (Barcelona) and Landaben (Navarra). In 2027 the second phase will be started to produce the same number of cells by 2028. Phase one will create 1,600 jobs and when phase two is completed and reaches full capacity they will employ more than 3,000 people. Machinery from China is on order as they are the world leader in manufacturing batteries for electric cars. The South Korean company K-Ensol will construct the special “dry rooms” with very closely controlled temperature,

humidity and dust levels. Eventually, the dry rooms will cover an area equivalent to 8 football pitches. Volkswagen intend that the battery cells will enable them to produce several electric car models with a selling price of 25,000 euros or less. Meanwhile, in partnership with the Chinese company CATL, the Stellantis group are building a battery plant at Zaragoza. The type of batteries will be LFP (lithium iron phosphate) at both factories.
The EU want to make Bizum, or very similar ones such as Wero, available to make purchases, anywhere in member states, instantly. Bizum started out in 2017 as a rapid transfer system between bank accounts in less than 10 seconds. It is available 24/7 every day of the year and has gone from 31.8 million immediate transfers made in 2018 in Spain, to 1.87 billion last year. Fernando Rodríguez Ferrer, Deputy General Manager of International Expansion at Bizum states that “We are working on a payment solution, based on immediate transfers, through the mobile phone, where it is enough to bring the phone close to the payment terminal. At the moment this is one of our priorities and we hope to be able to extend it, hand in hand with our banks, throughout 2026. The idea is that paying with Bizum is as simple as it is with Apple Pay or Samsung Pay. The difference is that behind that digital wallet there will not be a card, but an instant transfer that travels from account to account in seconds.” In Spain, Iberpay connects banks to process transfers and handles 63% of instant transactions and expects to reach 90% or even 100% soon. “We are prepared for all transfers in the system to be instantaneous when this transition occurs,” says José Luis Encinas, CEO of Iberpay. The Spanish network is fully integrated into Europe, not just Spain. Iberpay connects more than 4,500 banks in 41 countries and processes more than 300,000 instant cross-border transfers every day. It is estimated that with ordinary bank transfers in Europe there is 2,000 billion euros in the system every day waiting to be transferred. The EU want their own payment system as an alternative to Visa or Mastercard that are not under their control, but they fully accept that conventional
credit cards are here to stay. They have decades of use, very mature security systems and universal acceptance. The ECB (Central European Bank) state that “The proposed EU Euro-system recognises the risks of over-reliance on a small number of large non-European payment providers, whose interests may not be aligned with those of large European players. This concentration can reduce competition and facilitate the abuse of market power, to the detriment of consumers and businesses.” Currently, there are two large blocks led by Bizum in Spain, Italy, Portugal and Andorra who intend to link up with Norway and Sweden. In the centre of the EU the leading platform is Wero, which integrates the facility in France, Germany and Belgium. Both parties are negotiating an agreement so that any European citizen can pay with one app in any EU country, which will allow more than 300 million people to make instant payments safely, quickly and efficiently.
Particularly during the last few years, there has been two distinct views regarding bullfights. Is it a barbaric and cruel sport causing prolonged injury and suffering to the bull, or it is a cultural heritage of Spain that should still be recognised as such? In Spain, if there are over 500,000 signatures on a petition sent to the Spanish Parliament it has to be debated. Last October, a petition against bullfighting with 665,000 signatures was presented, but no political party including the present centreleft PSOE party who have a majority in parliament, with a coalition of other parties, would debate it. The petition was to withdraw national cultural protection from bullfighting because in 2003 a conservative government led by the centre-right PP political party ruled that “Bullfighting forms part of the cultural heritage worthy of protection throughout the national territory.” It also decreed that “the public authorities shall guarantee its conservation and promote its enrichment.” The recently rejected petition sought to repeal this legislation as being totally out of date on two fronts. The first one was to end animal abuse, and the second one was to return power to the regional governments (in our case Andalucía) rather
than central government. The debate continues in newspapers and on radio and television stations, despite the political setback. Gutiérrez Bañares, former president of the Cocherito bullfighting club in Bilbao, the largest in Spain, has stated, “Who are they to decide what is culture and what isn’t?” The Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, was forced to make a statement after the petition was thrown out and acknowledged in an interview that bullfighting “is not a resolved issue within the PSOE.” He explained it this way: “There are activists who are in favour, and others who are against, just like Spanish society.” The animal rights movement is gaining strength however, and 77% of the Spanish population rejects bullfighting, according to a report published last year. Bullfighting is the cultural activity that generates the most opposition, and 68% of Spaniards state that their interest in it lies between 0 and 2 (on a scale of 10), a percentage that exceeds 80% in Catalonia, Galicia and the Canary Islands. At the other end
of the spectrum, 6.4% of the population is “really interested” in bullfighting, with the highest interest found in the regions of Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla León, and Extremadura. The Ministry of Culture provides figures and say that throughout Spain, people going to a bullfight at least once a year remains at a mere 5.9%. The age groups with the highest attendance figures are in the 45 to 64 bracket, and after this, the highest attendance is the 15 to 24 age group. Despite the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child recommending that Spain prohibit attendance by young people under the age of 18, admission is still permitted for anyone aged 14 or over, but critics say that this is not enforced at all. People behind the failed petition point out that in France and Portugal, the only other countries in Europe where there are still bullfights, the bull is not killed. They consider that this could easily be extended to Spain and more people would go to see them, as this is far from being a barbaric and cruel event.

The ‘AVE’ Operational in 2027, 2028 or 2029? Óscar Puente, the Spanish Minister of Transport, was interviewed in December by a journalist from the radio station ‘Cadena Sur’. He stated that the 200kms ‘Mediterranean Corridor’ that is the AVE (High Speed Train) from Murcia to Almería will be finished in 2027 and certification of the line would follow, with the intention that the line will be operational the same year. The problem for this to happen is the underground station at Lorca that has a completion date at present of “late 2027”. At the beginning of January, Óscar Puente stated in another interview that the AVE would be operational at the end of 2027 or in early 2028 “at the latest”. ‘La Mesa del Tren’ is a pressure group in Almería made up of a group of experts who have regularly reviewed the progress of the AVE and other rail links for the last 10 years. They accuse Óscar Puente of being totally misleading and say that even if all the work in our province is complete, the station at Lorca will in all probability not be completed until 2028. Certification testing with special trains needed afterwards will mean that the AVE will not arrive in Almería until 2029. On January 21st at 4pm, the pressure group had a meeting in Madrid with the Transport Ministry and pointed out that they would have to go there by road. Their President, Antonio Fernández complained that “If we want to go by train to a meeting in Madrid that lasts an hour in the afternoon, we would have to leave the day before, sleep in Madrid, attend the meeting, sleep in Madrid for a second night and return the next day which is totally unacceptable.”
In December, Vera town hall celebrated the arrival of the López-Peréz family from Antas who had moved there and applied to be put on the ‘padrón’ (the official list or residents) as this took the population to just over 20,000. They were awarded the use of the nearby Aquavera water park during the summer free of charge, free tickets for events at the municipal auditorium and unlimited access to the municipal swimming pool and gymnasium during 2026. The population has been going up by about 1,000 people for the last three years and the
mayor of Vera, Alfonso García, emphasised that “This increase is the result of a local development strategy focused on offering services and activities year-round, even outside of peak season, as well as promoting teleworking, boosting the business sector, and fostering innovation. One of the key examples of this commitment is the Vera business centre, considered among the most modern in the province of Almería. All of this has made the municipality a preferred destination for both new families and companies seeking to establish themselves in a dynamic and prosperous environment.” The promised arrival during 2028 of the AVE (High Speed Train) is also given as a reason for the increase. However, the National Institute of Statistics state that there are already 20,282 inhabitants!
The property developer Insur and the Cosentino “family office” have obtained the building licence for the ‘Las Terrazas’ project which is 125 apartments integrated into the Macenas Mediterranean Resort in Mojácar, with an investment of 50.4 million euros. Insur state that “its contemporary design, combined with a selection of top-quality materials will be some of the distinguishing features of this development, with one, two, and three-bedroom homes”. There will be terraces with sea views, penthouses and ground-floor apartments with private gardens, “designed with a Mediterranean architectural style.” Communal areas will feature an outdoor infinity pool, a heated indoor pool, a social club with a chill-out terrace, and a solarium facing the sea. Juan Conejo, Director of Promotion for Eastern Andalucía at Grupo Insur, states that “this ambitious project, which will generate more than 300 direct and indirect jobs, is the result of our partnership with the Cosentino family, which has allowed us to establish ourselves in a prime location in Almería.” The renovated golf course designed by the Stirling and Martin company will have 18 holes and a range of new amenities including a golf academy, a restaurant and a pro shop. It is expected to be operational by the end of this year. Meanwhile, construction is underway on the 5* hotel.

The total length of the human brain’s neural wiring (axons and dendrites) is vast, potentially reaching around 100,000 miles (160,000 km) per person, enough wiring to wrap around the Earth about four times. If the human cortex (the outer layer of the cerebrum) were unfolded, it would cover an area roughly the size of a pillowcase. Despite making up only about 2% of body weight, approximately 20% of the total oxygen in the human body is used by the brain, and the brain also uses 20% of the body’s total blood. Intelligence depends on how brain regions connect and communicate, not size or weight.
In 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, the Guinness Brewery managing director, got into an argument with someone about the world’s fastest game bird. When they couldn’t find the answer in any book, Beaver had the idea of writing a book to solve pub arguments. The first edition of The Guinness Book of Records was published in 1955 and was meant to be a promotional giveaway for the pub, but it immediately became a bestseller. The tallest man ever recorded is Robert Wadlow. Due to an enlarged pituitary gland, he grew to 8 feet and 11 inches before he died at age 22. Owls hold the record for the greatest animal head rotation.
The first person to look into space with a telescope was Galileo, nearly 400 years ago. In 1895, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, an early Russian rocket scientist, was the first to propose the concept of space elevators, a type of space transportation system. While Han Solo narrowly navigated a packed asteroid belt in the Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back, in reality, asteroids have about 400,000 cubic miles all to themselves. Therefore, the chances of colliding with an asteroid are about one in a billion. The first “Earthling” in space was Laika, a dog that was launched into space on the Soviet ship Sputnik 2 in 1957.

Enheduanna, an Akkadian princess and High Priestess, composed temple hymns around 2300 BC, making her the first known named author. The earliest written texts were meant to be read out loud. Words were written in a continuous stream that had to be deciphered by the reader. The first European book published on a printing press using moveable metal type was the Gutenberg Bible on February 23rd, 1455, creating the “Gutenberg Revolution.” Before this, manuscripts were handcopied, which could take years. The Bible is the best selling book ever, followed by Mao TseTung Quotations and the Harry Potter series.
Many countries, such as Greece, Australia, and Brazil, hold their elections at the weekend to encourage higher voter turnout. Traditionally, elections in the United States have been held on Tuesdays because, in the past, it allowed farmers to travel to polling stations. Tuesdays did not interfere with the Biblical Sabbath or with market day, which, in many towns was on a Wednesday. In the United States, individual states decide how and when to register voters, which has often led to controversy. Some 13 states allow voter registration on Election Day. The United States trails most developed nations with very low voter participation.
In April of 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant near Pripyat, Ukraine, suffered a catastrophic meltdown. The United Nations called the disaster the “greatest environmental catastrophe in the history of humanity.” The amount of radiation released in the Chernobyl explosion was 400 times higher than that created by the bomb dropped on Hiroshima during WWII, and radioactive rain reached as far away as Ireland. The area around the site is home to some five million Ukrainians, even though it is still contaminated. Ukraine was the world’s first state to give up its Soviet-era nuclear arsenal, dismantled in 1966.
Putsimply, Artificial Intelligences, “AI”, is the ability of massive super computers to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as problem-solving and decision-making. Huge amounts of data have to be put in initially which is known as the “training phase” and machine learning is the result. The super computers need enormous amounts of electrical energy, partly to drive very sophisticated chips and processors and to super cool the equipment as there are very high temperatures generated. Liquids are used that need high levels of power to pump the coolants through the servers. All the data needs vast storage capacity that also requires high levels of electricity.
AI has been described as the modern day equivalent of the printing press and how it will evolve is the subject of many predictions and speculation. One use is the interpretation of data and the provision of consequent super fast conclusions. In Almería province there are various uses already.
In agriculture, ‘Ikos Advanced’, a company from Adra has developed hardware with robots using AI that takes 144 measurements in greenhouses every day, such as salinity, ambient temperature and soil composition, with recommendations as to exactly when irrigations is necessary. It also provides monitoring of any pests present and the exact ecological treatment needed from the introduction of the right insects. The Ikos CEO, Joaquín Soriano, states that 2,000 growers are already using it across fifteen different crops, generating 200 million data points. The power comes from solar panels to reduce reliance on normal electricity.
In education, AI can be a very useful tool in classrooms and training centres. It’s no surprise that more and more young people are turning to the popular Chat GPT for schoolwork. This practice has spread across all educational levels in secondary schools, colleges and universities. Teachers point out that it is a tool that can be very beneficial, but it is important that pupils don’t rely on it, and information in some cases is incorrect until it has been modified. Chat GPT can be told that it has come to a conclusion that is not
valid, or even that it has made something up! Pupils are told that if they have made extensive use of Chat GPT in homework or an essay, they have to specify that this has been done. Almería University now has new degree courses that deal with AI and Cybersecurity, and the demand from potential students is very high.

In health and medicine, experts state that AI will never replace doctors or consultants but both of them can work together. Dr. Bartolomé García Pérez is a renowned physician from Almería and he states, “AI is very useful in medicine, but its reliability depends on its application and the specific clinical context. We can say that diagnostic imaging (radiology, dermatology and ophthalmology) can detect patterns with similar or even greater accuracy than experienced physicians. Without a doubt, it is a transformative change, a before and after with no turning back. It’s a clinical copilot that helps to analyse medical histories and suggest diagnoses. It is freeing up time for complex decisionmaking and patient care.”
The ‘Costa de Almería’ tourist body uses AI to give information to tourists to meet their individual requirements and is available in 50 languages. An AI chatbot responds to questions from people who are coming, or thinking of coming to our province. It deals with activities such as walking, hiking or horse riding, land and sea sports options, and cultural activities. Mojácar now has a similar one.

Stop Accidents is a pressure group that was founded in 2000. The political situation in Spain at present is that the ‘PSOE’ government are having problems with their coalition partners and the ‘PP’ party are calling for premature General Elections, not waiting until 2027 when there has to be one. ‘Stop Accidents’ are calling on both main parties to settle their differences and pass the new alcohol laws approved in draft form.
Alcohol is cited as a primary factor in fatal traffic accidents in Spain, and data from the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences shows that 48% of all deceased drivers in traffic accidents had consumed alcohol. The proposed legislation would lower the limit in the blood from 0.5 g/l to 0.2 g/l, and the breath alcohol limit from 0.25 mg/l to 0.1 mg/l. There is a proposal calling for a near-zero or zero-tolerance policy for professional and novice drivers. The organisation argues that the only safe approach is not to drink at all when driving, as even small amounts of alcohol can impair driving ability and this is the basis of the new law.
According to the DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority), the number of beers needed to exceed the new legal limit varies depending on factors such as weight, age, sex, and metabolism. However, as a general guideline, for men with an average weight between 70 and 90 kilograms, a ‘tercio’ (a third of a litre of beer) could bring them close to the new limit, and two could put them over it. In the case of women between 50 and 70 kilograms, a single tercio could be enough to produce a positive result, due to differences in alcohol absorption. This change aims to establish a “cultural norm” of not mixing alcohol and driving by the whole population as the new limits are very strict. If passed into law by Parliament it would come into force sometime during this year.
On November 16th, “World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims”, it was revealed that there had been 32 fatalities in our province during 2025 up to this date, with 25 deaths on
major roads and seven on urban roads. Fourteen people that died on major roads included seven pedestrians, five motorcyclists, and two electric scooter riders. Meanwhile, in urban areas, the total number of fatalities were seven with two vehicle drivers, three pedestrians and two electric scooter riders. In total, four electric scooter riders and ten pedestrians had died. Additionally, 917 people had sustained minor injuries and 56 had serious injuries that required then being admitted to hospital.

Throughout Spain in the same period there were 1,024 deaths from traffic accidents. During July and August as might be expected, with the greatest number of journeys throughout Spain put at 100 million, there were 208 deaths nationwide in 207 accidents with 947 people admitted to hospital. In Andalucía there was the highest number of 47 deaths in all of the autonomous communities.
Countries that already have a 0.2 g/l limit include Sweden, Norway, Poland and Estonia. In the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia, it is forbidden to drive after consuming any amount of alcohol. For other nations, the EU has a general alignment with a limit of 0.5 g/l, although the tolerance for young drivers tends to remain lower with a threshold of 0.2 g/l, but with a proposal of zero tolerance for two years for novice drivers. It is worth noting that only Malta and the UK (excluding Scotland with 0.5 g/l) have higher limits of 0.8 g/l.

In our December magazine we detailed the special offers that Spanish banks are giving to new clients. Most of them expired in January, but after they have gauged the response there will certainly be new ones. We also commented on the three financial agencies, ‘Moody’s, Fitch’ and ‘S&P’, upgrading their benchmarks of the Spanish economy to “A3”, “A”and “A+” respectively.
On January 7th, the IBEX Spanish Stock Exchange rocketed to 17,677 points, the highest for 30 years (that was the year after the IBEX was formed). The annual increase was a whopping 49.7% despite the shocks due to Donald Trump’s erratic economic and trade policy. In 2007 just before the financial crash, the IBEX hit 15,900 points but in 2020, after Covid, it fell to just under 8,000. At the end of 2024 it was 11,600 points but when the Trump tariffs were announced on April 2nd last year it stood at 13,800. With only a slight blip it kept on going up to the key “Over 16,000 points” in late October.
Unlike some other EU countries, Spain has not been penalised by the US tariffs to the same extent. We have commented before that Spain exports no cars to the US as the shipping cost is too high to make them competitive. Spain is now attractive to foreign investors and ‘Blackrock’, the extremely important financial entity, is recommending that investors choose Spain. The US is seeing prices go up after the tariffs, and there is considerable disquiet over the way Trump is waging war with the Federal Reserve Bank to try and force down interest rates. Confidence in the dollar has gone down, falling 14% against the Euro, and the price of gold, as a safe haven, has risen to levels not seen before with a rise of over 60% last year. Investment in US companies is down because of the potential risk and there are fears that the boom in AI companies may level off because they are over valued. In general, investors in the US are very jittery and are adopting a “wait and see” policy.

Several banks in Spain have doubled their profits during 2025 which is a major reason for the rise in the stock exchange put at about 40% compared to 30% three years ago. Their special offers to new customers reflect their liquidity. Profits over 100% have been recorded which applies to Banco Santander up by 127%, Unicaja up by 120%, and BBVA up by 112%. Closely following are CaixaBank up 99%, Bankinter up 83%, and Sabadell up 80%. The five major banks increased their profits to over 33 billion euros last year, and dividends to shareholders are high.
Apart from the banks, the Indra Group company saw profits go up by 185% and they are major players in the Defence, Aerospace, and Advanced Technologies sectors with 60,000 employees. Because Spain has to increase their defence spending they have a 350 million euros contract to supply advanced surveillance drones. In midJanuary they were awarded a 1 billion euros contract until 2034 with London Transport, to run their entire ticket system, with an option to renew it until 2039.
There are still some problems in Spain in 2026 and one of them is the rising cost of purchasing and renting properties, a major barrier for young people. Also, electricity prices will not come down soon because ‘Red España’ (The Spanish National Grid entity) are buying more electricity from the most expensive co-generation power stations, who can control fluctuations better, as a means of preventing another blackout.

Time for our first monthly “pup-date” of 2026. Firstly, what a great way to start the year, especially for the dogs & cats that were adopted during December. It’s why we do what we do. Thank you to all the families that have given these previous members of PAWS-PATAS family their new beginnings
What a fun month December was for those who attended our events, all helping raise much needed funds for our furries. Thank you for your generosity & we hope you enjoyed them as much as we did
Our quiz raised 550 euros, Christmas Bingo Lunch Club 634.50 euros, monthly book sale 204 euros and 60 euros from our PAWS-PATAS information stand at the Christmas market at Delfoz del Faz
We finished 2025 with Mrs Santa and helpers arriving with turkey, potatoes, vegetables and home made gravy for the doggies on Christmas Even and Christmas Day when Santa himself arrived with turkey for the cats. How else could we end the year, making the season special for our furries?
Then we started 2026 with our annual New Year’s Day swim. What an immense success, thanks to the incredible hard work, time & effort by Brad and Ann Swift of Mojácar Forum FB group. 217 in the sea – an all time record, the oldest being Jim Gray at the grand age of 90 and Anais Van De Bleeken the youngest, at just 4 years old. Thank you to all those that went for a dip for a great cause, dressed up & supported the swimmers, the Town Hall for their help & to the lifeguard and paramedic who were in attendance, all organised and co-ordinated by Brad and Ann. The current total raised is 4632€ with some sponsorship money still to come. Now, Brad and Ann – breathe & take a well deserved rest. A massive thank you from all at PAWS-PATAS including our furries
More “thank you’s” to.... Donations totalling 1727.17 euros 16 kindhearted supporters who sent something via
Santa from our furries “wish list”. This is available all year round, so please visit the link if you’d like to help - https://www.amazon.es/-/en/hz/wishlist/ ls/ZE4MIQ7Z2GKO
132.50 euros from Jan’s Jewels, who continues to make beautiful jewellery/arts to sell with all donations going to PAWS-PATAS. Jewellery is on display @ our outlets, The Emerald Isle & The Snug in Mojácar
The businesses who allow us to have donation tins in their premises & to the general public who donated. A total of 400.37 euros was recently collected.
Every Sunday is “Funday” @ Zeppelin, Mojácar Playa from 9pm. Jukebox DJ-1 euro a song & all proceeds to PAWS-PATAS
5th February – Fun, Laughter & Romance at our Valentines Bingo Lunch Club @ The Snug, Mojácar Playa, 1.30pm with lunch, prize for best dressed Valentine, a short Valentine quiz and raffle
10th February - Book Sale @ Scotty’s, Mojácar Playa, between 10.30am-1pm.
And finally – thank you to every single one of you who supports us in some way, volunteering, donating goods to our shops or by attending an event.

Press release by Mojácar Townhall Mojácar Council has launched “Mojácar Responde,” (Mojácar Responds) a new mobile application designed to improve communication between residents and municipal services. This tool allows residents to easily report issues related to beaches, cleaning, street furniture, and other public services. Available free of charge on Google Play and App Store, the app also offers access to useful information about municipal services, as well as data on weather and bathing conditions at the municipality’s beaches. All of this is presented through an intuitive and easy-to-use interface.
In addition to facilitating communication with residents, “Mojácar Responde” includes an internal platform for the technical management of incidents. This tool enables municipal workers to receive notifications, record completed tasks, attach graphic documentation, and leave a record of the final status of each intervention. The system incorporates statistics modules, a viewer for geolocated incidents, filtered queries, a clock-in control for cleaning staff and a professional web platform (PGSU) with restricted access based on user profiles.
The Mayor of Mojácar, Francisco García Cerdá, highlighted that “this advancement represents a firm step towards a more accessible, modern, and efficient Local Council. We want citizens to feel heard and to have a useful, simple, and
direct tool at their fingertips to improve their surroundings.”
“Mojácar Responde not only improves the internal management of services but also reinforces the image of a municipality committed to quality, sustainability, and the experience of our visitors. It is something new, easy, and convenient, both for residents and for those who enjoy Mojácar.”
With this initiative, Mojácar Council reinforces its commitment to the continuous improvement of public services, backing modernisation, efficiency, and greater accessibility for its residents.
To start using it, citizens only need to download the “Mojácar Responde” app, register as a user and select the option corresponding to the service they wish to communicate or consult.
For the fourth consecutive year, Los Bandidos proudly supported the Mojácar Red Cross Xmas Toy Appeal, helping to ensure 40 local children received a visit from Santa Claus or the Three Kings. Throughout October, November and December, the group worked to spread festive cheer. The rest of the year donations of money, non-perishable food, toiletries and household cleaning products were made to the Red Cross food bank.
On a cold and windy 16th December, Santa and Mrs Claus, accompanied by a group of Los Bandidos, met at the Mojácar Red Cross to hand over an impressive selection of gifts. Red Cross volunteers, who provided festive carols along with wine, soft drinks, biscuits and chocolates, were overwhelmed by the generosity.
As well as keeping fit and active, Los Bandidos are passionate about supporting and integrating into the local community. The group will continue its support of the Red Cross food bank through 2026.

A woman came home from the beach to find her husband wandering around their lounge with a flip-flop in his hand. “What are you doing?” she asked. The husband replied, “Hunting flies”. “Have you killed any?” she asked. The husband replied, “Eleven – five males and six females.” The wife was intrigued. “How can you tell?” she asked. “Easy,” replied her husband. “Five were on the beer can, and the other six were on the phone!”
A man sticks his head into the hairdresser’s door and asks, “How long is the wait?” The barber replies, “Two hours”. A week later he does the same thing, and the barber replies, “An hour and a half.” The next week he asks again but still doesn’t come back for a trim. The barber tells his friend about the strange customer and describes him. His friend said, “I saw him go away last week, and walked up the road behind him!” The barber asks, “Did he go to another hairdresser?” His friend replied, “No! He walked up the street to your house, and your wife let him in!”
A famous Welsh rugby player died of old age and was met at the pearly gates. The elderly angel asked him, “Can you think of any reason why you should not enter the kingdom of Heaven?” The rugby player replied, “Well, I was playing for Wales against England one day, and I was definitely offside when I was passed the ball. The ref didn’t see – I scored a try, Gareth converted and we won the international and the trophy.”
The angel said, “That’s ok, we can let you in for a little thing like that!” The rugby player replied, “Great! I’ve always had a bit of a conscience about it, thanks St Peter!” The Angel replied, “You’re welcome boyo, St Peter is off today, I’m St David!”
A man went into his local police station and asked if he could speak to the burglar, who was in the cells, after breaking into his house the night before. The desk sergeant told it was against regulations, but he would see him in court. The man said, “It was 2 am, he found the key under the mat for the squeaky front door, made himself cheese on toast in the kitchen, then went upstairs and tripped on the top step, I need to talk to him!” The policeman again refused. The man replied, “I just want to know how he did it without waking my wife, I’ve done the same thing for years and she always wakes up!”
A mechanic was working on the cylinder head from a Jaguar car. He noticed a customer, whom he knew was a heart surgeon, waiting for the service manager. He called him over and asked, “See this engine? I’ve taken the heart out, fixed all the valves, and when I put it back together it will be good as new.” The mechanic wiped his hands on a rag and continued, “So why do I get just a small salary, and you earn a fortune, when we are both doing the same work?” The surgeon smiled at the mechanic and said, “Next time, try changing the valves with the engine running!”
Two bored casino men are working at the craps table. A very attractive blonde comes over and bets 20,000 euros on a single roll of the dice. She says to the men, “I hope you don’t mind but I feel really lucky if I have no clothes on.” She strips off completely, jumps up & down and shouts, “Come on baby, mama needs new clothes!” As the dice comes to a stop she screams, “Yes! Yes! I won! I won!” She takes her winnings and her clothes and quickly leaves. The dealers stare at each other, dumfounded. Finally one asks the other one, “What did she roll?” The second dealer replied, “I don’t know, I thought you were watching!”

An overweight man was told by his doctor that he had to lose at least 15 kilos. He saw an advert for guaranteed weight loss and signed up. Next day a young girl turned up at his door, quite attractive, with a pink tracksuit and running shoes. She had a sign on her back that said, “If you can catch me you can kiss me!” He didn’t catch her the first day, but he did everyday for the rest of the week and lost 3 kilos. She told him he could go onto the next stage of the weight loss course if he wanted to. He agreed, and on the Monday a really attractive mature blonde, with a pink bikini and running shoes turned up. She had a sign that read, “Catch me, and I’m all yours”. He caught her the second day, and the rest of the week as well, and lost another 5 kilos. She mentioned there was a further level, but he should think carefully before he asked to go on it. He rang the fitness centre and asked to go onto the level 3. The receptionist asked him if he was sure. “Absolutely”, he replied. The following Monday his doorbell rang, and there was a really muscular man, with pink shorts and running shoes. The sign round his neck read, “If I catch you, you’re mine!”
A junior PC stops a speeding driver on his first day, just as he is coming out of the police station. He arrests the driver and takes him into the station. “But, officer” the man began, “I can explain, you can’t keep me here!” The new PC tells him to shut up and puts him in a cell. After a few hours he goes to ask the driver if he would like a cup of tea. The man starts again, “Officer, you can’t keep me in here, I can explain everything, just let me go!” The PC replies, “I can’t let you go, it’s my first day, and everyone else is with the inspector at his daughter’s wedding, but at least they will be in a good mood when they come back!” The driver replied, “I know that, I kept trying to tell you, I’m the groom!”

The mafia boss asks the bookkeeper where the 10 million is and the friend asks the question in sign language. The bookkeeper denies he took the money, several times. Finally, losing his patience the mafia boss pulls out his pistol, puts it to the bookkeeper’s head and says, “Ask him one last time!” The friend, in sign language tells him, “He’ll kill you if you don’t tell us!” The bookkeeper signs back, “Ok, it is in a steel box in my cousin Enzo’s garage”. The mafia boss was getting beside himself, and screamed, “What did he say?” His friend replied, “He says you don’t have the balls……”
