It’s unlikely you would suspect that, for 10 years, he was one of the top bowlers on one of the top cricket teams in India, where cricket is what baseball is here. ‘Theology Of Grace’ Brought Samuel From Pro-Sports Career To Ministry SAMUEL/From B1 underwritten by the Syndicate Bank, headquartered in the smaller city of Udupi but with a significant presence in the larger metropolis. As bowler – the equivalent of baseball’s pitcher – Samuel led the team to national championships in country of 1.2 billion people, four times that of the U.S. “That life – it was different,” he reflected, “in that we played before 15,
20, 30,000 people. Liquor was abundant. I think that was hard for me to take at the time: My passion was for the game itself.” That detachment increased as his vocation became evident. Raised an Anglican, he was drawn to Methodism by John Wesley’s Theology of Grace: “He talked about how all are accepted by God, and we just need to respond.” He became very active in
the Methodist church in his hometown, “and that took me to places that had floods and hurricanes. I used to go with my pastor to help out. That laid the foundation for me to transition into the ministry.” The opportunity to travel national and internationally with Syndicate also broadened his perspective, and in 1981 he enrolled in Eastern Seminary in Philadelphia. “I felt called by God,” he

MOVIE/From B1 community,” said Reisen. “When I read the script, I was overpowered by how well the story flowed – and the twist at the end really shocked me.” The crew had wanted to film in the historic Middlefield School House, but when it didn’t meet specifications, Jan Bartow, president of the Middlefield Historical Association, recommended Blythewood. “And they fell in love with it,” said Reisen. “They wanted someplace that looked like it transcended generations.” The crew set to work decorating the library and the kitchen with 1970s-style props, including a phonograph, some rag dolls, and what executive producer Dan Hesse described as “kitschy teacher stuff,” turning the house into the home of Miss Stevens, a strict third-grade teacher who is visited by a former student who blames her constant raps on his knuckles for his ending up in prison. “She’s stuck in the past,” said Laura Brown, the production and costume designer. They even hung period-specific wallpaper. “I wish the designer would stick around and redecorate the place,” said Reisen. The filming began on Saturday, May 18, and wrapped Monday, May 20. got to meet a lot of people on the secular level; quite often you don’t do that,” he said. Through participating in the jail ministry, he was invited to speak to young employees at that paintball enterprise that was active for a couple of seasons behind the P&C in Hartwick Seminary. And he connected. “I was able to talk to them,” he said. “There was a lot of pain, a lot of hurt. They are the present and the future of our nation,” he said of the young men, but “they don’t have a lot of role models in their lives.” He continued, “I talked with them and shared with them that they’re not alone. They have friends. Our church is their friend. More importantly, God is their friend.” Another highpoint was developing a community garden at Tim and Tamara Iversen’s on Beaver Meadow Road, where 50-60 members of the congregation grew fresh produce for the Cooperstown Food Pantry.
Part of the impetus to move now is to be closer to daughter and son-in-law Anna and Nicholas Steinbuch, whose son, Samuel, is dealing with autism. (Liz, who served in Iraq, is in Syracuse.) The Steinbuchs and the Samuels have been active in the annual autism walk at Glimmerglass State Park. That transition will be abrupt. Rules governing Methodist clergy prevent Samuel, now 63, from keeping in touch with parishioners after he leaves. “I had people get engaged a year ago, but they’re getting married in July, so I can’t do their wedding,” he said. “If an elderly parishioner dies, I can’t even attend their funeral. The new minister has to minister to them. It’s no longer my church. That’s the hardest part.” Still, as he closed the door on cricket, he is prepared to do so now. “It’s hard to leave,” he said. “But it’s good for me and it’s good for the people – things can get stagnant after awhile.”

said, although “everybody thought I was crazy to leave a professional team and embark on this journey.” He soon had company, meeting his wife, Deb, a fellow student from Rockland, Maine. The two married in 1983. Their first daughter, Liz, was born in Philly, and by the time Anna was born – in 1986 in Syracuse – their dad had spent two years in his first pulpit, in Cortland. That same year he moved to Bainbridge, where he served until 2003, when he was called to Cooperstown, replacing the Rev. M. Lynn Synder. His goal here has been “to share the goodness of God’s love with everyone – because God loves everyone unconditionally. “If you do such a thing, you’ll go to hell – I’m not of that school,” he continued. “If you respond to God’s love, you will do the right thing.” During his decade of service, the pastor has taken particular satisfaction from outreach at Bassett Hospital, joining the Rotary Club, and serving on the village’s Bicentennial Committee. “I

Though principal photography is completed, the film won’t be finished for another four to six months, after which it will make the festival circuit rounds before being screened online. Hesse does plan to send copies to Reisen, the Historical Society and the town board. “They’ve been as unobtrusive as could be,” said Reisen. “This has been a lot of fun.”

35 Years After Riot, Starship’s Lost Guitar Turns Up In Germany GUITAR/From B1 Irwin, and the loss weighed heavily on the makers and the musician. “For years, I’d talk to Pete on the phone and he’d say, ‘I’m telling you, it’s in a closet somewhere in Germany’.” Which is exactly where it turned out to be. At the 1978 Lorelei Festival in Germany, Grace Slick was too intoxicated to come out of her hotel room. The audience rioted and rushed the stage, taking an ax to the drum kit and setting the stage on fire while the band hid behind the amps. “Pete put as much stuff as he could in the bushes and the band was rushed away in a van,” said Lieber. “When the roadie came back to collect the instruments, they were gone, and a bonfire was burning. We hoped the worst hadn’t happened, but

we didn’t know.” The Dragon was made from the same cocobolo and birdseye maple as Jerry Garcia’s “Tiger,” (also a Lieber-Irwin creation). “Pete
received the bass in August of 1977 and, a year later, it was gone.” The loss was lamented for years, until in December 2009, when Lieber posted
a thread on a Grateful Dead message board with the subject line, “Are You Kind?” – a reference to the Grateful Dead hit, “Uncle John’s Band” – asking for help finding the bass. “We didn’t want to say it was stolen in case we scared the guy off,” he said. On April 1, Lieber got a reply from Klaus Wilm, who, sure enough, had the bass in the closet of his German home. Wilm had been playing the bass in his own bands, believing it to be formerly owned by Golden Earring, whose song “Radar Love” reached #13 in the U.S. “When he got online and did his research, he found out it was stolen and
wanted to return it to Pete.” It arrived at Lieber’s shop in Oaksville in late April, where he did some repair work before shipping it to Sears. Sears, who now plays with Moonalice, re-debuted the bass at a recent Napa Valley concert. And this time, the audience stayed in their seats. As well as Tiger, Lieber also helped design and build Jerry Garcia’s “Wolf” guitar, as well as a bass for Phil Lesh, who will play with Furthur at Doubleday Field on Saturday, July 14. Lesh will not, however, be bringing his Lieber-built bass for a visit. “He sold the one I made him long ago,” said Lieber.
