EDITIONS OF MAY 29-30, 2014 – President Barack Obama was whisked in and out of Cooperstown Wednesday, May 21. Here for a little over an hour, he addressed a crowd of local VIPs in the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Hall of Plaques on a plan that seeks to encourage tourists from elsewhere to visit the U.S.

eDITIONS OF nov. 6-7. 2014 – An intense outpouring of community grief after Oneonta Mayor Dick Miller’s untimely death on Saturday, Oct. 25, was manifest at his memorial service Sunday, Nov. 2, in the main theater at Foothills Performing Arts Center. The 640 seats were filled, as were 100 chairs added on the sides, plus mourners stood in the aisles and sat in the Atrium to watch the proceedings on close-circuit TV. Miller, 71, whose initiatives included stabilizing Foothills, seeing the Bresee’s renovation through to completion, initiating numerous economicdevelopment concepts, and implementing a five-year budgeting process that kept City Hall financially stable while most Upstate cities floundered. was in the first year of his second term.
EDITIONS OF JULY 31-AUG. 1, 2014 – Happy days returned to Cooperstown on the Baseball Hall of Fame’s 75th anniversary Induction Weekend, July 25-27, when, with former Yankees Manager Joe Torre leading the roster, the biggest crowd turned out (50,000) since the Ripken-Gwynn event (84,000, the record) in 2007. Also inducted were Bobby Cox, Tom Glavin, Tony La Russa, Greg Maddux and Frank Thomas. Already, rooms were being booked for Induction 2020, Yankee Derek Jeter’s first year of eligibility.

EDITIONS OF DEC. 25-26, 2014 – Elation reigned among fracking opponents when Governor Cuomo announced Wednesday, Dec. 17, that the controversial natural-gas-extraction method will be banned in New York State, ending a fiveyear battle in which Otsego Countians – Sustainable Otsego’s Adrian Kuzminski, retired Mobil executive vice president Lou Allstadt and Otsego 2000 President Nicole Dillingham among them – played a substantial statewide role. Here, Dillingham hugs the Butternut Valley Alliance’s Bob Eklund at a celebration in Cafe Ommegang; the brewery’s Communications Director Larry Bennett and President Simon Thorpe were early players in raising the alarm locally. At the end of June, a state Court of Appeals affirmed the Town of Middlefield’s fracking ban, another victory for anti-fracking forces.

EDITIONS OF JAN. 2-3, 2014 – Always a crowd-stunner, the Cosmic Karma Fire troupe wowed First Night parade-goers on Oneonta’s Main Street on New Year’s Eve. It turned out to be Oneonta’s last New Year’s parade (for now), as the First Night Committee switched the cavalcade to the Fourth of July and this year is holding all activities under the one roof of Foothills Performing Arts Center.
WEEK 2 EDITIONS OF JAN. 9-10, 2014 – Cooperstown, usually a stand-offish operator amid Otsego County’s challenges, took center stage at the Otsego County Chamber’s traditional State of the State breakfast Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Foothills, when Mayor Jeff Katz keynoted, outlining his plans for the village and detailing its national attractions. “Cooperstown’s myth is great, but its reality is even better,” he said. Katz and Oneonta Mayor Miller, right, also launched a number of rare collaborations.
EDITIONS OF JAN. 16-17, 2014 – Sandy Mathes and Elizabeth Horvath were all smiles on Friday, Jan. 10, when state Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, introduced Mathes as Otsego County’s “single point of contact” for economic development, the result of a process that began on March 15, 2012, at The Otesaga with the first of two “Seward Summits” on economic development. Mathes, the former Greene County economic developer, emerged as CEO in the county Industrial Development Agency’s $3 million effort to revive job growth. Horvath, a Cooperstown resident, Harvard grad and former business consultant in New York City, was introduced as COO. The first year has featured making Pony Farm Commerce Park “shovel ready,” obtaining an option on a second park in Richfield Springs, and preparing a $30 million plan to expanding high-speed Internet countywide. In recent days, the IDA obtained state funding for a market study for Oneonta’s D&H rail yards.

EDITIONS OF JAN. 23-24, 2014 – Ten months after the Route 11C bridge over the Susquehanna River at Hartwick Seminary was hit by a too-large truck, a new span was opened at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17. The March before, the 80-year-old trestle had been condemned, requiring a 15-mile detour in traffic between Route 28 (Cooperstown Dreams Park) and Route 33, (Brewery Ommegang) for the 2013 tourism season.

EDITIONS OF FEB. 13-14, 2014 – The Otesaga, the county’s foremost hospitality venue, welcomed a new chef, Jim Perillo, left, a downstate native who VP/ General Manager Jim Miles, right, had met while managing Peddler’s Village in Bucks County, Pa. Perillo, whose experience included a Navy stint and head chef at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, vowed to bring more locally grown foods onto the menu.

WEEK 9 EDITIONS OF FEB. 27-28, 2014 – A heat lamp in the “baby barn” casts a warm glow on Javier Flores and Ilyssa Berg, who pitched a tent on a Town of Burlington hillside seven years ago to begin building a 70-goat cheesemaking operation that today is the poster child of the growing value-added farm products industry in Otsego County.

EDITIONS OF MARCH 13-14, 2014 – State Education Commissioner John B. King, Jr., participates in Kristin Butler’s math class Wednesday, March 5, at Cooperstown Elementary School. He had heard CCS Superintendent of Schools C.J. Hebert discuss promising results of applying Common Core concepts, and wanted to see for himself. Weil on Friday, March 14, convene the first of two meetings with area artists to discuss merging Cooperstown’s two arts groups into one. EDITIONS OF MARCH 27-28, 2014 – Demolition of Southside Oneonta’s landmark Neptune Diner, which father-son owners Paul and Tasi Karabinis closed at the end of 2013, began Monday, March 24. The partners cited rising food prices as the impetus. Burrell’s Excavating had the contract. Since, a strip mall has been rising on the lot across from Southside Mall’s entrance. The first announced tenant is Aspen Dental, the national chain.

WEEK 15 EDITIONS OF APRIL 10-11, 2014 – In advance of Earth Day on April 22, O.G. “Art” Dunham, CEO of Opto Generic Devices, Van Hornesville, gave an interview on the Adaptive Climate Controller, about the size of a desk calendar, that attaches to a HVAC unit to reduce the “ramping up” of the heating and cooling system. “It eliminates that blast of hot or cold air that comes up when the furnace turns on,” said Durham. “It starts up gradually to match the air flow with the temperature.” More efficient gas or oil burners run at 15 watts instead of 313. Bassett, Springbrook, SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College have retrofitted systems with Dunham’s device.
EDITIONS OF APRIL 3-4, 2014 – It was a week of transition, as Bassett Healthcare announced that Dr. Vance Brown, chief medical officer at MaineHealth, Portland, would be succeeding Dr. William Streck, Bassett president/ CEO for 30 years. Since arriving, Dr. Brown has reached out to mollify neighbors who have complained for years of the impacts of living next to a large institution, and has made some first steps to Vance Brown, left, and Mike Long decentralize the eight-county organization, renting space in Utica and releasing a study to employees that suggests moving pediatrics and other specialties to Oneonta. That same edition, Oneonta’s first city manager, Mike Long, announced he was retiring after just 18 months. The decision led to months of rancor after the city Charter Commission that had created the position just two years previously asked for a review of charter implementation.

Molly’s son, John, who was raised in Oneonta, had been married to Kazumi Haga, although he is now living in San Franciso. Obaa-san – grandmother in Japanese – spent six days in Toyko with the Hagas, John’s former inlaws, and had a chance to get to know Shizu, who is the daughter of Marika’s sibling Kenji.

EDITIONS OF MAY 8-9, 2014 – Rich Murphy, former Oneonta Town Board member and retired county Board of Representatives member, is driven to Oneonta Little League’s Doc Knapp field on Saturday, April 26, where the 2014 Little League season was dedicated in his honor, and the Minor League Field named in his honor. Murphy, who is fighting cancer, retired at the end of the season as coach of the Community Bank team, which he coached for 30 years.

EDITIONS OF MAY 16-17, 2014 – Lou Allstadt, the retired Mobil executive vice president who is also serving on the Cooperstown Village Board, shared his $2 million plans for sensitive modernization of 22 Main, the Village Hall, which was donated to the village by Robert Sterling Clark in memory of his mother, Elizabeth Scriven Clark. Allstadt had founded the Friends of 22 Main, but on his election turned that group’s presidency over to Lang Keith, the retired judge. Allstadt, who continued his interest on the Village Board’s Streets & Buildings Committee, failed to obtain a state CFA grant this year, but a fundraising component may be forthcoming.
EDITIONS OF MAY 29-30, 2014 – Amid the perennial graduation of almost 2,000 seniors from Hartwick College and SUNY Oneonta, these four stood out: The Mele quadruplets from Long Island – Grace, Bobby, Danny and Erin, who had arrived at Hartwick four years earlier to much fanfare. Together through college, the four were now splitting up to pursue post-graduate specialties. “Someone’s always got your back,” said Danny of the benefits of going to college with siblings.

WEEK 22 EDITIONS OF JUNE 5-6, 2014 – It’s been quite a year for Allstadt, seen here in lower right answering a query from Sustainable Otsego moderator Adrian Kuzminski during a program at the Otsego County Courthouse in early June on the state’s plan to achieve energy sustainability by 2050. During the program, Allstadt revealed Village of Cooperstown plans to build a solar farm; at its December meeting, the trustees approve a contract with Solomon Energy to craft a proposal that would allow the village to participate in solar projects anywhere within its state-defined “load zone,” which stretches from Schoharie County to the Canadian border. In time of crisis – from flood to nuclear emergency – this room would have been set up with long tables seating experts in logistics, response and other specialties. The tour followed news that the bunker is one site identified by SUNY Oneonta as eligible for Governor Cuomo’s Start-Up NY economic-development program tied to public and private colleges.

EDITIONS OF JULY 24-25, 2014 – Arc Otsego’s Lynn Sessions is surrounded by artists from the Main View Gallery as the 10th anniversary “Voice!� art exhibit opened Friday, July 18, at SUNY Oneonta’s MartinMullen Gallery. At year’s end, Arc lost the grant that makes the Main View possible, but was seeking ways to continue an artistic outlet for its clients. EDITIONS OF JULY 10-11, 2014 – Royalty from Cherry Valley – Miss Demeanor and Miss Understood – were again big hits at the Springfield Fourth of July Parade, among the nation’s oldest, when it marked its 100th year.

EDITION OF Aug. 7-8, 2014 – Samantha Smith and Blayke Conklin, visiting family in Morris, fly down the Super Slide in the heart of the midway at the Otsego County Fair, which opened Sunday, July 26.

EDITIONS OF JULY 17-18, 2014 – Author Jim Greiner, Herkimer County historian and president of the Friends of Historic Herkimer County, gives a tour of Chester Gillette’s cell in the former Herkimer County Jail. Gillette’s 1906 murder of Grace Brown inspired Theodore Dreiser’s “An American Tragedy,� which in turn inspired Tobias Picker’s opera of the same name, which was staged over the summer at the Glimmerglass Festival.

WEEK 33 Sisters Gialina and Adrianna Ploutz, Oneonta, enjoy the multi-million-dollar view from the Skybox Lounge of Hillside Commons, Newman Development Corp.’s 320student housing complex that was officially opened Tuesday, Aug. 12, with a ribbon-cutting and tours. The building is the largest addition to the City of Oneonta’s tax base in a quarter-century.

EDITIONS OF Aug. 29-30, 2014 – Plans surfaced that Perry V. Ferrara (inset), proprietor of the Heroes of Baseball Wax Museum, and partner Tom Langan are proposing a four-story, 22-unit residential hotel at 124 Main St., Cooperstown, in the former TJ’s Restaurant. “The developers will create an upscale building whose exterior will clearly reflect the look and feel of ‘America’s Most Perfect Village’,” according to plans filed at Village Hall. “The added height of the building will be comparable to that of neighboring structures.” The developers had hoped to see construction complete by the fall of 2015, but after initial meetings with the village Planning Board and ZBA, went back to the drawing board with hopes of refiling their proposal by next spring.

EDITIONS OF Aug. 22-23, 2014 – With the 2014-15 academic year about to begin, the SUNY Oneonta team that is creating the only undergraduate curriculum in perhaps the nation sat down to explain how a multi-disciplinary approach, and collaboration with SUNY Buffalo’s computer lab, has allowed the local college to get ahead of any competition. EDITIONS OF SEPT. 4-5, 2014 – The ALS “Ice Bucket” Challenge swept Otsego County as it did the rest of the nation, and Baseball Hall of Fame Chairman Jane Forbes Clark, President Jeff Idelson and all the staff on duty Thursday, Aug. 28, stood on the steps of 25 Main and had buckets of ice water dumped over them. The Hall had been “challenged” by the Football Hall in Canton, Ohio, and in turn challenged Bassett Hospital. Bassett CEO/President Vance Brown responded in kind. Even state Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, was caught up in ice-bucket fever.

EDITIONS OF SEPT. 25-26, 2014 – It surfaced that Cooperstown’s Colin Lassiter, 6, seen here with his sister, Chloe, 8, in July was first to identify a tiny jellyfish, Craspedacusta sowerbyi, in Otsego Lake. He spotted a school while fishing with his dad and sister off Council Rock. Over the summer, Chip Northrup saw a school of the invasives near Fairy Spring, and Martin Tillapaugh on the other side of the lake near Five Mile Point, indicating the jellyfish, which are too small to pose threats to humans, have infested the whole lake.

Alex Cross is actually Warren Edson of Milford. The other local wrestler was Steve Meade, Edson’s boyhood friend.
EDITION OF OCT. 2-3, 2014 – While Oneonta Common Council was considering allowing city residents to raise chickens, “Daddy Al” Dicka agreed to show off his flock in the Town of Oneonta, which he tends with the help of grandaughters, Jade Dicka and little Adara Martinoli. A motion to amend the municipal code was hotly debated at the Oct. 7 Council meeting, but was tabled. The headline read, “Chickens Don’t Fly.”

editionS of OCT. 23-24, 2014 – With the Otsego County Board of Representatives holding back from participation in the IDA’s $3 million “single point of contact” initiative, the new IDA chairman, Bob Hanft, met Thursday, Oct. 9, with the board’s key Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, proposing three smallbusiness forums to help set goals for a consensus program moving forward. Within a month, though, the effort had fallen apart. The county created a Department of Planning, Solid Waste & Economic Development to proceed independently. Hanft, of Pierstown, a former J.P. Morgan banker and past chair of the Hartwick College trustees, succeeded Sharon Oberriter, retired Cooperstown Bat proprietor. It was happenstance he was there at all: A friend had texted him as his shift as assistant manager at the Shoe Dept in Southside Mall was ending, asking him to pick up cigarette-making supplies on the way home.

Brad, an assistant general counsel with J.P. Morgan, had been attracted to that open hillside since riding back and forth to Cooperstown from his family’s home on Ainslie Road, Town of Richfield, and acquired the site several years ago. He began working for the Oliver Winery in Bloomington while a student at the Indiana University Law School. After marrying Lynn, a teacher on Long Island, the couple made their dream come true. Pail Shop is joining the Cooperstown Beverage Trail.
editions of NOV. 20-21, 2014 – Oneonta’s native Cuyle Carvin’s acting career appears on the brink of taking off, as a string of guest appearances on top TV shows continues. At left, he appears as Brett, a mercenary brought in to help the “NCIS: Los Angeles” team on the CBS show’s third season. On Dec. 21, he appeared on the top-rated “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” An OHS and Hartwick College grad working in Southside Mall, Carvin answered a newspaper ad for an extra in a movie being filmed in Delaware County, and things just followed from that.

editions of NOV. 13-14, 2014 – After a year where 40-some trees were felled along Cooperstown’s Main Street and a $2 million sidewalk project hindered access to stores, a new tree was a particuarly sweet present when Sal Grigoli arrived at his Sal’s Restaurant & Pizzeria on Nov. 5, his birthday. That day, 17 replacement trees were planted. The sidewalk project, which seeks to clean up runoff into Otsego Lake and the Susquehanna through the use of rain gardens and porous asphalt, was completed on the north side and from Chestnut Street to Pioneer Alley. Central Paving of Frankfort, the contractor, plans to complete the work past the Baseball Hall of Fame by Memorial Day.

The odds of having identical triplets are one in 60,000. And although the Tallman family of Hartwick and the Catan family of Oneonta also have triplets, the O’Briens’ are the only set of the same gender.

editions of DEC. 18-19, 2014 – After years of scaling back activities, the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce’s new interim executive director, Matt Hazzard, came up with a new one, and it was a hit: Rockin’ Around Cooperstown Ugly Sweater Run on Saturday, Dec. 13. More than 90 runners and walkers, and spectators aplenty, enjoyed the fun. Here, Melissa Swislosky, Mount Upton, led the women, finishing in 27:24; Oneonta’s Kyle Breier took top honors at 25:41. Revellers then shifted to The Farmers’ Museum Candlelight Evening, which, helped by relatively mild weather, attracted more than 2,500 – a recent record – to enjoy the Otsego County tradition.
