The event was packed, with The Beekman Boys, Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, selling out their latest, “Beekman 1802: Heirloom Vegetables” in the first 15 minutes. “Our take on the sweet potato casserole is going to be the most used this holiday season,” said

Shopping Downtown, She Encounters Serendipity LOCAL/From B1 And sure, I could have found it online – if I’d known it existed – and had it shipped to my mailbox, but really, where’s the fun in that? “Shopping locally is fun,” said Jim Havener, the new owner of the Green Toad Bookstore, 198 Main, as he wrapped up my purchase in festive paper. “I had a customer come in earlier and who told me she was buying

here instead of at Barnes & Nobel because it made her feel like she was part of the community.” I’ll confess, I’m not one for planning what I want to buy as gifts. I like to look around, and find something so unexpected that I can just imagine the look on my friend’s face as they open it. And Oneonta, it seems, is the place to do just that. At Razzle Dazzle, 248 Main, every inch floor-toceiling is packed with niftygifties, from kitchen gadgets to wooly gloves to kid’s toys. “We come here for the kitchen stuff,” said Mary Southern, Oneonta. “You find things in here that you can’t find anywhere else!” Like the cute Anne Taintor “You Be Thelma, I’ll Be Louise” socks that screamed my friend Liz’s name, or the beautiful purses owner Debbie North knits by hand. “I labor over them and each one is one-of-akind,” she said. “People ask, ‘why don’t you sell them on Etsy?’ But I want to see who buys them. I was given a gift of creativity, and it’s not
for me to hold on to.” (Is it still Christmas shopping if you buy a present for yourself?) Handmade, local and vintage are the biggest trend in both Oneonta and across the country. “You can’t find vintage pins like these in stores anymore,” said Cindy Staffin, owner of Transitions Boutique, 4 Deitz St., who had a whole display of vintage rhinestone broaches. “People come in looking for older pieces like this.” “I have one just like this,” said Kathy Polley, a Transitions’ clerk, pointing to a glittery red and gold Christmas tree pin. “I bought it at Bresees’, and I still have it.” And although Bresees’ was gone before I arrived in Oneonta eight years ago, I could still recreate some of the experience by going into Theresa’s Emporium, 155 Main, including passing by the old turnstile Chip Klugo, who redeveloped the former department store into shops and apartments, has installed in the hallway. Much of Theresa Cyzeski’s merchandise is Amer-
ican-made and Fair Trade, and although the Grumpy Cat plush toy I bought my niece Melody isn’t locally made, as Theresa wrapped it up for me she asked about my upcoming wedding. No one at any store in Albany or Binghamton – certainly not at a cyberstore – would know enough about me to ask. It was nice to have a conversation that didn’t consist of just “Sign the receipt” and “Have a good day.” “Oneonta is for the unconventional,” said Anthony Robinson of The Museum Skate Shop, 201 Main. “We’ve got everything downtown.” And as I walked to my car, arms loaded with bags, I felt very posh, like I was strolling down Fifth Avenue. But better still, I had been out in my town, talking with friends and neighbors, getting some fresh air, and taking time to explore what Oneonta really has to offer. And that’s the kind of feeling you just can’t buy online.

granddaughters and lots of friends with young children, and this book is a good inspiration,” said Betty Vogelaar, who was up from New Jersey visiting friends for the holidays and purchasing two copies of Membrino’s “I Want to Be a Ballerina.” “And these are for me!” said Christine LaBurre, Cooperstown, who purchased Falk’s “Barns of Cooperstown” and Atwell’s “From Fly Creek.” “I love that these authors are my hometown people, people I see and talk too.” Over 80 books total were sold during the four-hour event. “We want to promote what talented local people we have in this region,” said deBruin.

IN MEMORIAM Georgia Bresee Couden, 87; Counselor, Family Therapist ONEONTA – Georgia Bresee Couden, a counselor and family therapist who practiced for almost four decades in Oneonta, passed away on Nov. 23, 2014, in Jamaica Plains, Mass. Born Oct. 3, 1927, in Danbury, Conn., to Dr. George DeWitt and Caroline (Frank) Wight, Georgia earned degrees from Barnard College (1948) and Hunter College of Social Work (1973). She ran her private practice in Oneonta from 1973 to 2010. In 1951, Georgia married Robert L. Bresee. Together, they had five children, Kathryn Bresee, Newton, Mass., Susan (Stephen) Joseph, Pleasant Hill, Calif., Dana (Don) Keeth, Belmont, Mass., Elisabeth (Michael) Brittin, McLean, Va., and Rob (Shira Lucky) Bresee, San Francisco, and eight
grandchildren. Predeceased by her two sisters and two brothers, Georgia became matriarch Georgia B. Couden for numerous nieces, nephews, their extended families, and Patty Sypher, long-term Fresh Air Fund child. In 1976, Georgia married James S. Couden Jr., further expanding her family network to include stepsons, James (Jane) Couden, Oneonta, the late Jack Couden, Patrick (Angie) Couden, Queen Creek, Ariz., and four step-grandchildren. Georgia was predeceased by her former husband and her second husband.
Leslie Quackenbush, 89; WWII Vet ONEONTA – Leslie T. Quackenbush, 89, a World War II veteran and ECD Bendix retiree, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, at Fox Hospital. He was born on Aug. 21, 1925, in Oneonta, the son of Henry and Eloise (Congdon) Quackenbush. He married Helen Mead on Feb. 14, 1944, in Oneonta. After World War II, he joined ECD Bendix, retiring in 1984 after 30 years. Les was a member of St. Mary’s Church. He enjoyed woodworking, and was a wrestling fan. In addition to his wife of 70 years, he is survived by
his daughters, Linda Carr and her companion, Peter Krebs, of Goodyear Lake, and Debbie Lipitz and her husband, Gary, of Chenango Bridge; his grandchildren, Teresa Webster, Nicole Krajnyk, Adam Lipitz, and eight great-grandchildren. Also, a brother, Henry Quackenbush and his wife, Carol, of Oneonta, and a sister, Janet Bobnick of Richfield Springs, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Arlene Scanlon. Arrangements were entrusted to the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Shirlene M. Ouimet, 66; Spent 30 Years With Job Corps ONEONTA – Shirlene M. Ouimet, 66, who worked for the Oneonta Job Corps for 34 years, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014, at the Chestnut Park Nursing Home. Shirlene was born on May 12, 1948 in Oneonta, the daughter of the George W. and Ann M. Oliver. She married Alfred H. Ouimet on Aug. 3, 1996, in Oneonta. She was an assistant in the Job Corps’ Human
Resources Department for more than three decades. Prior to that, she worked for the city Shirlene Housing Ouimet Authority and Urban Renewal. She also worked as a secretary at Southside Mall and Bettiol Fuel. She enjoyed traveling and attending Bobby Vinton
concerts and was a member of his fan club for many years. She also enjoyed going to Lake George. Shirlene is survived by her loving husband, Fred; her daughters, Melissa (Todd) Ewen, Cynthia Doroski and her partner, Herb, and Barbara Snyder; her grandchildren, Emma and Jack Ewen, Christina and Kimberly Jones, Tony Doroski, Amber Roe, Brittany and Stephanie Jenkins, Jeff Moore, several great grand-
children and many friends. A funeral mass was Monday, Dec. 1, in St. Mary’s Church, with the Rev. David Mickiewicz, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons. Memorial contributions may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Hwy. 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326. Arrangements were entrusted to the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Michael H. Jennings, 39; Archaeologist Played Role In Deepwater Horizon Cleanup COOPERSTOWN – Michael H. Jennings, 39, a Cooperstown native and archaeologist who helped determine damage to cultural resources from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, passed away on Nov. 21, 2014, in Albuquerque, N.M., where he lived. He was born June 3, 1975, at Bassett Hospital, son of Ronald and Edith (Ainslie) Jennings. He graduated from Cooperstown Central High School in
1994, attended Tompkins County Community College, and in 2000 graduated magna cum Michael H. laude from Jennings SUNY Potsdam with degrees in anthropology, archeology and business. He worked for Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, the New York State
Irene Wilfeard, 90; ‘War Bride’ Moved To U.S. With Husband COOPERSTOWN – Irene Ada Wilfeard, 90, a proud “war bride” who met her GI husband in the U.K. during World War II, passed away Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 2014, at the Focus Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. Born on March 19, 1924, in West London, England, she was the daughter of Bernard and Irene Edith Childs. During WWII, she met Herbert B. Wilfeard. They married on June 2, 1945, at St. Dunstan’s Church, London. She joined her husband in the U.S. a year later, becoming a citizen in 1956. Living in the Cooperstown area, she worked for the Campbell Estate as head of housekeeping for Dorothy and Joseph Campbell and later for Judy and W.T. Sampson Smith. She then was a nurse’s aide at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home. She was member of the Native Daughters of Cooperstown, the Pierstown Grange and the Fly Creek
Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary. Her family will always remember her stories of growing up in England and dealing with the hardships of World War II. Her fondest memory was being formally introduced to the Queen Mother. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Nedena and Ronald Swift of Worcester, Holly and Edward Pearsall of Newport, and Peggy and Alan Basile of Cooperstown; two sons and three daughters-inlaw, David M. and Elizabeth Wilfeard of Cooperstown, Bradley K. and Kathleen Wilfeard of Burlington Flats, and Judy P. Wilfeard of Massachusetts; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. A graveside service will be offered in the spring in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home.

Museum, and Lone Tree Archaeology & Environmental before joining HDR Inc. in Albuquerque in 2007, where he was archaeological project manager/marketing director of cultural resources. His work took him to the South Pacific, where he discovered a previously unknown Japanese bunker; Alaska’s Denali National Park, and White Sands, N.M. He led an archaeological survey along the Rio Grande that discovered 22
archeological sites. After the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion, he was a project manager in Louisiana, then co-lead for the states of Alabama, Florida and Mississippi, assisting the Shoreline Clean-up Technique (SCAT) team. He authored many articles that were published in several archaeological digests. He was a member of the American Cultural Resources Association and Lambda Alpha National Collegiate Honors Society for Anthro-
pology, and was a cultural resource consultant for New Mexico’s Historic Preservation Office. He helped organize toy drives on the To’Hajiilee Native American Reservation, and recently coordinated a back-to-school drive there. He was also active in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. He enjoyed restoring antiques and building furniture, and was an avid sports fan and talented home brewer. He enjoyed travel-
ling throughout the U.S. and South America. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Teresa and Peter Russo of Cooperstown; his nephew Nicholas and niece Maeghan. Calling hours are at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Cooperstown Methodist Church, followed at 2 p.m. by a service in the sanctuary.
