A chopper flying repeatedly over Cooperstown one Wednesday in October reminded folks: The state police Canine Unit has been quietly training dozens of dogs a year from its facility on Chicken Hill Farm Road since 2000, when a Clark Foundation grant enabled construction of a state-of-the-art facility there. That day, K9 trainees were being acclimated to riding in helicopters.

o many choices, but Diff knows he has to make the right one. He sniffs a suitcase, a box, then goes back to the suitcase to claw at it. It’s where the synthetic heroin is hidden, and trainer Rob Turnbull of Oneonta’s Troop C, rewards him with his toy. “They do it all for the toy,” said Turnbull. “It’s how we train them to sniff out the drugs – we put the toy in the box, then later, we put the drugs in with the toy, then just the drugs.” Diff is one of 14 dogs training at the Canine Training Academy on Chicken Farm Hill Road, just up East Lake Road. For 20 weeks, he and Turnbull will train, sleep and play together in the 18-bed-

Sock Hop Turns Doo-Wop To Good Purpose SOCK HOP/From B1 Carla’s daughter Caryn was a performer, and Tom Pondolfino, Jeff Wood, Mary Francis Perricone and Judy Pitel joined the lineup. Caryn’s rendition of “Build Me Up Buttercup” is a crowd favorite, and Jeff adds some country flair to “On The Wings of the Dove.” “Mary Francis grew up singing doo-wop on the street of Brooklyn with her dad,” said Balnis. “Jeff Wood brings a taste of country to every song he does, and when Tom Pondolfino
puts on his patent leather shoes, you know he means business!” The performers aren’t paid, so all the money raised goes directly to the charity. “We ask the performers to pick charities that mean something to them,” she said. “That’s how we pay them.” The Sock Hop has raised funds for the American Legion, the Oneonta Free Medical Clinic, the Oneonta Fire Department, Main Street Oneonta (MSO), food banks, Family Services and hospice organizations. “We
just did one that helps find new homes for the dogs of hospice patients,” Balnis said. “And two dogs got adopted that night!” But it’s not just the charity that benefits from a night of boogying. “We’re helping so many people,” said Carla. “The venue gets the sales from the bar and food, the charity gets the door, and we’ve even had kids use us for their community service projects.” And though the Sock Hops only cost $5 to get in, they’ve raised over $40,000 so far. “We didn’t realize
how starved this area was for affordable entertainment,” said Balnis. The next Sock Hop will is Saturday, Nov. 8 at the First United Methodist Church, with proceeds going to RoboKronos, and the church’s teen handbell choir and summer camp fund. “We hosted one four years ago, and it was so successful, we’re bringing it back,” said Gardner. The event will also feature authentic diner fare, a silent auction, a huluhoop and costume contests. “We have over 140 items, including dinner gift certificates, concert tickets, even a weekend in a cabin in the mountains,” said Gardner. Costumes are a big part of the event for both the performers and the dancers. “There’s one older gentleman who comes out wearing his original letter jacket!” she said. “And the parents who bring their kids, they go all out on the costumes.” But at the end of the night, Balnis knows it’s not about the money or the

IN MEMORIAM Bill Sherman, 91; Served OSS, Foreign Service; County ONEONTA — William “Bill” Sherman, 91, an OSS officer during World War II, Foreign Service officer and retired director of the Otsego County Probation Department, died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014. Born in Cooperstown, he lived most of his life in Oneonta, dividing his later years with Hilton Head Island, S.C. He served in World War II with the Office of Strategic Service, forerunner of the CIA, in Europe from 1943 to 1946. After the war, he graduated
from Hamilton College and the Institute of Advanced International Studies, Geneva, Switzerland. As a Foreign Service officer in the State Department, he was assigned to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, then Beirut, Baghdad, Cairo and Washington D.C. In 1952, his brother and only sibling, Foster Sherman, an Air Force pilot, was killed in the Korean War. William returned to Oneonta to be with his mother, Hazel Foster Sherman. He started his
Rev. Joseph Fiske, 92, Morris; Served At Elm Park, First UM MORRIS – The Rev. Joseph Arthur Fiske, 92, who served in many pulpits, including Elm Park and First United Methodist churches in Oneonta, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford, where he had lived with his wife, Sarita (Runion) Fiske since April 2014. Joe was born on April 13, 1922, in Dallas, Pa., to Eugene and Alice (Worthington) Fiske. He attended Dallas Borough High School, Wyoming Seminary, Brothers College and Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, N.J., and was ordained in the Methodist Church in 1949. In addition in serving many churches in northeastern Pennsylvania and the Otsego County area, Joe was also a member of the Wyoming Conference Education Committee and the Sky Lake Board of Directors. In retirement, he was active in the Morris United Methodist Church, where he
was a founding member of the Eco-Justice group. An avid fisherman and conservationist, he shared his love of the wild through his bird carvings, writings and photography programs. He also helped found the Morris Farmers’ Market.. In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by his children, Alice L. Fiske of Davenport, Joel R. Fiske and wife Donna of Savona, and April F. Jones and husband Eric of Granby, Conn.; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and brothers- and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth L. Cyphers of Dallas, and brother, Lester W. Fiske of Darby, Pa. A celebration of Joe’s life was Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Morris church. Memorial donations may be mae to the Morris United Methodist Church, Morris Emergency Squad or Catskill Area Hospice. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

own business, W.F. Sherman & Associates, an asset management company. As a parallel career, he volunteered as a probation officer and rose to director of the department. Following his retirement, he worked part-time in the golf departments of the Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes Companies in Hilton Head, S.C. He was a passionate golfer and longtime member of the Oneonta Country Club. He also loved hiking, walking, and just sitting outdoors with friends. Up until his last
day he lived independently in his own house, and most days drove himself to Fox Healthlinks to exercise in the pool. He had many friends throughout the world, though most had already left it. Chief among them was Caroline, his dear wife of 55 years. They had their differences, but were always there for one another, especially during Caroline’s final three years at the Fox Nursing Home, where William visited her every day. She preceded him in death by two years.
Muriel J. Close, 90, War Bride ONEONTA – Muriel Joy Close, 90, Oneonta, a native of Great Britain who met her husband in the British Isles during World War II, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014 at the Chestnut Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta. She was born Jan. 30, 1924, in Westminster, London. During World War II, Muriel was a radar plotter in the Royal Air Force. While on leave in Northern Ireland, Muriel met her future husband, Walter Robert Close, in a movie house. After that first meeting they became inseparable and were married on July 25, 1944, in Kilkeel, County Down, Northern Ireland. Walter, a Delaware County native, predeceased her in 1990.

FLY CREEK – Susan Strickland Rodd, 72, who after her husband’s death in 1977 co-wrote “Beyond Loss: A Practical Guide Through Grief to Meaningful Life,” died peacefully in Cooperstown on Oct. 28, 2014. She was 72. She is survived by her five daughters, Kimberly (Robert) Tucker of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., Emily (Matthew) Carter of Topsham, Maine, Eva Rodd of Portland, Maine, Abigail (Joel) Rodd of Cooperstown, and Amanda (Mark) Rodd of New York City; her brother Edward (Arlene) Strickland of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren, Charles, James, Ella, Annie, Elliot, Esme, and Leo; and her step-father, Al-
bert Berkowitz of Amherst, Mass.. Susan was born on June 16, 1942, in Menlo Park, Calif. She studied acting and theater at Catholic University, Washington, D.C. and the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, New York. In 1964, she appeared in Peter Bogdanovich’s Off-Broadway revival “Once in a Lifetime.” She married architect Joseph Rodd and they moved to Pound Ridge. She lost her husband to cancer in 1977 and, as a young widow, had to find a way to begin life again. In 1985, she moved to Cooperstown and later Fly Creek. Susan was an accomplished writer and musician who taught piano lessons
Robin Arnold, 61; R.N., B&B Owner COOPERSTOWN – Robin Joy (Ramburg) Arnold, 61, an R.N. who ran a B&B in Cooperstown, passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, at Otsego Manor, after an extended illness. She was born on Jan. 30, 1953, to William and Joyce Ramburg of Hancock. She graduated from Hancock Central School in 1971 from from Albany Medical Center School of Nursing in 1975 as an R.N. Her career took her to Wilson Medical Center, Johnson City, Fox Hospital, Oneonta, and Bassett Hospital. She also worked at SUNY Oneonta and for personal home care services. She later ran a B&B in Cooperstown. Robin was married to Stephen Craig Arnold in 1977. Surviving are her three daughters, Kirsten Ar-
nold of Cooperstown, Katie (Arnold) Bidwell and her husband, John, of Albany, and Kara Arnold of Cooperstown NY; her grandchild Joshua Bidwell; her sister Linda Ramburg; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and some very close friends. Robin was predeceased by her parents. Calling hours will be 11noon Friday, Nov. 7, at Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock, followed by a funeral service at noon.
