n 9/11, just a few short hours after they watched the World Trade Center towers collapse, the Right Rev. Mark Sisk, then the Episcopal bishop of New York, and his archdeacon Michael Kendall waited at Roosevelt Hospital. “We were waiting to give comfort to the injured,” said Sisk, who with his wife, Karen, attended the 9/11 ecumenical community service at Cooperstown Methodist Church, marking the 13th anniversary of the national tragedy. “But nobody came. The longer that went on, the more ominous it seemed.”

Then a journalist arrived. “He asked us, ‘Where was God when the towers fell?’” Sisk recalled. “And Michael replied, ‘God is in that pile with the suffering and the dying.’ I thought that was the perfect answer.” The next day, Bishop Sisk put on his clerical gear and drove to the WTC site with Kendall. “We didn’t know if St. Paul’s Chapel had survived,” he said. “We wanted the NYPD, the FDNY to know that they were in our prayers, that we supported them. t looked like it was all over for Alex Cross, The Oneonta Outlaw. His opponent, Eric Corvis had him on all fours, sitting on him like a bench, reading aloud from the book he brought into the ring. “It’s storytime!” he announced to the booing crowd. “But I’m afraid there’s no happy ending for you.”

ning track. But after graduation, they saw a chance to make their childhood games a reality. “We went to a school in Rhode Island and trained with Chris Frank and Ricky Page,” he said. The two then joined with East Coast Professional Wrestling on the local legs of their tour. “We loved Pennsylvania,” said Edson. “They are so wrestling oriented. They live and breathe it.” But their big break came when Edson was bouncing at Legends Bar and Grill the weekend of the Rumble on the Mound. “Kimchee show up, and they 2012 didn’t needed someone to wrestle The Patriot,” he said. “My boss told them that I wrestled, and I brought Steve along. It was our first chance to wrestle in front our family and our hometown.” “I’d never done a show in front of that many people,” said Meade. “I was really excited to be able to give them that show.” Indeed, they wrestled in front of 1,200 screaming fans – even if they were booing him. “I like playing the bad guy,” said Edson. “The Patriot wooped me, and all these kids had their flags, booing me.” On the road, he plays “the cocky kid from New York,” but at home, he’s a softy. “As the Oneonta Outlaw, I have to defend our great city,” he said. “I’m protecting these kids.” “This kid’s reaction is outstanding,” agreed Meade. “We are comic book characters come to life.” But, like all superheroes, the next day, they went back to their regular lives. The show continued on in East Stroudsburg, Pa., but Edson hopes that the crowd’s good reaction will keep bringing wrestling back to Oneonta. “The question I get most is, ‘Is it fake’?” said Edson. “If you’re good, people will forget that it’s not real.”

I looked down, and there was an air canister with the plane’s flight number on it.” Miraculously, St. Paul’s was still standing, with only one window broken. And that’s when they got to work. “We made St. Paul’s a respite place,” he said. “We served hot meals, gave massages, gave the firemen and police a place to rest.” Karen – the Sisks retired a year ago to their long-time get-away home in Jefferson – also joined in helping at the church. “When I got there, I saw a fireman, in full gear, asleep on the pew,” she said. “They were setting up beds in the upper balcony.” Overwhelmed by both the generosity and the chaos, she and another volunteer set about cleaning up the coffee station. “There was creamer spilled and teabags everywhere,” she said. “That we could deal with.” Later that day, she helped on the food line, serving hamburgers and hot dogs. “Another volunteer came up to us and said, ‘The workers

in the pit are hungry – we need 50 hot dogs with a little bit of ketchup and mustard, wrapped up in foil so we can throw them down.”
Olive Garden donated salads, and local markets sent fruit. “I looked at the fruit and it didn’t look right,” she said. “It was covered in this fine, powdery stuff – ash. There was still debris in the air, even a week later.” Sisk also began to hear stories of heroism from his parishioners. “One man was coming down the stairs after the plane hit and he saw a woman sitting down, too tired to go on. He told her, ‘I’m not leaving you here, we’ll go down together,’ and helped her get all the way down. He wouldn’t leave her until they got away from the building, and they had just gotten clear before it fell.” He also listened to stories of grief and guilt. “One man finished having breakfast with
his friends and went to catch the elevator. His friend called him back, but he told him he’d catch up with him later. But that was the last elevator that made it down. His friends didn’t get out.” And when his work was done, the firemen gave him a memento in thanks for all his work – a cross made from melted steel and glass from the towers. “Your own compassion for people is an echo of God’s compassion,” he said.

IN MEMORIAM Chalmers Means, 84; Professor Helped Start Sheep-Dog Trials ONEONTA – Chalmer Edward Means, a retired SUNY Oneonta professor and founder of the annual Leatherstocking Sheep Dog Trials in Cooperstown, passed away Sept. 11, 2014, at the state Veterans Home in Oxford. He was 84. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, four children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was born May 13, 1930, on a dairy farm in Shippensburg, Pa. His love of farming, teaching and storytelling extended throughout his life. While still at SUNY, he expanded his expertise to include shepherding and trialing with border collies. The trials he helped found are still held each August
on Beaver Meadow Road, Town of Middlefield. At SUNY Oneonta, he was a beloved Means teacher in the Reading Education Department and inspired many in the teaching profession. He founded the annual Catskill Whole Language Conference, which drew speakers and attendees to Oneonta from around the world. After his retirement, he wrote his memoirs for his family and friends, entitled “As I Recall.”
Constance Allen, Pianist, Professor’s Wife ONEONTA – Constance Marie Allen, widow of a Hartwick College history professor and a decadeslong resident of Oneonta, passed away on Aug. 30, 2014. She was the daughter of Thomas and Rachel Hartley of Hamden, Conn. Connie was married to Daniel Allen, a Hartwick College history professor, for 68 years until his death in 2010. Connie was predeceased by her daughter, Deborah Allen; her son, Matthew Allen, and her brother, Charles Hartley.
She is survived by her granddaughter, Jennifer Russell; two great grandsons, Jacob and Andrew; as well as her daughter-in-law, Ellen Allen; her nephew, David Hartley and niece, Susan Hartley. Connie studied at the Yale School of Music and later in life completed her degree at Hartwick, where she was active in community life. She was an accomplished pianist and gave piano lessons in her home for many years. She and her husband traveled extensively through the United States, Europe and Russia.

Vera Schmitt, 81; Operated Lake Emmons Farm With Husband ONEONTA – Vera M. Schmitt, 81, who operated Lake Emmons Farm with her husband, passed away on Monday, Sept. 15, 2014 at the Fox Hospital Nursing Home. She was born in Downsville on June 30, 1933, the daughter of William and Elsie (Gray) Carey. She married Edgar Schmitt on Jan. 26, 1958. In addition to farming, Vera was a sales clerk at Woolworth’s, Agway, Ben
Franklin and other stores. She was a member of the Elm Park Methodist Church, the Tri County Dance Club, Vera Meridale SeSchmitt nior’s Club and the Pindars Corners Fire Department. Her interests included traveling, dancing and spending time with her
grandchildren. Also, scrapbooking and crafts, and had an extensive collection of frogs and owls. Survivors include her husband of 56 years; her children, Linda and David Nowak of Maryville, Tenn., Marjorie and Steven Banks of Franklin, and Karl Schmitt of Oneonta. Also, grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters,
Burton Carey, Glenn Carey, Marion Byington, and Ruth Gaston. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Elm Park Methodist Church with the Rev. Olu Harding, pastor, officiating. Committal will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery. Calling hours are 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, which is entrusted with the arrangements.

Rose C. Gibson, 86; Active In Presbyterian Church, Owen D. Young School SPRINGFIELD – Rose Catherine Gibson, who farmed with her husband and was long-active in the Presbyterian church and the Owen D. Young School District, passed away early Wednesday morning, Sept. 10, 2014, at Otsego Manor. She was 86. One of eight children, Rose was born Aug. 23, 1928, in her aunt’s home in New Marshfield, Ohio. Her parents were Mercer Logan Williams, school superintendent in Point Pleasant, W.Va., and Adelaide (Powell) Williams. She was raised on Long Island and received an associate’s degree from Stephens College in Missouri. At Boston University that fall, she met Charles (Bud) Frederick Gibson, also of Long Island, and the two
married on Oct. 23, 1948. In 1951, they bought a three-acre property in Huntington Station, L.I., and he began to study dairy sciences. The couple’s four sons, Daniel, William, James and Douglas, were born there. In 1958, the Gibsons sold their Long Island property and moved to Springfield, buying their “Rosebud” farm on Wiltse Hill between Van Hornesville and Springfield in 1960. Rose was active in First Presbyterian Church of East Springfield for 50 years, teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir. In the late 1960s, she was a delegate to General Assembly in Chicago. In Van Hornesville, she was a Cub Scout den mother, a member and one-time president of the PTO, and
Chalmers Means, 84; Professor Helped Start Sheep-Dog Trials ONEONTA – Chalmers Edward Means, a retired SUNY Oneonta professor and founder of the annual Leatherstocking Sheep Dog Trials in Cooperstown, passed away Sept. 11, 2014, at the state Veterans Home in Oxford. He was 84. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, four children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was born May 13, 1930, on a dairy farm in Shippensburg, Pa. His love of farming, teaching and storytelling extended throughout his life.
While still at SUNY, he expanded his expertise to include shepherding and trialing with border collies. The Means trials he helped found are still held each August on Beaver Meadow Road, Town of Middlefield. At SUNY Oneonta, he was a beloved teacher in the Reading Education Department and inspired many in the teaching profession.

She was a charter member of the Herkimer County Mental Health Association Auxiliary and served with the organization for 30 years, and a member of the National Alliance for Mental Illness. On selling the dairy in 1982, Rose joined ODY, working in the Resource Room helping students with reading and other course needs until 1992. Following her husband’s death in 1992, Rose wintered in Glenwood, Fla., serving at the Presbyterianaffiliated Duvall Home for Mentally Challenged until 2006. She also delivered
Meals on Wheels for the Town of Springfield for several years, until her stroke in 2007. Two-hundred acres of the family farm are preserved through a land easement with the Otsego Land Trust. In 2007, Rose moved to Hampshire House in Oneonta, joining the First United Presbyterian “Red Door” Church until June 2014, when she moved to Otsego Manor. Her body was donated to medical research. Rose is survived by her sons and their families: Daniel and Judith Gibson of Ballston Lake and their
children, Katie and Charlie; William and Jan Gibson of Cooperstown and their son, Will, and his wife, Emily, and their children Eva and Patrick; James Gibson and his children, Jennifer, Jacob and Rose and her children, Aaliyah and Cory, and Douglas’ wife, Jacqueline, and their sons, John and Chris, and many beloved nephews and nieces. Also, her sister, Barbara LaSalle, of Oneonta; a brother, David Williams, of Bellmore, L.I.; and her She was predeceased by her parents, three sisters, two brothers and a son, Douglas Gibson.
A memorial service will be at 11a .m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the First Presbyterian Church of East Springfield.
