eigh Chadwick, home for Christmas in the middle of her junior year at Harpur College, expected no more than a social evening when she and a group of skiing buddies went out to Harry’s, a Richfield Springs bar and dance hall just north of the village. Then who breezed through but Frank Eckmair, nine years older than Leigh, with college, a stint in Korea and a first marriage behind him, en route from Little Falls, where he was teaching art, to Gilbertsville, where he was living. He was a whirlwind of energy, Leigh remembers of the man who would be her husband for 51 years. Before breezing out the door, he asked the young woman, “Can I call you?� He did, the next day. Soon, “he started talking about ‘us’, about what ‘we’ were going to do.� This happened so quickly, “he never asked me to get married.� Two weeks before he was to depart that fall for graduate school at Ohio State, “he told me we HAD to get married,� Leigh said. “He caught Please See ECKMAIR, B3

a local artist with a national reputation. The work is wide-ranging, eclectic. He had voluminous creativity.” That was evident from that evening at Harry’s until the artist’s passing in February 2012. “He was doing more in his 70s then more people do in their 50s,” said attorney Haus, whose friendship with Eckmair goes back to the 1950s. That was manifest to the new wife in Columbus, Ohio. He’d “power nap” – awakening after 20 minutes at noon, reinvigorated for the afternoon. Another 20 minutes after supper, and he’d work in his studio until midnight.

A reception is planned 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11. And a panel discussion, at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, will mark the exhibit’s end. “It’s iconic for our area,” said Tim Sheesley, SUNY art professor and gallery director. “It certainly has an important local interest, but he had a tremendous career as a printmaker.” The other organizer, art enthusiast David Hayes, agreed: “He is

ECKMAIR/From B-1 me at a weak moment.” It was a productive union, not only in three children, including attorney Kelly Eckmair of Oneonta; Stephanie is a tri-athlete in Hingham, Mass., son Tony, a sculptor in Rochester. And in the hundreds, even thousands of wood cuts that came to life under his carving tools in the subsequent half-century of creativity. Eckmair’s woodcut and intaglio prints found homes in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, the Whitney, the British Museum, and in the homes of many local friends and admirers. While studying at Ohio State, he taught at Denison and Kenyon. Required to turn out four prints a semester, Frank – in competition with another artist – did one a week. And he had time to joust with his Abstract Expressionist instructor, telling the younger man, “I know how to paint. I’m going to paint what I’m going to paint.” After a year Millikin University in southern Illinois, “we accepted a one-year appointment at Buffalo State,” said Leigh. “It turned into 33 years.” Born in Norwich, Eckmair was raised in Gilbertsville, where his emigre parents – also Frank, a restaurateur trained in the European style in Austria, and mom Gladys – ran The Empire House, for decades a weekend dining mecca for patrons from Albany, Binghamton and Syracuse, as well as Cooperstown and Oneonta. Young Frank was considered a bit of a “child savant,” said his wife, and he was sent to Cooperstown to study under Helga Edge, a noted art teacher in her day. At the time, he became the youngest artist to display work at the Cooperstown Art Association. After Iowa State and Korea, he rotated back to Gilbertsville, While at Buffalo State, he commuted for 14 years so the kids could go to Gilbertsville schools. And he retired there in 1995. Even today, his studio and adjoining rooms at the Eckmairs’ home are stacked with type cases, stuffed with print upon print, tray after tray filled with the wood and metal blocks carved with the reverse images that, pressed against homemade paper, created his art. He began as a painter, and the examples still hanging in the Eckmairs’ home brings Marsden Hartley and Edward Hopper to mind, although Leigh bristles at such comparisons: They’re Frank Eckmair’s. But he was soon drawn to printmaking. And from colors to black on white, experimenting with white space in particular. Haus’ favorite is “The Auction,” inspired by one Jim Lettis conducted in New Lisbon in the 1960s; but there are so many others. From the type cases, relics from print shops that shifted to cold type, Frank culled ampersands – there are boxes of the “and” symbols stacked in bookcases. One result was “My Nice Little Ampersand,” a book written with Edward Smith Jr., a colleague in Buffalo State’s history department. What now? Leigh Eckmair, familiar with archives from her work as town historian, has some ideas, but nothing’s firmed up yet. Her husband’s energy continued until the end. He would sit for hours at the end of the couch, carving wood blocks on a tiger maple table Leigh’s dad built for her during her girlhood in Richfield Springs. When it was over, it was over. The couple were going out to a pancake breakfast. Frank, who had low blood sugar and had been passing out for a few moments from time to time, did so again while sitting on the bed, and didn’t wake up. But his imprint lives on.

Positive Dealings Among Females Her Inspiration BALLERINA/From B1 tights, my leotard, by ballet shoes and my TUTU!� Mia declares. “I’m a ballerina!� “A ballerina needs balance,� her older sister tells her. “You tripped going up the stairs yesterday.� But this is no book about a mean older sister. Instead of criticizing, the elder guides her younger sister who, at book’s end, becomes a ballerina indeed. “What I really wanted was a positive sister relationship,� Anna said in an interview on the porch of her parents’ Lake Street home, where she was visiting from New York City on Labor Day Weekend. “I think setting examples of positive female relationships is important.� As Mia became a ballerina, so Anna achieved her dream: Random House published “I Want To Be A Ballerina� on Tuesday, Aug. 26. Anna was raised in Washington, D.C. – and summered at Aunt Marcia’s farm in Milford. Her dad Joe Membrino, an Indian law attorney, lobbied for Native American water rights. Her mom, Martha, was director of publications at Sidwell Friends School, where Anna studied. (The parents retired a year ago and moved to Cooperstown.) Anna attended Connecticut College in New London (Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson’s alma mater, and that of Craig Timberg, Pulitzer winning journalist and son-in-law of Cooperstown’s Badgleys), where she worked in the Roth Writing Center and won an internship at Scholastic, the children’s book publisher. That turned into a job when she graduated. Over next year and a half, Anna sat through many publishers’ presentations of books they wanted picked up by Scholastic’s book clubs. “I was able to get a real sense of what publishers wanted,� which guided her when her break came after a couple of weeks at Random House. Although she doesn’t have an older sister herself (and, no, she’s never been a ballerina), she does have a younger brother, Michael. “I think the caring and depth of affection I have with my brother� is reflected in the book, she said. For instance, one of the challenges Mia overcomes is spilling orange juice, something her brother – he graduated from UVM in the spring – did regularly for a while. Since Smiljana Coh lives in Croatia, she and Anna didn’t have a chance to meet, but they developed a productive partnership nonetheless. At Anna’s end, the book was sketched out and text placed on each page. Beginning with one simple image of Mia, Smiljana spun out 32 pages of detailed illustration. Having achieved a life’s dream so quickly, what now? Anna’s doing some freelance writing for Random House, but “I really do love editing. I’ve got some fun projects coming up.� Stay tuned.
The team from Oneonta’s Eastman Associates, the construction firm, was everywhere, making final touches on the bank’s new railroad-depot-style branch on lower Main Street, across from River Street. Appliances came from the Catans’ Sears Hometown Store at the far end of River. Kevin Green’s Epic Landscapes of Toddsville did the plantings. Not everything is done locally, but as much as possible is, said bank President Scott White, which, he added, is the point of a local bank. Seven years ago, the Bank of Cooperstown didn’t exist. Now, after chalking up the second-largest deposits in the Cooperstown market, it is refocusing sights on Oneonta, opening its first branch Monday, Sept. 8, with a day-long celebration, including a ribbon-cutting

Positive Dealings Among Females Her Inspiration BALLERINA/From B1 tights, my leotard, by ballet shoes and my TUTU!� Mia declares. “I’m a ballerina!� “A ballerina needs balance,� her older sister tells her. “You tripped going up the stairs yesterday.� But this is no book about a mean older sister. Instead of criticizing, the elder guides her younger sister who, at book’s end, becomes a ballerina indeed. “What I really wanted was a positive sister relationship,� Anna said in an interview on the porch of her parents’ Lake Street home, where she was visiting from New York City on Labor Day Weekend. “I think setting examples of positive female relationships is important.� As Mia became a ballerina, so Anna achieved her dream: Random House published “I Want To Be A Ballerina� on Tuesday, Aug. 26. Anna was raised in Washington, D.C. – and summered at Aunt Marcia’s farm in Milford. Her dad Joe Membrino, an Indian law attorney, lobbied for Native American water rights. Her mom, Martha, was director of publications at Sidwell Friends School, where Anna studied. (The parents retired a year ago and moved to Cooperstown.) Anna attended Connecticut College in New London (Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson’s alma mater, and that of Craig Timberg, Pulitzer winning journalist and son-in-law of Cooperstown’s Badgleys), where she worked in the Roth Writing Center and won an internship at Scholastic, the children’s book publisher. That turned into a job when she graduated. Over next year and a half, Anna sat through many publishers’ presentations of books they wanted picked up by Scholastic’s book clubs. “I was able to get a real sense of what publishers wanted,� which guided her when her break came after a couple of weeks at Random House. Although she doesn’t have an older sister herself (and, no, she’s never been a ballerina), she does have a younger brother, Michael. “I think the caring and depth of affection I have with my brother� is reflected in the book, she said. For instance, one of the challenges Mia overcomes is spilling orange juice, something her brother – he graduated from UVM in the spring – did regularly for a while. Since Smiljana Coh lives in Croatia, she and Anna didn’t have a chance to meet, but they developed a productive partnership nonetheless. At Anna’s end, the book was sketched out and text placed on each page. Beginning with one simple image of Mia, Smiljana spun out 32 pages of detailed illustration. Having achieved a life’s dream so quickly, what now? Anna’s doing some freelance writing for Random House, but “I really do love editing. I’ve got some fun projects coming up.� Stay tuned.
The team from Oneonta’s Eastman Associates, the construction firm, was everywhere, making final touches on the bank’s new railroad-depot-style branch on lower Main Street, across from River Street. Appliances came from the Catans’ Sears Hometown Store at the far end of River. Kevin Green’s Epic Landscapes of Toddsville did the plantings. Not everything is done locally, but as much as possible is, said bank President Scott White, which, he added, is the point of a local bank. Seven years ago, the Bank of Cooperstown didn’t exist. Now, after chalking up the second-largest deposits in the Cooperstown market, it is refocusing sights on Oneonta, opening its first branch Monday, Sept. 8, with a day-long celebration, including a ribbon-cutting

A Republican, she will also be seeking the Democratic nomination in that party’s primary, noon-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, against Democrat David Rowley, the former Oneonta City School District interim superintendent. She has been endorsed by the town Democratic Committee, even as a Republican. Since her appointment in January, she has supported the ban on gas drilling, as well as drafting the road-use agreement, which protects the town’s taxpayers from hav-
ing to pay for damage caused by industrial trucking. “It does not effect logging, cement or gravel businesses,” she said. “Those are local companies that we want to see continue operations. This is a piece of legislation that promotes good business.” The environmental factor is a critical part of Riddell-Kent’s campaign. In 2005, she and her husband donated the family’s farm to the state as the Robert V. Riddell State Park. “Environmental stewardship is very important to me,” she said. “We love business, but we have to look at what is sustainable. My dad taught me that.” She recently finished applying for a $460,500 Green Innovations Grant for the board in hopes of improving draining in the West End. “On May 16, when we had all that rain, I grabbed Steve and said, ‘We’re going to take pictures’!”
she said. “We went to the Westgate Plaza and took photos of how flooded it was, and I included those photos with my application.” The grant would allow them to plant more trees along Butler Creek and improve drainage in the town. “And I’ll keep writing grants until we get the funding we need.” With the fracking ban now in place, Riddell-Kent feels as though the board is able to move forward. “We’ve seen how politics had locked up the board, but this new board has so much momentum,” she said. “We’re really working together. My motto is that it’s not about politics – it’s about getting work done.” And she hopes that she can continue being a part of it. “I want to stay on this board,” she said. “If the people of Oneonta will have me.”
ROWLEY/From A1 Dave Rowley’s mother and aunt moved into two of the existing homes there. A sister brother – Rowley is one of nine siblings – built houses there. After Hartwick College, Rowley received a master’s in public administration from Penn State, then embarked on a challenging career in public education. He taught at Edmeston, then Monticello, where he rose to assistant principal. He joined Jefferson/Youngsville as high school principal, and participated in its merger with Delaware Valley and Narrowsburg, into the Sullivan West Central School District. He served as assistant superintendent of the new 1,700-student district, “a really challenging job.” That primed him for a superintendency, which brought him back to Edmeston Central, which brought him full circle back to
Rowley Lane, where he’s lived for six years. And now, after a stint as interim superintendent of Oneonta schools after Mike Shea retired, and a current one at Stamford, he’s looking to bring all that experience to the Oneonta Town Board. Noon-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, his name will be on the Democratic primary ballot vs. Trish RiddellKent, appointed to the town board in January. Kent, a Republican, gained sufficient signatures to get on the Democratic ballot. In recent years, when Supervisor Bob Wood formed five task forces to study possible consolidation with the city in 2012-12, Rowley chaired General Administration. While the five task forces concluded merger wasn’t feasible then, Rowley’s group identified $460,000 in possible savings. As the town prepared the Comprehensive Master Plan, he provided advice on issues related to the
school district. With the debate raging about whether the town should build a water plant in Fortin Park to serve Southside, Rowley joined former DEC Commissioner Mike Zagata and Roger France, a retired state Department of Health Engineer, in studying the matter and concluded the Fortin option is the cheapest right now, but a regional water authority provided the most benefits. Rowley’s wife, Gail, works at LEAF. Their daughter, Heather, lives in New York City. “I’m very supportive of the new direction of the IDA,” he said. “You have to be supportive of reasonable economic development when you look at decline of enrollments. It’s all a byproduct of young families relocating to other places. If we don’t have opportunities for our people, we aren’t going to reverse this trend.”

At Hampshire House, Joe Libutti’s Life Of Laughter Celebrate On His 100th Birthday 100/From A1 of nine kids – two sisters, six brothers. “I don’t think there was ever a time when he didn’t have a job,” said Nancy. “When he was a kid, he would light the temple stoves on the Sabbath for the Jewish community.” He met his wife, Julia, through his uncle, and as the two of them were addressing their wedding envelopes at the kitchen table, news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor came across the radio. During World War II, he was a radio operator, and afterwards, he worked as an air-traffic controller at JFK and at McArthur Airport on Long Island, raising three daughters – Nancy plus
Joanne and Sue – in West Hempstead. He was also known for his cooking. An article in The Long Island Press’ magazine showed him and Julie preparing “Chicken Libutti” – chicken Alfredo with egg noodles. Hampshire House prepared it for his birthday party. “He was always cooking,” said Abby. “All my memories are of walking into his house and smelling tomato sauce.” His real career was making people smile. “He was a clown with the Shriner’s circus,” said Nancy. “He used to go to nursing homes, children’s hospitals and ride in the parade.” “He had an empty leash that he’d walk around like
there was a dog on it,” said Abby. “And he had one of those big flowers that shot water out of it. Those were his favorite tricks.” He didn’t just save the clowning around for the circus. “My niece Gina worked in the supermar-
ket, and he would come in wearing his clown outfit,” said Nancy. “She was so embarrassed!” Spreading joy didn’t stop when he took off his greasepaint. “He used to hand out little cards with his motto printed on them,”
said Nancy. “’May there be peace in your heart, love in your eyes, laughter on your tongue.’ We’d be in the grocery store, and he’d hand them out. He must have given away thousands of them.” To this day, she keeps one
in her purse. “He’s always been a super-generous person,” said Nancy. And it’s part of his advice for a long life. “Have a good, kind family,” he said. Grinning, he added. “My birthday is every day.”

produce its own deeds to back up its claim. “They’re saying, ‘It’s our land, and we’ll do what we see fit’,” said Jim. “But we’re not ready to concede.” On the DOT’s demolition list is the Severs’ historic boathouse. “Not too many of the original structures are left,” said Jim. “This boathouse is one of the last.” “You can see why we’re upset,” said Betty. “It’s a charming old boathouse.” But more than just saving the boathouse and the camps, the Friends hope to stop the “unsightly” repairs along Route 80 – West Lake Road – where rip-rap is being dumped 40 feet beyond the shoreline to stabilize the slope. “Hazard cones have become a permanent fixture
along the road as it continues to crack and crumble into the lake,” the petition reads. “We would like to see NYSDOT complete and landscape the failing repairs.” The Otsego Town Board has voted to support the Friends, which has also been in talks with Otsego 2000, the SUNY Biological Field Station and the Otsego County Conservation Association, citing concerns that the proposed demolitions will cause salt and other chemicals to runoff into the lake. “It’s not just a segment of the road,” said Betty. “It’s the water, it’s the tourist industry. And once the shoreline is gone, it’s gone forever.”

IN MEMORIAM Nancy Cleveland, 73, Of Lyons Auction Family, Loved Tap Dancing, Skating While Growing Up ONEONTA – Nancy A. Cleveland, 73, who was born in the Lyon’s Auction Room family and worked there for a period, passed away on Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, at home after a courageous battle with cancer. The family gives special thanks to her caregiver for the past two years, Sue Hoyt, who cared for Nancy with love and dignity. Nancy was born Jan. 12, 1941 at Parshall Hospital, Oneonta, the daughter of Homer E. Lyon and Agnes O. (Butts) Lyon. She was a graduate of Oneonta High School, Class of 1959. On Aug. 20, 1961, Nancy married Wesley E. Cleveland in Mount Vision. He passed away on March 25, 2003. In addition to working at a bookkeeper in the family business, she worked at J.J. Newberry’s, F.W. Woolworth, Family Bargain Center, White Modell, Barker’s and King’s Department Store. She went to work at the Oneonta Job Corps Academy, spending 24 years working in the finance department, retiring in July 2007. Growing up, Nancy loved roller skating, tap dancing and spending time with her father on the auction truck. Throughout her life she loved playing cards and after retirement spent her Friday nights playing cards with the gang.
She had a green thumb and will always be remembered for her abundance of plants and flowers, including her beloved peonies that lined her driveway. She spent hours working on her puzzles and always enjoyed company stopping by to add their one piece. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her son Terry Cleveland and his wife Michele of Mount Vision, her daughter Peggy Rowe of Syracuse, stepdaughter Renee Andrews and her husband Peter of Oneonta, sister and brotherin-law Dorothy (Lyon) and Richard Wooden of Oneonta, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Wilber (Daria) Cleveland, brother-in-law William Schneible, and her grandchildren John Andrews of Utah, Danielle Andrews of Davenport, Katrina Vega of Oneonta, James Cleveland of Newport News, Va., Benjamin Cleveland of Mount Vision and Matthew Rowe of Syracuse; six great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother Homer E. Lyon, Jr., her parents Homer E. Lyon and Agnes O. (Butts) Lyon, her sisters and brother-in-laws Rae Mary (Donald) Phoenix and Dorcas Jane (Allen) Thorn, and a great grandson. Calling hours are 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, in the

Eleanor Maliszewski, 95; Retired To Hartwick From Long Island HARTWICK – Eleanor P. Maliszewski, a former resident of Long Island who made her home in Hartwick, passed away Sunday morning, Aug. 31, at Otsego Manor. She was 95. A native of Long Island, Eleanor was born on May 23, 1919, on the family farm in Hicksville. She was a daughter of Edward and Johanna (Loeffler) McGunnigle. Eleanor was a graduate of Hicksville High School. For years she was employed as a secretary and bookkeeper for several businesses on Long Island, including Doug East Shop and Car Sales in Huntington. On Nov. 8, 1952, she married Joseph George Maliszewski, also a Long Island native, at St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church in Hicksville. They settled in Northport where they raised their family. In 1995, Eleanor and Joe moved to Hartwick, where they built a home and enjoyed life in the country. Eleanor enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as knitting, reading and gardening, especially with Joe. She was a communicant at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Survivors include five daughters and four sonsin-law, Joanne P. Allison of Hartwick, Mary Ellen and
Chris Hughes, of Northport, Victoria and Tim West of Hartwick, Patricia and Jeff Altadonna of Centerport, and Christine and Bill Feehan of Aurora, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Joseph Allison and wife, Christie, of Hartwick, Catherine Nagelschmidt and husband, Reid, of Cooperstown, Erin Griffith and husband, Bob, of Hartwick, Christopher J. Eleanor is also survived by two sisters, Irene Miller of Milford Center and Agnes Ahrens of Flemington, NJ; and one brother, Edward McGunnigle and wife Dorothy of Hicksville, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Joe, who died Jan. 29, 2006; a son-in-law, Robert Gordon Allison, Jr., who died May 19, 2008; two sisters, Cecelia and Frances McGunnigle; and one brother, Gerald McGunnigle. A funeral mass is at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, at St. Mary’s, with Father.
