At dusk on the Fourth of July, Hager is planning a 15-minute fireworks display – relatively short, “but intense,” he said – off Three Mile Point, and hopes boats from around Otsego Lake will meet in the waters there to honor one of the most venerable of its number. Maybe Kent Barwick will be there on The Gardenia, built by Cooperstown’s A.H. Gazely, boatmaker from 1886 until about 1920. Maybe Bill Michaels will be there aboard the Wah-tawah, an 80-year-old Richardson. It will be the place for boats to be and be seen. As Lou Hager relates it, August Busch I, his great-grandfather -- of the Anheuser Busch family of St. Louis, Mo. -- became acquainted with Otsego Lake early in the 20th century, on passing by private car through what was then the largest hops-growing region in the country. August was taken by Otsego Lake’s beauty -- that, and the hops, reminded him of the family’s home region in Germany -- and he bought Uncas Lodge (where Lou’s sister now lives), across from Three Mile Point, from a hops merchant, Simon Ullman, in 1904. When he passed away in 1934, The Chief Uncas passed from August to his daughter, Alice Busch Gronewaldt, but it was actively used by her son, Lou Hager Sr., who died in 1988. When Mrs. Groenewaldt died in 1995, the boat became Lou Jr.’s. For a period around 1980, the boat was owned by Richard Miller, a retired transit police officer from New York City, who oper-
ated Chief Uncas Boat Tours for a number of years, seven trips a day, 30 people per trip, seven days a week. That’s a lot of wear and tear, said Tom Krieg, the master boat builder who tends most of the local antique launches, including this one. When The Chief Uncas passed back into family hands, Krieg estimates he replaced 20 percent of the frame, bottom planks and side planks. Family members then operated Lake Otsego Boat Tours from 1986 to 2000, when Lou Hager Jr. began spending more time in the county – he had bought Northern Eagle Beverage, Oneonta, from Diz Lamonica – and on the lake, and took a renewed interest in the wooden antiquity. If the Chief Uncas went through a full circle of ownership, it also went through a technological full circle. At one point, the electric engines that Adolphus had insisted upon the second time around had been replaced by gasoline ones. Concerned about how gasoline engines might contribute to the pollution of Otsego Lake, Hager and Krieg collaborated in 2011 to reconvert The Chief Uncas to electricity. Fifty-five feet is long, longer than modern boats. At first, Spin Craft of Ottawa, Ont., provided two of its normal electrical generators to power The Chief Uncas, but they proved insufficient, Krieg said, opening a hatch to reveal a bank of large batteries below. The second time around, sufficient power was brought to bear. “It was awesome to see a 55-foot boat back away silently from the dock,” said Krieg. For Hager, gliding toward the Sleeping Lion, silently, hearing the waves lap against the wooden hull, is a delight.

CROFT/From B1 baritone, has sung with opera greats such as Pavarotti, Mirella Freni and Nicolai Ghiorov and performed in “Billy Budd,” “Pélleas et Mélisande,” “The Great Gatsby” and “The Marriage of Figaro.” “Opera is fun. You can have a good time doing certain roles,” he said. “But it’s too serious too much of the time. I can’t even remember the last time I did an opera where I was sad when it ended. But a week and a half into rehearsal and I’m already sad about it ending.”
Croft built a home in Cooperstown in 2006, but hadn’t joined up with Glimmerglass Opera until now. Marcia Milgrom Dodge, the director, asked him to come up with a list of musicals he wanted to do, and “The Music Man” was at the top of his list. “I got to her apartment and I didn’t even have to say anything to her,” he said. She told him: “I really want to do ‘The Music Man’ with you as Harold Hill.” Not only is playing Harold Hill at Glimmerglass a welcome homecoming, but there was another local
surprise in store as well. “I did theater with Nancy Tarr and Patrick Wagner, who didn’t know each other at the time,” he said. “They met after graduation and got married ... and their son Henry is playing Winthrop. He’s so good that he can bring a lump to my throat. To do that, at 9 years old, is really quite amazing.” “It’s the best staged musical I’ve been in,” he said. “The dialogue is still funny and the end scene can still give you goosebumps. It still breaks your heart – it’s not dated at all.”

WHAT’S COOKIN’ AT THE OTESAGA? The July 4th holiday is almost upon us so here’s a delicious summer steak recipe that Dad can prepare on the grill for the whole family.
Grilled Herb Mustard Steaks SERVES 4: 2 well-trimmed boneless beef top loin or ribeye steaks, cut 1 inch thick (approx 1 lb) 1 teaspoon kosher salt per steak
In 1-cup glass measure, combine garlic and water; microwave on high 30 seconds. Stir in remaining mustard ingredients; spread onto both sides of beef steaks. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt per side. Place steaks on grill over medium heat or ash-covered coals. Grill top loin steaks, uncovered, 15 to 18 minutes (ribeye steaks 11 to 14 minutes) for medium rare to medium doneness, turning occasionally. Carve steaks crosswise into thick slices.

Christine Schermerhorn, 63, Eucharist Minister at St. Mary’s ONEONTA -- Christine McKone Schermerhorn, 63, an active volunteer with St Mary’s Church, died Saturday, June 23, 2012, from complications of cancer. Born on Oct. 12, 1948, in Niskayuna, she was the daughter of Thomas and Phyllis McKone. Ms. Schermerhorn and her husband, Tom, were married on Aug. 18, 1973, at St. Helen’s Church in Schenectady. They made their home in Oneonta where she was a eucharist minister at St. Mary’s Church and volunteered her services at Saturday’s Bread and St. Mary’s Food Pantry. She was formerly employed as a teacher in North Colonie and Sidney school
districts; by Dr. James Iandiorio as his receptionist; by ONC BOCES as a teaching assistant; and by the Christine Schermerhorn Oneonta City School District as a member of the clerical staff. She is survived by her husband, Tom of Oneonta; by her sister, Pat Hogan of Scotia; and by her brothers, Tom (Linda) of Schenectady, David (Betty) of Niskayuna, Michael of Bethesda, Md., Brian (Margie) of Ballston Lake, Kevin (Barbara) of Kirkwood, Mo.,
and John (Jackie) of Arnold, Md. Christine is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents. Family and friends are welcome at calling hours from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with a prayer service at 5 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2012, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 35 Walnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. David Mickiewicz as celebrant. Interment will take place 11 a.m. Friday, June 29,

Ceylon Hulbert, 69, Enjoyed WWE Wrestling, Yankees LAURENS -- Ceylon George Hulbert, 69, a chef at Molinari’s, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 24, 2012. He was born on December 18, 1942 in Oneonta, the son of Donald C. and Geraldine W. (Timewell) Hulbert. Hulbert was employed at Molinari’s Restaurant as a chef for many years. He enjoyed watching WWE Wrestling and was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan. He also loved to hunt with his father and brothers. Most of all, he was very proud of his daughters and grandchildren. He loved getting together with his family at holidays and spending time at the Hulbert Pond. He is survived by his daughters, Kathy L. Dvoracek of Schnecksville,
Pennsylvania, Sandra L. VanDuesen and her children, Patrick, Kaleb, and Jacob, of West Oneonta, Pamela “Pam” S. (Brian) Bouchard of Latham, and Deborah “Debbie” R. (Jim) Ronca of Ballston Spa; many grandchildren and a great granddaughter. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Sandra Faulkner and Priscilla (Russell) Galbreth, Charles W. (Brenda) Hulbert and Donald “Gary” (Pat) Hulbert, all of Laurens; his brotherin-law, Ronald Wikoff of Oneonta and several nieces, nephews and many friends including Jon and Dawn. He will be truly missed by his family and friends. Ceylon was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Paula J. Wikoff, and his brother-in-law, James Faulkner.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012 at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012 at the Bookhout Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Messner, Pastor of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Laurens, officiating. Interment will follow in the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Ceylon’s memory to the Laurens American Legion Post 1688, Main Street, Laurens, NY 13796. Arrangements are entrusted to the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
